Kyocera Samurai: Is This Vintage Half Frame Camera Worth It?
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.Год назад
Many beloved legendary cameras were born in the 80s. The Canon AE-1, Nikon F3, Leica R5 (well maybe not so much), and Yashica T3 were all released or saw their popularity soar in the decade. None of them are quite as odd as the Kyocera Samurai, a half frame camera that takes more inspiration from a a handy cams design than a regular 35mm slr. It took a some canvassing of Tokyos used camera stor...

    I shoot full frame mirror-less digital. (Sigma fpL) My motivation for upgrading to full frame was so that that I could adapt vintage lenses and they would perform optically similar to how they did on film. (corner to corner rather then cropped down). I am very intrigued with the Dual Range feature, other than pixel peeping, are there any other issues with using this o a digital camera? Will the dual range feature work on an M mount adapter? Obviously I will not need the view finder adapter. Great video btw. Def subscribing.

      My understanding is that the tlrs from reputable brands (rollei, yashica, Minolta) all have similar-ish, very good image quality barring differences in aperture, and that the main differences are in how you use them.

    I was very interested in your video and also the reference to the book, I would perhaps do a run through or have your script so to speak on a laptop or iPad, I kicked the little references to Grandad and also your honesty, I have a few Folding cameras and lots of SLRs of many brands and ages, right up to and including the mirrorless Fuji’s and Olympus, but I have just purchased a Voigtlander Superb and Montanus Delmonta but also have my sights set on an Minolta as I am a big fan of their lenses and some SLRs. At 72 you’d think I’d stop but I love them and found out about ten years ago that my Grandfather had a photographic studios in there late 1800 early 1900 so I think it’s in the genes. You will get so much pleasure in the years ahead and I still have a picture of my Grand mother that I took with a box Browni in the 50s she used to come and see us every Sunday until she was 89 and then had an accident but made it to 99 born in 1983, I have subscribed and look forward to watching your, excuse Pun developing talents. I'm sold, I've ordered one from ebay. One question, you mention this is an SLR, can you actually see in the viewfinder that you have acquired focus? I know the half-press will light up an LED that the camera has locked on to something, but can you actually see that you have focused on a person rather than the background?

    • @DrewWaddell
      @DrewWaddell Год назад

      Hi! I think you just kind of have to judge by looking through the viewfinder. It is a proper SLR and not a rangefinder so if it is focused in the viewfinder, the final image should be focused properly as well

    It costs on ebay 1000 usd. Better take a film SLR with decent 28 mm lens for a fraction of cost. E.g. Nikon F80 + Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8 will do better for a ridiculous cost. Add here built-in multizone balanced fill flash, motorized film transport, better exposure metering, 5-point autofocus etc.

    • @DrewWaddell
      @DrewWaddell Год назад

      Fair point! I think its important to consider the different use cases though. A Nikon F80 may have certain advantages over the Minolta TC-1, but it is also won't fit in my pocket. The Minolta TC-1 is also undoubtedly expensive, but if it was all about practicality, nobody would shoot film. I'll have to check out the F80 sometimes, seems like a cool camera. The whole half frame thing started up in the 1960s, about the time I got into photography seriously. I never got involved at the time. Years later, I thought to get one and started looking to the Samuri. Several different models were made over the years, the main differences being the zoom range and aperture of the lens. I was about to acquire one when I realized that its exposure process is fully automatic with no practical user adjustments. For me, that killed the deal right there. Considering that most people shooting film today are scanning their negatives and posting digital positive images on social media of some sort, I'm surprised that there has been no craze for half frame, as those end-uses would look as good from the half as from full frame.

    Very well done, this is from someone who has been doing photography (film) for 65+ years. With regard to 135 (35mm) film lengths, 36, 27, 24 and 12 frame films are mostly what I have seen. Colour negative film developing is actually easier than Black and White (B&W) film developing. With B&W you have differing developing times that are dependent upon the speed of the film and the type of developer. Whereas with colour negative in the C41 process, not only are the steps easy, the whole development process is standardised and never changes no matter what type, film speed or manufacturer. I would suggest that finding a 50mm f/1.4 lens, is reasonably harder to find than a slower 50mm f/1.8 or slightly slower again f2 lens. Optically at f/4 or f/5.6 most of these lenses, including the f/1.4 will be very close. I do have one f/1.4 lens, but my 50mm f1.8 which was far cheaper is so close in most aspects, it doesn't matter. I was impressed by your mobile phone negative film image to positive in-phone image, section. I hadn't thought of doing that. But then again I'm from the generation that mainly uses a mobile phone for talking.

    New owner of this lens. Purchased before seeing the video. It isn’t as big as DLSR lenses. Perhaps if compared with compact options associated with rangefinders. Appreciate your opinions and your images are amazing. The focus ring is dampened and and feels as good as the Summilux. There are subtleties between the 2 but on digital sensors apart from the coolness in images made by the Zeiss they are both indistinguishable. And every now and then the Zeiss makes better images than the Summilux. I love this lens. Surprisingly there are so few quality reviews about this lens.

    Thanks for the video. Before I bought my Leica M6, I knew I wanted a fast 35mm lens because the 35mm f/1.4 on my Nikon SLR was my favorite focal length for shooting general subjects.
