Airstream Nest Hands-On: A futuristic symbol of freedom
HTML-код

- Airstream’s shiny metal trailers are a symbol of freedom and wealth. It’s a piece of retro chic design that’s never lost its allure and even if you’ve never thought about owning a travel trailer before, you probably secretly lust after one of these homes away from home.
The Nest (starting at $45,900) is different. After decades of aluminum, Airstream introduced fiberglass into the mix and while the exterior looks different from the rest of the lineup, the inside is just as cozy and smartly laid out as its gleaming-in-the-daylight cousins.

Please tell me that 46k includes the truck lol
Lol... I thought the exact same thing. I was like, maybe they give that trailer away for free to anyone that buys the truck.
Or a duplex , both sides like I did .
Nah just the airstream name included
Nope. Just a mini toilet that gets wet when you shower and a propane stove.
@Ash Moe or travel the world and stay in $20 Airbnbs.
1:56 "$46000 Trailer". yup im out
I bought a van for $500
BUT THERE ARE 8, count em' 8 USB ports !!!! LOL
"It's an exercise in overt minimalism"........except for the price ;)
Peter Gozinya my favorite line, especially after he lists so many unnecessary features that are used to justify an absurd price point haha
The problem isn't the price, it's the fact that you just don't make enough money in life to afford these things, it's as simple as that.
you could buy 2 casitas or olivers or scamps or escapes that are bigger for that price
I don't get it. $45,000 buys a lot of hotel room nights.
Rick Lee Exactly what I thought.
$50 a night, around 30 days a year, for the next 30 years..
@@J.D.Vision , where are you finding hotels where people want to go for $50 a night?
Biker Boiy, we had a $10,000 travel trailer we bought in 2001. Averaged 80 nights a year and camped in 24 states. There are many places you can camp and enjoy nature where there are no hotels nearby. Sitting around a campfire, mountain biking, hiking, cooking the fish you caught, lying in a hammock, etc. There are things you can enjoy and places you can experience that hotels just cant live up to. Also, sleeping in the same bed every night can be critical for a good night's sleep for many people. After 15 years use, we sold the trailer for $3000. So, about $500 a year to own the trailer.
only by the hour.... ( ;
Nice unit so overpriced it's not even funny though, 46K is just plain nuts
No TV tho, did it even have a fridge???? 🔌📺❄🍺👌😹
All airstreams are very expensive. The standard stainless steel ones last forever and have great resale value. It seems they were going for that market but kept the price super high. Doesn’t make any sense.
Just saw this at a dealership. The screen door got stuck mid way on all three models they had. Things rattled when you closed the door. Everything feels cheap and cramped. The Basecamp on the other hand felt solid, bigger on the inside, much higher quality and $10,000 cheaper than the Nest.
The basecamp is UGLY in my opinion. I would much rather have the 16' Bambi over that trailer anyday.
Stopped watching once he said 46k
Joseph Marra right
Joseph Marra, I hear you. As a full-time Airstreamer for the last 15 years (a 2006 24' International), I can assure you that the functionality and quality of Airstream is outstanding. They don't lose value and are available used because they last. My Airstream, my little Honda Element and my 1700 Kawasaki Vulcan is all I need and love. Airstream is a high-priced luxury, yes, but you truly get what you pay for :o)
That was like a gut 👊🏻 punch 😩 when I heard the price.
Hey Airstream! Have you read the comments? Maybe you should reevaluate your pricing.
What if a person named Airstream read your comment?
I think it is priced right. It is more for people that care about looks, brand, etc, than functionality. And those people are usually willing to throw money away to get it. Seriously, what serious traveler would ever even consider buying one of these?
yeah the very first statement was "their shiney trailers are a symbol of freedom and wealth" freedom and idiots lol
If it sells in the numbers they expect, then their pricing is spot on. My wife and I passed through Nashville and checked out the Gaylord Opryland Hotel which is decorated for Christmas on all it's interior atriums. The cheapest room went for over $200 a night and the average cost of a meal was $30 at one of the many on property restaurants. I thought it was ridiculous, but they were doing a booming business. A lot of people with a lot of money to blow out there.
Their the campers for the generation that will never finish paying off their student loans and will retire with zero in savings .
This would be a great camper for $16k. Anybody that would pay $46k is on crack.
You said 16 . . I was thinking 15, we're in the same ballpark. Airstream though, I'm not paying them 46K to advertise their name . . not Stuck On Stupid.
Actually, some rich people are functional drug addicts, not just poor people referred to as crackheads!!!! 👌💉😵💊
You can't buy a 20 yr old used fibreglass trailer for that. You better not watch any Rolls Royce/Bentley/Ferrari/Lamborghini videos. Your head will explode when you learn the price. You need to pay if you want quality and luxury.
Thanks for your honesty. I've owned ten airstreams by now, and I'll stay traditional. Thanks. Silver is gold.
Nice review
But not worth buying 👎🏻
I’m in the trailer business, and as nice as these are, far too expensive. It’s more of a cult following more than anything!
only affordable if 🤤🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤑💵
Yea what’s that $500 a month payments to camp out ? At that price it better be stainless at least
Shaun Shaun All R.V’s get a Q.C inspection. Not all get a full PDI at the factory.
Cough, cough spew, $46,000.00 base model?? Yeah, okay!
Spew indeed. They're spewing it if they want to convince people something like that is worth 46,000.
Despite all the comments on the high price, Airstream sales are increasing and they are expanding their production plant. They're doing something right.
What’s new is old. The front window design harkens back to the mid 1930’s “Buck Rogers” Airstreams. We had the good fortune to have owned 2 older Airstreams for our travelling pleasure. No matter how old, time of year, or where you happen to be Airstreams always bring people over to chat with their owners. We’ve met some of the finest people one could hope to meet on the road when they’ve stopped by to see inside our trailer.
Its good to see Airstream reaching out to differing demographics with their Basecamp and Nest models. Airstreams are part of the fabric of American History.
What a terrible trailer for that price, all the nice things he points out other trailers for 28k have already and nothing seems unique except that it's airstream so of course engadget covers it.
Correct. You can get a Winnebago _Minnie Drop_ for way less money. And a new one at that, too.
Thank you. I have a slide in truck camper that is older and I got for $3900.00 with pretty much all the same features than this. Nothing special here except a brand new shiny name brand to show off with that's it's an Airstream.
I mean, after all Engadget is a tech site and Nest started as a tech company.
Keren Wang this thing has no relation to Nest Labs that makes cameras and smoke detectors.
But it has 8 usb ports !!
$46k and they can't be bothered to line up the screw heads on the socket wall plates? Nope.
Hell SCREW? they should've just Gorilla Glued it all together. Fiberglass, Plastic or Whatever this thing is UGLY.
the swankiest trailer for people with lots of dough who never intend to use a trailer
Great start. But it is not a boondocker. And with parks filling up, boondocking is the future of quality RVing.
While we still have public land.
Stephen Albers The prices at campgrounds are out of control too. I switched to a van. No campground fees and no car rental or towing a car. I think vans are the future.
I’m selling my Travato and building out a new Promaster. The factory vans are too expensive and the complicated systems are expensive to maintain.
Bob Copeland sure wish Chevy, & Dodge would redesign The vans again and get back to selling something nice again
Yeah only rich fools would buy that box on wheels for that price.
Depro Nine Rich fools? Oxymoron, maybe?
@@kevincragun5853 99% of all wealth is inherited, so yeah only idiots would pay this price tag.
America has tons of rich fools , there just aren't very many of em . Go figure .
" Fat Americans"
we bought a 42 ft cyclone toy hauler for less than that!
This should be $15K, tops. Even then it would be overpriced.
You couldn't buy the raw materials for that. There are plenty of 20 year old trailers on their last legs on Craigslist you can probably afford if you only have $15k.
Great vid and nice features on The Nest... However, living a debt free life means, I will never be pulling a $46,000 rig. 😊👍
$46,000 + massively reduced mpg. Plus, it's another vehicle taking up space in the driveway. Maybe I'd rent one for a couple days, but never buy. For me, I'd rather rent a cabin, or pitch a tent.
You could build a entire large house and still have enough left over to pay the paving company for said driveway, though the taxes on purchasing the real estate lot to build it on would cost more than 46k if living in one of most cities. Then theres the taxes on water delivery, plus people are instantly paying the gross tax when they understand that theres a disgusting slime in the plumbling lines that are govt approved for drinking water that they pretend isn't really there, and lead poisoning if building in places such as Flint Michigan where the govt completely doesn't give a flying F what the quality of water is that you are expected to pay for. Its a corporately owned world, ran by corporately owned politicians that think everyone should be able to afford to spend 46k on a weekend mobile cottage/overpriced type of lunchbox that has wheels. Does airstreams factory even use enough or any filtration to stop all the VOC's from emitting into the atmosphere? The govt that rotates every 4 or so years probably doesn't regulate Airstream and others like em enough to expect that, just as long as they keep paying taxes on the business titles. They used to behead people who had nowhere else to go and couldnt afford to pay their taxes, and its still illegal to loiter in cities, as any well paid unionized officer of the law can inform you of that much.
Yes, once A.I. and it's automation really takes over, things are going to be much better, affordable everything.
@@truetech4158 What an insane reply.
@@Mike-wp1mo please be safe, things such as pandemics and homelessness never really produce happy happy afterlives in the sky.
Do you agree with that statement, yes, or no?
Jesus Christ 46k for this thing hell naw
And to think it was designed to have all the creature comforts of home, excluding the feeling as if you are standing in cold urine unless you put your shoes on to bleed the lizard while in the great indoors, while visiting the great outdoors, even though the outdoors is literally one step away. People's socks would get soaked if they didn't put on their puddle jumpers.
If to say that its a home away from home, then it deserves a factory recall just to fix that design flaw to the drain location.
Someone could slip on that shower water that might have pee in it from when they peed while having a shower, or be surprised at the feeling of their socks becoming more like cold wet mops and then become distracted towards losing their balance and end up disabled and then have to pay an extra 45 grand to have that mobile form of real estate fitted with a proper lift or a ramp that was designed by martin scorelli's cousin to always be way more expensive than the actual material costs, because draining the savings accounts of people living with disabilities is traditionally accepted from a profitable healthcare related business perspective.
And if to examine the variables further, a worst case scenario could in fact be to slip and fall in that thing within the first week, then they repo the thing while the disenfranchised purchaser finds their proximity relocated to within that of a hospital, and if its sold in a country that doesn't have free universal healthcare, the hospital costs alone can render a person having their regular land-based real estate also seized, then one ends up living on the edge of the sidewalk for the duration of their limited live only once lifespans back in the fancy world class city that has all those creature comforts.
Yeah, I want one of these for like...2,000
I originally thought I heard him say 4,590 in the video, not 45,900. I was excited for a minute.
I think $20k would be like a reasonable price.
probably how much the materials cost lol
I'd like a new Ferrari for $5000. Lemme know if you find one. I have the cash.
From the back it looks like a porta-potty
It IS a porta-potty!
A puddle potty???? 😵 🌊🚽🚿
I love it better the high maintenance stainless steel model. Easy to clean, easy to setup and get to camping. Roomie enough to hang out in if the weather isn't being kind. This is a great solution to get into the travel life at the lower end of the price tag with all the comforts of home. I would definitely get the bamboo floor panel for the shower.
Betcha it will be a poor seller, $25k would be more than enough. Airstream is riding on their name, and will fail at selling these by the numbers.....
46k get you a a real air stream that will last forever not fiberglass
I hope they pay more attention to quality control on this line of trailers than they do on the regular airstreams.. They are just relying on the old name and not actually delivering on quality.
So far that hasn't been the case. I hope that changes.
Absolutely beautiful
Honesty! How refreshing
Wow the back half of an '86 Ford Telstar mounted on a trailer with an Airstream logo slapped on it...how chic.
For the same $45K, you can get a pretty awesome used 27 foot NEWER trailer, and pocket $30K. You will miss out on NOTHING, and be happy you saved a butt load of cash.
And full remodel it with hi tech if you wanted for less then the airstream
Kids in junior high would think the bathroom funny? I still have tears of laughter after hearing the price😂
In Asia washrooms have a shower and drain in the floor. It’s great 👍 get a rubber mat or little wood platform if there’s water on the floor
Talked the an RV dealership about these. They said they lost so much money on them because no one was buying them so they were basically giving them away at 25k a pop. Which is what they should be sold for anyway
What's funny in junior high, will always be funny.
Has none of the iconic style of the aluminium originals, and is vastly overpriced. Yet another company trying to cash in on past success by building an overpriced product with a few "tech" features.
That price made me smile and feel better about restoring my 77 gmc
Looks like a rickshaw from the front. I like it.
I like it very much
Man I've been married for almost 20 years,if I could afford this,my life would be transformed. I never made more than 20k in a year but it's nice to dream you know.
You can get an aluminum fifth wheel for less than that, complete with a slide. I know the downside on other trailers is the roof and sidewalls don't last as long, but you get a lot more trailer for the money.
wooo Liked for the matching RachelRay Cookware!
it would be better if it was a car rather than a trailer.
It would not run.
A good price
Doors on the back yet awning is on the side. Also windows facing forward so you'll have a nice view of the back of your pickup.
Freedom and wealth. Key word wealth.
To be honest, It looks like a luxury auto rickshaw 😂😂
Nice review, I hope you like it for that price. but I'd like to see a comparison with a Scamp 16' or even a 13' (without bathroom). The Scamp 13' can be pulled with a Subaru type car. With bunks it can sleep two young kids and two medium adults, I've seen on RUclips. The Scamp 13' is under 15k I think, and hard to find used, and takes a while to order. I am not affiliated with Scamp, I just want one! I realize with any of these small campers a family of four has to spend a lot of time outside, so chairs, an awning on the trailer, and perhaps a fold our gazebo would be crucial. But on the bright side, I see folks AirBnBing these and that could bring in some ROI.
For 45000 dollars you could buy ~500 hotel rooms. You could probably get 2000 shared room AirBnB’s too.
I've already done a walk through of the airstream Nest. The aisle is cramped and the rear door is awkward. The 16' Bambi has a MUCH better layout and is open and airy compared to the claustrophobic Nest. I would purchase the Bambi any day over this dog of a trailer.
this is insanity?! how can anyone say anything good about a $45,000 camper thats only 16ft long and more cramped than my girlfriends fiat. anyone can go out and buy a 30ft long trailer with an actual bed and shower for $15,000 - $20,000. the only reason why you would ever buy this is if you are clinicly insase.
Air Streams have longevity and hold their value, that's partially the price point for this brand, I'm guessing.
Try driving a long trailer in NYC or San Francisco.
@@jimpachihaihachima1753 why would any one want to go camping in NYC or san francisco. better question where can you go camping there?
At least he fit in the bed... Sideways
Yeah, definitely for rich people that care more about looks/brand than functionality, etc. You will note that the thing he seemed the most proud of is the looks he gets. He may have to stand in water when he pees at night but man, it's worth that and $46k to see people admiring what it looks like. Or at least in his head he things they are admiring it. You can also tell that the price ITSELF was part of the selling point to him. He even kind of brags about it as he cooks up his steak and eggs. It is a way of showing off his wealth. I guess if it makes you happy and you have money to burn then more power to you.
Miami from 1982 called - it wants those teal cushions back.
I thought it would justify the price with a lower row weight, so more vehicles could pull it. Nope. It’s 600 lbs heavier than the sport! Airstream needed to come in 1000 lbs lighter and $10K cheaper to make this concept work. Nobody is going to be restoring a FIBERGLASS airstream in 30 years because none of them will still be around. 2/10 will not buy.
Fibreglass falls apart in 30 years? How do you explain all the Boler trailers that have been around for 50 years? Or Corvettes from the 50s, or even the fibreglass shower in my basement?
There are several manufacturers of fiberglass trailers that produce quality products for half the cost. It is not even offering state of the art heating/ac and electrical equipment . For that price, solar and lithium batteries should be standard.
The Nest looks like my horse trailer! I'll stick with my Canadian made Escape.
46K!!!!!!!! A fool and his money are soon parted
the price tag is a futuristic matter for me too , it is a very nice trailer though : )
This thing is definitely for those that care a LOT more about exterior looks than... well, anything else.
Like so many other campers, it's grossly overpriced. My DIYer sister bought an old (but solid) 16-footer for $2500 and completely re-did it herself for less than $1500. It's beautiful and much more attractive.
Good Job Roberto!
I would really like one of these. You buy it new and years from now sell it to me for around 5k. The basecamp is impressive. I will be watching craigslist for one at a good price.
We now have 500’ sq ft $90,000 tiny homes and $46K 16’ Airsteam trailers. This trend will continue until enough people realize what happens when you pass gas in a structure smaller than the box your refrigerator came in.
really drives home the importance of quality, high volume evacuation fans...
You nailed it . That's why you need to invest in real estate now . The cost of labor and materials is crazy . Look at hotel /motel cost, prices for storage sheds, the clues are all around .
Feels like a hermit crab: Taking home anywhere.
Thank you for the straightforward review
Also the video was well made
And nice seamless movement
Throughout the video looking forward to some more reviews

"Travel Trailer".. There is a single word for this in the rest of the World : CARAVAN!
I’ve seen 2019 models online for around $30k; still overpriced but not terrible lol
It’s like a modernized scamp
That price is nuts. If u made that a little bigger with double axles it would be perfect, but then it would cost 70 g's.
This is very like the much loved German Eriba caravans. Google the Eriba Puck for one of the models. They are pricey but not to this extent.
Seems like a lot of money for that type/class of trailer. Ime debating on a small one myself to tow behind my Jeep on weekend excursions. But 45 K is a bit unreasonable, perhaps I'll look into the 9K version.
yes, all the charm and warmth of a hospital room.
Wow, I bought a used Coleman Pop up for $800 last year and put another couple hundred in it. I have 2 king sized beds, plus a table that converts to a full size bed, an indoor kitchen area with sink, 2 burner stove, fridge, hot water heater, furnace and outdoor 2 burner stove.
I want one but with the Chevy instead of the Ford. It's a pretty good deal when you figure ya get the truck for free 🤓❗🇺🇸
I might be missing something, but I think the Airstream Bambi comes in at around the same price and weight. I really do not see the advantage of this camper.
Damn. I was looking at this, or the base camp, for my family of 4: me and wife and 2 young daughters. I love the airstreams and how long they last compared to the rickety mobile home looks of the MUCH cheaper options. Problem is, for the price, you’re not getting much space. I don’t like the idea of showering over the toilet.
Almost 50k for a plastic trailer? Ppl lust after Airstream cos there quality And will last forever, this junk will be in the scrapyard in 10 years.
Hard to take a person seriously with so many grammatical and spelling errors.
Serious or not, You'd pay 50k for this abomination?
It's fiberglass, not plastic. This "plastic" is what Boeing 787s are made of. Much higher quality than anything made out of metal
never looked at airstream in the 70s 80s 90s or naughts did you. Now they're owned by Thor, which after Jayco, is the most craptastic RV manufacturer on the planet.
@@thegeneral123 not saying you have aspergers syndrome, though you did manage to overlook the points of contention that were being pointed out, to focus on concerns with spelling, and that suggests that there is some narcissism and was hastly written coupled with a slight elevation in cortisol levels. The point of the matter is that its heavily overpriced for a lunchbox that has some wheels and a shovels worth of grains of sand thermally formed into windows. It's not even worth the taxes on 50 grand.
Casita, much better value, Oliver better trailer for the money..
Why didn’t you season the steak?
You simply need a Land Rover to pull this 😂
46000 dollars for a trailor you have to lay on the bed diagonally to fit airstream should be sueing this guy for showing all it's flaws
$46k ??!!! Are you kidding me. That is craziness.
Iconic name. Cheap modern build.
My father paid 21,000 for a brand new four bedroom two bath house with separate living, dining and family rooms as well as a walkout basement. How old does that make me? Old enough to know better than to pay $46,000 for a one-person trailer. DFA.
Casita, Trillium, Bigfoot, etc. are probably closer to 25 grand bare stock, and add extra adds more expenses, right?
All the features sounds like it make for couples who wants to do it without shaking the nest too hard to wake up the neighborhood.
Hey, it looks great! But for the price, it's just not offering a lot. I can't live in it for more than a week with that kitchen, and the bathroom floor drain is a problem that would get old fast. Airstream can do better.
I recently went to an Airstream dealership to look around. I knew I couldn't afford an Airstream.
My wallet went into cardiac arrest upon seeing the price tag on a USED single axle baby unit. I bought a brand new conventional trailer for half the price that was almost ten feet longer!
Not worth $46,000 sorry...
You could buy a low mileage Jeep and a used Casita for that much if you're patient
Friends don't let friends buy a Nest. Too small, and there have been massive quality control issues. For HALF the price, you can get an excellent and roomy lightweight all molded trailer - an Escape 19.
It's futuristically boring.
Let’s clear something up, Airstream didn’t design this trailer. They bought the assets of this product from another company and then added their own touch to it. So in reality this isn’t an “Airstream”, it’s an Airstream branded trailer.
I got a survey from Airstream about the Nest before it was released. One of the questions was about the price, and one of the answers was, "It will be very expensive." Yep. Grotesquely overpriced.
Crazy price!
Let's see... This, or a model 3 and a giant oled tv?. Tough call. 😂
I like it, but that price tag is wow
$46,000! 😮 😯 Do you know what type of camper I could build in my garage for $46,000? I could make a double decker nest and give you back $15,000.
Nice, but the Armadillo trailer is the same size, sleeps 4, and has many more features.
