    Yuck about the weather there! Here it was my favorite type of weather - lightly rainy and in the 60s for much of the weekend. Both books you finished sound like interesting reads. And glad you're able to take Dusty again - too bad the home didn't work out for him.

      Oh wow! I will try not to envy the weather there, definitely get out and enjoy it for me if you can! We had a slight drop, the previous week, so I did get out to the park almost every night for a walk, but now it's just intolerable out there. So ready for fall to kick in. Dusty will definitely be a joy to have again, but his overgrooming situation has now been resolved it seems, so hopefully they are going be able to get him out at the shelter to meet & greet once they aren't full and he will find a home quick I think.

    Such cute kitten footage, and so many delicious meals. The watermelon salad one especially looked good. The coyote howling was intense! For The Mimicking of Known Successes, I think it's told from Pleiti's perspective because the series is an homage to Sherlock Holmes, which is told from Watson's perspective. I think the writing style really mimicks Holmes novels as well (I wonder if the title is actually a meta joke poking fun at that as well).

    • @ReadBecca
      @ReadBecca День назад

      I think you are completely right, in fact I really need to re-read some Sherlock really. I'm now wondering if Watson just has more of an air of authority, or I was just less credulous when reading a classic.

      That is such a great perspective, it seems like we all gloss over these things that are small but affect us day to day. I can be terrible about not wanting to buy things or be wasteful, so I often wind up stuck in either not having the mental energy to try repairs/never making time, or just not replacing something because I can work around not having it in some way, that usually makes things harder in life in some way. It's tough to find that balance between giving the internal go ahead to just replace things and not make life harder and putting in the effort to at least try possibilities in between.

I have tried to find a balance for myself of both using those trusted sources to find things, but also opening myself up once in awhile to some risk trying to also provide that myself here to others where I can hedge a bit on things I think I will like anyway even if they don't live up entirely. Thankfully I've found that has worked out more often than it has not.

      Absolutely small presses are publishing so much great and innovative work, it's always great finding new ones. As far as Technocapitalism, that's tricky. I definitely will talk about it when I read it in some capacity, there are lots of past books I've rambled quite a bit around the topic, but because of my work I basically can't directly address anything very directly relevant to my actual job area without it being a risk because I work for a stock exchange and basically everything is considered proprietary knowledge, so I have to avoid a lot of what I am most specialized in.

      Ooh thank you, I think Only Connect was on the quiz channel one time but I had no idea what I was so I didn't click, I'll have to try it if I see it again. I've also not heard of Pointless, but I am glad you've mentioned Osman, I totally forgot there is also loads of House of Games on YT I have not watched, that will be perfect too.

      @@ReadBecca Only Connect is about finding the connections between seemingly random sets of clues. If you’ve seen the Connections game on the NYT website, one of the rounds is basically like that. Ooh yes, House of Games is fun. I love the Answer Smash round.

    Bargain Hunt is great daytime tv, reminds me of my student days. Antiques Road Trip is quite interesting too, which is experts just driving around looking for things, theres a couple of great clips of that when they have made massive profits. Antiques Roadshow is proper sunday tv too for many years. Repair Shop is big now, I never got into that one.

    • @ReadBecca
      @ReadBecca 6 дней назад

      That is hilarious, now want to know if that is a wider student phenomenon. I too watched a fair amount of midday game shows in uni years, here it was things like Price is Right as the big one. I feel there is a correlation of overworked brains in that time to my current state 😂 I also never got into antiques roadshow, I think because at least in the US version, what I saw of it had money grubbing vibes, which sort of lacks the appeal of people being there for a good time, and just feeling like winning something is an extra.

    One of my local little free libraries run by a local community centre put up a sign saying you should only take books if you leave one, and after that it got waaaay more full of rubbishy books that no-one wanted so that was a big mistake on their part, I think.

      @ReadBecca 6 дней назад

      Yikes, yes I can see how that would turn out a lot more garbage in the LFLs. I feel like some people who run their own run into people just taking them all to resell, I can kind of understand the want to put more limits, but eh on the official site it's like you can't stop people from being poo even with those measures so just keep it all free eh. It seems like here that happens once in awhile, but more often people do dump religious and sales junk in them, which is more frustrating to me.

    For Discworld, I've only read Going Postal but I'm hoping to read Hogfather around the holidays. Your editions are gorgeous. I hope you're feeling better.

    • @ReadBecca
      @ReadBecca День назад

      I'm kind of an outlier in that I like Hogfather for haloween more than being for christmas, though the holiday in it is indeed a barely obscured version of christmas. It is one of the darkest of the series. The adaptation is also excellent! The guy who was the man with thistledown hair in the Jonathan Strange adaptation had earlier played a villain in this, and pulled from that role as his inspiration when doing the creepy fae in Strange. Slowly but surely feeling better, thank you!

    The Wee Free Men sounds interesting...I have 2 questions: First, do you need to read at least some of the Discworld books first? Secondly, you said the heroine was young...is this directed towards a younger audience?

    • @ReadBecca
      @ReadBecca День назад

      Yes, because of Tiffany Aching's age and the strong coming of age journey as a plot arc, some people think it is YA - though I don't think it has ever been specifically sold under YA publisher/marketing. I tend to think it's pretty solid all ages writing/storytelling though. Wee Free Men has probably the least overlap with other books/subseries in the discworld, so it is a great place to start. It takes place in a very small rural community, and the only crossover character are the witches, somewhat briefly, whose subseries of books starts with Equal Rites. However, all of the discworld books expect the very first two (Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic, which are a single story together) can be picked up on their own for a satisfying story. What you get by reading in order is much more of the character & relationship progression, than needing to read in order to understand. Personally, I fully think the right way to read discworld for a start is just to pick up a book whenever you run into one, in any order 😁

      I agree that Little Free Libraries are not transactional. Lately, I have taken more books from Little Free Libraries than I have donated, but that’s only because I donated so many of my books to Little Free Libraries before I moved to a new city.

    I have Wee Free Men, but haven't read it quite yet. I'm a noob with discworld. I've read 5 and not in order! I have Repairman on hold... just waiting. I'm excited about Katie's series too! Glad the health issue wasn't major.

      I was momentarily confused by repairman, but that is a brilliant autocorrect I'm absolutely sure Terry would have appreciated. I very strongly maintain that the preferred reading order the first time for anyone, rather than all the complex charts and subseries, is to simply pick up whatever book is most readily at hand 😄 I think you will be very charmed by Tiffany whenever you do get to Wee Free Men.
