The round by round, modular structure of boxing scoring means that you can have a really close, competitive fight and have it wide on the cards. It's similar to tennis, but there is no controversy in tennis because points are clear cut. You could have a set where every game goes to 10 deuces, every rally contains 20 plus shots, the set lasts over an hour, but one guy wins 6-0. Same in boxing. Surely the aim of the scoring is just to arrive at the right winner.
Great analogy. I think close fights are hard to score, just look at last weeks fight, most had Usyk winning, but a few in boxing had it a draw. You can have two ex world champions sit together and watch a close fight and they will have different opinions on who won or if it was a draw.
Exactly right. Just because its a close fight doesn't mean anything. One guy HAS to win a round. Even if the fight was super close, that doesn't mean technically all 12 rounds could be won by that fighter who boxed better.
Great point and comparison mate. The fact is based off the judges interpretation of the system and rules means that we will ALWAS have this debate for any close fight we see. Unfortunately.

I am Scottish and I wanted josh to beat catterall but unfortunately catterall was the dominant fighter and definitely won , fair play to him he fought a good fight and deserved the win 👊

I'm Scottish and have just watched it again in mute and last night I had Josh or maybe a draw, today I think It could genuinely went anyway but the scorecard from that judge needs explaining cause it's happening far too much and this is fighter's careers and they are short,Catterall was robbed last time and that win would have changed his life and career more so than last night
Regardless of who you think won this fight its about time the judging starts to be held accountable!

How were those scorecards "disgraceful"? Josh was amounting more pressure but his lead hand was terrible tonight he was getting caught with so much. It was not a close fight, yes Josh came back in the second half of the fight but Jack was by far the cleaner and more proficient boxer tonight

Catterall's own promoter admitted the cards were way wide; DAZN's house commentary (Tony Bellew et al) agreed the cards were way wide. It was not only Arum.

How I scored the fight, I felt I had to give a couple of then close rounds to taylor to not seem biased, Catterall battered him

It might've looked different in the arena. Josh applied pressure, but Catterall was deffensively sound, slipping and catching a lot, while landing much heavier shots.

i dont think it was a close fight. I had it 8-4 for catterall. He landed the eye catching shots and boxed beautifully. Josh taylor gave a good account of himself, but no controversy here.
Pretending it wasn’t close or that Catterall dominated Taylor is pure sympathetic tongue rimming. Yeah jack won convincingly at least 7-5 if not 8-4 at best but to say josh only won 3 rounds? What we’re people watching jack looked completely gassed in rounds 8/9/10 and Taylor was taking it to him n Taylor won at least 2 rounds out of the first 7, in my opinion it came down the championship rounds and jack caught Taylor In round 11 hurt him badly and won round 12 as well. At the end of the day the right man won but it wasn’t the cake walk these guys are pretending Catterall punched him self out throwing 6 punch combinations for 6 rounds then Taylor took over

Being Scottish I wanted Taylor to win but to me Catteral won, just not by 9 rounds to 3. I had Catteral winning by 2 maybe 3 rounds, not by 6 😂. The right man won at the end of the day, great fight, would be a good trilogy, just can't see Taylor managing to break him down.
There were 2 winners in that fight. Jack and all boxing fans ❤

I had £100 on Taylor mate, definitely think Catterall was 5-1, maybe 4-2. Catterall definitely won the fight.
Fatigue from 8-12 made it closer, whenever he let his hands go Taylor had zero answer and worse still for an alleged great fighter 🙄 but if Cattrall doesn’t improve his cardio he ain’t beating any elite at 40

Judging needs to be brought into the 21st century! They should be in a soundproof room, on their own watching on tv to get a complete picture of the fight. And scorecards should be shown after EVERY round for full transparency 👍

The whole boxing industry needs a shake up. Put monitors in the gloves (It can be done) that measure impacts in a specific and small area of the gloves. Then, let the computer be the judge based upon punches thrown.

Not one Taylor highlight shown in the first 6 rounds then only highlights shown from Taylor were 50/50 exchanges. Jack won but it was close. Watch the fights without commentary. Media are outrageous

Josh won, the bias and need to right the wrong of first fight is making everyone talk shite. Commentary was going mad for Catterall misses and silent for Taylor hits.

Cattaralls defence is top drawer. Very hard to hit cleanly which must have frustrated Taylor no end. Very awkward style which led to many head clashes but the right man won regardless of the scoring!

Thought it was a cracking fight the right man did win thought them body shots was taking its toll on catterall in the 8th he looked hurt and zapped a little but I think who ever paid to go watch that performance from both guys got they moneys worth
117-111 was a disgrace. I scored it a draw but could see one or 2 for Jack. To only give Taylor 3 rounds. You don’t know what you’re watching. The commentary was very biased in Jacks favour. I wanted Jack to win but the scoring is appalling.

Josh was always pushing the fight but wasn't landing many significant strikes. Jack was connecting and pinging Taylor's head back numerous times. The right man won but a 117-111. Maybe not.

7-5 to Jack imo. He gassed a little in the middle rounds. But overall he landed the cleaner punches and won the rounds he needed to. Great performance...🙌🏾

Either way it shows cateralls level, he gets absolutely dominated on the world level.
There is no scenario in which Taylor won the first or second fight both where clear wins for Catterall I understand managers,trainers, and fighters being disappointed but just watch the fight back without prejudice it was a good fight with only one winner.

I had catteral by 2 rounds. Taylor can’t fight at that weight anymore. He looked done before the fight. Catteral looked fresh and ready to go.
Josh would have won 11 and 12 but he took the fewer but heavier shots. If he moved his head off the line after throwing it would have been closer

This narrative about "wide cards" was always gonna happen. It's all just PR to try to rescue Taylor's reputation after the absolute robbery in the first fight. They're trying to claim the same happened here to Taylor, but when you watch the fight back, you can see Taylor barely landed anything of note on Catterall (outside of the couple rounds in which Catterall gassed) and Catterall absolutely battered him.

It was 5-1 after 6 maybe 4-2 to jack but from there, Taylor took over in a major way, changed the tide of the fight and these people don't even know how to score a fight, the amount of 10 10s they give out flippantly when it is a 10 point MUST system for a kick off
