Something about The Eleventh fascinates me. I don't yet know what it is; but I keep 'trying' different recordings.... this one strikes me as particularly well articulated. Whether it's the conducting, the recording, or the performance, I do not know. I only know that THIS is a very special piece of music, and THIS is one of the better recordings of it I have found here. THANK YOU, VERY MUCH.
My personal favorite moments throughout the piece: 28:02-31:44 41:49-43:51 53:55-55:32 As you might be able to tell, my favorite musical moments tend to be big climaxes. That’s not to say that I don’t like the calmer and quieter moments: (the English horn solo from 56:00-58:47 seems to make time stand still.)
I never noticed those accented triplets on the snare part for the climax of January the Ninth holy shit that gave me chills hearing it articulated so crisply
@@CarterFelixOfficialI should be clearer, I meant more so the specific way that the triplets are accented in this recording; I feel like it doesnt come through as well in a lot of recordings
The 'oppression' section of the 9th of January movement has to be one of the most fire but also horrifying sections of classical music ever written. Reminds me of the climax of the 13th symphony's first movement which has a similarly horrifying subject.
Thank you all for 1K views! I started this channel as a simple passion project and didn’t expect it to spread to this many people. Have a nice day everyone!

i played this in the backround, and was on III (Adiago) while my dad was catching our frog with a net, and right when he got it, it got super loud and major
Haitink had the reputation for being reserved and staying to the score. This is an incredibly gripping performance. Maybe the best. Better than Mravinsky's.
I totally agree, but I'm sure Mravinsky knows how to make audiences and musicians feel the music and its composer. He sure knows how to make expression through music.
I don't know what it is with the Concertgebouw's tam-tam but it always sounded kinda sluggish and underpowered to my ears. So not the ideal performance as far as I'm concerned. Although it's certainly better than Mravinsky. The best of the "classic" Russian performances is probably Kondrashin anyway. But I would suggest you listen to Caetani, Järvi or Lazarev.
Don't forget this has a lot to do with sound mixing, when it comes to recordings this is often forgotten, because everyone only thinks about the conductor and the orchestra. @@MisterPathetique
I'm now perusing recordings of the work, after having been introduced to the programmatic massacre, and I wonder if the tempo from 30:23 should be faster, to show the swiftness and brutality of the attack.
I don't hear what you are saying. If that is all you can say, then you are nit picking. This to me is a fantastic recording and trust me I've listened to many recordings of this symphony. Weather it be live or not, to me this is one of, if not the best renditions of the Shostakovich's 11th.
@@lightspeed174wait, something is wrong with timecodes, it was a different time when I commented. 30:55 - tam tam is missing Anyways, this is one of my fav recordings of it as well, i think Haitink is one of the greats

I love the sound of the side drum in those fabulous Concertgebouw acoustics
I think the beginning part of the second movement (starting from like circa 22:00) is also really fabulous. It’s a part I circle back to a lot
I never noticed those accented triplets on the snare part for the climax of January the Ninth holy shit that gave me chills hearing it articulated so crisply

That snare drum is gooooood

Best symphony ever written
Definitely a great symphony, but in my opinion not the greatest. That title would go to Beethoven 9, Mahler 2, or Mahler 8 in my personal opinion
