i finished my book - now what? // writing from an idea again . . .
I finally finished the last book in my trilogy. But what happens now? My whole life has been these books for seven years… how do I start to create something new? Honestly; I’m terrified.

two year writing slump // getting back up & new directions

I've been gone for a hot minute. Time to explain why . . . (sorry about the quiet sound on this one: she's a bit rusty!) Like Shadow climbing out of that mud pit in Homeward Bound, I'm pulling myself out of a writing slump that has lasted for two freaking years . . . I'll be taking the channel in some fun directions - let me know if you have any requests for what you want to see from me! I'm so...

Writing is a craft, like any other art form. And regularity and consistency and routine are a huge element in making sure that I write my best and stay on top of my game as an author. In that spirit, I wanted to outline my warmup routine for a day of writing. Outline & Organize Plot Points in Scrivener // how i go in depth with plotwork
Просмотров 5 тыс.2 года назад
Based on the questions and responses to some of my previous videos, I wanted to go over more in detail how I translate my plotwork into Scrivener itself and work within there. Mainly, I wanted to cover how I more specifically use Scrivener and templates to work on my plot. I create the general outline, fill in my plotwork to the corresponding plot points, and then work and arrange my plot weavi...
Enneagram for Character Conflict // how choices are made: using Lord of the Rings
Просмотров 8662 года назад
Using the Enneagram to round out a character is a wonderful way to add depth and meaning to their actions and choices. As a writer, I'm always thinking about ways to help my characters feel more authentic, and to have their journey feel true to actual human behavior. In this video I discuss my process for using Enneagram, the basic descriptions of the 9 types, and apply it to one of the best fi...
Getting Through Revisions // my edit process from start to finish

Come along with me as I detail my editing process from start to finish. How I go from Scrivener to Kindle to Microsoft Word through my entire step-by-step approach as I revise, refine, and polish my manuscript. When I'm done with this process, the book is fully ready for formatting and publication. I’m always curious about it how authors - especially indie authors - go about their editing proce...
Scrivener for iPad // writing without limits
Просмотров 32 тыс.2 года назад
I absolutely love Scrivener for a variety of reasons - It has fabulous tools for things like plotwork, character design, and overall structure for writing. For my organization-loving mind, it’s amazing! But the absolute best thing Scrivener offers is an app for on-the-go access. This means I can keep going on my writing no matter where I am. In this vid I go over how I use both my MacBook and m...
Let’s Explore Denver // travel with us to Colorado
Просмотров 1123 года назад
We recently took a trip to visit family in Denver, Colorado. Tag along with me as we explore the city, checking out the best spots to grab the best coffee, delicious cocktails, great breweries, and fantastic restaurants that this city has to offer. Denver is such a cool city and has a very low-key vibe… we’ll definitely be back! I could use a little more snow in my life right about now. And I’m...
Let's Visit Charleston // eat, drink, & explore the holy city
Просмотров 1413 года назад
I took a quick trip to Charleston, South Carolina - the Holy City - and spent a few days exploring. This was the first time I've travelled in a while - the pandemic has really thrown a wrench in my usual activities the past year - so it was wonderful to get out and enjoy a new place. Charleston surprised me with its beauty and the delicious food and drink options. Come along with me on this lit...
Book Cover Design // my indie process
Просмотров 4733 года назад
I get so many questions about how I designed my cover and how the process went, that I thought I'd sit down and go over exactly what process I use to move through this fun part of indie publishing. Designing my covers is probably my absolute favorite part of the process - it's really like wrapping this gorgeous present I've created in paper and ribbons that are as beautiful as what's inside. Today I want to sit down and talk a little bit about one of the biggest soul crushers that all authors have to face at some point in your life: #WritersBlock This is a topic that is often discussed and acknowledged in the writing community, but as much as we talk about it, nobody wants to admit when they have it. I go over my fave ways to work through this b*shy part of the #writinglife IN THIS...
How I Plot in Scrivener // from sticky notes to digital
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
I got a lot of questions on my plot work videos about how I practically go about the process of plot weaving. Since I'm starting on book 3 in my Echo series, I thought I'd take you along for the ride with me as I start out working on plot from the ground up. So sit down with me as I go from white board to cork board & sticky notes, to #Scrivener itself and take a look at how I work on plot from...

Complex Plotting for Story (using The Mummy) - The 7 Point Plot Structure // part two

This is part two of a two part series on the 7 Point Plot Structure (also known as the 7 Point Story Structure). We take the basic format and apply it to a full story across multiple plot threads - and in this video we'll be using The Mummy (yup, that glorious cinematic genius from 1999) as our primary example. If you haven't seen part one, make sure you go and watch that one first! You'll need...

2025 and still informative and so well put together! ty for sharing this
Yay! It means a lot that you found it helpful - thanks for letting me know 😊
Hi there, thanks for sharing such great information! I’m used to writing in Final Draft since I predominantly work on plays and scripts. However, I’m currently writing my childhood memoirs, and Microsoft Word is frustrating me to no end, so here I am! I’ve downloaded Scrivener on my iPad, but I can’t figure out how to access it from my laptop. Could anyone help me out? Thanks!

I'm at the other end of the journey. I'm writing Act II of a 4 act structure of my first book. I'm sure I have over 150,000 words, but most of it has either been tossed or put toward future books. I'm trying to find a balance between pantsing and plotting. My chapters are too long. I'm still trying to plot the entirety of the story. But it has great bones. I enjoy reading my own story. And I still enjoy writing it. Sometimes it seems like the characters tell me what their stories will be. A minor side character will become so much fun to write about, then suddenly they are a main character, helping to drive the story along. Sometimes the process feels like painting in layers. I put down an exciting idea. Then I edit it to make it read more smoothly. Then I connect other characters and storylines. Then I add extra details for the 5 senses. Layer by layer, the vision in my head forms on the page, plus some things I hadn't envisioned. One of my challenges has been combining characters. I have an idea for a new character, but realize that their story would dovetail perfectly with an existing character. Then I have one character with more depth and across more themes of the novel--and less confusing for the reader. I'm hitting the point where everything feels like a compromise toward a more cohesive story. But I still can't quite see the end in sight. Writing a book is far more complicated than I ever expected. Addressing your current problems, I think coming up with a spark of inspiration is one of the hardest parts. What inspires you to build a new world? What story hasn't been told before? What thoughts are people on our world not having--what conversations? How do you make people feel that something which seems impossible is actually possible? Those sparks are hard for me to find. It's like plucking a fruit you've never eaten from a tree you've never seen before. And finding the right balance with a day job only adds more layers of complications to our own lives.
So obsessed with this and so proud of you! Cant wait to hear more about your next project 💗

OKAY OPENING SHOTS
SHE'S BACK!
books look good, and don't seem to be as cursed as the things i listen to video essays about, so very cool!
Welcome back! You're home looks so cool and beautiful. I love the backdrop. I'd love videos of you exploring the city as you get back into writing and reading. Good luck on your writing this year with the last book and your new projects.
This is amazingly succinct! I followed someone else’s video months ago but got lost in their process. Yours is much easier for me to understand. Thank you for taking us step by step, and for the template. This is showing love to the writing community and I appreciate it!!
Thank you this is so helpful especially reading a bit before writing.
Thank you for these videos. I’ve been stuck in analysis paralysis for a year, starting over several times, not knowing how to nail a plot outline system that works for me. Your method makes sense and I’m excited to start using it!!
Brilliant!! Thank you sooooooo much. So very helpful. ❤
Do you HAVE to use Dropbox? I’m planning on just using IPad to create.
Only if you want to sync with another device. If the iPad is your only device, you don’t need Dropbox.
Thanks 👍
I loved this. It made so much sense to me and was so useful. Have you finished the book?
yup! finally finished last month (after a long hiatus) and i'm back at this exact stage now 😅
Hi Jessica- I am loving you're videos about how you think about and use Scrivener. I DO HAVE A QUESTION - I'd really love to know how you use keywords. I see how you use labels, and I get that they are for the big threads of the story. But what about keywords? Do you have a strategy for how you approach using them? I don't know if you're still doing these videos or if you'll see this, but that's my question. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH. This is exactly what I've been searching for. Great video. I love the separate plot folder and how you leave them intact and copy over parts into the plot weaving. I can't wait to try this.
That was very well presented and enlightening, but don't call me baby.😀
i keep coming back to this it's been real helpful thank you and God bless you :)
Спасибо за очень полезное видео!
right on thank you God bless you :)
thanks this was helpful God bless you :)
Change title of video. Misleading as the video was only about saving syncing and switching between platforms. Mentioned connecting scrivener to Dropbox but did not show how to connect the two apps. Disappointing.
Loved the examples here! Great video/editing on this
Dropbox is intrusive. Probably not better, but what about Google Docs?
In order to use Scrivener on both an IPad and a laptop do you have to purchase both versions separately thanks
Did anyone answer this question? I too have downloaded it on my iPad, but I’m trying to figure out how to access it from my laptop. I don’t want to purchase it again.
No answer, I think they're all too busy writing
I have an iPad and a PC and I’m using them both in interchangeably and a lot of the writing that I do which is basic writing. Do you know anything about scrivener articulating between the iPad and PC I have dropbox so if I use the iPad and save to Dropbox with my iPad, can I pull it up on my PC through dropbox
Glad I stumbled on this video today💕 I’ve always wondered how people used Scrivener to plot. I’ve only ever stuck with my main scene cards in my manuscript for plot notes and ideas for scenes. Thank you for showing me a completely different way to organize my ideas digitally!
Is the $25 iPad version worth the money? Thanks!
You just made my life so much easier! Thank you for using movie as references. I realized I'm a visual learner 😅
I need help! I don’t understand what I did wrong. I only have Scrivener for my iPhone. I do not own the computer version. I wanted to make sure that my project would be saved as a back up in case my phone or app ever crashed. So here’s what I did. I clicked on sync with dropbox and I logged into my Dropbox account. It gave me an error, and then it brought me back to Scrivener and all of my projects were gone? I wrote 3000+ words and they were just… Deleted. There’s no way for me to recover them. Since this happened, I’ve started copying and pasting my projects into my Google documents. But this is very time-consuming. I would like to know if I were to try again will it all work? I don’t know why it did that. And now I’m scared to try and make a back up.
Do you know how to get page view on Ipad?? I need some stuff to start on a new page, but it doesn’t show where a new page is🙈
I've felt in love with your content, Jessica. Your labour over here is really innovative, informative and different. Thanks for all of your effort!
The absolute best layout with multiple examples.
You explain things so beautifully! Love your plot structure format - just finished my messy first draft and plan to start plotting it out again to begin "weaving it all together". Wish you would make more videos! Thank you for this!
Thank you so, so much! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I'm working on a Substack essay about prepping my creative projects, and I am going to link this video!
delighted it was helpful! 💕
Your videos are so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make such information-packed videos!
Brilliant! This is the first tutorial of Scrivener that is as clear and orderly as I have ever seen. Thank you very much and I wish you lots of success in your career! Greetings from Switzerland.
This is super useful and explained very straight forward. Thank you for that!
Thanks so much! Your video is great 🎉🙌
Do you know how this could work if a story has two romance arcs, with two separate couples?
I know this is old and I’m just finding this video but you need to have two separate books because that’s a lot of gymnastics that you’re doing for your story. You wanna give each romance art his own thing so maybe they should be in their own books. I ran to the same problem, and I discovered that the two romances deserve their own books so the first book is gonna be about one sister’s romance and the other one about another sister’s romance then I’m gonna bring all the characters together in a third book which book in the trilogy.
Hi Jessica, thank u for your patience tutorial. Do you think is it possible saved and sync the same file on Dropbox but overwriting it and not with different files each time ?
Hi is it possibile overwriting the same file ? When I saved from my MacBook Pro I saw that there’s always a new one and the space on Dropbox is small . Could you help me ?
Thank you for this video! I’m curious what your recommendation would be: I can only afford Scrivener on one platform, either my desktop PC or my iPad. Which would you suggest I buy Scrivener on?
Well that really depends on how you enjoy working... I love having the multi-panel options in order to see the overview of all my notes and plot work while I'm drafting, so personally I'd choose the desktop/PC version. The iPad has less functionality that way, but obviously is lovely to have on the go. Hope that helps! 💕
This video deserves wayyy more views! So many things just clicked for me and it just broke down the way I wanted to plot and outline in a far more coherent way. THANK YOU. I love the way you call it "weaving" as that is exactly what I wanted to achieve. So appreciative to find this.
🥹 Thank you so much for officially the sweetest comment - I'm so glad you found it helpful with your craft... brb just gonna go cry happily in a corner... 💕
😄💕@@JessicaLynnMedina
I tried pantsing a story and it's not working well for me so I'm trying to figure out how to plot now.
Love your channel! It's really helped me organize my writing process so far. Thanks so much!
I'm so happy you've found my vids helpful! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment!
Very very helpful videos. Love your concise way of describing what you do and how you do it. Thank you for sharing!
this is so incredibly helpful thank you for sharing!!
