Just joined. This is my “laid up” pleasure. You are informative, with the mannerisms of a well informed clubmate. Thanks for the great work.👌
Would love to see some weathered SP and UP units patched after the units in Searles Valley, but I might have to do that myself! I don't really have the money or space, but if I ever get a chance to make a layout, Id love a simple track through the Trona Pinnacles with these bad boys hauling covered hoppers.
will it run on 15° kato unitrack
Did it have the fuel tank clearance problem where it gets stuck?
I would not think so..
My connecting rod came off just like your video. I couldn't get it back together as the parts were way too small for my old eyes. Sent to Kato for repair. Hope it doesn't happen again. Anyone else have this problem? Nice if someone made a tutorial on how to reassemble. This video is pretty good, will need to remember it if it happens again.
Appears that Kato is much better.
From one block away from the Southern Pacific Engine House in Roseville, Calif at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada mountains, we would see five of these heading over the Hill every day !! It is Still SOUTHERN PACIFIC for some of us ! lol
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🧑🎄
Kato offers excellent precision and repairability. In terms of repairability they are even better than our german & austrian models, which I am accustomed to. It leaves less risk for damaging a model while working on them. So it's overall superior to design them that way. If you want an even better Big Boy made from zinc and smoke generator preinstalled, you'll wanna pick the Minitrix model (16990)
This one doesnt sound that great, does it sound different in person?
Thank you for your review
Hi 😅 I’m back after a long time and have had 4 heart attacks and 3 strokes ❤❤
Glad to see you. Hope you are getting better.
@ yes I’m getting better
Thank you
I've been a fan of tunnel motors since growing up with them in northern California in the 1970's as a teen graduating from high school in 1977. When these SD40T-2's were announced and ScaleTrains showed the preproduction samples - these look very well detailed, almost like an HO loco scaled down to N. Impressive! Since I am a 1970's thru early 80's fan, I purchased all of the D&RGW numbered tunnel motors and 3 of the SP tunnel motors (2 short nose and one snoot), 9 all together. I wasn't going to wait around for a review on these. I wonder if ScaleTrains only provided late era SP or UP because all the as-delivered sold out! The horn on your example sounded a bit fuzzy and weak.
I have seen this version in Ho scale to.
Very cool loco,it may be nitpicking but it looks like the truck side frames are uneven.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🫶🎃
I picked up one of these, they are great!
Check CV65 - this is the Kickstart CV which is different than CV2. I put in 2 and then change CV2 to lesser number to run at slow speeds.
Interesting. Thanks.
Thank you Ron! It sure is a stunner! 'Coventry Climax'?
Hi Ron & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Ron & Friends Randy
Put a link up where you buy them from very interested in n scale
scaletrains.com and go to the N scale menu top of the page.
I just got in 2 of the scale trains tunnel engines. They run great and the detail is fantastic. Cant wait for them to actually release a GE44 law enforcement. In like 3 years.

@IMRROcom Oh yes, that.

Is there gonna be a D&RGW version?
There already is, as I stated in the video. It is available now.
@@RonsRailReviews awesome!
Do you ever add weight to your locomotives? If so, how do you add weight?
I have never added weight to a locomotive. Most N scale locomotives do not have room to add weight. If I was goin to try, I would use the little flat weights they use for pinewood derby cars.
Yeah Ron, these units are pretty nice. I pre-ordered 3 when they were first announced and just bought another. We N Scalers have been waiting for tunnel motors from Scale trains for a LONG time and now they are finally here!
It's too bad they didn't send you an earlier SP/D&RGW version that are capable with a gyra light to show flashing in operation, although my guess is the 3 that they sent were the least popular versions.
Nice looking loco's. Question. At minute marker 8:35 on the SP train, it appears one of the front wheels is off the track. Is that correct or am I seeing something not there?
Yes it is. I didn't get it railed correctly.
I noticed that too.
Like the fact the units work out of the box when consisted.
Yes, and beautifully too.
Thanks for the comments ,RON ! I'm just restarting my love affair with N scale trains;so ALL the info i can glean,on new AND older assets ,is much appreciated!

0:13 Today I'm Going To Be Reviewing
I would buy the n model as it does have its incredible details although my only worry is the size for the price, are there any websites out there that sell for lower than retail price?
I normally do HO scale, but after seeing your videos, I have started dabbling in N scale… thanks Ron!
Its a waste of money. Better buy without DCC, buy decoder and mount it in propper way. Decoder its amazing with spkr with large enclosure. Have a lot of aux function and KOBO should be with separated and oscilating ditch lights, not at all like that original single light. I just modified all my ACe but in the propper way. I have 43 pieces of ACe, still have to modify 15. Too expensive for what they offer. Your presentation its amazing.
Buying a DC locomotive and a decoder separately is cheaper then buying it already installed? What site do you buy your locomotives and decoders?
Just wondering Ron if you’ve ever done a review on the Kato f7?
Old tooling. Wish scaletrains would do these.
I like your content ,So i sub you now 😊
Very disappointed that the Kato big boy dc version does not come DCC ready!
Do you think you'll review the bli big boy?
Great review on the Kato EMD SD70ACE locomotive which is on my bucket list to purchase to add to my N scale locomotive roster at a future date. Kato locomotives are the N scale locomotives I buy for my N scale Pacific West Coast model railroad.
I used to have a small HO layout when I was a teenager and young adult. I was thinking about getting back into it and since I have limited space was going to go N Scale. I'm dismayed to find that model railroading has become a hobby strictly for affluent adults. No way kids or people with limited income can enjoy the hobby.
Nice review, but to clarify about the "double articulation" - it's the second set of drive wheels that are rigidly mounted to the frame (not entirely, they do allow some lateral motion, but they don't pivot as a group like on the model), not the trailing truck under the cab. This "double articulation" is pretty standard in models of large articulated locomotives to deal with tight model curves and I haven't heard of any complaints about Kato doing that with the Big Boy, but I wonder if the complaints he's talking about actually have to do with the tender trucks. Kato "articulated" the rear 5 axles on the Centipede tender by using a 3-axle and a 2-axle truck where on the prototype the last five axles are rigid.
I’m getting one in DC after watching this. Thank you!
If you’re going to do a review you should include lighting features thanks
Thanks Ron! Great review!
What kind of adhesive do you use/recommend for repairing/constructing items in N scale?
Bluetooth to sub woofers would be incredible
And/or a sort of ordinary-looking stealth “tender” car (e.g. a boxcar) that’s really a bigger, better speaker.
Hi Ron! I love your channel. Which MT coupler did you end up using for the Kato SD70ace? Keep up the great work and thank you for all you do.
