This is a channel completely dedicated to me learning and understanding filmmaking, filmmaking techniques, and playing with cameras (film and digital...possibly new and old but will mostly be old). May have sprinkles of tech stuff as I love that stuff also. If it matters to you I mainly use my Olympus em1 mark III, Olympus em1 mark II, Canon 5D mark ii, or my iPhone 8+. I may write a few essays about how I romanticize film cameras, film history, or just opinion pieces and nonsense that comes out of my head (assuming time permits). I hope to make more short films and ad pieces in the next year and if i really like them, i'll post it on here. If i don't like them maybe i'll still post it up here and explain why i hate it. I have another channel that has turned into something that just shows off my work pieces. I'd like this to not be that.

The AF is freaking amazing compared to the G9 MKi
@@chillbro8811 part of me wants one but I do want the benefits of the GH6. May consider grabbing a Gh7 in the future since it has all the features of both cameras with the added benefit of having a CF express type B
Just picked it up,only wildlife photos I'll be taking are humans 😂
totally don’t understand what you are doing on the camera and totally not understand what is the difference between cards, the worst camera testing i ever seen.
Literally an SD Card speed test. Not sure how much clearer I can make it. Funniest comment ever commented! Thanks for making my day!
Cool video man! I bought this lens a couple years ago. Love it.
Oh man! Totally underrated lens!!! Been meaning to review it!
do you have this facility on EM5 and EM5 Mark ii?
Hey thanks for watching! I unfortunately do NOT have an EM5 or EM5 II. But if I can find a great deal on one I may try and do some content on one!
Its crazy to think to this day the arri alexa is still not 4k, which is fine, Alien Romulus looked great lol. As great as i think digital is and the opportunities it provides, to this day nothing quite does it for me like super 35 film form factor. My favorite movies of the past year with my favorite images, Trap, Cuckoo, and Anora, all shot on super35, it really is a perfected format. Trap and Anora has low light scenes that made me think while watching it was digital and i thought, "wow, this looks great for digital" but sure enough it was film. Im still waiting for a digital film to have that same texture i like that i only see in film. Not that digital needs to, it has its own distinguished look which is great, but film uniquely speaks to me, and while its technically possible for digital to exactly replicate film, its clearly very difficult to do it right because ive yet to see it. Great video as always, love this topic, great images and films can come from all form factors
Dude YES! There's something inert with film. Something that's not easily describable honestly. Even how the images are MADE is completely different. It's purely a chemical reaction as opposed to an electronic data. The moment that is captured in film shares the exact light and air of that very moment which digital will NEVER be able to copy. As ridiculous as that sounds that's the biggest reason some people are still able to really tell the difference between film and digital.
Well hello!
Amazing, thank you a lot!❤❤❤
Brother do you have any tips on how to minimize the jello effect when vlogging with this camera? I'm using it with the olympus 12mm f2 and on both IS settings, there's this weird warping jello effect when i walk. With sensor shift+digital, it's way more noticeable and i even see it on clips just holding the camera at a dinner table. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey @HeroVange sorry for the late reply I don't monitor my YT as diligently as I should! With the E-M1 Mark II and Mark III there's nothing you can really do about it. The newest update is actually really terrible from what I remember (I'm primarily a GH6 and Sony A9 shooter now) The ONLY thing I can say is the once of the older firmwares actually a bit better regarding the IBIS. One thing I do have to ask though is you're stating it's also visible on the dinner table? IF it's warping EVEN when you're still THAT is a possible problem with the IBIS itself! Sorry I couldn't be of better assistance!
I didn't know we were skating out in these streets! Lets gooo!
Heck yea! Come skate with me one of these days!
Why associate a hybrid photo camera with filmmaking? If equipment truly matters, why not use a ‘real’ cinema camera instead of debating the sensor? And if equipment isn’t important, why does it matter if people associate a full-frame sensor with being ‘cinematic’? Your argument seems like a moot point.
My statement was simply none of that matters as much as everything around the camera. Use anything because everything else is what makes it "cinematic" not the camera.
@@AlpacoFilms The title of the video claims that “full frame is not cinematic.” If that’s true, then what exactly is considered cinematic? A full frame sensor can produce cinematic images just as well as Super 8mm, Super 16mm, Super 35mm, Super 65mm, IMAX, MFT, and other formats. Equipment is as important as skill, non is more than the other.
Exactly. You're literally just strengthening my statement. There's movies made with all types of sensor and film sizes. None of of those sizes mattered. Cinematic is the everything combined to create the story. Not sure why you're trying to argue with me here. We seem to see the same thing. I have a GH6 and an FX3. They serve different purposes. No, cropping the FX3 doesn't work out well it degrades the footage too much. That's where the GH6 works best as I have S16 vintage lenses I like using. But yea my statement isn't against full frame. Its simply stating it's not the end all be all that every RUclipsr that doesn't even work in the industry think it is. It's fantastic looking but so is every other frame size and dimension depending on the story and how you make it.
@@AlpacoFilms I’m not arguing, just pointing out the fallacy in your statement. You claim “Full frame is NOT Cinematic,” yet also say that equipment is unimportant and any sensor can achieve a cinematic look. This contradicts your initial statement. If any sensor can be cinematic, that includes full frame. Therefore, your argument seems to be against the importance of equipment, not specifically full frame.
@ yea the title of the video is just the title. Made to grab the attention to click. But if you watch it I clearly state that the equipment outside of the camera has a much more important aspect of bringing the look to a scene. The direction and acting is much more important to bring the emotional part of the story. I am simply arguing cameras do not mean nearly as much as RUclips makes it out to be. There's clearly a lack of writers in the camera world when that is clearly the backbone of cinema. This is of course because I consider myself a writer first and hate how writers are treated in the world of filmmaking.
I bought the 150-600 as soon as I could. My advice for anyone considering it is, buy it and don’t look back. It works great. RUclipsr Thomas Eisel has a good video discussing it.
He definitely has a great video. Still highway robbery taking another company's item, redressing, updating firmware for it, and charging $1000 more than the company that made it.
I did the 1.7 update. The trash can now work as the Menu button in addition to the original Menu button. It was a good change.
That's awesome!
XA just brilliant and mjiu iii.. taken amazing photos with the XA
It truly is!
why cant i change the upper limit for the auto mode photo ? my photos are being ruined because my olympus will often shoot in 6400 iso in broad daylight when its not necessary, i dont get it and i never found how to change it my photos look compressed
That is frustrating. I'm not really sure why they limited that function but there's no way to go beyond that in auto iso. Quick question though, are you trying to shoot at higher ISO in daylight? or is your camera randomly choosing 6400 iso in broad daylight but you want to shoot at a lower ISO?
@@AlpacoFilms yes my camera randomly chooses 6400 iso when it gets a bit less lightly, like often it won't go lower it just sets it to max iso idk why. i'd like to shoot on lower iso, for now i try to shoot on P mode as i can't seem to change iso at all in auto mode.... but i like auto mode otherwise so yes it is frustrating :(
Cell Phones are so sharp these days, but I use my old photo gear to get me out of the house. Early morning walk / hike in nature. Meeting folks. The hobby is free once you buy a kit. Plus it keeps your brain sharp fiddling with the settings and finding a good composition. 💁🏻♀️
Yea, I HAVE to carry a camera everyday. It really is therapeutic as well!
Hi, does Prores Raw on OM1 comparable to the Bmpcc4k in terms of dynamic range and sharpness
In terms of dynamic range yes. Sharpness NO. OM1 Prores RAW is line skipped and that definitely effects the image quality.
@@AlpacoFilms Thanks for your statement. It surely helps.
iPhone camera just looks not natural,i want to got a pocket camera and a dumb phone to leave from smartphone addiction
yea for sure! I prefer having a camera as well. Regarding the phone footage itself there's apps that soften the footage up and actually the newer iphones have even better dynamic range so they can actually look a lot better than my phone footage.
Hi thanks for your input. I would say to anyone interested in film production understand their task . Photography is also something I would say understand the task . Now for those who want the best of both worlds I have a simple solution. Buy a lens for your mobile phone and try out filming or photography using the smart phone you have. The quality on a smart phone really is of a good enough quality to make a movie with had a startling learning platform . Then if film is your thing you will know that . I use my z8 for filming I put a few blogs on you tube just for friends . Jumping into anything with both feet is never a good idea.Any equipment is not cheap and the myth is if I had the best stuff going I could make great stuff. Experience is the key to better productions. There is a saying every picture tells a story. In truth that is the aim of capturing images to share and idea or story. I am not talking about a drunk in a bar , I am talking about interesting stories. The best way to tell a story or share an idea is to have an interesting subject or something relevant . This I feel remains not fully understood when thinking of learning filming .the idea off making a movie requires a subject.quality of the image is no match for content from an image .Once you record or photograph an image it needs content that holds the attention of the viewer. You can buy all the equipment you feel you need with out an interactive interesting content even the best presentation falls flat. A phone is a great way 0:02 0:02 to test the water and make affordable images that can be deleted without loss of great expense. Thanks for reading this .i know this by experience of wasting a lot of money on gear I did not really need. The saying you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink . You can have all the camera gear in the world but if you’re not creative then it will be a burned not an asset.
a bit question is , do it use adapter and about AF is it slow reduce or infinity distance gone , i really hope for u answer
Infinity is not gone since there's no other element in the adapter. But AF is very slow and sometimes does not hit focus depending on the camera. Just to note. Only Single AF will work and NOT continous AF.
thanks for taking the time to give such a thoughtful review
You're welcome! I'm glad it is worth watching!
is iPhone 15 selfie wider or this canon v10? I just mostly do family selfies and wondering which is wider angle
The actual selfie camera is not as wide as the wide camera on the back of the phone. If you have an Apple Watch you can see and control your camera that way. Doing this will allow you to take a better photo using the better camera sensor and lens combo vs the selfie camera and lens. But the selfie one isn't too bad on the 15 so that's up to you. I'd test and play with it.
A modern digital XA would be dope! I love my Olympus XA! I’ve subbed to your channel cuz we’re Olympus bros and I'm trying to immerse my feed in fellow film people. Can't wait to see what you shoot! If you got a minute, check out the pics I got in my Olympus XA POV Photo Walk video I just posted where I shoot some fuji 400 in mine.
Heck yea! Thanks dude!
Cheers for the tips, I have owned the EM1 Mk2 for a few years and it's still doing a great job for video. I tend to use HD SF at 60fps and then upscale it to 4k. I have used C4k and 4k and it produces superb quality. Thanks again 👍🏻
I'm happy you find it useful! Thank you for watching!
Can the OM-1 record the Natural or Flat profile externally to Ninja V in 10bit 422? Or is it 8 bit 420 wrapped in a 10bit 422 container?
Sorry for the late reply! I don't go on YT as much anymore! Regarding using the Ninja V with the OM-1. It is still only 8-bit 422 like the E-M1 Mark II, E-M1 Mark III, and E-M1X. So it'll only be 8-bit in a 10bit container. However it IS 422 instead of 420. But that's not something that you notice very much. I've ran several tests while I had the OM-1. I was going to do a video regarding that but I've taken on a lot more jobs over the last couple years and I've slacked a bit here.
@@AlpacoFilms Ya I was hoping that the ninja could alleviate the restrictions OM has place on the video recording. They didn’t make any improvements in this regard with the mark ii version. Its a shame because with a few software tweaks this camera could be pretty solid for video.
@@MattParson which I don't understand why they wouldn't just do it. This could've easily beat the G9ii in every category if it just added everything the GH5ii had for video. It actually does raw in 444 not just 422. So it's closer to quality in cinema cameras in the $10,000 range. My FX3 and FX6 doesn't even do that. It had more DR in raw than my GH5s in raw. However it was line skipper and disgustingly noticeable.
I was let down by the design of OM-1. Its the same issue with metabones. Would be great of a company made a speedbooster design for OM-1 body but there probably isn’t enough demand.
Yea, that's the most irritating issue to me. The Panasonic cameras have ALL had AF working with the Metabones and other Speedboosters. Now that they have Hybrid AF the Autofocus works as well and sometimes better than RF Canon mount cameras with EF lenses. I think this has a lot to do with it not being JUST a hybrid but years of them using DFD that it just works well now. Hell, my buddy got the G9II and it really is the stickiest camera I've ever played with. More so than the OM-1 when I had it, however, I had it early on so I'm not sure how the experience is with that camera and the most recent firmware. I can say though is the G9ii works well even WITH EF lenses as that's what my buddy was using. He didn't even use a Canon EF lens. He was using a Sigma 50-100 f1.8 and it was pretty good with that old hunk of glass!
@@AlpacoFilms I use the metabones on my Oly Pen F and it gets the job done for taking photos with my Canon mount lenses. A Pen F with modern feature set would be great but I doubt OM would make it because they’ve gone all in on Wildlife photo market. But we’ll have to wait and see
@@MattParson they have and completely dismissed their whole thing about honoring Maitani. The M in OM is now meaningless.
the more I work, the more I realize the only things that matter is flexibility in post (RAW or 4444 recording) and dynamic range. Color is also important, but if you have uncompressed footage you can tweak it to where you need it. Almost every professional camera on the market today has the resolution and format requirements to make a great film. 12-bit RAW is very useful for VFX as the extra color information can be used to pull cleaner keys, but besides that almost anything works fine. Super16 is also an excellent format. Look at fruitvale station, Black Swan, and many of the classic indie films of the 90s for examples of how incredible that format can be.
Completely agree, I LOVE LOVE Super 16, I use a clip of Fruitvale Station in my video around the 1:15 mark. I actually own a bolex reflex H16 myself and I still obsess over the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera as that was my favorite Cinema camera I've ever owned even to date (even after having to deal with 5 of them as they were not very reliable cameras). I typically don't even shoot 10-bit for clients anymore. Most can't tell the difference since it resides on Social Media anyway so no VFX needed. There's films shot on 8-bit Canon C100's that still look amazing today. So much so that I'm itching to buy one for a film I'm shooting later this year. But I'll probably end up using the GH6 instead as MFT is the closest to a modern S16 I'll get. Not to mention the features really do make it a HECK of a lot easier to shoot a movie. Thanks again for watching and sorry for the late reply, I don't really do YT anymore. Might consider picking it up again sometime but unsure of that decision as of yet.
A couple of years ago I got a BMPCC4k so that I could record outstanding raw video with my Zuiko lenses.
I love the Blackmagic cameras! I would have gone that route if I didn't need to take photos. But, NOW I actually have the GH6 as it's basically everything I want out of the BMPCC4k which the addition of a more compact and functional body, Opengate (which is my primary recording preference for work as we shoot for Social Media a lot), a purely photo mode, and also the fact that it's build like a TANK! Seriously, I've dropped it on rocks at the side of a steep ridge and it's completely fine.
Could you briefly explain your prores raw workflow for post production? I imported the footage in Final Cut and they offer no OM-Log conversion from prores, so i'm kinda lost, also i could find nothing about it anywhere on the internet! Thanks a lot
Sorry for the late reply, I don't go on RUclips as often anymore. But, since it's RAW, you can literally use ANY of the RAW conversions. Or do what I do, I made my own LUT in FCPX (or whichever NLE you're using) I made one for 5500K, 4000K, 3000, and 2500K white balances so I have all the ranges. BUT since it's RAW, you can change the white balance in FCPX very easily. With RAW, the world is your oyster...or however the saying goes.
You are absolutely right in your last statement that everything outside the camera is what makes a scene cinematic. I have a Fujifilm XH2s (APSC, crop sensor). With the right lighting, composition, the built-in "Eterna" color grade and, most importantly, a good story, one can get very good results in achieving their cinematic quest. I have also found the older vintage lenses adapted (manual aperture and focus, no internal chip) to this camera give very good nostalgic "cinema" look and feel compared to the newer, clinically sharp glass (which do have their place, admittedly). For example, I like the look the Nikon 24mm F2.8 renders in the HX2s in some instances. I learned about this class of lens from Vuhlandes ruclips.net/video/jV_kfPW6COY/видео.html
I love a lot of vintage lenses, but some have grown to some ridiculous prices! I also really love the cheaper chinese manual focus lenses as they use a lot of the same chemical formula as the vintage lenses. But you have the advantage of having lenses that are closer designed for your size sensors and some are cheaper than the vintage lenses. For example I know TTArtisans lenses uses similar techniques as the knock off Canon FD lenses (Brand name is Five Star) which I actually love more than the FD lenses and some of the FD lenses were used in Cinema Glass.
the website is down?
Well dang, I guess good things come to an end...I don't own or run the site. It was ran by someone else of their own time and money.
Is there a way to increase the auto max iso above 6400 for photography (not video) when the camera can manually exceed this limit? Thanks
Hey David, as far as I know. 6400 is the MAX limit for Auto even in photos. Not sure why to be quite honest. But I'm only speaking for the E-M1 Mark II. I no longer have the Mark III. However, I do not see that this would be different for the Mark III as the firmware updates weren't nearly as great as the Mark II was.
I know it’s an old video, but the proliferation of camera snobs in 2024, is wild..🤮 They truly believe specs and technicals, matter more than story! Besides, nowadays a skilled editor, colorist and vfx dude could match the “look” of most Hollywood cinematic films..🤦 Even if shot on a Potato500V!!😂🤦 Jokes aside, just sick of this crap. Whatever you got, just shoot!! 💯💪📲🎥📷📸📹
It's strange isn't it? The BTS videos outperform the actual short films/features? And when you see these technical "filmmakers" "films" they're poorly written, horribly paced, and have nothing to say or add. It's incredible to me that it's what's passing for "films" now. It's illiteracy in storytelling.
I'm loving mine! I actually bought that cover immediately and I find it addicting to play with! Great video!
Thanks for the info, worked on a really ancient e-pl2!
No problem! And hey we are E-P siblings! My daily carry is a E-P3
@@AlpacoFilms Nice! Love how these older cameras are still so much fun to use.
@@steve5746 right! And in a lot of ways the older look and colors are so rich and characteristic! The newer cameras seem to follow more of Sony's path of a clinical look.
i can't access lightsnowdev, is it down?
I agree with CC-w7zo and I believe your knowledge of camera's is quite a bit off track...the camera's you mention do not even begin to compare to the OM-5. The OM-5 is so far advanced in every way to those Canon's. I have an R7 and an RP. It's a fact that they are selling very well to new OM users. BTW the OM5 body is a magnesium alloy frame in a glass-reinforced polycarbonate outer shell, a material all my accessories and battery grips are made of. It is far tougher/ resilient than metal alloy shells. Anyone who handles one will immediately notice it is very well built.
Totally respect your views on this camera. I made this last year so a lot of it doesn't apply anymore. Especially now that the camera is easily purchased at a lower price with sales they throw throughout the year. I still experience the same things in real life practices. Most people don't actually use the features. But my opinion of the OM-5 has definitely changed. Here in Florida, it is still not very high selling. Again I do marketing for several camera stores and they simply do not sell OM-5 as well as other cameras. Great for OM for selling well in other countries though! Regarding the body, I've not heard of the frame being made of magnesium. I'll have to contact my rep I work with at OM to get that detail. But I'm more than sure it's the same template as the previous E-M5 which is not made of magnesium at all. I definitely do not agree with your sentiment about plastics/polycarbonate being tougher than metals. I've experience a lot of drops from high places (rock climbing, hikes, and bouldering) with both materials and my Olympus e-m1 mark II and lasted years of abuse. If that sentiment were true, the OM-1 would be made of Polycarbonate as well. But it's not.
You either, have been misinformed or wildly guessing at the specification of the OM-5 assembly. There is no sub-frame to speak of, let alone a magnesium alloy one. The internal components are modular and are affixed to the main shell (camera body) with small alloy and plastic brackets. The body shell is precision moulded and identical to the previous model with one variation; added material to the tripod socket anchor. The body shell is a high quality plastic but certainly not glass filled, which is would create significant problems with precision moulding and have no tangible benefit whatsoever. The plastic shell does have a premium feel however, reduces some weight overall and reduces production costs. It is completely fit for purpose and very strong but ultimately less robust than alloy variants.
I like the camera you’re using!
It's a great camera! I just went through a few problems with it but I've heard a lot of people not experiencing the same problems I am!
My E-M1 Mark III plays back the in-camera footage, but I cannot get either Prores 422 or Prores RAW to record. I updated the Ninja V to 11.04.02. I also tried to do a record to Prores 422 into the Ninja Inferno (7", running OS 8.5), but could not record to that either. The E-M1 Mark III is on FW 1.6. FW 1.4 was supposed to address recording to an external monitor. Tried as many settings as I could find. Camera screen blacks out. The "OK" button will start and stop the playback. But no success getting a Prores recording into either Atomos recorders. So, if you cannot trigger from the camera, how does one start the recording?
Forgive me if some of this is wrong. I'm working only through memory and I no longer have E-M1 Mark III and OM-1 to test. From what i remember with ProRes RAW, you can't trigger recording on the camera at all. You can ONLY record by hitting the record button on the Ninja V. Regarding recording, have you tried this? ruclips.net/video/Kf7uRBJbvHQ/видео.htmlsi=DwW1-3U22EdaJ0_c&t=46
So which internal 4K is not line skipped when comparing the OM-1 with the EM1 Mark III and EM1 Mark II?
I think all the Olympus/OM cameras video is line skipped. I didn't actually realize this until recently (i guess months ago at this point) though. I don't have that much of a problem with it for online content creating it's more than fine. It's just something to note. I realized this when I was able to play with my buddies OG GH5 and even at the lowest codec the video was more detailed overall looked better. But again, not enough to make that big of deal for online content!
This gets so hot under the battery only 10 minutes in.
Yea it really does, but it isn't any hotter than any other external monitors I have so I just assumed this was normal.
The reason we are all obsessed with blurry backgrounds is because shooting on film was so cost prohibited and all we had were camcorders with tiny sensors. So that shallow depth of feils was a bit of a unicorn to us. Then along cane the 5D markii and we all of a sudden had a camera that could do that. The problem is, that we programmed ourselves to think blurry backgrounds are cinematic so having an image with less background blur make the image less cinematic. But we ignored the 100+ years of cinema that we were trying to replicate, which didn't utilize deptg of feils the way we do. This is the power of echo chambers. Focus on lighting and composition. I think we all need to pick up those cruddy camcorders again and relearn how we made inage look good without the shallow depth of field
Exactly! I couldn't of said it better.
Thank you for making this - I’m not really into FF
Thanks, dude. It really shouldn't be about the size of the sensor. It's everything around it that makes the film. Without a good story, good lighting, and dedicated actors/actresses and production. The film will suffer. No matter the size of the sensor.
Thank you for you comments, itseasy to relay on the dynamic range and depth of field of Full frrame, personaly unless you have a focus puller that can work with FF its kind of pointless. Furthermore as you have indicated if the lighting isn't considered then it doesn't matter frankly what you shoot on. Even an Imax camera for instance shot against a white background is still a white background regardless. Cameras made today aren't the problem its the application of production values that creates the image. @@AlpacoFilms
@@stevenwyatt1670 exactly! Its good to hear from others about stuff like this! It gets lost in all the fluff and marketing!
I love how you say "Super-35" over a shot from Joker which wad shot on Arri Alexa-65 with sensor-size approaching medium format photography.
I thought about editing it when I made it but the whole point wasn't against Full Frame. The point is none of that matters, sensor size doesn't dictate if something is cinematic.
@AlpacoFilms i consider little things like this to be Easter Eggs rather than mistakes. Just to test if we're listening.
Same regurgitated and misinformed content…
Yea I get it, I posted this video hours after the rumor posted. Yea it's based on the sport model. Doesn't change the fact it's a full frame lenses that cost nearly a $1000 more than the sigma version. If they needed someone to write the code for it work with dual stab, give me the base code of the lens and I bet I could figure it out.
This is GOLD. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Here's the big question: who developed the firmware? If Sigma did it, yeah, they could technically (though probably not legally, due to contracts) remount an existing 150-600 lens for M43. But if they didn't -- if OMDS developed the software -- then there's no value in that remount. It doesn't work on your camera. Why would I assume that OMDS did the software work (or, equally problematic, Sigma was contracted to develop the software and it's owned by OMDS)? Two things. One is that, since Sigma didn't make an M43 version, OMDS would actually have to enlist them as an OEM for the lens, and in return for that money, OMDS owns the lens. It's like when Sony makes a custom version of a sensor for Olympus/OMDS... not of the Panasonics could the Olympus sensors, even though both camera from Sony. The other is that sync IBIS is only ever an Olympus thing (or for Panasonic lenses, a Panasonic thing), which is annoying in M43. But basically, OMDS wouldn't have given Sigma the sync IBIS code except under NDA. And given all the software stuff that's happened for the OM-1.2, it's pretty clear OMDS has their software team working well. So at least I'd bet it's OMDS and Sigma working together. The other annoying thing about this is that paid collaboration. We've seen this before in tech. When Microsoft decided to launch their Windows Phone OS, no major developers were interested in supporting that system. Microsoft well understood that you can't be a major smartphone platform without major company apps on it: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. I don't know big their net was... but they paid a bunch of companies to develop apps. Those companies, looking at the non-existent market, got paid assuming Microsoft's payment was all the money they'd ever make on the port. So they didn't even offer much in the way of updates, as they'd wait for Microsoft to pay. So that's what we have here. Sigma actually did the right thing with M43: they made real M43 lenses, but it wasn't a big market for them because they do FF and APS-C designs for pretty much every other company, not just Olympus and Panasonic. Plus, because M43 had two "first party" or really primary lens makers, and they weren't overpriced -- at least back then -- Sigma had less they could do. They weren't going to try to sell a FF lens as M43 (or APS-C) because that delivers a lower image quality than they same optical formula rejiggered for M43/APS-C. So while I'm expecting Sigma to make more M43 lenses, the fact they get paid by OMDS to do that pretty much ensure they wouldn't get all that interested even if M43 got really popular again. They'll just wait for the cash up front and profitable product orders, no need to ever put out that product into an uncertain market on their own.
This is so true! Thanks for sharing!
If the OM-1 II had a dial instead of a D-pad, I would have two already. Why do manufacturers not want to make digital cameras with one dial each for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO? Anyway, mine is just a silly camera complaint compared to what you’re going through. Stay strong and take breaks! I am pulling for you, way over here in Japan!
Thank you! I really appreciate this!
Well, the OM-1mk2 brought you at least half of your wishes. I wanted some new video features too,but as you say,we need a OM-2 that implements the video functions. I dont believe in 120 frames C-AF. It will need double processors. And it will give heat. But who knows, if they make it like 1 cm higher, its space for processor double ram memory compared to Mark2 and coolong without fan. I could accept the size and weight increase. And why not all that in that battery and processor grip as you talk about. Conclusion. The only thing I lack in the mark2 is new video functions. So, what will we accept to take away to make OM-1 into same size OM-2 video centric?
I worry about OM systems resources as a company to innovate now that they aren't part of Olympus. I suspect that I'll be buying a Panasonic G9ii next.
I'd recommend the G9ii. It's cheaper and has all the main features for most photographers. Plus, I don't see Panasonic going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
You my life saver 0:30 I got stuck on flat mode (video) and couldn't figure out how to switch it off on video mode to use photo modes when video-recording. Bless you :))))
You're very welcome!
