Well done video. Few side notes for ya.
    1) The Xtera is the same camera, just a different power system on the side, which enabled them to run a more complex video tap as well.
    2) When threading the magazine, you should put it on the take up core first, wrap it around a few times, then go back and thread the sprocket drive. Two fingers sometimes does the trick, but it's 14 perforations showing. If it's too big, you will get scratching on the film from the magazine. If it's too small, then it will continue to click when you go to "test".
    3) That 16v battery solution will kill the low voltage transistors on the main board. I service them for a living and 9 times out of 10 when they come in with damaged electronics, it's from that very battery kit. I've been warning people anything over 14v and it will damage the camera. When those batteries come off the charger, they are 16.5v easily. There is a 14v version available of those batteries, but even that is a lot. I would tell the rental house that they should be prepared for a failure sooner than later.
    4) Displacement magazines are only really used in 35mm cameras like the Aaton 35III. What it means is that the supply reel is "displaced" by the takeup reel. This allows manufacturers to make very small magazines because as the take up grows, it will go into the area the supply is. Very clever stuff. You should watch my video about the 35III someday, it's neat.
Anyway, I'm sure there are more discrepancies, but those are the big ones I noticed. Keep up the good work!

When I worked for the BBC Film Unit from 1989 to 2001 we had this camera along with some Eclair NPRs. Myself I always worked with the Eclair as most of us in the film unit felt it was a better camera. When the film unit started phasing out the use of 35mm and 16mm film (they still use them today) I took my camera with me as the one I had been using was being decommissioned, Mine went into service in 1967 and was used for both news, documentaries, drama and comedies. When I left the BBC I didn't just take the camera, but also the log books.
In the BBC Film Unit each camera had a log book, which showed hours of service and what production it worked on. Mine had been used for 2 iconic BBC Light Entertainment programs for exterior shots. The log books are so detailed they show which episodes, who was the cameraman, director, and cast and film stock.

I have many Bolex H16 and H8 cameras. I once had an Aaton XTR, which I bought from Dennis O'Rourke. I sold it eventually, Nevada I couldn't see any difference in the film quality between the Aaton and Bolex. They were both superb. My Bolex Super 16, with either a Zeiss 10-100 or Switar prime lenses gives results that are as good as it gets. A top grade tripod, (Miller) careful exposure and processing are critical to good results.

The magazine WILL take 100ft rolls on daylight spools. All you do is remove the spindle via a simple screw. I have the Aaton XTR XC model...no electronics at all.....as is my preference. No video tap, no counter (just the mechanical one on the 400ft magazines)...love it

One stipulation could be that using the core take up will mean you'll need something other than the original 100' box to store it in, since it will no longer fit. The Eclairs had a more convenient system in this reguard.

holy flashback! so fun watching the tour of the camera; I shot so much film with this camera between 1984-1991. One thing , I'm not sure if it gets mentioned , is that the Aaton was a lot quieter than more widely used Arri 16SR . I think this was because everyone (including me!) would use the 16SR on music videos and they would be run very fast for slo mo ( 75 fps was top speed).Running cameras at these high frame rates all the time would eventually make them noisier...the Aatons tended to be used more on documentaries (and were frequently privately owned) and so rarely were run above 24fps keeping them quieter.Much better cameras for dramatic work where sound was super important.

Incredible camera and an excellent presentation. I remember years ago an ad from Aaton in film magazines with Jean Luc Godard. The camera was advertised as a small 16mm camera. Cannot remember the name. Very nice job Noah.

JP built a camera called the 35-8 which was specifically built for Luc Goddard, at his request in the 1970's. It used 200ft loads of 35mm. Some years later, JP decided to make a production version and after some hub bub, they did and it was called the 35-2 and 35-3 depending on the year. Very cool, all be it very "french" 35mm cameras. I owned one for a while and they were pretty sweet. Check out my channel if you wanna learn more about Aaton cameras.

Brilliant, incredible camera. Too bad the company went the way of Mitchell and was liquidated by a French court in February 2024 because of debt, partly related to costs incurred by trying and failing to produce a digital HD and Ultra HD camera. Glad you did this video!

Excellent video! I've always loved film, even when I was very young I loved the 'dots' and 'movement' of things like titles at the cinema and could never really explain why. I man like age 8 I loved seeing that at the cinema. It's amazing to learn about how film cameras work and your content is very in depth!

They do make much smaller cameras like a Beaulieu R16/2016 and Bolex EL/EBM which are small 100ft daylight spool cameras designed for travel.

Technically you can remove the feed spindle and use 100ft daylight spools, I have done that on my LTR and XTRprod but it is definitely loud and not really the best thing to do.

    I know nothing about cameras
I have a question : did they sell mags, in addition to the camera itself ?
Considering one need to load mags in a special room... the shooting would be limited to 11 minutes if one only has a single mag with the camera.

Very nice video. I just realized I like all of this stuff I had no idea of or that it even existed. It's interesting to know there is something in between the large hollywood million dollar cameras and the serious home market. And the clever engineering blows my mind. I still don't know why i find it so fascinating.

    • @CinemaRepository

These were "hollywood" cameras at the time of manufacture. The Aaton XTR and the German counterpart the SR3, were used for several major feature films such as Hurt Locker.
Also, the most expensive "film" cameras in the world, were around 150k USD when new. You can buy them today for 50k easily.

when charging, don't you need to throw the film OVER the roller in the receiving compartment? I believe that there will be better engagement with the toothed drum if the film is first passed over the roller on 5:58

    • @AnalogResurgence

No, based on the manual itself the film threads under that roller.

    • @CinemaRepository
      @CinemaRepository Год назад

The Aaton XTR Prod was sold from 1994 - 2005 I believe. They continued to make them during the production of the Xtera which is the same camera, but with a different side mount electronics package for the video tap and camera assistant. They were sold "as new" until Aaton went out of business in 2010/2011 due to blowing all their resources on a digital camera that never came to be. The name still exists today, but it's a digital audio company.
