52 years ago I stood in Santiago de Compostela, and front of the steps, what we called "Spanish Steps" and took in all the architecture and glass windows overlooking the steps and said, I could live here. I ate and stayed at the 'parador' that you included. At 73 I am returning to Valencia at the end of February, where I went to school but had always for some reason loved Santiago de Compostela. Perhaps it will come to fruition as I search for the city that fits me in Spain, leaving the USA for a better quality of life. I love Spain. Thanks for the memory! Great job.
You're welcome, my friend! It's a pleasure to share it with you and I'm very glad that it brought back good memories of your visit to Santiago. Precisely one of my objectives in filming these walking tours is not only for people to discover the city but also for those who already know it to be able to "visit" it again. I suppose that many things have changed since your visit, although the most important things remain the same as always. I hope that you can visit Santiago again soon and walk its streets for yourself. Greetings and thank you very much for your visit and for sharing your memories.
@@WalkingSpain Any your mission is accomplished! Great job.

You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed Santiago de Compostela again. Thank you very much for your visit. Have a nice day!!
Hola. I watched the video last night. Great one as usual. I just read the text about Compostela now. Very interesting - "where tradition says the remains of the Apostle are found." Amazing to think that people walked from all over Europe to get to Compostela. It must have been tough getting over the Pyrenees! That was a great opening - the statue of a Spainard sitting on a bench looking out at that amazing view. I noticed the autumn leaves on the trees at the beginning again. Looks nice. (We had about 8 inches of snow on Sunday night. It looks nice from my balcony, but I'll have to go out and walk in it tomorrow. 😒) I like the statues of the two Spanish ladies, and they were in the colors of Spain - red and gold! I noticed those two benches there were also red and gold. 😃Nice! I think I heard a talking crosswalk as you were crossing the street. We have a few of those in Boston too, and they use a voice of a guy with a Boston accent. 🙂 (Actually, you don't hear the Boston accent in Boston too much these days. Most people who live there aren't originally from Boston.) I noticed the streets were very busy. The Plaza de Obradoiro is amazing! The cathedral, palace and hotel are all spectacular. The Raxoi Palace was awesome. Since I didn't read the text before I watched the video, I was wondering what the building was. It definitely looks like a palace. It must be beautiful on the inside too. And what a great hotel to stay in! I noticed so many of the buildings are made of stone. I was just looking at a picture of an old hotel in Boston as it was being built back in 1930, and I noticed the big stone blocks for the foundation were being moved with a horse cart and primitive cranes. It really makes you appreciate how difficult it must have been to build those buildings so much longer ago. Enjoyed the walk through the church. Amazing altar, and I think those were organ pipes up toward the ceiling? Just beautiful inside. Great video. Take care.
Hola! How are you? 8 inches of snow! 🥶 I think we've never seen that amount of snow here in Salamanca, it's obvious that your winters are in another league 😄 I'm glad you enjoyed this tour too. Yes, Compostela is known for sheltering (at least that's what tradition says) the remains of the Apostle Santiago, which is why every year it is filled with pilgrims from all over the world who want to walk the Camino de Santiago. There are several routes, although the best known is the one that begins in France and runs through the north of Spain, it is known as Camino Frances (French Way). Although most pilgrims do not do it completely and start in places closer to Santiago. I suppose that nowadays crossing the Pyrenees must not be so complicated, but as you say in the Middle Ages it must have been very hard, as well as dangerous in many parts of the trip because there were many vandids. At that time it was a real challenge to complete the Camino de Santiago, they must have had a lot of faith. Sculpture of the ladies represents the typical Galician older ladies, with scarves on their heads... and with an umbrella in case it rains 😄 (that day I was very lucky because it was a sunny day). I also liked that sculpture I found it very curious what you said about the traffic lights with a Boston accent... Although it is a shame that this accent is heard less and less! The one heard on this tour speaks in Galician and has a Galician accent! 😄 In the rest of Spain, traffic lights usually don't have a voice, they just make a beep, and when they do, it's with a neutral accent, so you could say that this traffic light is a rarity. Old town of Santiago has preserved the urban planning of the Middle Ages very well, with narrow and labyrinthine streets. It is a type of urban planning that I really like because you never know where you might end up (in fact, at one point during the tour I thought I had gotten lost 😄) I agree with you, Plaza de Obradoiro is amazing, it is one of the most beautiful in Spain (although as a native of Salamanca, in my opinion, the most beautiful is the one in Salamanca 😁). In this square are perhaps the most spectacular cathedral in Spain and one of the most beautiful hotels (and also the oldest) and of course the town hall in front of the cathedral could not be missing 😄 You are right, I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been to build those great cathedrals in those times, even in more recent times it must have been difficult to build the first large skyscrapers in the United States with these materials. I'm sorry I couldn't film more of the inside of the cathedral, but at that time, except for the altar, there wasn't much lighting and the images were very noisy. You're right, what you see at the end are the organ pipes. You can't see it very well in the video, but in front of the altar is the botafumeiro, which is one of the most famous symbols of this Cathedral. It's a large censer that moves from the central dome of the Cathedral. When it's in operation, it's really spectacular to see how it moves from one side of the cathedral to the other, throwing out smoke. I hope everything went well and you didn't have any mishaps with the snow. Thanks for your visit! Nos vemos. Take care
@WalkingSpain For the first time in 130 years, New Orleans in the southern US got 8 inches of snow, as well as near Pensacola Florida. So who knows, maybe it will happen in Salamanca too. 😆

It gave me goosebumps as you crossed over the road from the park and walked up through the city, this is the route on the final section of the Camino Portuguese. I have completed it three times and returning this April. I can't believe how few pilgrims were in the square.
You are right, there were few pilgrims compared to other times I have visited the city, perhaps it was because of the date it was filmed, a few weeks before Christmas. Thank you very much for your comment and I hope you enjoy the Camino de Santiago when you return. Greetings!!

Hola! Enjoyed watching the video. I was just thinking that this might be the only video you've ever made in rainy weather, or at least right after the rain. 🙂 Very different atmosphere than the other videos. At the beginning down by the water with the cloudy weather, it almost felt a little bit like New England. 🙂 Well, we're just on the other side of the Atlantic. I like that little beach there at the beginning by the church. Lots of benches there! The church has a very solid, rugged feel to it. I guess it's the Atlantic and the weather in this part of Spain. Do they get storms off the ocean there? Also, the building next to the church at 6:17 is very beautiful with the portico and balcony with the wrought iron. I saw a cross on the church, so I guess it's part of the church. Very beautiful. I noticed lots of people eating in the cafes in the town, even with the rainy weather. It must be pretty cool there too. They did a good job with the fake snow on the Christmas trees. 🙂 I'm curious, does it ever snow anywhere in Spain? Maybe up around Santander? At 17:48, I noticed the beautiful colors on the trees there. It suddenly looked like autumn again.😀 The Santa Maria Basilica has a very solid/austere look to it as well, compared to some of the more ornate churches in other parts of Spain. That's an interesting video board at 26:30. I have no idea what that video ad is about, but it must have something to do with tongues! 😂 It looks like a nice casino there. (did you try your luck on the slot machines? 😀) I can't quite figure out what that statue/sculpture is about around 28:00, but it looks like the guy fell over and hit his head.🙂 I thought the sculpture of the people at the Maritime Station, with one guy waving goodbye (or hello), was beautiful. Makes me think of all the people who have passed through there over the generations. Nice. Well, I enjoyed seeing this part of Spain. I think if you got in a boat and headed straight across the Atlantic from here, you would probably land right in Boston. 😂 Take care.
Hola! I hope you had a good start to the year. You are right, I don't have many tours where rainy weather appears, and curiously the few I have are from northern cities. As you say, the atmosphere is completely different. Galicia is the region of Spain where it rains the most and I personally think that this rainy climate makes Galician cities have a special and beautiful atmosphere, perhaps the type of materials with which the buildings are built there also contributes to this, I think that the small church at the beginning is a perfect example of what I am saying, the stone with which it is built is blackened by the rain and gives it a beautiful appearance, on the other hand the building next to it seems more typical of the south and does not have the same effect (I think as you say it also belongs to the church although I am not sure). In any case it is a nice contrast between these two buildings. You are not far off when you compare New England with this region, since Galicia has a strong link since ancient times with Irish and Celtic culture. In fact, I have read that there is research confirming that Galicians and Irish share genes. So it is not strange that there is a small connection between New England and Galicia. As we often say here: El mundo es un pañuelo (World is like a handkerchief) which could be translated as it’s a small world. Regarding your question about storms off the ocean. Your assumption is correct, in fact not far from Vigo there is a coast that has the name of Costa da Morte (in Galician) or Costa de la muerte (in Spanish) whose translation is coast of death, due to the large number of shipwrecks that occur there due to the waves and the geography of the coast that is full of cliffs. By the way, the start of the tour belongs to the Bouzas neighborhood, which is a little further away from the old town of Vigo. It used to be a fishing village but ended up being absorbed by the city and becoming part of it. That is why it seems so different from the rest of the city. I think that in Spain we are so fond of sitting down to have a drink on terraces that we don't care what the weather is like, whether it's raining or extremely hot 😄 Yes, there are regions in Spain where it snows frequently, but they are inland, in high altitude areas. You're right, the region where Santander is located (although not so much in the city of Santander since it's on the coast) snows very frequently because there is a mountain range that runs through the north of Spain and is very close to the coast (it's called the Cantabrian Mountains) You're right, that basilica has a very austere appearance compared to others in other cities, especially the cathedral on my next tour in Galicia (this is a little clue as to what my next video will be 😄). This co-cathedral is relatively new, as it was built in the 19th century. No, I didn't try my luck on the slot machines, otherwise I'd be broke now 😄. I had no idea what the video on the giant screen was about either, so I took a closer look and managed to figure out what it was about. The video makes a pun on the word "lengua", which in Spanish means both language and tongue. It's meant to encourage the use of the Galician language among citizens, it says something like "show your tongue/language" Like you, I also thought it was about a man hitting his head on the ground, but the sculpture is called El nadador (The swimmer), so it's actually about a swimmer entering the water 😵 I definitely prefer the sculptures at the end of the tour, it's about a family saying goodbye to a man who is forced to leave his home (the sculpture of the man with the suitcase can be seen a few meters ahead). It is a tribute to all the Galician emigrants, since the Galicians were the Spaniards who had to emigrate the most during the 19th and 20th centuries. It is another of the things that Irish and Galicians have in common, although in the case of the Galicians they were heading towards Latin America instead of the United States, in fact in Latin America the Spaniards are known as Galicians (Gallegos) You are very observant regarding the location of Vigo in relation to Boston 😉👍 I had not noticed that detail and you are quite right, they are practically facing each other separated by a small puddle of water 😆 In fact, I was curious to know exactly how far away they are and using Google Maps I have checked the exact coordinates of the place where my tour ended and its latitude is a few miles away from Boston, exactly in a small town called Minot 😲 Do you know this town? Thank you very much for your visit, as always! Nos vemos. Take care
@@WalkingSpain --- In fact, I have read that there is research confirming that Galicians and Irish share genes. -> Ah, so I might have some Galician genes in me. 😉 --- It is another of the things that Irish and Galicians have in common, although in the case of the Galicians they were heading towards Latin America instead of the United States, in fact in Latin America the Spaniards are known as Galicians (Gallegos) -> Very interesting!!! --- a few miles away from Boston, exactly in a small town called Minot -> I do indeed know this town. It's a section of the town called Scituate, which is part of the south shore of the Boston area. In fact, I am currently living just two towns directly west of Minot. Only about 5 miles away. 😆 Take care.
@@bostonwalkdrive7763 😄 You shouldn't rule it out! It is possible that I even have Galician genes and don't even know it 😆 Really! Then I'll say the same thing as in my previous message... El mundo es un pañuelo! Have a nice day!!
