He disagreed, and asked if I honestly felt that we should abandon children that needed our help. I said yes, because..." "No, you don't understand. I was born and raised on Malevelon Creek. All my friends, family, everyone I ever loved lived there... and those... those fucking clanking bastards nearly turned it into a glass ball. I fought on the front lines of the Creek back when everyone was calling us exaggerating cowards for not helping with the war effort against the Terminids. While other Helldivers were mowing down Terminids with every resource at Super Earth's disposal, we Creek Crawlers paid for every inch of land with our blood and sweat. We were cut off from Super Earth several times, but we fought on, because we were not going to let them take the Creek as long as we still drew breath. It took weeks, months, but eventually the Creek was ours again... and it meant nothing to me. By the time we had won, everyone I knew was either dead or missing. My parents? Mowed down by chainsaws. My neighbors? Mortar fire. My home? A smoking crater. Not just that, but I had watched countless comrades that fought for their own families die to crimson barrages in the fog... and nobody seemed to care. They died protecting family that was already dead." "Yeah, I know. But since Malevelon Creek, I've almost exclusively fought against the Automatons. Baring a direct order from Super Earth, I always took assignments to kill those fucking clankers any chance I got. I wanted them to pay for what they did. I wanted them to hurt. To suffer. So I continued my campaign against the automatons for another few months, rising up through the ranks to a Commander, leading other Helldivers that had that same burning hatred inside them that I did... and then a new Major Order was sent out. High Command had begun Operation Trolley Problem - and assigned me to a squad that was lead by Hell Commander Yester Shaw. I had heard he was also a Veteran of the Creek, so I assumed we were doing the smart thing and engaging the enemy to take that munitions factory. So when Hell Commander Shaw said we ere going after the Children's Hospital, I might have told him he was a fool for doing so." "Honestly, he could've spaced my ass right then and there, and nobody would've batted an eye. When I told him that the children were nothing to me, I wasn't kidding. I had so much rage in my heart... so much hatred for those metallic bastards that I didn't care about anything other then killing each and every single one of them. Hell Commander Shaw berated me for my insubordination, and then said something to me that just... I don't know... it stuck in my mind long after he said it. He said 'Son, why the hell do you think we wear capes? Tactically, they are a massive pain in the ass and no soldier in their right mind would recommend we wear them... but it's more then that.' He grabbed my cape. 'This means something. This cape is a symbol of freedom, liberty, and above all... hope. We don't dive into hell to kill, we dive into hell to protect. When a civilian sees this cape, they should know they're safe. That the Helldivers *will* protect them - no matter the cost to us. I understand your hatred of the Automatons, I really do, more then you know... but we can't forget that for every life we lost on the Creek, we saved a thousand more. That's why we do this, that's why you wear a cape, and that's why when I order you to dive on Vernen Wells you say...?' "Well, of course my answer was 'yes sir.' We were dropping ten minutes later, and I'll be honest, his speech hadn't exactly sunk in yet. I was still boiling with hatred, and just wanted to get this mission done so I could get back to my usual squad and keep killing cluckers. When we landed on Vernen Wells, it was worse then we all thought it would be. The Automatons had a pretty strong foothold on the planet, so we were immediately on the backfoot. Vernen Wells is a desert planet so it was hotter than Democracy's ballsack out there, and as if that wasn't bad enough - the planet is dominated by a series of continent mesas and plateaus, some of which are the size of skyscrapers. This geography obstructed some of our stratagems, which made fighting our way to the hospital that much harder... but when we were fighting to save those kids I saw something I didn't expect." "Helldivers. So many Helldivers - we darkened the skies with Hellpods as we dropped in, overwhelming the Automatons with our sheer numbers. I'd never seen so many of my fellows in one place before - Hell Commander Shaw had to keep us from gawking as we continued our push, and eventually we reached our target: Super Citizen Anne's Hospital For Very Sick Children. It was a mess - surrounded on all sides and nearly reduced to ruble, we thought maybe we were too late to save the civilians taking refuge inside. It was during our assessment of the terrain that Hell Commander Shaw was hit by an enemy sniper. Thankfully his armor took the brunt of the hit for him, but he was incapacitated and without stims at the worst possible time. The clankers were about to breach the hospital's defenses, so Hell Commander Shaw ordered me to take point as we approached. I lead the charge as we and another squad performed a pincer maneuver on a group of clankers on the East side of the complex. We couldn't use heavy artillery stratagems since it would risk collapsing that side of the building, so we resorted to EMF mortars, Orbital Airbursts, and Eagle-1's Strafing Runs." "Maybe, but we were running out of time and didn't have many other options. Anyway, it didn't take long before we cleared the East side, and I was the first to approach the building. One corner had partially collapsed from a previous engagement, and I heard something, a little noise coming from under the concert. I walked over to one of the slabs that used to be a wall that had fallen over and lifted it with all my might, eventually getting it partially elevated enough to move it to the side. There, underneath the ruble, was a single little girl. She was crying, tears down her face... Couldn't have been much older that eight years old. She looked like such a fragile little thing... malnourished, bruised in places, clothes that were filthy and nearly shredded... but when she looked up at me.... her eyes..." *[Helldiver reportedly shifted for a moment before wiping something away from their eyes]* "Her eyes lit up, and she looked up at me with... awe. She struggled to move, but when I crouched down to offer her my hand to help her out... she seemed to hesitate for a second. Not looking at me, but around us. She asked in a shaky voice: 'Are they gone?' I realized she was looking for more of those... god, she must've thought they were monsters. I remembered what Hell Commander Shaw told me about civilians and how they viewed us, so I spoke up and said:" "It's alright, you're safe. The Helldivers are here." "She took my hand... it was so small. Dainty. By Liberty's ring, I was worried I might accidentally break her hand if I squeezed too tight. Once she was out of the ruble, she immediately wrapped her arms around my neck and began to sob into my shoulder while she thanked me. I'm not going to lie to you... I'm glad I was wearing the helmet. That way she didn't see me crying too. I hugged her back, and for the first time since the Creek I felt something I hadn't felt in my heart in the longest time, and I finally understood Hell Commander Shaw's words. I shouldn't dive into hell to kill... and I don't anymore. That day, as I carried that girl back to the Pelican, I swore I would dive into hell to protect them. All of them. The people that can't protect themselves. Automatons, Terminds, or whatever else might come. We are Liberty, Freedom, Democracy... Hope. We are Helldivers, and we are here."

This one, this one hits home. Even if shooting down dropships does not do a lot of damage to hulks and bigger bots, i still love to do so.I remember one Eva, on top of the hill, the one with the tight choke point as entrance. We were defending that hill, without Super-Destroyer on low orbit, Only us, andour guns. Finishing the box on my MG, i come over to cover, to do a quick reload, and then come back to the edge of our little Liberty hill, as dropship whirls and lands in a few meters in front of me, knocking me out into the rock i was hiding behind. Thanks to the explosive resistantce perk on the armor, i get up, inject a stim, rack the charging handle, and gift all of my last bullets towards marching bots during the last 10 seconds until Pelican arrival. That's what Helldivers 2 is for me. It's not just a PVE horde shooter, It's a fight for your life, every damn second that you're on the ground. Every time i come over to a teammate to help him, it's always 4-5 kills that coming after the fellow diver, and a 1 pesky hunter that gets in melee for a slap and 3 rounds into his belly. Somehow, after 110 levels it still feels special. Every damn time.

the fact that liberating vernen wells saved children irl and you get a picture showing a child holding the hand of a helldiver with the words "THANK YOU HELLDIVERS"

Would be so much better than running around a map for 3/4 of the time.
