Reflect dropps the guards becaus ethey subconsciously see themselves. Then they are open to your question. Your question should be one that requires more than a yes or no answer. This waybit can only be asnwered by your logic part of your brain. You cannoy be in both fight and logic. As the person switches to logic brain they immediately calm down. It taoes aome time for the cortisol to also diminish so yhey will have feeelings of agitation bit they are on their way. Asking quesstions is an activation type of conversation and it also helps the person to own their own problem rather than dropping it on your desk to deal with.

When we are angry are ability to reason and make good decisions diminishes massively, so saying calm down is supportive towards having a calm state of mind to best and most effectively resolve the issues at hand

It’s true, that childish emotional warground leads to nothing but assuming that logic is something that a woman/wife needs in an argument ignores their emotional nature. Men are clearly more logical and rational. Women are by nature much more emotional and gut feeling driven. It’s normal for beings that have that much at stake when it comes to offsprings. The most arguments are emotional because they involve very emotional reasons like: is this or that good for my kids and their education. Women, especially mothers get in rage, when they feel something can damage anything for their kids. When they don’t see the man getting on the same emotional level and deeply understand their concerns und when men don’t understand their emotions, then it’s futile to try to convince the woman. It’s like arguing in different languages.

I like this "reflect and diminish" technique. In the past, the "reflect" part was known as "commiserating" or "empathizing". As others have stated, it's a way of validating the other person's feelings, and showing them you're on the same team. What about when the other person is (rightfully) angry at YOU? Answer sincerely, without sarcasm or brushing it off, "Yeah, I know. That was STOOpid. I don't know what I was thinking, or if I was even thinking at all! What can I do to help make this better?" Own your mistakes to show you're on the same team. I've used this technique personally; can confirm it works.
