- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- This is Peugeot’s finished 9X8 endurance racing Hypercar, and yes, there’s still no rear wing. Peugeot reckons it can generate enough ground effect with clever under-body aero alone. Pretty impressive considering the 9X8 is a 671bhp endurance racer that weighs just over a tonne…
The 9X8 conforms to the ACO and FIA’s Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) class and is four-wheel drive, with a 2.6-litre twin-turbo V6 powering the rear wheels and a bespoke, high performance electric motor on the fronts.
Join Top Gear magazine’s Tom Ford for a look around the wingless 9X8 at Fuji Speedway, and find out more about the exciting new Le Mans Hypercar race series that has already attracted entries from BMW, Alpine, Ferrari, Porsche, Toyota and more…

Always liked Peugeot's car designs. Definitely a beautiful machine.
The 9X8 looks so alien compared to the other cars on the track. Well done Peugeot!!!
Its slow tho so
@@ishmamchowdhury45 Its not slow.
671bhp? Tardy.
@@_stoupa2_397 bop caught it up but its still wayy below par
2023 and 24 will be such big years for prototype racing in both IMSA and WEC. So many brands all with distinct designs, and hopefully much closer racing and competition. Exiting times ahead
Eudrance racing is shaping up too be more exciting then F1 with all these manufacturers coming in.
Got my tickets booked for Le Man next year😁
Don't get too excited. Petrol were forecasted to hit £25 a gallon in 2024. OH GOD, even rewriting that price gave me chills.
Last time I've been this excited for a Le Mans 24 was in 2015, when Porsche, Audi and Toyota had that titanic battle for a win. There was Nissan as well, but I rather not talk about how that one went
@@pedroneves4465 Long boi
slight correction, LMdH has to use a chassis from another manufacturer (ie Multimatic), for LMH the car manufacturer themselves can manufacure their own chassis
I was just about to point that out 🙂
And "La Mon". 🤬
@@cookedit and Alpeen.
Yeah, it kind of insults Peugeot to say they took the easier cheaper option
I was just going to say that! It would've been nice to have a presenter who knows a bit more about endurance racing. Nothing wrong with this guy, but it was clear he didn't know much about this topic, which can be forgiven given Top Gear specialises in road cars not motorsport, let alone endurance racing.
Definitely one of the top 5 best looking race cars in decades.
The livery makes it look really bad. I saw an edit of it with the 905 colors, it was awesome.
Definitely agree. Livery looks good on it as well IMO.
@@KepleroGT Definitely disagree the black and grey tone suits this beautiful machine, a touch of red and nice subtle lines.
I love the fact that the rules have allowed the cars to be so different while in the same class. Hopefully this isn't a repeat of the Nissan entry from a few years ago but a real success. WEC looks like it could be really interesting next year.
It's a shame they didn't continue that nissan project after the 2015 disaster, the concept definitely could have been much better if the team had kept developing it
It already isn't a repeat of nissan solely because of them skipping le mans, as well as the vast amount of testing they've done.
@@billyjov yep. For me honestly the GT-R LM NISMO is amazing to look at. Also its FF.
@@billyjov It was so horribly wrong as a concept. Ben Bowlby seemed to think he knew better than every other race car designer; the advantages he thought he saw were vastly outweighed by the huge number of compromises it required.
Peugeot actually knows how to win the whole thing though, unlike Nissan
Je pense que l'on peut tous se réunir sur un point : cette voiture est MA-GNI-FI-QUE !
I am so excited to see Peugeot and Ferrari back in the WEC!! 2023 is gonna be SOOOOO GOOD!!!!
By the way, it’s the LMDh’s that must pick from 4 chassis’s which are based on LMP2 chassis’s whilst LMH doesn’t. Those 4 P2 chassis’s are :
Dallara
Multimatic
Ligier
Oreca
Please don’t spread misinformation for new fans coming into our wonderful world of WEC & IMSA.
its crazy that they get the main difference between the LMH and LMDH completely wrong
Correct!
Bad journalism
It’s astounding how far top gear has fallen. I would be disappointed if any random RUclips channel I watch did a review of this car and got something so fundamental wrong. I feel unable to trust the journalistic integrity of top gear any more. At least when it was the three idiots they actually got the facts right still!
Hi mate, I’m looking to get into these categories for the upcoming years, to be clear who builds the cars then? The teams listed or the manufacturers?
Looks so much better than all the other Le Mans hypercars
Yup! This along with the Glickenhause imo are the two of the best looking LMH cars on the grid.
Nah. Ferrari 499 is out now and looks better.
Ikr
@@HG504X I said, "in my opinion". I wasn't stating a fact. I saw the Ferrari 499 and I still think 9X8 and Glickenhause are prettier.
That Fezza us badass
I'm so happy Peugeot is getting back into the game properly and taking it seriously
I love this car... and I love that a manufacturer takes risks... congratulations Peugeot 👏👏
The LMH manufacturers do NOT have to pick a chassis, that would be the LMDH cars...this was a major reason ferrari chose to develop an LMH, as they wanted to design the whole car.
9x8 is a tie fighter compared to other cars on the track, so unique looking
You mean TIE Interceptor, right? 😂 A bit of a geek moment but a TIE Fighter is a run-of-the-mill suicide machine whilst the Interceptor is the Empire's hot rod superior dog fighter. When Rebels see a squadron of them, a sense of dread usually follows.
I love Peugeot! I had a 307 and now a own a 3008 GT. They made beautiful designs and tech cars. The next one wil be a 3008 GT Hybrid.
Amazing that THIS Car Shows that You can build a FAST Hybrid Car that weighs under 1000 kg. 2023 is going to be a Great Year for Racing almost like 1989 and 1992 was in the Past.
well the 3 fastest hybrid LMP1s of old made even more power than this (nearly 1000hp each), and were even lighter
amazing looking car, but don't know any resemblance to group C. These cars are heavily restricted.
I'm really looking forward to the future of endurance racing, by 2024 it's going to be amazing
9:37 IS GLORIOUS I LIKE THE LIGHTS.
"it is necessary to win and it is necessary to be beautiful." correct not just fast but also the way it looks. 😎
I will cry if this beautiful Peugeot wins Le Mans 24
When was the last time we had this many prototype entries in endurance racing? Bring on 2023 indeed.
I mean... 11 cars is the biggest top class ever in WEC (which only started in 2012)
that would be next year with:
2x Toyota
2x Peugeot
2x Ferrari
4x Porsche
1x Cadillac
additionally we might get:
1x Glickenhaus
2x ByKolles / Vanwall
1x Isotta Fraschini
coming in 2024:
2x Alpine
2x Lamborghini
2x BMW
Which would make the grid to 21 (Full Season Entries)
So I'm fairly sure the last time we had a top class this large (at Le Mans) was when Group C was still around
@@Zanion 2023 is gonna be hell of a year!
@@Zanion didn't we have such a big grid during the GT1 era as well?
@@billyjov Don't know
@@billyjov But next year will definitely bring us one of the biggest if not the biggest grid because maybe more teams will join in the following years.
Correction, only LMDH needs to use a chassis from one of the four LMP2 manufacturers, LMH does not have the same restriction.
Thanks for the video. Nice one!
cannot wait for all these new LMH entries to duke it out with each other. Looking forward to this 9X8, as it's the most unique looking car of the bunch.
Thanks for this. LMDH and LMH is going to be Epic
The LMH cars can only have one ajustible aro device. Most teams chose to do a wing as theirs, but Peugeot chose to put it in the spoiler I believe.
Could be a great tactical choice because of the very long straights of Le Mans
Peugeot 9X8 is LMH car and they make ther own chassi. LMDH has 4 chassi suppliers
Yeah that was a bit of mixup... The regulations are admittedly pretty confusing to casual fans, but this isn't helping.
@@clemsiemckenzie9799 search LMH vs LMDH there’s a few videos that do a very good job of explaining the differences. Keep in mind the age of the videos as some manufacturers have dropped out since this class started last year.
Loved that walkaround. I could really see Tom Ford's face through out it.
More of this on wec and European Le Mans series! People need to know about these races. So of the best races Iv ever seen the last couple of years more people need to know about these classes. good I’m depth talking tho👍🏻👍🏻
Nice to see Motorsport coverage. Keep it up.
Peugeot going crazy....what a car..
Great Video, very educational. Would love to see more of these.
They got one thing wrong though. LMH cars have unique chassis, while Imsa's LMDH manufacturers are the ones having a choice of four chassis to use.
I love the fact that there will be more manufactures for 2023 but the lmp1 class is the only cars to give f1 a fight
Peugeot car is definitely the most beautiful of this season. Great design. Well done.
Great to see a lot of car brands taking interest in WEC Hypercar class. I always have been a bigger fan of endurance racing than F1.
Tom Ford is brilliant - as good quality as I've seen. Keep it coming.
Its well worth looking at the LMP1 Peugeot from a few years ago, Some really good looking cars and the sport has really missed the team.
This really is awesome - something a wee bit closer to a road car makes so much sense.
Nice vid thanks
I think you've confused some of the LMH and LMDh rules together. LMH doesn't demand that you use an LMP2 chassis as a basis; that's only IMSA-LMDh rules (which also uses a spec KERS on the rear axle). The WEC Hypercars (Toyota, Peugeot, Ferrari) use bespoke chassis and an electric front axle.
Beautiful
Take It Easy playing in the background. Love it
Crazy how many details they've got wrong.
Sums up how confusing LMH/LMDH is 😂
looks amasing
A small correction. The point about using a chassis from one of four manufacturers only applies to the LMdH rules, not the hypercar rules. Under hypercar rules, the teams can build the chassis as well.
Great film!
Top Gear giving more attention to WEC is promising and awesome.
Not WEC, Peugeot. If they paid attention to WEC they would have mentioned they finished 7th and 20th due to oil leaks.
@@TheOfficialOriginalChad If it brings attention to Peugeots WEC effort, then it brings the attention to WEC as a side effect.
never feels right clicking on a video like this and seeing it called Top Gear
What car love the split diffuser no need for a rear spoiler 😍
It looks sleek 🔥
Is this the guy from Fifth Gear? Good job
So I wasn't the only person who recognised him 😁
The front design and square headlights is reminiscent of the 505, that's what makes it look Peugeot
It’s nice to see Tom on Top Gear.
Excited to see more competition in WEC and especially at the 24hr of Le Mans and such.
2023 will be the first year I will try and watch the entire season
IT HAS MANY FRUITS 😃 OF ENJOYMENT! #LOVELY PEUGEOT!
That car looks good 😮
Enfin un truc qui déchire 🎉
I like car journalism talk about budgets, maintenance, reliability, durability, and experiments.
variety in racing 🥵🥵🥵
THAT'S NICE
Can't wait for the real racing next year.👍👍👍
wow I haven't been updated tom ford is in top gear now
damn this gets me excided for next year
it’s time for endurance to finally be back to where it should be. on top. 2024 will be huge.
I love this car and the idea that each manufacturer’s car will have its on look 👌🏾
Awesome looking car definitely getting hot wheels of it 😊
fantastičan pežo
god damn thats one fine lookin thang
Beautiful speedtail
It's going to be quick on the straights
Fuji is my favorite track ever
did not realize the wookie is on top gear! good to see his face on tv again!
I feel this is a winner in many aspect and will save upper end sports car racing. Reduced cost alone is monumental and the fields will be huge by 2025, I'm finally excited again.......the 80's GTP and Group C being the best IMHO.
I am sure people have already commented, but if not allow me. There are two car build formulas LMH and LMDh the “h” does not stand for hybrid, it was never explained what it was. Within WEC all cars be they LMH or LMDh are called Hypercars, and in the IMSA competition they are called GTP. LMH cars can build their own chassis and be 4WD, and have a lot of freedom when it comes to the engine. LMDh cars, which the Peugeot isn’t, it is a LMH car, must use either a Dallara, Multimatic, Oreca or Ligier chassis and use the stock hybrid system which powers the rear wheels only. Aero for both LMDh and LMH cars is restricted, and is tested in the wind tunnel by the governing bodies.
the shade hes throwing at f1
Loïc Duval and Jean-Eric Vergne casually walking in the background 8:19.
I'm actually very excited for the new era of Le Mans. LMP1 just never clicked with me.
Best looking car out there, no contest.
Nice
lalamon gotta race em all!
really can't wait for WEC next year
I literally saw this car being tested at Monza!!
I love it. He’s interviewing a French team manager at a racing track in Japan and they’re playing the Eagles in the background.
Eagles in Japan! I never would have guessed
Tom Ford? That's a blast from the past...
You know, I've always liked Tom Ford. He's aged very well too. I've also always liked the actual journalist side of the TopGear production, I used to have mag subscriptions.
But given all the money, all the access and all the experience... Tom still didn't pronounce Alpine correctly. Then said Balance Of Power regulations, no, BoP is balance of performance because they don't just consider power. They can add or remove weight, change aero etc.
The Ika Musume plushie got me haha
Correction here 1st off it’s a new class not a new series, the WEC is a decade old at this point but LMH is replacing the top class of LMP1 and 2nd LMDH has to use a spec chassis from 1 of 4 manufacturers but LMH can be bespoke
Looks so good without a wing
Don’t you mean wang?
Really really want to see this car in IMSA hopefully
I hope this kind of regulation will bring out some good competition. Because instead of saying "Here's what you can use, make the fastest car." and the company with the most money/best engineers wins, they say "Your car is supposed to have this much power, can produce this much downforce and needs this kind of drag, now do what the hell you want with it." While it's sad that engineers can't really create some incredible, complex and outside the box technology for a performance advantage they will probably have to optimise other stuff. I'm escited to see what all this will look like at the end.
Does anyone know approximate lateral Gs and downforce levels of these new LMH???
I just love it when french people speak english.
4:14 has me rolling.
the Peugeot is the only one REALLY respecting the spirit of the class, design speaking
Because due to BoP there's no real point in going crazy with the design when you'll be handicapped back to the performance of the more standard designs.
Le mans 2023 sera à Peugeot 🇲🇫
디자인 미쳤다
As a French, seeing this Peugeot and Alpine racing is just awesome. Btw, love the HEAVY baguette accent of Peugeot head. Even me couldn't understand s**t
That is the longest Eagles clip in the background I've ever seen without a copyright claim on youtube.
