Caitlin Clark's favorite player growing up was Maya Moore, the four-time WNBA champion and 2014 MVP who played just eight seasons but was so good that many fans consider her one of the greatest of all time. Still, Clark, a rookie on the Indiana Fever, might not have wanted to be publicly compared with Moore so early in her career, considering the added scrutiny such a remark would create.
On Monday night, though, former Iowa women's basketball head coach Lisa Bluder appeared on CBS Sports Network and likened Clark to Moore after the legendary Hawkeyes guard was named the 2024 Honda Cup winner for the top NCAA women's athlete on and off the playing field. "[Clark] is definitely making a difference in kids' lives," Bluder said. "For her, Maya Moore was a huge role model growing up. So now she's the Maya Moore of this generation. And she understands that.
"She understands how important that was to her to get that autograph after the game, to take that picture with her. I just think that off the court, she's so genuine. She's so giving of her time. ... The passion and the joy that she plays with is so special.
While Bluder didn't seem to try to compare Clark's on-court accomplishments to Moore's, instead contrasting their public personas and off-court contributions, the sound bite quickly drew backlash among fans online. "Lisa Bluder really setting Caitlin up," wrote one fan on the social media platform X.
Both Clark and Moore are two-time Honda Cup winners, with Moore claiming the honor in back to back years in 2010 and 2011.
"In our 48-year history, only a handful of athletes have won the Honda Cup twice," said Chris Voelz, the head of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards committee. "Just as she achieved numerous historical firsts in her senior year, Caitlin Clark makes history with us as the fourth two-time Cup winner and only the second to win it back-to-back."
Added Voelz: "With an exceptional class, we are thrilled to welcome her to the sisterhood of all-time greats in college athletics and eagerly anticipate the continued impact of her influence on our culture and the nation's sports community."
Throughout her WNBA career, Moore built a reputation as a standout social activist working to bring attention to causes such as criminal justice reform. She announced an early retirement to pursue her criminal justice work through her non-profit, Win with Justice.
Clark met Moore in person earlier this year and was visibly star-struck to see her hero.
Soon after Clark left Iowa to enter the 2024 WNBA Draft, where she went No. 1 to the Indiana Fever, Bluder announced her retirement, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Clark and Bluder shared a deep personal connection that went beyond the court.

People just do not choose to listen to what is actually being said. If they would just shut up and listen and quit making something out of nothing. She was talking about how little girls look up to her in this generation just like she looked up to Maya moore when she was little. just appreciate this. We talk about women empowerment, but we can never get anywhere if this cattiness continues.

I learned about Maya Moore by hearing Caitlin talk about Maya being a huge inspiration to her when she was 10 years old. She spoke of how her dad took her to Minneapolis to see a Lynx game in person, and how thrilled she was when she met Maya after the game when Maya was kind to her.
Before i saw that interview, i had never heard of Maya Moore. Now, thanks to Caitlin, I've heard of her AND i like her just because she showed kindness to a child fan.

They aren’t similar personality-wise on the court because, even though Maya was extremely confident on the court, she didn’t talk trash. She just gutted players like the assassin she was. I can see Clark looking up to her for how she treated people off the court. I met Maya when she was a sophomore at UCONN and she was an extremely sweet young woman. Very humble.

They’re saying that Clark isn’t anywhere near Maya Moore in terms of being an accomplished player or showing the courage to talk about certain things frankly without giving a canned media response from a media coach, basically it’s them saying “here’s why maya earned that influence that she has” and “here’s what se does with it”.

I also cannot believe people have allowed themselves to be duped by Angel Reese into thinking there is a rivalry between her and Caitlin Clark. Reese is at nowhere near the talent level of CC and has managed to inject herself into the conversation through jealousy, pettiness, and negativity. She doesn’t deserve the status but people fell for her act and now all of a sudden there’s a “rivalry.”
Truth is, there is no one who can rival CC because there is not one woman in the league who can play like her.

    • @Hope...M
      @Hope...M 8 дней назад

@@jjones9822Angel Reese is doing great her rookie year. She's broken a rookie record twice with double doubles consecutively. Clark needs to just get her confidence back. I don't know if it's her coach, could be other players on her team and not on her team not being very inviting, stay at nicely. She's definitely missing three-point shots that are the same distance as what she was making in college. She's not been consistent and she's really actually shot pretty lousy from three point land so far. On the flip side, she's such a great pastor that some of those players can't even catch the ball or they're not even prepared if you notice. If the rookie of the Year were given out today then I would give it to Angel for obvious reasons. That does not mean I think Caitlin won't adjust and come around because she already has been doing this. The problem is in the WNBA coaching, it's hard to get a really dope coach because they're taking salary cuts. It has to be somebody that's got money and is willing to take a price cut and a job change on a whim and a risk. Mark Jackson might be the guy. I've heard his name mentioned and we know what Mark Jackson did putting that warriors team together. I have no idea what that man did behind the scenes to piss people off but he has pissed somebody off. I've heard he made a remark about some headhunt show at the NBA being a certain persuasion dealing with sexuality. Regardless it's obvious the man can't get a job within NBA. Some people say all the players don't get along but there's more players that say they do get along with them then didn't. That's the thing with Jackson going from a job where he's making more money broadcasting into a job where he would make a lot less money. Other people have said oh bring in the USC coach from college. Once again that would be a hell of a price cut in their salary. Phil Jackson coached the Bulls because it was a great offer. He didn't do it as a price cut. We'll see what happens but I will go back and say right now Angel Reese is definitely rookie of the Year but I don't know how many games are left in these short WNBA game seasons

Too bad Clark doesn't have better options than the racist WNBA lesbian league.

The ironic part is that most of the people criticizing here are actually more familiar with Caitlin than they are with Maya.

MAYA MOORE IS CC, S IDOL, YOU IGNORANT HATERS! Remember Maya came to see Caitlin in a game in Iowa. Caitlin freaked out because she loves and looks up to her so there is no comparison. Why can't you all just shut up and let Caitlin play ball? I don't think my daughters and I can watch The Fever anymore. Reese is jealous because Maya Moore likes CC.

The WNBA is so sorry instead of rigging games to make sure they both succeeded their rigging games to make sure Kaitlyn does not succeeded. And that is another reason they left her off of the Olympic team because they do not want her to be successful at this level. We already see it. We already know she’s at least as good as all of them and my opinion better than everyone I’ve watched her play against.
