As a massive Star Wars fan, I feel like I have to point out that the Death Star should be disqualified. According to your system, any station that doubles as a starship isn't included. According to the in universe classification system, any spacecraft equipped with engines and a hyperdrive (as the death stars were) is a starship. Therefore, Space Station V wins by default.

It's funny that they mentioned the rotation for artificial gravity for 2001's station while completely ignoring the fact that in B5 even human ships utilise rotation for gravity in living spaces. It's not as overt that B5 itself does it because it's 5 miles long and probably about half a mile in diameter that's a very large mass turning so it looks incredibly slow..
"We're not including the space station from Interstellar because it's used as a spaceship." First entry in the video is used as a spaceship. Last entry in the video is used as a spaceship. WatchMojo reasoning.
+Silvershock Nicktail Agreed. The Deathstar is used as a spaceship. Instead of being in orbit about a planet or placed in a fixed location, as is the definition for a space station, the Deathstar moves about like a cargo ship. So... Interstellar should definitely have been included at at least been #3. Either that, or remove the Deathstar and make Space Station V the #1... which would have made sense. It is the most realistic looking one of all.
Takua Nuva I'll give them DS9. It can be moved, but only with holding thrusters, and that's a significant operation that needs Miles O'Brian to do his thing. All space stations have positioning thrusters, but like DS9 they're not designed to be moved. The Death Star, on the other hand, has FTL capability.
Actually the weather at he's into hyperspace which is a dimension in which all matter is accelerated. Thus it does move rather than teleport. Think of t like the flash' s speed force.
I am pissed off again. WatchMojo said that they ARE NOT LISTING ANY STATION that doubles as a STARSHIP!!!! Power ranger Lost Galaxy Space Station is a mobile vessel and so is DEATH STAR!!! You better get your definition right next time.
+4life4win I was wanting to say the same thing and was looking to see if anyone else thought the same about those two. Also, the criteria switches throughout the top ten. What makes something "top"? That it is a "good" (functionally) station? Then 2001 gets an honorable mention for rotation and Babylon 5 moves into the top two at least. Is it that it is "iconic"? Then 2001 is back and gets a promotion and several others drop off the list making this a top 7 at best. Is it that it is an actual attempt at Science Fiction? Then the cartoons drop off the list (if they weren't gone already). I've typed too much. One last thought about Power Rangers and Death Star... Space stations are relatively stationary...come on, it's right there in the word itself. They orbit stuff and pretty much stay there in orbit. You can find them cause they are NOT moving around much.
+Jerod Haskins Agreed. There have been many lists about sci-fi characters or technology that are total nightmares BECAUSE of the definitions that they set up. Cyborgs and Giant robots list are few to be named, that made my blood boil. They butchered many great lists in order to fit those, that technically aren't belonging there.
+4life4win Incase you didn't know ALL REAL space stations actually have a means to move by them self by releasing large amounts of gas to cause two forces to push against one another effectively making any space station able to adjust it's position so technically if the space stations on this list cannot move on their own then lets face it they're just space junk!
+4life4win They also Honorable Mentioned the Satellite of Love from MST3K which by the later years was doubling as a starship thus sorta violating their own rules.
Thank you, THANK YOU, that you did not forget Babylon 5, and that you placed it higher than DS9. You could've featured scenes from later seasons though, specifically the massive battle in Severed Dreams.
+AKAHimself Actually, it looked much better when running in syndication then when it was released on DVD. Unfortunately, the special effects shots were stored in low-res and were degraded further when blown-up to 16X9. As far as being "only average for the time", they were far better and more dynamic than any of the Star Trek series up until "Enterprise".
+AKAHimself Are you sure they revamped the CGI? the reason B5 hasn't had a blu ray release is because it would require new CGI elements. I'd sure love to see that happen though, it's one of the best tv shows ever made imo...
EuVieites She didn't say anything was wrong with it, just that it was good to see B5 placed above it. I would agree that as much as I liked DS9, B5 was by far the better show. It is just overlooked sometimes as it doesn't have the Star Trek brand behind it.
Well, I just didn't understand if there was any kind of rivalry between both shows. I mean, I was glad just with the fact they didn't forget DS9 (which is my favourite). I didn't even care about the position they gave it xD These lists never have too much sense for me anyway, so I was curious about her comment.
@Thelondonbadger While not to everyones taste. It most definitely is Sci-Fi in the same way that star wars is. Both are basically about space wizards that do the impossible. Neither are considered hard Sci-Fi like Star Trek, Battlestar, or many other productions featured in this video. But just because they lean heavily on fantasy elements does not discount the science fiction portion of their genre. That would be like saying aliens doesn't count because it is a horror flick. Or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is only a comedy. It is actually difficult to find a production that only fits into one genre. Can't think of any I have ever watched, read, or played. The idea honestly sounds quite boring. You couldn't even satirize just one genre because that would require at least 2 genres at minimum.
@Thelondonbadger Actually can't discount the argument about LotR. Its very true. But again. Why can it not be sci-fi. Yes the screwdriver has what seems to be limitless potential. The rules of the whovian universe are very much nonsensical. But there are rules and scientific principles at work within the series. No matter how nonsensical they may be. The villains of the week trope is one used by tv shows and movies for years. Including shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, and countless others. Besides standouts like the Borg, they generally have some evil scheme that is far more complicated than necessary. They monologue. They do something stupid. They lose. It is trope because so many people use it. Back to sci-fi. Based on Websters Dictionary: -fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component Fantasy -imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters Both Star Trek and Dr. Who follow both these definitions. They each lean further to either side. Star trek does have strange settings and grotesque characters throughout all iterations. And Dr. Who most definitely has a large scientific factor as an essential orienting component. It doesn't matter that it is not as grounded in reality as many other sci-fi shows, books, or games. The idea that just because something is not your cup of tea doesn't change the genre. It just means that you may not like it. No need to attack it for not fitting into your view of how something should be categorized.
@Thelondonbadger So I took the definition directly related to the actual art of fantasy writing. You took the definition of the mental process of fantasy. Two separate, though connected meanings. I have not been arguing that Dr. Who is 'pure' science fiction in the same vein as Star Trek, Battlestar, Babylon, etc. That would be quite stupid to say. Dr. Who is a science fiction fantasy. The argument that it is only fantasy is just as stupid. To disregard all the science used in the show off hand just because it is not as rigid and unloving as other shows is fallacy. Star Trek falls into this same category time after time. They disregard established rules and laws of science in their universe on a whim of the writers. Babylon 5 did this on occasion. So did Stargate, Farscape, X-Files, Quantum leap, and many others. If you want to talk about the space magic that cannot be explained. Star Trek(Q is the most egregious but not the only one by far) Babylon 5(The Greys, the shadows, and the psi core) Stargate(Ascended beings and all their shenanigans) Firefly(River and her weird powers) Where is the line. Yes Dr. Who is most definitely more fantasy than Sci-Fi. But science fiction is still a major focus of the show. Even though the writers love there convoluted science with more loop holes than basket of curly cue fries. It is still a form of science with rules that can be followed if you pay attention. There is a reason that most book stores combine their sci-fi and fantasy sections into one. It is because the line between the two is so arbitrary and can be quite interchangeable. Some high fantasy books have a lot of DNA from science fiction with how much they analyze the world and how it works. While other futuristic science fiction books will have a more fantastical look at the galaxy. With the outlook you look at Dr. Who with, many of the stories considered as some of the best of science fiction would not be able to fit in that genre if you looked at them with the same lens. Just because a piece of work is not 'pure' science fiction does not lesson the fact it is still science fiction.
+Rowan J Coleman Thank you!!! I could have sworn that was what was going on. It's been a while and all I remember is them going from the bottle-shaped one to the ring-and-needle design in JLU as opposed to building a lookalike between the first's destruction and Green Arrow's tour of the newer facility.
+Rowan J Coleman You think they should have catched onto that when watching the clips they choosed to use, especially as in the last scene they show where the flash says "do you have any idea how corny that sounds" is his answer to Superman suggesting they should call themself "the Justice League". You would think whoever choosed that clip would atleast have tought trough that what was said and possibly come to the conclusion that they didn't name themself the Justice Leauge several seasons after the show started.
And considering the film was made in 1968, one year before man ever stepped foot on the moon, it was waaaaaay ahead of it's time. It really should have been Number 1.
I can't believe you forgot this one: Space Station Nerva. From the Fourth Doctor Doctor Who episode "The Ark in Space". And it's earlier incarnation in the episode "Revenge of the Cybermen", Nerva Beacon. Which takes place a few thousand years earlier. Now that is one cool space station.
8:48 According to the novel, the space station in 2001 (Space Station V) simulated an artificial gravity of 1/3 that of Earth, which is not that of the Moon (1/6 G). The reason being that since it was a stopover from the Earth to the Moon it gave occupants a chance to slowly adapt from a full 1G to 1/6 G or vice versa.
One of the earliest colour TV attempts at a space station was in Doctor Who in the early 1970s. Nerva Beacon in the episodes called 'Revenge of the Cybermen' was pretty good for the time when you consider camera technology they didn't have - especially the corridor scenes. The same set also featured in 'The Ark in Space'. Bit of nostalgia!
Curious... Did you actually watch the entire series - in order? Judging this series from just a few episodes is like deciding how good a novel is from reading only a few random pages. Babylon 5 remains one of, if not the best sci-fi series because it was written so well, and almost all by one author. He planned out the entire 5 years ahead of time and included a myriad of story arcs that ranged in scale from personal stories of individuals to epochal history spanning millions of years. These story arcs also ranged in length from episodic arcs to ones that took literally years to pan out, with some of the most satisfying pay-offs you'll ever see. Multi-dimensional characters who change as a result of their decisions and events that occur around them. I encourage you and anyone who hasn't seen this series to give it the time it deserves. Start with Season 1 Ep 1 and watch every episode. Is it perfect? Of course not. Nothing is. But it really is one of the very best series. Deep Space 9 owes much of its success and improvement to Babylon 5. Any similarities you find are rooted in B5, not the other way around. And I'm glad. Because of B5, DS9 became the best of the Star Trek series, which up till then were mostly narrowly episodic. The breadth and scope of B5's storytelling was picked up by DS9. B5 won two Hugo Awards and was nominated for more. It has earned the respect of anyone with the patience to experience it as it was designed to be - a novel for television.
I love love love DS9. I thought B5 was a ripoff until I watched it in the 3rd season. It was like a drug. The writing and the story arc is way better than most of Star Trek's episodes. This series was freaking epic!
Rather than one colony or a group of colonies, how about the colonies in general? Heck, I wouldn't mind if they replaced that Marxist tripe Elysium with these.
Watchmojo: The Death Star is the biggest space station ever built! Me: (cough, cough) Death Star II (Cough, cough, cough, coughety, cough, cough) sorry I must have a cold (cough, cough) Starkiller Base
DerpySquid 1 Starkiller base was a planet that they put really big gun on/in. If it is a space station, then you could strap engines to an asteroid and call it a spaceship.
From physics' point of view, unless the context doesn't explain the simulated gravity, the circular shaped stations (like station V in 2001 A Space Odyssey) is the only realistic one at least in theory and that's why Kubrick was a genius and that station should be nr 1
@@juanucedaperez9614 At least until you got to see 1. The external view of the docking bays as the Falcon was being pulled in, 2. The individual building structures on the surface of the Death Star during the battle at the end of the film.
They really need to do a part 2 of this video and add the following space stations, Drax's Space Station from MOONRAKER, the Space Station from the movie GEOSTORM, Thunderbird 5 from the TV Series THUNDERBIRDS and SPOILERS ALERT - the S.W.O.R.D Space Station shown in Spider-man Far from Home
Good to see you mention Solaris (1972) but in Stanislaw Lem's original novel and the 1972 film the research station hovers in the atmosphere of Solaris above the oceanic surface and is therefore NOT a space station per se. It only becomes an orbital facility in the godawful George Clooney film (2002).
The Death Star is not "planet-sized." For crying out loud, you even showed the clip where Obi Wan is stating "that's no moon," because they thought it was a "small moon." In addition -despite being the Death Star II design being the best space station ever- it should be disqualified since the original Death Star was taking hyperspace travels and moving at sublight speeds as well.
I don't agree with #1 Death Star. A space station is one that stays in orbit. The Death Star was mobile. And, we don't see anything about the design. Somehow, it carries a bunch of small ships. Somehow, it has a planet destroying weapon. A spherical shape makes sense for structural integrity, but since all other ships in the movies have what look like some sort of rocket-type propulsion, and there are no rockets visible anywhere on the Death Star - it's a no-go. Your #2 should be #1.
So, Leo Lim, you're saying Lucas not only didn't know what a parsec is, but also didn't know what a space station is. I wholeheartedly agree. If the Endurance was disqualified for being a spaceship, then the Death Star should also be disqualified, as its sole purpose of destroying planets requires traveling from one planet to another.
I agree!! TB5 from the original series, 2004 movie and Thunderbirds Are Go DEFINITELY deserves at least an honourable mention - not only for her looks but also her abilities!!
9:32 - that's not LEGIONS STATION - that's the JMC Red Dwarf. Legions station is part of the Red Dwarf Universe but they Didn't show it. Plus they need to update it to the new station that talks to THE UNIVERSE
What about all the space stations from Voyager lol? The Caretaker's Array, Suspiria's station, Baraht's supply depot (on the border of the Necrid Expanse), Tash's catapult, Jupiter Station, McKinley Station, the Hirogen training station, the massive Starfleet Academy facsimile station built by Species 8472, and need I mention the Borg Unicomplex. And last but not least the massive Talaxian conversion of an asteroid. And I don't even know if I got them all. And I do believe one was built by the Ba'Neth but it doesn't really count since it was obscure even when made visible(ish) lol.
Say what? The fact that we have 2001 and Star Wars which both offer very realistic looking space stations then "nothing" ever deserves to be hire than number three! Babylon 5 isn't even good computer graphics, it looks like cheap cgi from the 80's while 2001 was giving us realistic looking space stations in the 1960's and Star Wars doing likewise in the 1970's!

Although Mojo didn't exactly keep to their own constraint of not including ships that double as stations, Atlantis isn't a station - it's a capital ship. Just a very large one...
It's capable of staying in space, where it could be classified as a space station. The first entry was capable of traveling, so the fact Atlantis can do the same doesn't really disqualify it.
so true. a space station is just that: stationary, in orbit around a planet, designed as a docking port for space going vessels. while it may have defensive capabilities, its primary function is as a refugee, never a weapon. to call the death star a space station is just ignorant.
Caseytify - It's an artificial structure, orbiting a specific location, designed to be inhabited. I think that makes it a space station...the most massive and ultimate of space stations, but still a space station.
Well, it more just floated in space, because the Strangers couldn't take light, thereby, it was never in orbit. However, I like the concept and remembrance of that epic flick.
As much as I liked DS9, if I had to choose a single Space Station from the Star Trek universe it would be the orbital base (Spacedock one, if I remebrer correctly) from Star Trek III - The search for Spock.
100% agree. Earth Space Dock in ST3 was (in my opinion) the most beautiful station ever seen on screen. It's a shame we didn't much more of it. A few more appearances in the films and some reuse in the series is all we got.
Deep Space 9 is one of the coolest because it houses a number of races, can dock around nine ships, massive, and the weapons are beautiful. And the most important, IT HAS A BAR!
Sadly, the ESD probably got bumped by DS9... not wanting to include two stations from the same show. And while I like the ESD as well, DS9 had 7 seasons of use, a lot more lore, a lot more shown, than the ESD. And that said, here are some others missing that ought to have been mentioned at the least, like the Valley Forge from Silent Running.
You mention Deep Space Nine, as you should, but I think you need more mention than an image of the large Starfleet space ports that swallow whole starships as if they were tiny little toys.
If all you want to do is destroy a planet, then sending a 100m diameter rock at half the speed of light would suffice, but Death Star was intended for other purposes. The Emporer had fears of an attack from some unknown source.
+Max Thomassen It's on a plantet not floating in space. So I don't think its considered a spacestation. More like a city ship since it is a city and capable of flight.
Usually you guys and gals are spot on, but this is one GIANT mistake: this list is a joke without the incredible Space Dock from the Star Trek franchise. This thing is big enough to house multiple star ships INSIDE of it, that alone should have been enough to make this list as #2. Come on people, your better than this!
I'm a Star Trek fan and B5 fan too and have watched these Space Station many times from before :) I have almost all 5 seasons of Babylon 5 on DVD discs here in my apartment, but I hope the store and the shop I bought B5 season 1-4 from will get season 5 too, which I need for my collection :) Space Station in Star Trek DS9, which was Terok Nor was Cardassian teritory and belong to them :)
Great chose! The was shown in almost all of the episodes, though you had to look through periodicals and illustrations to see the guts of the station. Most of what I remember were cutaway and explored drawings, which seem to be a very popular artform in Britian. The more recent iteration of T5, in the live action movie, was an interesting and updated addition. What was so fascinating about T5 was it's communications system. It was like the NBA meets GHQ with Batman's near omniscient computer listening to ever conversation, cry for help.WOW! Thanks for the post and reminder.
Death Star! also When talking about space stations, I completely forgot about Montressor Space Port in Treasure Planet, even though it was an honorable mention, still I find it cool that it was mentioned.
Death Star 1st, together with Babylon 5, both represent the civilisations they have been built by, one serve destruction, the other one serve the peace.
Ryszard Nanke It only managed to destroy one planet. Just one. The I.K.S. Rotarran had a higher kill count than that to be honest. Sure it was intended as WMD but it really did not do much of that.
Nope. Babylon 5 is number 1. That is my informed opinion. But that is also based on my enjoyment of the series. I might accept the Death Stars as second place. DS-9 was the best Trek but it was an accident because came out as an imitation of what they thought B-5 was going to be, ironically.
Some missing consideration: Cooper Station (Interstellar), Thunderbird 5 (Thunderbirds), Tycho Station (The Expanse), The Ark (The 100), Drax's lair (Moonraker), The Peak (from animated series S.W.O.R.D.), Restaurant At The Edge Of The Galaxy (Spaceballs), Knowhere (Guardians Of The Galaxy), Niska's Skyplex (Firefly), and Space Station 76.

+Silvershock Nicktail I agree with you. After all WM has no idea about Sci-Fi in ANY FORM!
Takua Nuva I'll give them DS9. It can be moved, but only with holding thrusters, and that's a significant operation that needs Miles O'Brian to do his thing. All space stations have positioning thrusters, but like DS9 they're not designed to be moved. The Death Star, on the other hand, has FTL capability.
ok depends on how you define it i guess ^^
Needs to be updated to include the massive floating Starbase "Yorktown," from the movie Star Trek: Beyond (2016).
As much as I like Deep Space Nine as the entry from the Star Trek universe, the massive Spacedock shown first in Star Trek III absolutely dwarfs DS9.
But Spacedock doesn't have the best thing ever-JULIAN BASHIR!
Yeah Starbase 1 is most definately the largest space station in the alpha quadrant. It can fit the entirety of a galaxy class starship with ease.
Death Star is a ship as well, so by your own rules should not be included like interstellar.

+SnapeMaster The Death Star is no moon...
+Lovi Poekimo What's wrong with DS9?
EuVieites
She didn't say anything was wrong with it, just that it was good to see B5 placed above it.
Well done for including Satalite 5 from Doctor Who as an honorable mention!! DW doesn't get enough praise sometimes XD
Based on Websters Dictionary:
-fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component
Fantasy
-imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters
Both Star Trek and Dr.
Star Trek(Q is the most egregious but not the only one by far)
Babylon 5(The Greys, the shadows, and the psi core)
Stargate(Ascended beings and all their shenanigans)
Firefly(River and her weird powers)
Where is the line.
If you talk about Watchtower 2 it's probably best to show some actual footage of Watchtower 2
+Rowan J Coleman Oh good, I thought I was the only one who noticed that...
Kayjai97 Yeah I don't get how they didn't catch that in editing, especially considering that they show the first Watchtower getting destroyed.
+Rowan J Coleman Seems they forgot Watchtower 2 had a bigass fusion laser mounted on it, as well.
+Rowan J Coleman You think they should have catched onto that when watching the clips they choosed to use, especially as in the last scene they show where the flash says "do you have any idea how corny that sounds" is his answer to Superman suggesting they should call themself "the Justice League". You would think whoever choosed that clip would atleast have tought trough that what was said and possibly come to the conclusion that they didn't name themself the Justice Leauge several seasons after the show started.
hmmm... about time to rewatch B5... :)
The quality of the design and construction of 2001 Space Station is amazing !
And considering the film was made in 1968, one year before man ever stepped foot on the moon, it was waaaaaay ahead of it's time. It really should have been Number 1.
So power rangers are actually starship troopers?
+SlyRubberDuck I saw that too, and was pissed.
+SlyRubberDuck that was stupid as F!
TheNarrator Please explain have you watched starship troopers?
SlyRubberDuck not your comment. That they used the visual design from starship troopers. My comment was a bit misleading.
TheNarrator Ah ok thought you were implying something else
I can't believe you forgot this one: Space Station Nerva. From the Fourth Doctor Doctor Who episode "The Ark in Space". And it's earlier incarnation in the episode "Revenge of the Cybermen", Nerva Beacon. Which takes place a few thousand years earlier. Now that is one cool space station.
Very glad to see a shout-out to the Satellite of Love. Didn't expect it. .
The Borg Unicomplex is another great station
unimatrix 0, I was just thinking the same.
Nathaniel Brown yes
and much larger too! although it is not inhabited by humans.
The Cylon Basestar is as huge as the Death Star, for sure
I was shocked to see that the Borg had 2 great stations as the transwarp hub and the unicomplex :(
Haven't watched it yet, but the Death Star is definitely #1.
The force is strong with you
No, stating the obvious is no gauge for one's connection to the force.
+Ista Dav actually, the Death star is da real bomb at the party. Get a bat and start beating the sweets outta it!!!
XP
+StarWarsROTJ1983 Yeah but why??? When it's such a failure? twice
+StarWarsROTJ1983
The death star is going to be #1 because the staff at mojo are morons.
The death star is not a station, its a large ship, it moves.
I am a huge Star Wars fan and have been my whole life, but my #1 station will always be DS-9. Long live Sisko!
Let me see that thong!!
Glad to see B5 ranked so high.
as long as B5 is ranked higher than DS9 I'm happy =) I like both shows, but B5 is BETTER. by far.
@Findlay Robertson Highest TV station!
DS9 would take it out in a few minutes. 5000 quantum torpedoes can do that easily all the while their phasers would handle the B5 mini x wings.
Valley Forge (Silent Running 1972)
USS Cygnus (Black Hole 1979)
Con-Am 27 (Outland 1981)
all good examples, but Valley Forge, cargo ship. USS Cygnus, long range exploration ship. Con-Am27 a stationary mining operation.
The Death Star, as it's capable of interstellar travel would qualify as a ship, not a space station...
This. Same with the Power Rangers 'station'. That was a colony ship.
Yeah, Spacedock made a video on that issue.
8:48
According to the novel, the space station in 2001 (Space Station V) simulated an artificial gravity of 1/3 that of Earth, which is not that of the Moon (1/6 G). The reason being that since it was a stopover from the Earth to the Moon it gave occupants a chance to slowly adapt from a full 1G to 1/6 G or vice versa.
Where's Thunderbird 5?
One of the earliest colour TV attempts at a space station was in Doctor Who in the early 1970s. Nerva Beacon in the episodes called 'Revenge of the Cybermen' was pretty good for the time when you consider camera technology they didn't have - especially the corridor scenes. The same set also featured in 'The Ark in Space'. Bit of nostalgia!
Babylon 5 is a highly underrated series...
agree to disagree
It was alright, seemed a bit hokey at times...
B5 is pretty highly rated. Which means you're right - it should have been VERY highly rated!
Babylon 5 was my favorite.
Although seeing B-4 going back through time was pretty cool!
Love that the Power Rangers troops are using helmets and armor from Starship Troopers!
i just saw that! so... does that mean they are in the same universe?
@@Doggie_San No, just was the cheapest option from the prop rental place. LOL
Deep Space Nine is my personal favourite. Followed by by MST3K's Satellite of Love. 😁
Side Seven from Mobile Suit Gundam. Certainly one of the more realistic depictions of a large scale space habitat.
i'm more thinking of either a baoa qu from the original or Jachin Due from gundam seed
Rather than one colony or a group of colonies, how about the colonies in general? Heck, I wouldn't mind if they replaced that Marxist tripe Elysium with these.
I am so so so glad that they put Solaris in the list
Watchmojo: The Death Star is the biggest space station ever built!
Me: (cough, cough) Death Star II (Cough, cough, cough, coughety, cough, cough) sorry I must have a cold (cough, cough) Starkiller Base
* *cough cough cough* * uploaded septembar 1 2015 * *cough cough cough* * other stations out there and bigger
well starkiller base was tecnichaly a planet not a space station.
Natalia Virtanen What exactly defines the line between the two?
You must have forgotten about the Dyson Sphere in St:TNG Relics
DerpySquid 1 Starkiller base was a planet that they put really big gun on/in. If it is a space station, then you could strap engines to an asteroid and call it a spaceship.
From physics' point of view, unless the context doesn't explain the simulated gravity, the circular shaped stations (like station V in 2001 A Space Odyssey) is the only realistic one at least in theory and that's why Kubrick was a genius and that station should be nr 1
It's not as sexy or as powerful a pop culture icon as the Death Star. The simple fact that we all knew it was going to be number one is reason enough.
Indeed!!! Even the Death Star looks cheap against the Space Station V.
@@juanucedaperez9614
At least until you got to see 1.
Henry A oh the book. It's like reading a dream. So good.
The Solaris film with George Clooney is not quite the same story as the earlier film, but it is a very good SF movie.
Good to see Babylon 5 mentioned, normally overlooked
The Death Star is not "planet-sized." For crying out loud, you even showed the clip where Obi Wan is stating "that's no moon," because they thought it was a "small moon." In addition -despite being the Death Star II design being the best space station ever- it should be disqualified since the original Death Star was taking hyperspace travels and moving at sublight speeds as well.
So what it travels? It's a battle station.
@@theemperor1379 0:43 For the same reason they excluded the one from Interstellar.
3333glen it officially called a space station in in the movie.
Thunderbird 5
And that would be?
Look up thunderbird 5 and tell me
+Christian Jones you seriously don't know what thunderbird 5 is?
I agree!! TB5 from the original series, 2004 movie and Thunderbirds Are Go DEFINITELY deserves at least an honourable mention - not only for her looks but also her abilities!!
Absolutely, TB5. It needed to be on this list.
What about Moonbase Alpha (Space: 1999)? They had a fleet of 'Eagle' Transporter spaceships. My favorate show in the 70's
Don’t forget Deep Space Station K7 from “The Trouble with Tribbles”.
An honorable mention for the Venture Bros made my day. Thank you. (And Doctor Who).
babylon 5 deserves more than #3
Say what? The fact that we have 2001 and Star Wars which both offer very realistic looking space stations then "nothing" ever deserves to be hire than number three!
Babylon 5 isn't even good computer graphics, it looks like cheap cgi from the 80's while 2001 was giving us realistic looking space stations in the 1960's and Star Wars doing likewise in the 1970's!
the 2nd Deathstar must have finished Galactic insurance companies.
😂😂😂😂 fucking good one mate
I'm glad at least one of the many Dr Who Space stations gets mentioned
Babylon 5 was great as well! :D
Yes!
+Jan Rullmann "was", indeed.
One of the best ever!
Bad haircuts and weird clothes, great TV show.
Jan Rullmann I really miss B5
Not a bad list. But seriously, nothing from MS Gundam? The space colonies in the UC timeline are awesome!
There was the Big Wheel from "The Conquest of Space". Then there was the revolving space station from the TV series "Men Into Space".
You shouldn't exclude the Endurance if you include the Death Star.
Also, Cooper Station from the end of Interstellar should be on this list!
If you were to update this I think you would have included the city of a thousand planets from valerian pretty high up
Pity the film was underwhelming.
Gateway station was also featured in Commander blood for Dos. It was I believe used in Lost starfighter I think...
Babylon 5 was a political, religious and culture symbol for the entire galaxy. Nothing beats it in my view.

How could you not include Drax's space station from Moonraker?
That totally should've been a honorable mention.
Elysium reminds me of the Star Trek episode "The Cloud Miners" because of the extreme separation between the haves and the have-nots
Come on, we all knew what #1 was going to be.
Ohhhh; it's the Death Star. What a fuckin surprise :/
+Jackson Waring Oh no you spoiled me I could never imagine it being the death star

+ahhculdee Yep, even though it's a ship.. which *should* (by their own rules) disqualify it.
+fuzztsimmers 3 Yes, because the featured station of a seven season major show is just a mention. smh
I would have gone with Thunderbird 5 in this list
So glad DS9 wasn't overlooked. If you've never binged DS9 in order, i HIGHLY recommend it. It really is am amazing show!
Moon Base Alpha Space 1999.
A space station on the ground?

Atlantis ( Stargate Atlantis )
Although Mojo didn't exactly keep to their own constraint of not including ships that double as stations, Atlantis isn't a station - it's a capital ship. Just a very large one...
atlantis is a flying city not a ship or station.
It's capable of staying in space, where it could be classified as a space station. The first entry was capable of traveling, so the fact Atlantis can do the same doesn't really disqualify it.
They already have the moving Death Star in, thus there is no reason to not include Atlantis in the list.
That one is an epic one, though it can travel around the galaxy, so im not sure if it's a station x)
The cool space station from the movie Geostorm was pretty awesome too.
Sorry but number one would be a Dyson Sphere like shown on Star Trek when Scotty was on.
so true. a space station is just that: stationary, in orbit around a planet, designed as a docking port for space going vessels. while it may have defensive capabilities, its primary function is as a refugee, never a weapon. to call the death star a space station is just ignorant.
Just saw the new Star Trek movie, that is new best station.
+John Dziki I look forward to watching that. thanks.:)
Nope. A Dyson Sphere is a world, not a station.
Caseytify - It's an artificial structure, orbiting a specific location, designed to be inhabited. I think that makes it a space station...the most massive and ultimate of space stations, but still a space station.
The space station from "Heavy Metal" 1981
There were two! The one in the "Captain Sternn" segment, and the "Oooo, good landing, man!" one at the end of segment "So Beautiful and So Dangerous".
Dark City (1998) was actually a giant space station. Should be on the list
Well, it more just floated in space, because the Strangers couldn't take light, thereby, it was never in orbit. However, I like the concept and remembrance of that epic flick.
2001's is still my all time favorite, followed by the one in Elysium.
As much as I liked DS9, if I had to choose a single Space Station from the Star Trek universe it would be the orbital base (Spacedock one, if I remebrer correctly) from Star Trek III - The search for Spock.
PS: You got a glimpse of it at 06:20 in this video.
Starbase 12 from Bridge Commander
Absolutely. That's a space station if I've ever seen one.
Yeah but deep space 9 more recognizable.
And the most gorgeous chief medical officer-DOCTOR BASHIR!
they really scraped the bottom of the barrel for this list. Considering all the other Space Stations they could have used.
+KingreX32 ESD from Star Trek should have been on this list, it's beautiful
Not to mention Dyson Sphere, you could fit every station on this list into a dyson sphere.
The Citadel of Ricks
Sadly, the ESD probably got bumped by DS9... not wanting to include two stations from the same show. And while I like the ESD as well, DS9 had 7 seasons of use, a lot more lore, a lot more shown, than the ESD. And that said, here are some others missing that ought to have been mentioned at the least, like the Valley Forge from Silent Running.
Deep Space Nine! Fuck yeah!

STARGATE ATLANTIS ????!!!!
I think the same!!!!
not a space station
mase lane it has multiple uses
Daniel De los Ríos still not a traditional station
mase lane and the Death Star is? both are movil, big and has weapons. the only difference is because of the size, Atlantis CAN enter a planet.

They need to make a part 2. Number 1 is the Space Stay of Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.
What about the Drax Space Station from 007 Moonraker?
And Moonbase Alpha from space 1999.
That was a fun station, and a fun movie :) Thank you Sir Roger Moore...
That wasn't a space station. That was a place James Bond took over to become his outer space shag pad with (no joke) Dr. Goodhead.

Sure it was intended as WMD but it really did not do much of that.
The one marked as Legions station in the Honorable mentions isn't a station at all.. Its the mining ship Red Dwarf from the TV series Red Dwarf.
Where is Thunderbird 5?? It was one of the first...
Yeah it SHOULD be somewhere between 10 & 1!
Sorry, but B5 will ALWAYS be number 1.
I agree.
I also agree.
as number 1 space station and number 1 show made
that's right, DS9 would never have happened without B5 to copy.
My favorite is The Alpha intergalactic space station from the movie Valerian and The City of Thousand Planets.
I can't believe this was skipped.
@@mortenbrandtjensen6470 It wasn't skipped. This list was compiled in 2015, but Valerian and The City of Thousand Planets came out in 2017.
Nope. Babylon 5 is number 1. That is my informed opinion. But that is also based on my enjoyment of the series. I might accept the Death Stars as second place. DS-9 was the best Trek but it was an accident because came out as an imitation of what they thought B-5 was going to be, ironically.
Compared to Babylon 5, all others are honorable mentions ;)
