Thank you for that ! It’s definitely got it’s own characteristics, sure isn’t the cheapest way to shoot natural environments, and you do have some misses sometimes but for me it’s worth it
I would like to understand how much of this awesomeness depends on the camera and how much is down to your skills in post production. A lot of other K3 footage sucks, whereas this has the right balance of sharpness and film look. Also, how did you stabilise the footage so well ?
The camera had faults but as do all k3’s to an extent, mine were not hugely problematic though, so the camera preformed Nicely. I really just take my time when shooting and editing, and I reject anything I feel doesn’t look right or doesn’t fit into a project. Which is hard to do at times especially when it’s so expensive and you only have limited usable footage left to replace something that looks bad in an edit. Hence why I and most don’t put out much very often haha Also Occasionally I use the built in stabiliser in Final Cut, but it can look pretty bad if you use it too often or it’s too strong. But that does help especially with gate jitter
So good... thanks for putting this together. Exceptional. Looking into economical 16mm options for music videos. About ready to pull the trigger once I have a grasp on it and enough research done.
Hi - stunning work my friend. If you don’t mind my asking - what lens are you using? I recently purchase a K3 Ultra 16 with bayonet mount which may not have been wise? I’m hearing not many cine lenses are made for bayonet mount. I just wasn’t crazy about the M42 mount because I don’t intend to use any still photography/Pentax lenses with this camera. Thank you for your time!
Thank you ! I had a few different variations of this camera and had the best results from the original 4:3 bayonet version I used for this film. Lens selection is limited but typically I like running a good zoom and a wide lens for it gives me less choices to focus on. Personally I loved the bayonet camera I had. Good luck with it !
@ssimple- in a world of 4k , 6K this is stunning work! The sound design is stellar. I love this look, and now I'll see if I can get a 16mm camera for my next project.
If I remember correctly I believe the entire film was captured with the meteor lens, I always felt it was a much better lens for the price then people give it credit for
I generally shot first, review and edit the entire project, then go back out either at the same location or similar locations as per shot to record the audio and do alit of mixing to find a balance across the edit
Hey! Just found your channel. This video is insane. I just ordered an Ultra 16mm K3 so I’m going to keep an eye on your content to give me ideas. Parts of this video and your most recent one remind me a lot of the film The Thin Red Line. I’m curious, how do you decide which film to use? Like what do you use to measure the exposure rating?
Appreciate those words mate ! I genuinely load film up depending on the conditions outside, if it’s raining and I want to shoot I’ll load up something like 200-500T, Or beach stuff I’ll decide on either 50-250D Just depends on how the weather is looking the week ahead before I shoot something. Also I only use an iPhone light meter app, and when I’m unsure based on those readings I’ll lean towards over exposure to be safe 👍🏼 Hope that helps, appreciate it!
Hi SSimple, I like the 8/16/33 mm look. But is there cheap alternative? Getting the footage developed and digitized is hardly affordable if you want to shoot a full length analog film (and dont want to use pseudo-analog digital filter.)
Unfortunately not, it’s definitely worth trying first before you buy a camera if you can, Personally I love this way of shooting, but some don’t, especially due to the cost. Filters can look accurate, but the look isn’t what’s important, the method and idea behind it is more important and worth the cost (for me at least) Good luck !
Appreciate that Olle!, And hanks for the feedback, As mentioned earlier I’m no pro at sound mixing especially with levels and compression, just learning as I go. But I’m Always looking to improve upon my understanding and ability’s with each project I tackle. Thanks for letting me know 👍🏼
Definitely super 8 for ease of use and price, but 16 can give a much cleaner steady image. I typically jump between the two regularly as I feel they both have a place, for me though it depends on the project I have in mind. Hope that helps !
Such a beautiful video, perfectly capturing the Aus vibe - I'm wondering if you had to do much troubleshooting with the K3? There's so many varied filming results on YT (yours being among the most lovely), I wonder if the individual camera units are different in sharpness, gate jitter etc..
Also wondering what shutter speed you are using for 24 fps? I read that the shutter angle of the K3 is 150 degrees making the 180 degree double frame rate shutter rule not work.. is this right?
I had a few different k3 cameras and each had their own personality. Some i had a lot of stressful issues with. But the last one I had which was used on this project preformed the most reliably and was the most consistent. And I can’t remember the exact shutter angle but it wasn’t off enough to notice or that I had any issues with. Hope that helps! And thank you for the positive feedback❤️
I hate to say it but some of it is luck. And I had a lot of bad luck before I ended up with the camera I used for this… Unless you can find a seller who can show you footage they have shot through it, it can be a gamble with the k3. But if you can find one that is solid and works well. Hold onto it, they can be great !
Amazing editing and composition. And those colors! It's incredible that a $500 dollar camera can create such quality of picture. I'd say I personally like the look of this than the images produced by modern 35mm digital Alexas. Film is unbeatable. I'm in the process of finding a 16mm cam for my travel channel. I ride in cars and soon will be doing it in motorcycles. I use digital cameras and color grade the footage to look like 16-35mm film, but it's not the same. I wish these cameras and film were cheaper. Look forward to see more of your artistic work!
Cheers mate, I feel most modern tech is undoubtably convenient and incredible, but lacks imperfections and character. If this was good enough back then, it’s good enough for me now.

thanks Anthony, I do use a tripod most of the time as I'm usually waiting quite a while for the right moment, but I also wanted to keep the frame mostly still. I'm glad you you enjoyed it !
@@ssimplefilms amazing. Do you know why your footage looks so much better than most? Color grading? Or just overexposing it the perfect amount? I want to do everything I can to replicate this quality lol
Definitely not a smart decision today shooting film over digital, but I much prefer shooting this way, it’s a pretty special experience and forces me to think little harder about what I’m doing. It’s just a different kind of tool, a different kind of paint brush if you will 👍🏼
I have a question: Do you overexposed your shots? If yes, how do you light meter your shots? Midtones, shadows, light? which of these i need to overexpose?
I try to overexpose a stop or two if I’m not sure but honestly I’m not the most precise with metering as I’m using an iPhone light metering app, so I do get wildly different results sometimes

Perhaps the most beautiful-looking format ever conceived, the surfing sequence was so immersive.
Never been so stocked to shoot every opportunity I get with this format!
that shot of the surfer through the trees looks a bit like the shape of Australia - phenomenal!
No kidding !
I noticed that also when I was editing it, pure luck hahah
Incredibly beautiful, the 16mm film does so much. Excellent work!

This looks phenomenal. 16mm is a good way to capture the colors of the natural world. Props to the excellent sound work.
