  • In shooting this review I found myself surprised by Kato SD70ACe N scale locomotive. This is an excellent locomotive, but I found myself surprised by a few of its features. Let me show you why.

Hey Ron I have been running my Kato locomotives since 2004 and they still perform great. Once when I had issues I sent them to Kato and they repaired them with no charge.

I agree totally, I started buying Kato manufactured locos back in the 70's and 80's that still run perfectly. Kato locos are a great first loco that are somewhat affordable which really show what N scale is all about.

Kato has a really smooth running product. The couplers are easy to switch out to microtrains. Price is fairly priced.

Nice review and thanks as I received a KATO EMD SD70ACe for Christmas. It also is DC so I'll be ordering a decoder for it.

Well that review makes my decision for me, what a great looking locomotive and easily the equal of BLI in most details. Next pay day will be grabbing a Rio Grande heritage unit... if I can still find one😂

I have the BLI SD70ACe. The Kato is a better looking and performing locomotive all the way around.

Hey Ron Just a poke here for something to think about Trying, I had 2 Kato SD70ACE's built around the same time one Engine had a TCS Decoder one had a Digitrax both we're programed @ Kato with #3 not there actual Road number's, I was pulling a set a Cars the SD70ace with the TCS it pulled em' with no issues maybe a little wheel slip..
The Engine with the Digitrax It acted like it had nothing I switched Engines again the TCS decodered Engine pulled the load with no issues, at first l thought it might be the Motor or a Drive Train issue but they both checked out ok so with a spare TCS Decoder that fit the Engine I pulled the Digitrax set in the TCS & the pulling issue went Away.. You might try a TCS decoder if you have an extra one in a parts Drawer see if the Engine pulls a Bit Better..
As a Preference I like TCS's over the Digitrax and after I had an Experience with one of there Decoders that was supposed to be a Direct fit or factory fit Decoder it was more no fit & lots of issue & calling the Guy at Digitrax his suggestion was sand the Decoder I did it to no avail It didn't want to set in the frame I called Digitrax a second time he said sand some more he asked what decoder I had & Engine he said it was the correct one sanding more par his instructions got really close to the Decoder's vital areas of the decoder I even loosened the screws on the Frame I was at my whits End..Ron I made the decision to go with something else & ordered a TCS K1D4 it fit on the First try & no loosening of the Frame either best decision I'd ever done And my Engine is still running with it 5 years after installing it into my Engine...
Great Review.. Nice Engine.. Can't wait to see more.. Allen D

1 word of warning about this run of locomotives. Do be extremely carful with the trucks themselves. They do pull off very easily, which is fine but just be careful as there are two tiny round stoppers on either end of the worm gear. These little guys LOVE to unseat themselves and run off, as the one I have one of the 4 stoppers has done just that. 2 of them are seated nicely on the inside of the worm but the outer two that sit in the truck tower, can and do fall out. The locomotive will run fine without them but will be quite noisy since the worm gear will rattle without the helper.
I only discovered this much later after working on the frame to make space for the capacitor from a digitrax sound decoder, the speaker sat fine without any issue, but there just isn't any space for the capacitor that they add to the front of the decoder up on the front of the shell and frame.

Just got mine and it randomly derails for some reason. My kato CP ES44 runs just fine for comparison.

Kato need to go back to the non sprung trucks and build more weight back into the frame as the new models dont pull as good as the older units
