Book Chat With Pat
Добавлен 15 июл 2014
My name is Pat, and I've been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. I'm also a recently retired English teacher, and I loved encouraging my students to be active readers and writers. Books open up new worlds to us, and they teach us about the human condition. Reading, while a solitary act, actually helps us to connect to others.
I love to read both contemporary fiction and the classics in British and American literature, especially. Additionally, I read a lot of poetry and non-fiction, and I have a great interest in psychology and politics. I also really enjoy reading murder mysteries for fun, and I'm just discovering--late to the party, I know--a deep interest in science fiction.

The Christmas Tree Minor Crisis Book Tag
Sipsworth is a great book.
Hey Pat. I also have Emperor of Rome by Mary Beard. Looking forward and slightly scared to read but i plan to read in the summer. Love that you are delving into the Sci-Fi. Great books you shared here!
This is a great book haul Pat! I am very interested to hear your thoughts on children of time!
Those are some interesting poetry books, thank you for sharing your haul.
Welcome to the joy of haul videos! Lillian Boxfish has a great cover. The Rilke looks love, too. What a nice range of reading you have on deck!
Nice haul. I like the idea of reading books about older people. Especially those who find a new lease on life
I marked a few to my 'Wish List', especially the ones concerning older age (going on 79 yo, how did that happen!). We have a book club at least the past 15 years, so we are all getting up there. I will pass those recommendations along! Thanks!
I thoroughly enjoyed Lillian Boxfish Takes A Walk.
I have that Mary Beard book, The Emporer of Rome book, looks daunting but i do enjoy her work.
Children of Time is excellent. I hope your not squeamish about 🕷️🕸️🕷️.
Plenty there to keep you out of mischief Pat! Best wishes and happy reading.
So many great books. I read SPQR a couple of years ago and it's great.
I had a mouse in my house for quite some time and actually missed it when it finally departed so I have to read Sipsworth. It didn’t give me a reason to live but it gave me a reason to disinfect my windowsillls every morning. erghhh!
Great selection! I love it. Thanks for playing along. ❤
@@insearchofwonder hi Anne! Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for getting this started!
Children of Time sounds very interesting!
@@jimmymoore1488 hi Jim. I’ve heard only great things about it! I’m looking forward to it.
Oh, how I would have loved to be in your class!
@@literarylove123 I would have love that too! 🥰
Congratulations on the new acquisitions. Sara Teasdale is a favorite of mine. I hope you enjoy her work.
@@eriebeverly Thank you! I’ve loved everything of hers that I’ve read so far! Hope you’re doing well…
Oh my son just gave my husband the first books of Children of Time books and he has not been able to put it down.
@@TheLibraryMouseGina oh that’s great to know! Thanks, Gina!
I read Lillian Boxfish quite some time ago and enjoyed it. If you've not already, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and its companian The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessey by Rachel Joyce were also great. And of course A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman if you've not already read that one!
Thanks. Yes, I’ve read A Man Called Ove but not the Rachel Joyce books. Thanks for the recommendations. 😊
Sipsworth was one of my favorite books of 2024! I hope you share your thoughts when you do read it!
@@Amanda_Stamos oh I will!
Good to see you this morning! The book covers of Emperor of Rome and A History of Ancient Rome are beautiful. I did not know there was a Rome themed event. Now perhaps this is why Steve Donoghue posted in his substack about rereading Roman Blood by Steven Saylor which is a series based in ancient Rome. I would really like to start reading some poetry. I used to read some contemporary poems when I was younger and tried my hand at writing some (ugh). Be well
@@marciajohansson769 in addition to Historathon, Robert G Reader of Events has proposed a year-long event on reading about Roman emperors. I’m sure you are a fine poet! 🥰
I have Sipswoth in my teetering TBR pile, will hopefully get round to it soon. Glad you’ve got some new poetry books to look forward to😊
@@Ali-AvidReader so many great new books! I hope you’re doing well! 🥰
Good book haul.
@@JessBookgirlTV thank you, Jess.
I'll be very interested in hearing what you think of "Sipsworth" - that one has captured my attention and I'll probably read it at some point. That's quite a book haul - you have some "chunkers" there! Happy reading!
@@BeyondBooks-wt5il hi Reney. I think Sipsworth might be a quick read, unlike some of these other mammoths! 😳
Sipsworth is on my tbr pile!😊
It does sound wonderful, doesn't it?
Very evocative poem, and you recite very well! Thank you for sharing. But apparently, I don't have a mind of winter. And I'm just fine with that. 😁 Have a good one!
Thanks, Bryan. You made me laugh!
Lovely gifts and choices by you! Congratulations on your first book haul video 😄 They’re fun! I hope you enjoy them all and that you find some new poems or poets to enjoy.
@@ellenmadebookclub thank you, Ellen! It’s quite a diverse batch, which I like.
Thank you again for another lovely selection of poems. I enjoyed the faster and livelier way you read these...less deliberate and pedantic. Wonderful!
@@agathayo7344 thanks.
So great to see Children of Time in the video. It has a satisfying conclusion without having to read the other two books if you don't fancy them.
@@bookssongsandothermagic I’m really looking forward to it!
What a fabulous haul and I love the range of genres. I read SPQR last year and thought it was a great grounding for Roman history. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love the poetry collections and I too have been intrigued by Adrian Tchaikovsky because so many BookTube friends rave about his work. Great video Pat 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff thanks, Debs. I thought I remembered that you had read Mary Beard last year. It made sense to me to read the foundational one first. 😊
Dear Pat I love your content and thank you for wonderful recommendations 🤗
@@NeetuSingh-eo4iu thank you for this lovely comment!

Sipsworth is a sweet and lovely book. Being in my early seventies, I enjoyed reading that joyful things can yet be ahead.🐭

Children of Time sounds phenomenal ! 😮
@@BookBuds it’s supposed to be great!
I added Sipsworth to my list. The reviews were so positive-declared it uplifting-and had quite a few 5 star reviews…I’m in. Great diverse haul!❤️
@@vickicoleman2474 it does sound very sweet! ❤️
A diverse and fun haul. I'm really excited to read with you!
@@arockinsamsara I am too, Lekden!
Glad to see history first haha. I don't really read poetry but the title Loon in Late November Water might have me sold just on that. Great vid Pat
@@TriumphalReads my brother reads almost exclusively history, so he was thrilled that I wanted to read these two. I actually read quite a few “nature poets” that you might enjoy, but Loon in Late November Water was a totally new discovery for me. Thanks, Justin!
Great video!!❤ Speaking of being scared, I have been scared to try any James Joyce for decades!😂 I did love Les Misérables and I also love Victor Hugo's poetry! I may have to consider myself tagged because these are just such great questions!! Wishing you success in your self-care journey!!❤
Hi Dawn. Definitely consider yourself tagged!
I read the bilingual edition of Rilke’s Duino Elegies last month (the Edward Snow translation). I don’t read German either, but there was something satisfyingly pleasant about having the original text on each verso page as I made my way through the book. 😊
I am really enjoying your channel. Thank you
@@patriciah8579 that’s how I feel too! 🥰
@@roseannkowitz2652 thank you so much!
Happy new year 🎊 I got Children of Time for Christmas also and I am reading SPQR for historathan too! 🤗
@@ingridfitz5677 oh how wonderful!!
Of course my mind immediately went to Robert Frost. That also was a lovely poem, The Snowman.
Truthfully, my mind also went to Frost first. I went to college and graduate school in Vermont, and Robert Frost was a big part of the graduate school. The college now owns Frost's farmhouse, and his poetry was just a huge part of my studies for many years. But I have read a lot of Frost on the channel, and I don't think I had read Wallace Stevens yet, so I thought that this was a good opportunity to bring him in with this most famous poem.
Love this! 🫶🏽
Please consider yourself tagged, Mariandrea, if you want to jump in on this. But no pressure ever.
These are all great selections!
Thank you, my lovely friend.
Hi Pat, I share with you a love of Agatha Christie for comfort. If I can find a book, we both haven’t read. I would love to buddy read it with you this year. This was a great tag and I hope I’ll be able to do it soon. Self-care is also my goal. Aloha dear friend.
I'd love to do a buddy read with you, Marilyn! That would be a joy! Take care, my friend!
I've been enjoying this tag today due to the snow theme haha, greay pick Pat!
Thanks, Justin. This was such fun. I'd never seen a poetry pop-up before. I really enjoyed all the snowy poems too.
I just discovered your channel and this is my favorite thing a booktuber has ever done! I just binge-watched the whole series and loved every one. I hope you are able and willing to keep this up. After watching booktube for several years, it is so nice to have books presented in this fashion. Thanks!
Thank you for this lovely comment, and I really appreciate that you're here. I'm glad that you are enjoying this series. I taught for almost 40 years, so I guess I have a few more books to talk about in these episodes. I've enjoyed putting them together too. Thank you so much for your kindness, which certainly encourages me to keep going with the series.
