I Tested 6 Different 1/2" Flex Head Ratchets: Here's My Favorites
The 18" flex head is my favorite combo when it comes to 1/2" drive ratchets. I test and compare the Icon, Snap-on, Gearwrench, Capri, DieHard, and Cat/Williams.

For Part 1 of the Review: ruclips.net/video/pgwfVj8WKeU/видео.html This is part two and final video of the Icon ball Joint Press (57996) (BJJP-16). In this video I use the Icon press on a GMC 3500 and it made the Icon work. I also compared the Icon to the Snap-on BJP1. I truly believe that the Icon Press is the best Bang for Your Buck Press. With that said it is NOT to the level of the Snap-on....

Is the Icon Worth It? Harbor Freight's NEW Ball Joint Press
What lube you're using? You said Lucas, but which one? Thanks.
I have a similar one from HF and I don’t like how the ends come off easily, the slots move around when you have some pliers out and you open and close the drawer multiple times and then moving the slots back are not easy and a pain to deal with. Please do an update on your step in a few months. If this brand slots stay in place I will look into buy them.
ICON ratchets are trash
Mid priced tools are so good these days, your paying that extra 50%+ for an extra 3% quality in the big 4
You have got to be kidding me. I am a disabled veteran and I lost my Entire tool collection back in 2015 when I got injured in the Army and then medically disabled. I couldn’t afford to pay all of my bills anymore while waiting for disability and so my truck and motorcycle were repossessed the day after Christmas. The Next month we couldn’t afford rent or come up with the money in time so we had to move and I sold all of my tools, car parts and almost everything in our home. 9 years Later I am finally starting to rebuild my tool collection and I just happened to get a lot of Sunex Sockets, rolling work table and miscellaneous equipment from Sunex. I was just looking for good quality budget tools that I can afford to buy to replace all my Old Craftsman Tool sets while living on VA disability. Now I find out they are Being made in China instead of Taiwan… man this Really Hurts my Heart and my Wallet. I really really need good quality tools that are affordable on a small limited income. I barely have half of the basic tools I need to work on my car and everything I’ve been buying lately has been from Sunex.. thinking about Tekton or Neiko or capri for now. Any advice?
Thank you for your service. This Country does not do enough for our vets. Glad to hear your back on your feet. Thank you again. I don't know anything about Neiko besides what I've seen on youtube but I have been buying Tekton lately. I also have a buddy that buys a lot of Tekton. He has zero complaints. I think Tekton is a very good brand. Also their warranty program is really good. I only have their chrome sockets, extensions, and dead blows as of right now. I have zero complaints.
@ Awesome! Thank you for replying and thank you for seeing that too, our Country doesn’t do much for us after war. The last 9 years have been a nightmare. Ever since the eviction, we have not been able to get approved for an apartment on our own. We were homeless a few times from El Paso, TX to Arizona to Michigan and we finally found a place to co-sign on an apartment for us But. To start up and Every year after we have to fork up a $1,000 Risk Fee, they charge us $300 more than our actual rent and the last 4 years have done Nothing to help build our credit back up so still after paying on time/early every month for 4 years we still can’t get approved on our own for an apartment or house. Every two months I do a klarna for a tool or part I need for my car. My car has been down for 7 years now waiting for me to get the tools to start working on it. I still just need a Jack and Jack Stands before I can remove the wheels or do anything under there. And Oh Yeah I live in Michigan now and I found out about Tekton and they’re made locally, well partially made local, some are made in Taiwan I believe. I appreciate videos like these because I’m not very smart anymore and i can’t keep up with all these new tool Brands. I Haven’t bought tools in over 10 years, i don’t know if I should even buy another air tank or go cordless electric for power tools. I have brain damage that causes a learning disability and just get confused and overwhelmed pretty easily when I’m looking for tools to buy online. Even tho I’ve used tools quite a bit before, I feel brand new when looking for tools. I know how to fix cars but at the same time I feel like a noob every time mess with my car. But I feel like once I get the rest of the tools And parts I need, and I start taking things apart on my car, I feel like everything I know will start to come back to me ya know? So I still have hope that I can get this car finished and up and running before I pass away. This will be my gift to my son if I finish it. Thanks again for the input. And I’m Sorry, I talk a lot and Say so much more than necessary.
The DieHard ratchets are a real sleeper. They have smooth ratchet mechanisms, are $20 less than the IGOTCONNED and totally blow ICON out of the water. I was never a comfort grip fan as they felt spongy and durability is a factor. I really like the firm feel of the DieHard comfort grip and I think it will hold up over the long haul. I prefer a ball detent on my flex heads. My one and only 1/2" flex head is a 36 tooth US made Craftsman raised panel. I have a 3/8" bent handle flex head DieHard and absolutely love it. I am thinking of getting the 1/2" DieHard flex head as a back up to my Craftsman.
I don't know how much you use your 1/2" flex but I don't think you can go wrong with getting the DieHard. Now, I don't know much about what DieHard offers but maybe they have a ball dent or locking flex. I'm rather new to the DieHard brand. This is the only one I own.
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench DieHard ratchets are limited to just the standard flex heads. No ball detent or locking flex heads. I don't use the 1/2" flex head often.
Sunex is garbage for this and have lost their good name ..
Yep, I can't believe they would do this. They've been a real staple in the impact socket world for quite awhile.
I got the icon with. 40% off coupon and the icon 25” breaker bar and put them together with a shim and it’s my go 1/2 ratchet with a lifetime warranty,,,to me the warranty and coupon price is unbeatable it’s easy to switch out I kept that other parts to switch back if it breaks but if put that thing threw its paces and it’s kept up no problems,,,,,
Heck of a deal. I was wondering about putting the head on a breaker bar. I was curious if it would hold up. Glad to hear it does. I'll have to get my hands on another ratchet. I assume they will be on sale for black friday.
@ they have 15% off this weekend for itc members
@@DUMPTHETRUCK I might have to run to town. I need a few other things too.
Hello again, Two Turtles and a Wrench Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I enjoyed watching tonight's video. I don't have any of the ratchets. And no flex head ratchets either. I do have Old School Craftsman. Husky 144 tooth, and Harbor Freight Roto Head Ratchets. Again thank you 👌
Glad you enjoyed it. How do you like that roto head? I was thinking about trying one.
put a Snap-On handle on the die hard and you'll have something to pass down
I'm curious how the DieHard handle will hold up. I don't purposely abuse my tools but I also don't treat them like prized jewels either.
I used a feeler guage to shim my icon lol. It’s pretty nice now.
There you go. The shim definitely helps a lot. I really like my Icon after screwing with it
you should humble my Theory that if you open the Cat and teh snap on I think they are different internals and not the same as the snap-on I already know that the material composition is an industrial blend Steel and not the same as the snap on blend ... so if you have time can you open them up So I can know for sure if I am right or wrong on the internals ..
The CAT internals are not the same as the Snap-on 80’s. The CAT’s internals are the same as the Williams though.
I really enjoyed your video. I have all 3 Die-Hard flex ratchets. I also am extremely impressed by them. I did put superlube in the 1/4 and 3/8 with good results BUT I noticed the 1/2 I had to take out the superlube and put in 3&1 oil. It preferred lighter lube for some reason. I was also impressed by the internals they were machined very well and used o-rings (all 3 Die-Hard ratchets I have are sealed heads) I don't have an Advance Auto near me so I ordered them online. I also emailed customer service and they assured me they will warranty the ratchets with a simple picture since I cannot take it to their stores.
Yeah I’m really impressed by them. Good to know the warranty process seems simple.
No Tekton?
No unfortunately. Sorry. The funds just ain’t there
if you are a career tech buy snap on ratchets. they are the best and i do not regret buying mine at all. BUT if you are a apprentice, casual tech or a DIY guy, there is no need to spend they insane amounts of money, brands like gear wrench and tekton are really nice at a much more affordable cost
I couldn't agree more.
I got the whole die hard set 3pc for 30 bucks when they had a clearance sale. Absolutely love them. Seems to be the same as the capri and close enough to the icon to probably say all 3 come from the same manufacturer. The diehard handle is the same as icon handle just different color. The gearwrench 120xp is my go to 9 out of 10 times just due to how smooth it is. I went then the extended ratchets and the locking flexheads and am happy with them. Was getting worried man I been looking daily for new videos 😂 seems you been busy
Haha. Been busy getting ready for winter. Haven't had much spare time. If a guy would keep the yard clean I wouldn't have to spend 3 weeks every fall moving crap so I don't hit it when I'm moving snow. Also I need to quit buying crap cause I'm running out of storage. Dang you got a steal on them DieHards. The Gearwrench is definitely smooth. I just can't deal with the ball detent. I'm pretty picky on tools anymore. I used to use whatever. But in the last 5 years I really turned into a high maintenance guy. And I ain't happy about it. 🤣
I love the DieHard Ratchets I love them so much i have two set for the money you can't beat them.
I completely agree. Best bang for your buck for sure.
Be cool if ypu grabbed that Craftsman v series 1/2 set from lowes, on clearance right now! I'd like to see that 1/2 v series ranked
I did think about it but I was already too deep in to spend anymore money. If I actual made money on the videos I would be all in but until then I have to keep it in budget.
@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench oh I know! Lowes has a 3 ratchet deal for $59 comes with all 3 flex head sizes at the moment.
Craftsman V-series are not serviceable. Just throw away ratchets.
@JohnCorbet-w4g aw! Good to know after I spent money's on the set! But I'm just a weekend warrior, f it
If backdrag is an issue, it never has been with me, still an interesting vid though, the old JH williams superratchets 60 years old are still good ratchets
Yeah backdrag ain’t a thing till it’s a thing. I found out the hard way hanging upside down in a skid steer for a half hour trying to get one stupid bolt out. Ever since then I kind of prioritize it. Most new ratchets are good enough.
Could you test Amsoil gun oil and also Amsoil chain lubricant Amsoil spray grease and Amsoil silicone spray
No promises but I do need to put an Amsoil order in. I’ll see what I can do.
GW 120xps come with a locking flex. Out of all the locking flex heads GW wins for sure. Diehards are amazing, use them daily. They also sell the diehards in chrome handles too. But snap on still gets me tickle pink.
Good to know about the Diehard handles. My store only had comfort grips. I’ll have to check the website out. Also glad to hear they hold up
@ for the money, they’re a steal. Blows all the store brand ratchets away.
@@robertomilanecky Completely agree. They are the best off the shelf ratchets I've found.
Snap-On ratchets are my favorite and Matco are my second choice. By the way, I see you on CP's Live shows sometimes.
I’ve never tried a Matco. I see a lot of people praise them. I’m not a pro so it’s hard to get on a truck to check them out
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench: I bought a shit ton of Matco 3/8" and 1/4" Locking flex-head ratchets back about 6 months ago when they had their 40% off sale. The only knock I give Matco ratchets is that some of the ratchets I received were lacking proper lube (I mean oil). Once I added alittle Super Lube Oil it was good to go. The 88 tooth is (I feel) a great sweet spot in ratchet tooth count. While the Matco gear isn't as smooth as the Snap-On Dual 80, it is pretty F-ing good. You mentioned you don't like the soft handle, If you buy some Matco ratchets get atleast one with the soft handle. The Matco soft handle is not as bulky (some people have commented) as the Snap-On soft handle. If you need a second opinion on Matco soft handle, ask CP his opinion.
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench: Unfortunately, Matco doesn't have any non-locking flex head ratchets. You had mentioned that in your video that you are not a fan of locking flex head ratchets. This is something I needed to inform you on before you commit to Matco.
@@chrisparman2080the good thing about Marco locking flex heads is when they’re unlocked they feel just like a normal flex head ratchet. Smooth, no detent, and the switch is recessed and never gets hit by accident. I think the gear mechanism is a little lacking, but hands down the best locking mechanism out there.
OMG Cat is Snap-on band wagon 🤦🤦🤦 half of Cat tools are Snap-on Blue Point aka Williams. Everyday use Snap-on for me and GW has also done very well for me as well. Awesome video
Thanks for watching. I’ve noticed some of the CAT stuff is more expensive than the actual Snap-on and Williams stuff. Seems crazy to me.
@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench I don't know why all of the sudden the whole Cat tools is the rage it's been like that for many years. I never did anything with it because my closest Cat dealer is 45 minute drive and my Snap-on guy is at my place every 2 weeks lol
Yeah it’s just an internet thing. I got suckered in. I was in need for a for a ratchet and seen a video on it and I’m like sweet I can’t get it at half the price. I should’ve know better. I’m usually pretty good at doin my homework but not this time.
I have the Diehard 3/8 version. I love it. I'm debating on whether I'd appreciate the locking Gearwrench over the non-locking Diehard.
I’m very impressed with the DieHards. To me they are the best bang for your buck ratchet out there. I know people that love their locking gearwrench. I don’t think you would be in the wrong getting one. Myself I’ve never tried one
Mix 5W30 and synthetic grease until it’s the consistency of honey. Stays where you put it but the lower viscosity should keep things from sticking. Also works great on guns
@@Professionalpatternrecognizer this is the kind of feedback I appreciate. I’ll have to check it out
Caring about country of origin is beyond stupid. It does not matter. Try toning down the xenophobia.
I have nothing against people from other countries. Never said anything derogatory towards specific people. I did sarcastically make humor at certain ideologies. I and many others do care about the quality of products we purchase. With my experience Country origin definitely matters when it comes to quality. Not saying China doesn't make nice products. But they definitely make some very bad ones. Have a wonderful day.
I love you're channel! I hope you come out with more! I just bought this kit, there is a coupon out for it now. Seems nicer than the Astro kit the shop has. Very excited to use it!
Thanks man. I’ve been pretty busy and haven’t been getting anything out but vids are coming. Never used the Astro kit but the cups holding together is so nice.
For anyone that is interested in this press, it appears (according to the email I just received) that Harbor Freight has just raised the price to $230.00
I figured they would raise the price. Makes sense
I think the ultimate test is Dodge Ram ball joints..
I agree. Luckily I don't own a Dodge. I honestly don't think it will handle it. You more than likely will need heat and some hammering
So wrenches are skateboard wheels now, ok
Well if you really think about it what really is the difference between a duck and a ladder. You know
Hello again, Two Turtles and a Wrench Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I enjoyed watching tonight's video. Question for you about the GW pliers rack. How do you adjust the the length of the rack. For example, the rack is 12" inches long. And you have a 20" drawer. Now your two inches over the dimensions. Again thank you 👌
I cut the “rail” down with a bandsaw. Thanks for stopping by.
I always attach a drill to an extension on a new ratchet. Quick and dirty.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll try it out on my next one
I use Gun oil . Works good .
Yeah it works really well. I pretty much use Lucas Gun oil now.
Well, not buying anything from them.
Same here
I just used a vintage Craftsman yesterday to do a thermostat on my Pontiac G6 convertible.
USA Craftsman still getting the job done
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrenchIndeed.
Btw kids. Don’t get on the Trucks unless you want to spend money. 8mm-19mm skipping 9mm. Ratcheting adjustable flex wrenches with push button detent. $385
Yep it ain’t cheap. That’s for sure
Man, this stuff is all the stuff I’m regretting lol. Bought a 3/8 metric and sae deep and shallow Snap-On set with a wrench and a couple extensions included in a blow molded case…..$1700 oh but my snap on guy gave me half off😂
Haha. If it’s half you have to buy it. 😂
Oh man, I lent my former step brother (been brothers since we were 8 and 12 and I’m 30) and didn’t pester him enough to get em back super quick. My Matco box and 10 years worth of tools in it. Anywho my parents went through a NASTY divorce. Got a job as a heavy equipment agricultural and construction diesel technician for a big company and had to completely rebuild. With nothing but a harbor freight 5 drawer flip top and some misc tools. I’m not even remotely close to having the tools I need and I’m about $3,500 in debt with wrenches, bits, impacts, ratchets, socket sets etc. shit sucks
Damn that freakin sucks. I can only imagine the bullshit having to deal with that.
Yeah very disappointing news! I have Sunex for sockets I don’t care about and was impressed with the quality for the money. Now that they are made in China I’ll keep what I have but good forward probably buy Williams made in USA for cheap bang around sockets
I’m with you there
Harbor Freight warrant claims are incredibly painless. It's almost astonishing, they don't ask you any questions just look up the part number go grab it off the self then give you the piece that broke, then throw the rest of the kit in the open box section.
I added the wave washer and super lube synthetic oil to my icons and now I grab them more than my snap-on and mac's. (Not sorry snap/mac superfans)I've only had them a few months but so far they've been great in an industrial setting so the jury is still out about long term.
I’m about there too. After screwing around with this Icon I have it dialed in pretty damn good right now. I agree. Time will tell
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench i picked up a couple of the quinn ratchets in 1/4 and 3/8 a couple weeks ago to give them a go, too. not bad but i think they need some wear in time. i've actually swapped out my truck brands for icon and box store options about 6 months ago just as an experiment to see how similar they all are in real world applications instead of just torquing a bolt to death in a vise. see how everything goes after a full year of abuse.
@@maxxdv8 That's the only real way to test them. Let me know how they hold up
Quality has been slipping for years, Im with you! folks dont waste your money with sunex! To many other good companies to deal with
I completely agree
Apparently I don't have enough tools to need special Organizer... still nice video
Well I know how to solve that problem. Get to buying. Haha
Dude, you are killing it! A harbor freight review with an actual demo? I think that’s the first RUclips vid I’ve seen of an icon tool that wasn’t just set on a bench and talked about for 20 minutes how it looks just like snap on 😂😂😂
Thanks man. I'm definitely not just an unboxing guy. I prefer to try the tool before saying its good unlike other RUclipsrs.
It's not stupid to have some in mothballs. Tools where some faster than others, but if they don't make it anymore, it's always good to have a few stashed away.
I agree. I might stash too much stuff though. Haha
Ernst, their organizers are amazing. Snap on rebrands Ernst organizers.
Ernst does make great products. Also made in the USA. I’ve tried about all the Ernst products except their plier organizer. If these gearwrench fail me which they probably will, I’ll check out Ernst.
I worked for Tommy and have seen all his versions. Thousands of cases of them over the time I was there.
Excuse my ignorance but who is Tommy?
@@TwoTurtlesAndAWrench Sorry, Tommy prior to retiring was the owner of Tommy’s Hi Tech in Denton Texas. It was the last shop I wrote service for prior to retiring myself. He had several containers in a row behind the shop that he ran his Plyworks business out of. He was a generous great guy to work for.
@@deanhockenberry9268 I gotcha. Makes sense now. Thanks for the info
“Is this car leaking oil??” “No it’s my ratchet”
😂
For those Engineer pliers, they have a green nose cap made specifically for that model for just over $4 before tax on Amazon. It fits perfectly and keeps them closed.
Awesome! Thank you!!
All of my ratchets get a blend of moly grease and pb blaster(especially fap-off) then slap an extension in a drill and use it to spin the rachet at mach jesus in both directions for a bit ..super smooth
I use a drill to break in the lube too. I’ve been thinking about mixing some different lubes but I haven’t tried any yet
I tell you man. Some good Grey moly grease and a tiny bit of pb/wd to thin it down works great
And it gets smoother with time, the moly kind of embeds in the grain structure of the gear/pawls over time
@@canceledczech457 good to know. I’ll have to try it out
