APERTURE: Why you NEED to know how it works (Tips for Beginners)

When I first started photography, aperture was the setting that confused me the most. Shutter speed is easy: the longer the shutter is open, the more light, but the more blurry things become. ISO is basic: lower number=less sensitive to light, higher number=more sensitive to light. But aperture? Oh boy... f-stops, higher=less light, lower=wider, stop numbers don't double or halve, it's an absol...

    Ironically went from 5D classic to 5D 2 recently with a quarter million on it. Just a holdover until I can find an R for a great price. Everyone is overlooking the R for the R5 and R6, where it's still the 5D IV sensor in there.

    I have that same problem develop on that same lens. After checking online, it seems it might be a thing with the Canon 24-70 f4 lens. I've just been quoted almost the same price as it cost brand new, to get it fixed! What a rip off Canon!… They should have a recall if as it seems to be happening quite a lot. I've only had it for seven years, and I don't even use it that often. Ironically it's the only lens that I've bought brand new!… 🤨

      Hey Iain, I don't think so or at least I can't remember, but nothing stands out. There are a few narrow sections but nothing particularly strenuous. It follows the lake so it's basically flat for the majority, and there are plenty of areas to stop and take a break.

    I'm also experiencing this with my canon 24-70 mm 2.8 f lens .. so frustrating how a $2400 lens can start doing this on it's own... no damage has happened to make this occur... angry I'll have to spend money to repair a problem I didn't create.

    • @LaurenKiefPhotography
      @LaurenKiefPhotography Год назад

      Also, this is the only lens that is doing this. My canon Eos 1dx has no problem working with my 100mm, 70-200mm, fish eye lens... it's only the 24-70 mm that is bringing up the error code.

    I had been weighing up the pros and cons of having square filters or circular ones on my Canon 80D. On my last camera, which is still going strong at 10 years old, a Panasonic bridge camera, I always used circular screw on filters. So then I decided to stick with screw on filters. Then I thought do I go cheap and risk the dreaded colour casts that everyone says are on them. Or do I pay more and get better quality, thinking like you say, buy cheap, pay twice. I always used Hoya ones on my Panasonic, that seemed fairly free of colour casts even on 60 second exposures. So then I found a lot of great reviews for the K&F Concept ones and a more expensive maker called Nisi. The range of Nisi ones aren't available on Amazon. I then saw on Nisi website, they do different variable ND filters, but I've not really trusted them to not get dark crosses at certain settings, though they are getting great reviews on You Tube. To my surprise though, they do a 15 stop filter, so I thought I'm definitely having that. I've ordered it and waiting for it now. I was going to get a 10 stop too, but they had sold out on 77mm ones, which is the maximum size I need for my lenses I have. Some lesser stop filters I can replicate on the Canon using the double exposure feature that allows you to stack up to 9 photos in camera without filters or simply take individual ones and stack in post. So I'm passing on any lesser stop ones till I have the money to buy them. The Nisi 77mm 15 stop one was £51 to me without VAT, as we don't pay VAT here in the Channel Islands. It was also on a black Friday deal too and came with free postage. Normal price the rest of the year, with VAT would have been £70 or £60 with VAT in the black Friday deal if I had to pay VAT. So I think I've got a bargain. Incidentally, their 15 and 10 stop filters are exactly the same price for the same size. I was expecting a huge difference. 🤷‍♂️

    I have this issue on my 24-70 f2.8 since yesterday. The lens works fine when I use it with f2.8 with any focal length. If I change the aperture to any other value, it only works with 24 mm. It really bothers me, because I need it all the time obviously and now I have to use it crippled until christmas time where I have no jobs because of the holidays. Then I can let it be repaired or just get the new RF lens for my R6 (which is waaay too expensive but what can I do..)

      I just bought a 5d2 for 140 USD, 131 euro in good condition and not used that much and if I know myself I’ll be looking at other bargain deals on maybe the 5d classic and 5d3 in the future! The end result hasn’t got better with new technology only easier to get there faster and one photographer I use to watch even claims that the end result was better with these old ones because they had these unique colors modern cameras doesn’t have.

    The way these work is you have two polarizers - when they're crossed at 90 degrees you have the maximum degree of darkening. So I wouldn't expect a linear scale. i suppose if they'd done it correctly they'd have put a calibrated scale on the rings that correspond to stops. I have one of these (a MUCH cheaper brand, mind you) and I've played with it a little. At lower settings, you can just use the camera's meter (set the camera to aperature priority and adjust the filter to get the shutter speed you want). When it gets really dark the metering fails - I find at this point I have to switch everything to manual (including the focusing) and then take several shots, adjusting the shutter speed until I get one exposed correctly. More or less the same procedure as when shooting with a R72 infrared filter (except that, with this, you can "open it up" to do the initial focusing instead of having to remove the lens). Thinking of buying some K&F filters, many RUclipsrs say they're very high quality (unusual for a Made-in-China brand), but a lot of them are way outside my price range (especially the magnetic ones).

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography Год назад

      Thanks for that, that's interesting! I've got a 10 stop square filter from K&F and it's significantly better than a cheap Gobe I have AND better than a really expensive B+W ring mount. I would highly recommend it.

    similar issue here, but its only doing it on different cameras, I have a 5D3 and 7D2 and 6D, the 24-70 lens works perfectly on the 5D3 but throws error code with the other 2 cameras. I have other L lenses that work flawlessly on all my cameras, so I'm thinking it has to be an internal lens issue too. Sending lens away for a look at.

    I'm in the market for a hiking camera bag and couldn't decide between the 350AW and the 450AW. Well, thanks to your brilliant video, I've now decided on the 450. Your comparison of the two bags side by side was so helpful and the amount of camera gear you could fit into each bag was the clincher. Like you, I have a thing for camera bags (6 so far!!) and am always on the quest for the perfect bag. I always think the latest one I buy is THE one - but of course it never is. However, the 450 AW looks like the best I've ever seen. So thanks again for your help. Cheers, mate.

    If Canon would have came out with a Mirrorless camera with the same button layout as the 5Dmk2, they would have sold a ton of them. I switched to Sony cameras, but I still kept my 5Dmk2. Mainly because mine is in mint condition, and when ever I go into a bad neighborhood, I take the 5Dmk2. If someone steals it, I can replace it for not a huge amount of money. If some one steals my A7S3 or A7R3, I'll be out a crap load of money.
