Why we love living in an intergenerational community
One of our viewers asked us what it is about community that brings peace to those who choose this way of life. Great question, with multiple answers, on numerous levels! In this video we talk about one aspect we love: the intergenerational nature of our Bruderhof community and the peace - and joy - created when people of all ages are valued.

Can planting trees improve our pastures?
Просмотров 892Месяц назад
Come along on a communal tree planting project at the Danthonia Bruderhof in NSW Australia. Today we're chatting with Richard Barth, who has helped plant tens of thousands of trees at strategic locations on our community and farm over the past 20 years. Today we're planting 500 trees of mixed varieties, as part of a renewed effort to reforest designated sections of our property. Rich tells Chri...

A big focus for our family has been participating in Danthonia Bruderhof's production of Thornton Wilder's classic play, 'Our Town'. Christmas Without You - an original Christmas song for anyone who's lost someone they love

How do you celebrate Christmas when someone you love is gone for good? Our oldest son, Jordan, wrote this song in memory of his grandfather, who passed away a few weeks before Christmas, in November 2021. Jordan recorded it this Christmas, and he and Chris made this video. Jordan invited us to share it our our channel, as an encouragement to anyone who's missing a loved one this Christmastime. ...

Merry Christmas to all our friends around the world! We thought you'd enjoy seeing the beautiful angels created by families at the Danthonia Bruderhof, which form our community's Advent calendar this year. It's a busy time of year - with lots of celebrating, carol-singing with neighbors, and festive good cheer - so it's all the more vital that we "let every heart prepare him room." Joy to the w...
Birthdays and a wedding: catching you up on recent events at our Australian Bruderhof

Hey friends. This week we thought it would be fun to share a few things we've been up to recently, from catering birthday parties, to celebrating a wedding here at the Danthonia Bruderhof community. At the same time, though, we cannot forget the many people who suffer in in this war-torn world. And with the "Voice to Parliament" referendum taking place this weekend in Australia, we remind each ...
Roots and wings: letting go of our adult kids
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
How do we let go of our adult kids, now that they've grown up and don't need us in the same way they did when they were small? All parents want to see their kids grow into mature, independent adults. When our kids are young, we dream of what they may one day become. We do our best to give them, as Henry Ward Beecher (among others) put it, both roots and wings - so they know where they're from, ...
Why we've moved to a new house at the Bruderhof - and what makes it a home

Home, Robert Frost once intoned, "is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in." Oh, but it's so much more than that, right?! Everyone is provided the space they need, but none of us owns the home we occupy, as no community member holds private pr...

    What you explain sounds lovely and I tend to romanticize things. But, being a mother and grandmother, I realize that as lovely as your life sounds, I would want to be the mother and grandmother to my own children first. I am a life long Christian and think perhaps I feel this way because this “ task” of motherhood to specific children is God given. I would miss raising up my own children and grandchildren. Just another perspective…..

      Thanks, Teresa! We of course agree fully that parents (and grandparents) have primary responsibility for their own children/grandchildren - no community, regardless of how it's structured, can or should replace that. Blessings to you and your family. 😊

    This year I have lost every generation of my family. 23 months ago I found and buried my high school senior son, 6 month after my dad died, 3 months after dad, I found my mom dead and my husband of terminal glioblastoma brain cancer. So now it's just me. I don't even know who to put down to inherit my retirement or life insurance amor any assets should I die. 3 generations wiped out within 2 years. I am not even 50 and everyone is gone. Now, I'm so lonely because I have no family.

    So great to see you here! I send a big yes to the importance of community that includes all ages. It is essential. Living together in community has a unique value, I am sure, but those of us who are not called to communal living still can choose to seek every opportunity to form relationships with families and individuals at every life stage. How rich that makes life, while it enables us to serve each other. I now live in the vicinity of the Hiwassee Bruderhof, and we drove by the community recently. It was heartening to see the restoration of the small college, formerly owned by the denomination of which I am a part, that had fallen into disrepair and was closed. I look forward to planning a visit there and to seeing more of you here. Happy Spring!

    • @DuoDownUnder
      @DuoDownUnder 18 дней назад

      Beautiful insights - thanks! Yes, we can all "choose to seek every opportunity to form relationships": it is definitely a choice. We know from our own experience what a blessing it is to have connections with people whose paths have (for all kinds of reasons) crossed ours and who have made the choice to invest in caring and friendship. That inspires us to do similarly, when and where we can. Also, that's pretty cool that you're in the Hiwassee area. From all we here, it's a lovely part of the world (and we do happen to know some lovely folk at the Bruderhof there as well!). Enjoy the season you're in too!

    Muslims? I feel severely concerned and threatened as a Christian and ethnic European, in Europe. I can show Christian charity without giving my country over to islam. Once you let islam get a proper foothold, it becomes a severe threat to Christians. Practical experience confirms that it is they, the mualims, that prevail, not Christianity.

    The intergenerational living is one thing that always draws me to the Bruderhof (well, apart from the big one of living for Christ together!). Each time I have visited as a young person and now as a mother with Elodie, I have been taken into families and really made part of them. Having ladies care for Elodie for me while I attended a night meeting, or even just going to the effort of having a few toys she would like in their living room always helped us feel welcome and eased some of the burden of being a solo parent. Gosh, we need to visit again!

    Real Peace for me--and really all of us--is only found in submitting to Jesus through the Holy Spirit. "Yield now, and be at peace with Him, and good will come to you..." (Job 22:21) Calling for HIS Will to be done. So long as we are still at war with him, demanding our own way, we will not have real peace--regardless what our lifestyle is or however many wonderful people we live with. JESUS is HIMSELF, our Peace. (Ephesians 2:14) NASB

    Wonderful seeing you, Norann and Chris! So have you moved into a new home? I wasn't sure from the introduction what space you're in now. I am, as one of our politicians described it, a "childless cat lady". I suppose "childless dust-bunny lady" would be more accurate now, since my beloved cat passed away three years ago. My adult intergenerational living experience was a very blessed one. My mother and I lived together for the last five years of her life. She enjoyed good health until her last two months, so this was not a health-related caregiving arrangement. We both just decided that we enjoyed "the pleasure of your company". It was cozy and comforting for both of us. I am so grateful for that extraordinary time we spent together.

As for where we're living: We have a lovely apartment alongside our mom's in a home at the main site of the Danthonia community. Previously we lived on an adjacent homestead, which was a fun place to be when our boys were little. Where we are now is perfect for the 'season' our family is in. Wishing you a lovely weekend! C&N

    Tolle Aktion. Wird das Ganze irgendwie wissenschaftlich begleitet? Macht ihr selber Aufzeichnungen, wie sich z.B. Temperaturen, Erträge ändern?

    • @DuoDownUnder
      @DuoDownUnder 22 дня назад

      (Translation: Great action. Is the whole thing somehow supported by science? Do you keep records of how temperatures and yields change, for example?) Thanks for the question. Yes, we do keep records and measure biomass, rainfall, moisture content, etc. We have only been farming at Danthonia for a couple decades, so our records don't cover a great amount of time, in the larger scheme of things. There is a lot of scientific evidence to support regenerative agriculture, including the effects of trees on the landscape and on productivity. See for instance this report from the University of Melbourne, one of many such articles online: growcarbon.science.unimelb.edu.au/sample-page/publications/

    What temperature was the oven on and how long did you leave the omelette to bake, please?

      Preheat the oven to 350F / 175C and bake for approx. 10 minutes, keeping an eye on it as ovens vary. Norann explains at around 4:16 in the video how to tell when the omelette is done. Good luck, and enjoy!

    You should import some beavers; they would love the landscape and would be a tremendous help against both drought and flood, as they change the landscape. But I guess, the Australian government would be quite sceptical to import yet another critter?!

      Thanks, but you're right - imported critters have done a number on Australia's native wildlife and ecosystems. What may have started out as a "good idea" typically has yielded a host of unintended consequences over the years. Also, it'd be interesting to see how beavers handle Aussie hardwoods! Lol.
