Heading for the wide open spaces. We've been living in our van since July 2023. Dione began chemo for breast cancer, so we have had a year of being settled near our local hospital. Hopefully travel adventures will begin by end of 2024. Life is good and we love our van, Bryan. #vanlifeuk #vanlife #fulltimevanlife
It's getting steamy in Somerset!
We have arrived at Hoburn Holiday Camp in Blue Anchor Bay, Somerset.
We decided to take the 15 minute steam train ride from Blue Anchor into Minehead. This was the first time Dione had travelled on a steam train. The West Somerset Railway (WSR) is a 22.75-mile (36.6 km) heritage railway line in Somerset, England. The freehold of the line and stations is owned by Somerset Council. The railway is leased to and operated by West Somerset Railway plc (WSR plc), which is supported and minority-owned by the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA) charitable trust and the West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust (WSRHT). We start our week at Uley Long Barrow, (known locally as Hetty Pegler’s Tump after Hester Pegler who owned the land in the 17th century.) It is a Neolithic burial mound, at least 5,000 years old. Between 15 and 20 skeletons have been recovered from the burial mound over the years, but little is known about these finds now. Because we are so close to the Welsh border, we venture into Welshpool. The town is four miles from the Wales-England border and low-lying on the River Severn. It is a charming town, but we found a few empty store fronts, scaffolding and felt the place needed a few licks of paint, although we did visit on a dreary, rainy day. I dont think either of us have ever been on a steam train either, it looks fun and a bit of a novelty. Lovely to see Watchet again, you had better weather than us 😂 Yankee Jack, I totally forgot to include info on him in our video or we just ran out of time, but over his life he sang many sea shanties which have been recorded/written down somewhere. I'm sure there's a National Trust place related to him nearby too. Really astonishing he lived so long - sea air and singing I guess?! The abbey looked a peaceful place to go back to the past, and Minehead is somewhere we've never been, maybe to the supermarket, I can't remember 😂 Hope you're enjoying Somerset ❤
We've lucked out on the weather so far. We had 1 day of rain, a few days of cloud and the rest, sunshine! Although we're back in Redditch today and the car has frosted over this morning! We stayed in hotel last night after driving up for appointments. Blue Anchor looks warmer this morning, so we will be glad to get back there later today! Thanks for the info about Jack! I didn't even think to Google him. Yes, you probably got groceries in Minehead. The morrisons also has LPG. Our train car had old fashioned curtains but none of the others did and the guy we were sat with told us it's because a new Agatha Christie, coming out at Xmas, had been filmed in that train car 2 weeks earlier. He also recommended a few places to go and not to go 😁. Always great to speak to friendly locals! Thanks for catching up with us!! It means a lot! Have a great weekend! ❤️ ❤️❤️
Thanks for showing us Tetbury, that definitely looks worth a visit, even the ridiculous Highgrove shop 😂 Had no idea Charlie and Cam lived there, I wonder if they'll let us park up on their drive. I just fancy a burger in a layby now too 😂❤

Oh Lacock looks perfect, when we drive through that area again we'll have to pay a visit. Did you use mics in that bit where you were both talking in the van introducing the video etc? The sound was really clear given how far back you were. I think you've got the right idea having a little car and then staying on sites for a few weeks. You've gor the best of both worlds, especially when you're in some of the trickier places, like if you go to Cornwall. Safe travels both ❤
No mics in the van. And remember it's deceptive how far back it looks, lol! Definitely recommend Lacock, especially since you have NT. We only saw about 1/3 of it as we missed the mansion and grounds. Advantages for having the car are big for us, but for you guys, you might get bored 😂 but it's great having the extra storage. We will probably ditch the car when we go to Scotland, may be in spring. Like you, we don't plan much 😂 but loving having the car here in Somerset as there are tons of places on our doorstep. ❤️❤️
Love the hair with the blue tips 😍 As you know we went to Cirencester and yes, its very expensive, but nearly 20 quid for a small fish and chips is absurd. Was it battered in gold?! We did however buy a coffee from that little van near the church in the main square, and you know what, that was one of the best Americanos we've ever had. So so smooth, not that we're experts. I dont know why we didnt film it actually. We enjoyed a browse around that huge charity shop too, I nearly bought a jacket but it didnt quite fit. The campsite looked very cosy, i liked the look of the pitches! ❤

The blue skies were so unexpected!! And yes I bought a 4 quid small backpack in the charity shop 😂 my old one was too big and bulky. We will be staying near Weston at the end of the month. Oh my god that drive! I wondered why I recognised the names Burway and Long Mynd, then when I saw you going up it, I realised why. That road scared the absolute **** out of me when we did it a couple of years ago! Never again, and I'm just the passenger 😂 I dont think Stephen fancies trying it again either. I'm really shocked there's no crash barrier. Maybe they leave it like that so the sheep can pass? Either way, I'm surprised there aren't regular horrific accidents there. But...it is kind of worth it once you're there for the views and access to the Shropshire Hills proper. That's what you have to tell yourself, anyway! Never been to The Bog (love the thumbnail 😂) but it looks an interesting place to visit on the mining history. Great video, even if it brought back awful memories of that ******* hill! 😂

I think you'll enjoy the one I hope to put up at the end of this week, as you'll recognise some places in Somerset. I'm glad we were in our small car for the Long Mynd. We're really enjoying your latest vlogs! Hope the weather is holding up for you!! We're loving Somerset and this campsite at Blue Anchor is 19 a night. @vanandrewschrisanddione at least you're trying with the audio though, we still haven't bothered with mics for our phone camera and we really need it sometimes. Must look into that! So pleased you're enjoying Somerset, look forward to catching up on those. 19 a night is pretty amazing if an indoor pool is included! That's with electric too? Can't do much better than that! That's utterly bizarre about the Wimpy! I fancy one now, its been years. You still see them about, but I'm sure it used to feel like they were on a par with McDonald's and Burger King in the 80s and 90s. Not sure what happened. Loving Chris in the wig 😂 Much Wenlock (another funny English name) is one we've never been to. I love a stroll around old ruins (we all know what Stephen thinks 🤦♂️) so hopefully we can go there at some point. That mustve been frightening being so close to that explosion, apparently it was one of the biggest evacuations ever here post-WW2. A chemical plant as well 😬 How did no one die?! We just loved Much Wenlock and went there several times. It's not very big and the ruins are English Heritage. We decided to get both EH and NT and see what we used most. So far, it's pretty even 😂. But, as you said, the NT car parks come in handy. ❤️❤️❤️
@vanandrewschrisanddione oh interesting, it'll be good to see which one you prefer or use the most! So far we're finding there's a lot more National Trust places by comparison to make it worth the money, plus all the car parks. They are both great either way though 😍

Thank you 😂 I think I have figured out the mic problems 😉. I wouldn't want to come here in high season and the pitches just about fit 6m but it's 19 pounds a night with access to pool and sauna, which we will do on a rainy day 😂. We've been taking advantage of good weather and getting a bit further afield the last few days. Love it here so far! Xx

Its Ridiculous Last time i used the public Toilets in my town they were Free and Clean .Unbelievable. but it is a Northern Town .
Yes, it's sad 😔 our last video we were in Welshpool and they had a perfectly good public toilet that looked like it had been closed for years. The local signs still directed people to this toilet. Thank you for watching and commenting 😁

Hi 👋 both oh my I hate roads like that one nearly poos one’s self when are on a rd like that North Yorkshire moors are like that only been to Welshpool a couple of times when we had a static we would go to the old station Welshpool gifts Edinburgh mill little cafe up stair I love gift shops there’s a Charlie’s big garden centre to in Welshpool that’s nice to look round and a larger cafe we like newton and Machynlleth and aberdovey when we were down our van great video both hope all ok for u Dione after hospital big hugs Clare ❤️🇬🇧x
No way could I have driven on that road! We both thought we may have been a bit tough on Welshpool. The weather wasn't great and I think that didn't help. When we watched the video back, it actually looked prettty nice. Next time we're back in Shropshire or Wales, I'll need your advice on where to go! Thank you so much Clare, I really love your comments! And we are all good. We got to Dursley on Sunday and haven't done a lot yet. I usually just need a couple of days of rest after jab, but it's not near as bad as actual chemo and only 2 more to go. If you're on fb, I'm Dione Spencer Andrews, with our logo on it.
