Cover crop basics- Field peas
Просмотров 220Месяц назад
I decided to plant field peas in my fall garden bed over the summer to suppress weeds, improve the soil's structure and nutritional quality. Nothing could be simpler and we'll get some good eating out of the deal as well! #floridagardening #plantingplants #droughttolerantplants #summercrop #fieldpeas #floridahomestead #summergardening #nitrogenfixation
Pollinator garden update ...
Просмотров 13Месяц назад
it's been a little over two months since we sowed The wildflower and pollinator plant seeds. we're starting to get some good color now. Acouple days of rain was likely helpful with that, we've been in a horrible drought for weeks. I made a good in assuming that Tick Trefoil were classified with the Tickseed family, please forgive. All in all now I'm very excited and very happy with what we are ...

First bloom for our Pineapple Guava! *(Feijoa sellowiana)

Feijoa sellowiana is not a Guava at all but it's so similar the name is permanently stuck. It's said to taste similar to pineapple 🍍.. hence the name! I've waited 3.5 years for this and so excited to sample the fruit! if you'd like one for yourself Go see my favorite Nursery Person Jené at www.jenestropicals.com #floridagardening #floridahomestead #guava #fruittrees

I've lost large banana trees in the past due to winds or just the weight of ripening fruit..I devised this simple set-up to prevent that. Total cost was $10 and being pressure treated lumber, they will last several seasons. #bananatree #floridagardening #organicgardening #florida #homestead

    Thanks for the tip. With summer coming on strong I have considered getting some of these. At least for the deciduous trees I planted. The ol' 5 gallon pail with a small hole drilled on the side may have to suffice for the Green Giant Arbs I planted. Quite a long hedgerow of them so I am hoping we don't get too dry here in the NE.

    Will that attract rats and mice to your garden throwing feed on the ground

    • @oldfloridagardener
      @oldfloridagardener 4 месяца назад

      The chickens eat it right up but I'm sure there's enough left over to attract some mice. Doubtful that rats would be interested in a stray piece of grain or two. Gotta remember though this is done before the garden is installed. It's just a plot of dirt at this point. It'd be a couple weeks before anything is planted that rodents could harm.

    Thank you ever so much for sharing your knowledge of pitchforks. This year I created 40 square yards of garden beds (which I had never done before) for my wife, and I have been truly amazed at how wonderful the pitchfork is as a garden tool. We have very clay soil so I have used the pitchfork to break up the ground, shovel it into a wheelbarrow, and then sieve the soil of rocks on a half inch screen. Before replacing the soil I used the pitchfork to break up the ground to the depth of the pitchfork before replacing the screened soil back on the ground. This allows the clay soil to be broken up to at least two pitchfork depths before planting the beds. Once I replaced the soil, I then amended the soil with gypsum, compost, wood chips and a mixture of biochar, hay and rabbit manure at the top, wile tilling the various layers. This was all made so much easier with the pitchfork!

    I too like a longer handle, but it's for the longer reach (less bending) not the leverage. The leverage in this instance gets worse with length because the pivot point is wherever your back hand is and the front hand does the lifting; while the weight being lifted is further away putting the Lifter at a mechanical power disadvantage from the short handle - but that also means you don't have to move your arms as far - so in that respect it's an ADVANTAGE - so long as it's not excessively heavy material.

    hi, how long did you keep the greens in ice water before bagging them . thanx

    • @oldfloridagardener
      @oldfloridagardener Год назад

      It doesn't take long for them to cool down. The purpose of the ice is to just stop the cooking process So I would say if I threw a big colander full of greens in the ice bath and swirl them around a little bit I think maybe 15 to 30 seconds is enough to stop the cooking and get them cold then I put them right in the bag

    I have been on a mission to grow cabbage sprouts from 2 years. I have some good ones growing now. But I cut off my cabbage head too low and I didn’t leave any leaves, but sprouts are growing. I will try again in the fall. I’m in North Alabama, so it’s about to be too hot for them. And I just harvested some really nice broccoli heads Saturday. I knew about the side shoots but I didn’t know about the suckers growing on broccoli! I will be on the lookout for those! Thanks for all this helpful info! Happy gardening to ya!! I’ll be back to your channel for sure!
