Hola! Great video, as always. Once again, I'm watching on a Sunday night, with a cup of coffee, but this time from the Boston area once again. Whew, glad that moving stuff is over. It's stressful.
Anyway, I think the Roman history in Spain is really interesting, since I mostly associate it with Italy. Although, I did read a detailed classic book about the Roman Empire about 10 years ago, so I probably knew more about it back then, and forgot most of it by now. 😕 Oh well. This video definitely makes me think of The Gladiator too. Walking through the amphitheater, I'm definitely thinking of a couple of scenes in the movie, and it really helps to bring it to life.
The size of the amphitheater is really quite large, especially for 8 BC. I imagine going to a game there back in ancient times must have felt as impressive as going to huge football stadium today. Did the arched passages at 5:30 seem very low by today's standards? It was a little hard to tell in the video, but it seemed low. I was thinking that the average height must have been a bit shorter back then. I think in the US, even some old Colonial buildings have very low ceilings by today's standards (and that's not very old compared to 8 BC!)
Anyway, at 7:00, I think that was The Spainiard! 😄 And at 8:00, I was definitely imagining a scene from Gladiator. I was wondering at 11:35 what that was ... a well maybe?
At 12:42, I was wondering if those were columns at one time, or if they are pedestals that used to hold statues? 🤔 Interesting at 13:09 that the columns seem to be made out of both brick and granite. 🤔
14:45, wow, those columns behind the huge stage! Very impressive. I wonder what type of performances they had at that theater, and if ordinary people ever could go there. I'm thinking yes at the amphitheater shows for sure. Anyway, another surprise moment in a video - music at 18:45! Up close, the marble columns are even more impressive. Wondering who the statues were, and who it was that got the most prominent place for a statue at 21:40. Must be VIP's (Very Important People)😀
    Very enjoyable video. Take care.

Hola de nuevo! I hope the move wasn't too hard. I'm glad to know that you are already settled in your new apartment and also that you can enjoy the tour with a coffee 😄
In my case, these few days in Merida I have also helped me learn a little more about the time of the Roman Empire, especially in regards to how they built their cities.
You're right, amphitheater must have been quite large for its time, although nothing compared to the Colosseum in Rome, as we usually say here, it played in another league. The Amphitheater had a capacity for about 15,000 people, which taking into account that the city had 50,000 inhabitants during the Roman Empire (it was a lot for the time, in fact Merida was the ninth most important city in the entire empire) is quite remarkable. I doubt they could always fill the capacity, except when The Spainiard participated 😆
Corredors of the amphitheater were really low, I had to lower my head when passing through the arches, I think they were low even for people of that time 😄
Yes, it is a well. That entire area of gardens and columns was a building that had a patio in the center.
Regarding what you say about the columns, a tourist guide once explained to me that when an old building is restored the original part must be clearly distinguishable from the part that is a modern addition, so I think that in this case the part of the columns that are made of brick are not original.
During my time at the theatre, I saw this choir of tourists singing and a man reciting on stage, so I think this place must be inspiring 😄 although I can really understand it since they won't find a better place to do it . As a curiosity, theatrical performances are still held there today.
From the info I have found, that sculpture of the woman belongs to the goddess Ceres or maybe to the wife of Caesar Augustus (so you are right, she is a VIP 😆)
Thank you very much as always for visiting me! I am happy you have enjoyed. See you Take care!!
