The Belfry from above at St Mary's, Calne
The front 6 of St Mary's from above the belfry.
The room above the bells was the old belfry where the back 8 of the 10 where hung. The oak frame still remains and provides the foundations for the floor of this room, and also allows for a hatch to be installed, controlling how much sound is let out.
Even with just the front 6 ringing, the sway of the tower is felt immensely from up there. I could only imagine the sway with all 10!!

The spiral staircase up to the ringing chamber is quite possibly the best place to listen to the bells! Here is the new front 6 ringing a method of some sort - I'd imagine it is Plain Bob Doubles! The front 6 are glorious to ring and to listen to, but listening to the full peal of 10 in the staircase is something else... What is going on in the belfry?

In light of me co-teach two new members of the Heddington band, I made this video as they were struggling in connecting what happens upstairs when ringing. I go through, testing the bell to see if the bell is down, ringing up, ringing at a steady pace, setting at both strokes and then ringing down. I realise that my technique is not perfect to ART standards, but it is a good demonstration of wh...

Moving the whole belfry down into the clock room and making the old belfry as a sound lantern, has much improved what the bells sound like! The ringing chamber is still a building site - The carpet hasn't been put down and some carpentry work is still left to do! @BellringerBen 2 месяца назад

      It is a little on the flat side. No bell will ever perfectly be in tune because of its partials that make up the nominal of the bell. The partial that your hearing that is slightly flat, is the hum which is the more forthcoming note of a bell's pitch, hence why it sounds slightly flat. Its actual note is more or less at the pitch of C#... just a couple of Hz out.

    Shame that the standard of ringing over the last few years has gone right down. Ringing used to be perfect - and no one was allowed to ring until they could prove they could strike and handle the bells, often by invitation only.

    • @BellringerBen

      This was a youth ringing event... It gives the younger generation of bell ringers a chance to ring at places they wouldn't normally because they are often shut off until a higher level of ringing. Ringing on 10 or 12 can be difficult for some ringers, especially if they are not very experienced. I think everyone who rang at the minster that day did extremely well!

    • @BellringerBen
      @BellringerBen 7 месяцев назад

      I'm not entirely sure what is going on with the 4th. I'll be honest, I don't really notice the 4th stand out too much, but I understand what you mean. The 4th is one of the older bells (cast 1796) and has been turned on multiple occasions, but I believe that they wanted to keep as much character of the back 8 as possible hence why it might sound off. It is "in tune" with the rest of the peal. Maybe its just the acoustics or the bedding in process that was happening in this video that made it sound off!

      Bellringing is fairly niche in the internet world!! However, once you become a bellringer, you start to realise that every church near to you, most likely has a band of bell ringers. Not to mention, lots of teens are getting into bellringing. Each year there is a competition amongst say 1,000 to 2,000 young ringers from across Great Britain who literally take over a city for a day, ringing at the cathedral and neighbouring churches and compete in a striking competition! It is incredible being a young ringer! After all, you get to go places where the public don't often go!!

      Ah, so if you live near a church which rings fairly regularly such as on Sundays, you could go along and say that your interested. They would normally be very happy and supportive if you want to have a go. Another way is through a tower open day, where the band will open up the tower to the public and let them have a go at ringing.

      @@BellringerBen Haven't they improved the acoustics?

    • @BellringerBen
      @BellringerBen Год назад

      @@RingerThomas Yes and no! Moving the bells down the tower has improved the "acoustics" outside, but at a compromise to inside... They added wooden shafted clappers to 9 and 10 so that you can ring them up right without the need of a strapper, but, that has made them incredibly sonorous so, as a result, the sound bounces around the tower! Not only that, but the bells are partially inclosed in a room and, they need to figure out which areas need sound insulation in the void between the false ceiling and the belfry floor.

    I refuse to believe this is the same tower! The difference is stark! They still sound very quirky around the front (2 and 3 here), but unmistakeably Calne. The tenor roars! There will always be a bit of a bedding-in process, with clappers, acoustics, etc. - the carpet will make a lot of difference too - but I very much hope to ring here again before too long, and would be interested to see a video in maybe six months as a comparison. (From your video of the ten, the trebles sound super and match really well - not always the case when an old-fashioned ring is augmented....) I bet the local ringers are thrilled! 😊😊

    • @BellringerBen

      Haha!! Yes believe it or not, this is somehow the same tower! I looked back on your quater peal and I was thinking, "where they really like that?!" I'm so glad that the bells haven't lost all of their characteristics like the quirky front end, especially the 9th with its strange thwack you sometimes get on the handstrokes is still there. The tenor is glorious... It was a lovely tenor before the wooden shafted clapper, but oh wow, it booms through the tower now - Downside to that is, when ringing all 10, you can only just hear the two trebles. The two new trebles do sound lovely... Not too harsh and tinny which as you say, can be the case! Westley Group have done a superb job with them! The band is in awe with them... The locals are glad to have them back and ringing again, they even had a local come up and had a go! Oh by the way, it is now possible to get the tenor up right on your own! Its hard work, stated by the Tower Captain after I arrived with him looking a bit red in the face, but its do-able!!
