      Thanks for the kind words, Julian. In Reaper Preferences, do you have ASIO set as the Audio System? I'm not a Mac user, but Behringer's site does appear to list an updater for the Mac version of X-USB. www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=0606-ABV - Look under the 'software' tab on the right of the page for 'X-USB updater Mac Version 10'. Also remember to have the mixer ON before loading any software. By default, any program that uses the X32 will load up looking for the device and its associated drivers, which may not be loaded if the X32 is off. I'm also seeing some people saying that the X-USB driver isn't required for Mac. I'm not well informed in the Mac space, so my recommendation is to download the Updater file anyway and install it. Aee what happens. Let me know how it goes!

      I sold cymbal cleaners for 25 years. There’s nothing in them that isn’t in household products. Just about any mild acid will clean a metal surface. The only time you need to be careful is if the cymbal is coated in a brilliant finish - but that’s typically only done on cheaper models.

    If you only have the 16 inputs channels to work with and don’t have the extra add on that gives you an additional 16, does that mean you lose 8 channels if say I just wanted to send 1 click track and that was it? This is based off what I noticed in the routing portion of your video.That’s where I’m A bit confused. Hope that makes sense.

    • @Damo_Drummer
      @Damo_Drummer Месяц назад

      Hi Casey. It can be a little confusing - especially for live musicians. The X32rack accommodates 32 inputs - 16 of which are XLR on the back, plus a few additional auxillary inputs. In other words, without the S16 add-on, you will only be able to plug 16 XLR based instruments into the X32, even though the software for the X32 can accommodate more. The card output/playback channels are (by default) controlled in groups of 8, however Behringer has since updated the firmware so that card output channels can now be controlled *individually* under a "User Out" menu. So, technically, it is possible to input 31 instruments, and just have one playback channel - in your case, a click - playing back through your X32 card, on channel 32. All of this stuff is obviously a lot easier to visualize and test if you own the X32 already, but if you're simply wondering whether the X32rack can accommodate channel by channel input/output and playback for live running of backing tracks etc, then the answer is "yes". Disclaimer! I have actually moved away from running backing tracks back through the X32 card. I now use Ableton Live, controlled by a separate laptop and interface, which outputs my tracks via XLR to the X32. The X32 treats the tracks like any other plugged-in instrument, but separating the playback system from the X32 entirely mitigates risk and lightens the load. Hope this helps!

    Pro sound engineer here from the Chicago area. Great job explaining things so thoroughly and thoughtfully. It's often very difficult to convey highly technical information to folks who may not have the same level of technical knowledge. You did so in a very clear, concise, and non-condescending way. Nicely done. The only thing that I might have added is the use of ambient mics added to the mix to combat that in-ear isolation you explained so well. As an engineer who has done countless shows from pro-touring acts to garage bands, with every monitor solution/set-up imaginable, I can say that I always appreciate a well-prepared band rolling in with their own closed wireless IEM gear. Makes life SO much better for everyone involved. I can also say from experience that those are almost always the bands that sound the best at FOH. Getting rid of all that stage volume makes the FOH mix so much better. That far superior FOH mix means the audience experience is vastly improved. That then equals more, and better future bookings for the band. Something that all bands should seriously think about.

    • @Damo_Drummer
      @Damo_Drummer Месяц назад

      Thank you for the kind words, and also for illustrating the advantages from the perspective of the sound engineer - Something musicians dont think enough about! You are absolutely correct about ambient mics. They are a must-have for my in-ear mixes, and in fact I BEGIN an in-ear mix with them, as its the crucial element that puts the musician back into the 'room'. Without them (and this is particularly true for newcomers to the in-ear ecosystem) one can feel 'cut-off' from the gig.

    • @Damo_Drummer
      @Damo_Drummer 3 месяца назад

      The backing tracks enter the x32rack as INPUTS. Like any other input on the mixer, it can then be sent to multiple outputs. On the X32 rack, the FoH outputs are generally outputs 7 and 8 by default. If for example, you have your backing tracks being sent to input channels 24-32, you’d need to raise the volume of those same channels on outputs 7 and 8. In that regard, the FoH outputs are no different to any of the other buss channels used for feeding IEMs, etc. Make sense?

    A brilliant breakdown of your set up and application. Cheers. Do you know if it would be possible using a Behringer X32 and S16 digital snake for 6 band members each have a stereo IEM mix with instruments panned which they could adjust themselves on the ipad etc? Or is there only one possible stereo mix which they'd all have to share? Thanks in advance.

    • @Damo_Drummer
      @Damo_Drummer 3 месяца назад

      Hi George! Assuming youre talking about X32 rack and not the X32 desk? The X32 rack has 8 bus sends (outputs) and the S16 will provide an additional 8. Bus sends can actually be linked together, so sends 1 and 2 can either be two separate mono sends, or one linked stereo send. This is true for the other channels too. Two sends are used for the main outputs (By default these are sends 7 and 8 on the X32rack) but with 6 band members you could link the following way as an example, and each player could have their own unique mix for each stereo bus send: Bus 1/Bus2 - Stereo linked on the X32Rack, bandmember 1 Bus 3/Bus4 - Stereo linked on the X32Rack, bandmember 2 Bus 5/Bus6 - Stereo linked on the X32Rack, bandmember 3 Bus 7/Bus8 - Stereo linked on the X32Rack, bandmember 4 Bus 9/Bus10 - Stereo linked on the S16, bandmember 5 Bus 11/Bus12 - Stereo linked on the S16, bandmember 6 Bus 15/Bus16 - Stereo linked on the S16, Main outputs Hope this helps!

    Bar Keepers Friend is not great if you really care about your cymbals, it's far too abrasive, may as well use Brasso brass cleaner if you are going to use Barkeepers.After all Bar keepers is a stain remover, and that requires abrasion to metal. Cleaning what is already clean cymbal is rather a strange idea. If you want to keep new cymbals looking new, use cotton gloves when you tear down and set up your kit. the less you touch them, the cleaner they will stay. It's sweat and human finger oils that tarnish cymbals. A lot of modern cymbals come to you with an easy clean surface so a soft cloth is all you need to clean them. It's a pain to have to do this, but worth it in the end. A light coating of carnuba wax thoroughly polished off after application, will form a barrier to dirt and greasy fingers, which makes cleaning and buffing easier. Most easily available so called Cymbal cleaners available today are only polish, they will not clean dirty cymbals as the old paiste, Zildjian etc. cleaners did. Legislation has deemed them bad for the environment, so don't waste your money paying premium prices for a branded cymbal cleaner, just use washing up liquid and some mild, easy to use car polish.

      Hey there! Its not an easy answer without taking into consideration a bunch of factors. I mean you could go a full rig like I have, but its heavy, expensive, and can be time consuming to set up. If yours is an original band and only playing 45 mins sets once every few weeks, youd probably be better off with a set of earpieces and a body pack, then get the front of house engineer to provide you with your in ear mix. You wont have a lot of control that way, but it does take a lot of the burden of setup out of your hands - especially when theres quick changeovers between bands, and you're expected to get on and offstage in ten minutes!
