The 49ers went from a 2-14 team in 1979, to Superbowl Champions two years later. It's real sad the Chargers never got to the Superbowl from 1979-81. Could they had beaten Pittsburgh in the 79 Championship game? Would have been a heck of a game. Thank you Virgil for the great content to this game.
@Orn Gorn Actually, the Chargers had a formidable defense in '79 (they gave up fewer points than the Steelers)...The problem in '79 was that Dan Fouts couldn't stop throwing the ball to Vernon Perry. The defense took a downturn when Gene Klein refused to pay Fred Dean and ultimately traded him to the 49ers..
@@Bruce12867 Great comment Bruce, also the Oilers were simply tougher in the playoff game. With Campbell and Pastorini out, the Chargers simply took them for granted ...
1:22:10 Good call by Jimmy the Greek on that NLCS Preview, saying Pittsburgh had the better bullpen. Cincinnati blew the first 2 games because of THEIR bullpen
This 1979 team had so much potential to go the distance. Just completely choked at the start of the playoffs. Shame, because this was probably Don Coryell's best squad in the pros.
Despite a terrible defense in 79, the 49ers had several tough defenders who deserved their rings in 81, with guys like Reese, Harper, Bunz, Board and Hicks ...
Despite a HOF career, DE Cedric Hardman had a bad year for the 49ers in 79, being injured, not getting enough of a pass rush and having problems with other players in the locker room ... He got traded to the Raiders and won a SB in 1980 but Walsh wasnt going to keep him. The Chargers had Dean but let him get away ... a huge mistake.
Great post! Check out Hank Bauer's block on the opening kick off! Comment: The Steelers won all those Super Bowls with the worst kicker ever...Roy Gerela.
Why does this clip include Stockton and Allen talking to other CBS crew members who were working the game during the times when commercials would’ve been airing?

Yes 30/SEP/79 Are you asking because you don't see him playing, or that you don't see him on the sidelines? Played his last game for the Irish in January '79 This is a '79-'80 NFL season He only started for Walsh once or so in '79 I spotted him on the sidelines behind Walsh while Dick Stockton is giving us Walsh's resume. This technical crew is bush league, they never did get the Forty-Niners DBs introductions on screen.
I grew up going to all the games in San Diego. What a great time in life. Thanks for posting this game.
I miss Jack Murphy Stadium !
My two favorite teams. Two of the greatest QB’s ever; plus Winslow and JJ were electric. Coryell and Walsh were offensive geniuses 👍

That playoff win vs. Miami in '81 seaon was epic tho.

I hope more people can listen to George Allen call games from 78-81 ... a great color man in my opinion.

Air Coryell. Back when passing for 4,000 yards was still a big deal. Dan Fouts became the second player ever to do it in '79.
4000 passing and 2000 rushing were big deals.
We'll never see the rushing or rushers we witnessed, not in rest of the time I'm around anyway.
Namath did it in 14 games ...
Joe Montana.......as the place holder on the field goal.....wow!

Damn, I keep hearing the name Al Cowlings wondering if..,yes, its the same Al who drove Juice in a white Ford Bronco in 1994.
No it's the gay white version.

What a waste: these Chargers not even reaching a Super Bowl.
These two teams played in 94 super bowl dude
Of course there isnt you imbecile. I said these two teamd played in the 9 4

The Chargers owner Gene Klein was cheap ... he gets rid of Dean, Jefferson and Johnson !!

He was a pro bowler in 1972 and 1974. 60.1% of field goals made in career. Not a great kicker but definitely not the worst kicker ever.
It took Walsh 2 years to build a dynasty. Completely different team here. No Joe Montana or Ronnie Lott full time yet..
I had moved to Los Angeles then and couldn't keep up with what the 9'ers were doing, so I call this era my "What happened to Joe Reed?" days.
Ronnie Lott was a junior at USC in 1979

I believe it is a direct network recording. It wasnt one I recorded.
A very young Joe Montana on the bench..
Is that a then young man and future Broadcasting Great Dick Stockton as the lead Commentator/Play-Play?
Stockton has called games for over 50 years ...
@@brianwolf6166 In 1979 Stockton was still a "young man" despite being in the biz for 50 years now here in 2020.
12 for 26 in field goals the previous season?? Chuck Noll had too much patience.
George Allen must have been smoking weed thinking the 49ers had a chance.

Yea he was drafted in the Spring of 79 so this was his rookie season.
Montana didn't take over until mid 1980.
