4R75W/4R75E automatic transmission first gear whine | 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L V8
The 4R75E/W is commonly found in the Ford Crown Victoria (2006-2012 for LX civilian and 2004-2011 for the Police Interceptor models), Mercury Grand Marquis (2006-2011), Lincoln Town Car (2006-2011), Ford F-150 (2004-2008), Ford Expedition (2004-2006) and Ford Econoline (2005-2014).This is just a video demonstrating the first gear whine in the 4R75W/4R75E transmissions, as well as the 4R70W/4R70E. The straight cut teeth in the planetary gearset in these transmissions make a very noticeable sound in first gear. This is a common normal noise.

0:12 - 0:14 i love that sound more then anything
Man that thing has tall gears whats your rpm at 70 and 80 mph?
I love that 5.4 roar.
I'd have to say that's about average amount of squat for a 1/2 ton truck with that kind of weight, it's really not that bad.
Is he still Driving that truck
No, it was sold back in 2011.
@@TheTerminator310why did he sell it
@@ANDERSONEXPRESS7 He had bought a diesel F-250 to replace it to pull campers with.
I’m slowly heading for 200k miles on my 2007. I have 183,000 on her now. Thanks for commenting about maintenance. I did the transmission pan drop and differential+engine coolant. Honestly, it seems our trucks with the 5.4L and this model year haven’t given us any trouble. Thanks again!
It's not that bad. The way folks talk about it, I figured it would take 10 minutes with the whole lane of traffic honking at you behind.
How do you like these 06-07 Lincoln TC's, reliability and driving experience wise? I'm looking at picking one up.
I like them. They're pretty reliable. Air suspension can give issues, but I've heard they're fairly easy to fix, or you can convert it to coil springs, in lieu of air bags. Front suspension components are a bit problematic too, mainly ball joints. When I bought this one, the upper control arms were already bad, mainly from sitting. The climate control for air conditioning heat is sometimes problematic. They start losing their ability to hold vacuum and thus will cause air direction to default to defrost and never come out of it. Blend door actuators breaking I think are the biggest problem with these since the dash has to come loose to get to them. As far as engine/transmission, they are pretty damn solid. The 4.6 doesn't even make much power, so the internals are never overtaxed. You take care of it and it will take care of you.
I met you watching Pauls wringer washer videos! I didnt know you was into vics and marquis! They are one of my dream cars to own and have as a daily drive-someday soon hopefully! I just liked and subscribed to you-hope you make more videos about these in the future!
Thanks for liking/subscribing! Yes, I love these cars. I own this '07 Grand Marquis. as well as an '06 Town Car. They're awesome!
@@TheTerminator310 what do you think is the best year/series to get?
@@lookingback6314 I like 2006-2011 because they have the heavier duty 4R75E automatic transmission. I think they also added a few extra threads for the spark plugs in 2004 to mitigate the sudden spark plug ejection issue. It didn't fix it, but it was at least not as bad.
@@TheTerminator310 Thanks for the advice. I want to stock up on a few clean ones before the derby drivers eat them all up as they are the number 1 car of choice. I love demolition derbies but I cringe everytime I see clean panthers get destroyed as they never again will exist! What a horrible fate!
@@lookingback6314 I feel you. They are becoming harder to find now in good condition and seeing them get destroyed is painful. I've always been a Crown Victoria enthusiast and the 2 I have, I want to preserve them as long as possible.
I got a 2001 5.2 automatic sport 4x4 with 4.10 gears. Used to haul a 7000lbs boat with trailer. My brother has a new ram so hes doing it now. Now all mine does is a 3000lbs camper every other weekend.
I hear this every day trying to find parking space in my Grand Marquis 😂
I have always LOVED that sound!
Inline 6 from back then you can always coax a bit of a faster acceleration time with a manual. The torque converter was robbing a lot of what limited power you had.
Yeah and to top it off: An absurdly tall 1st gear ratio of 2.54:1 and a 3.23 rear gear.
Have an 07 F-150 with the 5.4L 2WD and max towing package. Rated for 8600lbs. It’s got 176k miles on her now. I’ve changed spark plugs. What other maintenance should I do now? Only issue was cylinder misfires that cost $1500 to fix at the Ford dealer at around 120k miles. Is yours running strong still?
Runs great. It's exceeded my expectations, so far. Only maintenance I can recommend is 5W-30 and keep it changed often. Sane for plugs. Keep 'em changed every 50k miles, or so. Transmission pan drop with new filter and fluid (don't flush unless the transmission has been flushed regularly since new). If diff fluid has never been changed, I'd recommend that too, as well as antifreeze flush, etc.
Rhino Ramps 👍
Yeah, I've used them for years and they are awesome.
I’ve got a little over 242,000 on my 2008 Expedition EL Limited.
Nice. I wish more of these engines went the distance, like that. Still, maintenance goes a long way, though. I'm squeezing every half mile out of this truck that I can get.
Ayo you still got that pick up?
Yes sir! Still runs perfect!!
Man that’s awesome. I got an 06’ and love it.
@@datgriffcray Nice. Just make sure to do frequent oil changes. The 5.4 3v engine is definitely not the best motor, but it can last if you take really good care of it.
No oil pressure?
Original sending unit was discontinued/replaced with an aftermarket oil pressure gauge.
Video seems so vintage and yet this was posted in 2007.. love my 2006 f150 fx4 140 k miles
2011, actually. But yeah, I love this one too. Still running perfectly with 210k.
Notes: There are 2 servo operated brake bands in the 4R70 transmissions. The Low/Reverse Band is used for Reverse and Manual 1st engine braking, which can help determine whether the reverse clutch is toast, or the reverse band is busted (if there’s no engine braking in M1) when there’s a no reverse complaint. The Overdrive Band is used for 4th/Overdrive and Manual 2nd engine braking, which can help determine if a no Overdrive concern is caused by a worn out band, a broken servo e-clip or snap ring jamming the servo regulator valve (if there’s no engine braking in M2).
Good old Ravigneaux style planetary geartrain.
That's not too bad. 20 years ago I had 1981 Diplomat with the 225. I was in college and had time and with my father we put a 4 barrel on it along with better exhaust. Got the 0-60 down to around 9
Never liked Mopar electical systems. Always problematic
I am right there with you. However, I will say I do like the external alternator volt regulator.

Not too bad.

I’ve hauled a 2006 dodge Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 with a dodge Dakota 4.7l. Plus 10-15 other cars. It had a “sissy automatic”
Hard to believe 12 years ago when this video was new I was only 12 years old. Im guessing your truck is a 98? Edit: the second fart 😂😂 Minus the burning gas I'd love to hang out with y'all
Haha, thanks. And 12 years later, I can assure you that the gas has gotten no better Yeah, it's hard to believe how time gets away from us. I was 16, at the time. I leave these videos up just for the memories, at this point.
@@TheTerminator310 nothing wrong with that at all! Keep em here for future generations to see!
Man this makes me want to keep my Duster...
That runs just fine, and is all you need as long as you can drive.
My 98 1500 5.2 5-speed barely get out of own way. Switched from 3.21 to 4.10 and it was like another truck. Easily pulled 9000lbs and mileage went up!!!!
I remember the last time I went to century plaza it was during my 16th birthday and it still had India Shop and Spencer's, and it was the best Spencer's in Alabama. It was mainly bigger in the early 90's because the Galleria took most of their business and the decline of the area too. I'm sure alot of us had some good times there.
06 navigator with this 5.4 shakes at idle, but takes off, no codes at all except a lean code briefly appeared.
Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.
@@TheTerminator310 You know you can actually hear it, where do these typically come from, very loud under the hood.
@@rysterstech If it's 4x4, then it could be a vacuum line to the hubs, or something. Or maybe a leak in the lines to the brake booster. Could be a leak in the PCV hose, etc.
@@TheTerminator310 will look one day and see. It is a 2wd
I do know the brakes are terrible, probably dangerously low on fluid, the car has had its tags turned in and insurance cancelled as its not mine. It has a leak on the passenger side front door, we didn't know it was there until we quit parking it under the carport, we found it when mold and wasps had taken over the entire interior, it's probably going to be scrapped soon. We have had it for all but 30k miles and it the children have destroyed its interior9@@TheTerminator310
Is this the optional Performance Handling Package with dual exhausts making 239 hp and a rear axle ratio of 3.27?
No, this is standard single exhaust with 2.73 gears. 224 hp.
@@TheTerminator310 Is there a big difference in performance between the dual exhaust version with a gear ratio of 3:27 and the standard version
@@GM-zb4mu Not a huge difference, but it's noticeable on takeoff. 0-40 MPH is definitely quicker, due to the shorter gear. The downside to the HPP is maybe 1 MPG less on the highway. I prefer the standard version, simply because I don't have to mess with fixing leaking air bags, etc. I like coil springs.
That's what the 7.3 was designed to do. "Rolling Coal" is fine but hauling 16k behind you has to be rewarding.
Raise the rpm shift to 6k and you’ll stay on the power band when it shiftes since is a 4spd
Shifting at 6000 will cause converter failure, over time due to ballooning. Have to upgrade the converter before these can rev like that. Plus, the 5.4 having such an absurdly long stroke, they just don’t really make any power above 5400.
My 05 expedition 5.4 3v has 213,000 and still cant hear it idling standing in front of it from 20 ft away. I dont know if its driving habits manufacturing or luck but it purs like new. Its actually quiter than yours when you went under the wheel well. Mine sounds like an old 2v.
Yeah, this one has always had a lash adjuster that ticks on and off. Doesn't always tick. Typical 3v issue.
Wish that could be said about the 06 navigator.
You worry too much! The oil pressure is fine and has enough power. Learn to slow down, how much power do you think you need and noise do you want to make???
Lol, I drive too fast? This is 2023. Highway speed limits aren't 55 anymore. But yes, the truck has just enough power to do what I use it for. And if I need more power, I have my 2007 F-150 with a 5.4 V8, which will yank 3 of these old trucks sideways. On the subject of oil pressure: I'm just not used to seeing single digit oil pressure numbers. But, this video is almost 6 years old and I've learned a lot since this video. Either way, I love these old Dodge's.
engine strong in my coyote 22 mpg i got on the highway
dammm im happy for you man! i got a 2014 f150 5.0 and its got 192k on it but i am having issues with the brakes but runs great.
Hey, man! Been a long time! Good to hear from you! Yeah, those year 5.0s like what you have are very reliable trucks, for sure!
