  • I saw someone ask in a Facebook gardening group I'm in ask what the term "bolting" means. Her answer was quicky answered by several people but realizing that so many people are just starting out in gardening, I thought I'd make a quick video on what the term bolting or "going to seed" means. simply put bolting is the stage of growth at which a perennial or annual plant shifts gears away from getting larger and creating more leaves, to forming a flower to produce seeds. it's all part of the reproductive cycle of a plant. For plants, it's The BIG Finale! The MAIN EVENT! Everything a plant does up until that point is just in preparation for the bolt. The bolt is characterized by rapid shoot elongation of the reproductive parts of the plant, topped off with a crown of flowers to attract pollinators.. with the end result being the creation of seeds to disperse into the world.
This can be a sad point for us gardeners knowing that the growing season of that particular plant is over but it's just a milestone in the never ending cycle of growth and death that is gardening.
The upside is that you get to take a break for a minute or you're about to put in a new plant for a different crop.
if we Garden purposefully, continuing to care for the plant throughout the seed formation process, we're rewarded with an astounding number of FREE SEEDS to save, replant, trade or make other use of. If you're interested in growing your own microgreens that are so en vogue right now, start tuned, this is helpful information.

Hi from west coast I'm originally from Florida born and raised. I sure miss growing a garden with my Mom in Florida. Such a easier place for gardening. Besides fighting the birds over my strawberry patch lol 😂
