With a mere 2500km on the clock I couldn't help playing with the wheels and tyres and as with everything 'new' I found there's was heaps I didn't know.

Love the vids on the mahidra mate, was a hilux driver for a long time, used rangers for work - and was looking at cannons until I came across your vids. I’m set on a black edition but I’m told 6 month wait in nsw for any dual cab variant. I’ll wait. It’s just what I want. Really looking forward to see what you do with yours so I may be inspired to do the same. Your judgement is respected and valued- Good on ya🤙

i'm with you on the steel wheel thing Roothy, yeah alloy is stronger outright but a few bangs an they could explode at any time, steel wont do that it just bends....... looking forward to see more...

I had a steel wheel bend the other day on my GU more or less past the point of no return from a knock after a tyre debeaded.. Now it's anyone's guess what would have happened to my stock alloys if that happened but in 4 years I've never broken an alloy and I've spoken to a lot of people who've been all over Australia with alloys.. shit Jason from all 4 adventure had a gu with alloys that went all over aus and my understanding is he never had one break..
Obviously it depends on the quality of the alloy wheel but a well made alloy wheel is superior to steel wheels in my opinion.
Agree with your point John on remote travel, be safe and as sure as you can, the Ma Ma won't let you down.

I looked at everything available in this class. Key start. Roof drip rails. Upright screen. High seats. Uncool by modern fashions but very practical. This looks the most practical so hoping it works out. 👍🍺 stay tuned.

Roothy, they look like a Discovery 1 pattern (89-97) Which is 5 x 165 or thereabouts. If so, the Discovery steelies made by Dunlop back in the day are absolutely bomb proof. Heavy as anything, but indestructible. Could be the go!!
Looks similar but won't fit - I tried that already! Offset oissues too. We'll get something made up I'm thinking.
Hey Roothy, those rims looks very similar to the older boxy Land Rover defenders! Or even the LR series stud pattern.
Looking at my defender out the window makes me want to even bet money on it.

Hi there, good to see that you're happy with the new Mahindra, I was going to sell my second one after all the problems I've had with our dealers here in South Africa, but after I've sourced some parts from a place that has them readily available and imports them I've decided to keep my older pickup, got it fixed up completely and enjoying it every day now, goes anywhere a Cruiser can go with more comfort...
Beauty - and thanks for the feedback. Most of the issues we've had in Australia in the past have been lack of genuine back up - that's all changed now.

Hi John ,I was think of getting 8/16 steel Bands and getting the Mahindra centres welding into them.
Mine came with steel wheels had it for 8 years no problems at all 👊
Steel wheels seem to suit the character of the truck, it’s got a utilitarian vibe to it.

Roothy I thought the exhaust was first. Can’t wait for that. How about a 3 inch straight through pipe. YUMMY 🤤
It won't make a lot of difference due to the DPF that kills the noise.
The stock exhaust is pretty average, especially the flattened to fit over chassis bit. Initial measuring looks like will have to run the pipe outside chassis rails which means modifying/changing side steps - that's what you get with something different but we'll work it out!

Mate don't mind steel at all. Both my road cars have alloy but for what you will be doing steel is fine. Have had to bash a steel wheel years ago and got me home. Really does look good underneath 😉 👍

Interested to see what you do with the suspension. I test drove a mahindra and the only thing I wasn't sure about was the torsion bar front end suspension. I don't know anything about it so couldn't understand how you could lift it. A few people told me you couldn't but not sure if that's right or not.
Definitely can. They ‘wind them up’ Factory farm option has 50mm lift so will try it first - then tune accordingly.

To me the suspension looks a lot like the RA rodeos setup . do they have torsion bars ? if they do wind the front up , replace the springs and shocks , airbags in the rear and let the fun times begin :) , would also recommend changing out those auto hubs for manual locking ones
Agree on all points!!! Especially the auto hubs which apparently are easy to swap back to manual - and I will be.
Looking good with the steelies. Are the stock tyres a 245/75R16?
Should be able to fit a set of Cooper ST Maxx or STT Pros in a 235/85R16 or 265/75R16 without many issues
Yes on size but clearance to front guard is an issue - until I get it lifted and maybe get a fatter offset wheel made. Thanks mate -

The Mahindra stud pattern is 5x160 same as Ford Transit 🤙
If you get in contact with Dynamic Wheels they can have a custom set made for you, they just won't come in until their next container does.
(Doesn't cost any extra from memory)

Yes, very simlar but different offset unfortunately.
one of the alloys on my Torana has a crack so the tyre loses air constantly (currently a rolling shell, not on the road)
Yep, got the same slow leak issue with an alloy on my old BMW motorcycle.
I have never seen someone so honestly happy with a Mahindra like John

Standard Mahindra- these cam off vehicles fitted with mags here in Australia.
i am really looking forward to seeing how you trick the mahindra out. lift it a little, put on proper offroad tires... basic stuff would make it a bit tougher. Wish we got em in the States
Yep, researching all that now - we have very little Mahindra experience in Australia but the basic build is solid and simple and I totally agree - decent off-road tyres, a lift, better damping on the suspension, exhaust and free up the intake - and that's a start - cheers mate.
just did a tough track with the 16in factory tires and steel rims on the highway terain and no issues just adjusted air pressures to suit conditions

Been travelling around Sri Lanka and there’s a bunch of Mahindra 4x4 utes here. They get absolutely flogged by the locals both transporting goods and as ‘safari jeeps’. Agricultural in design but that’s the appeal of them.

Lovin it mate and I get your whole steel wheel thing but I think you are being a bit over the top. I used to be same but I have seriously only seen one failure on a quality alloy rim. Seen others and all have been cheap garbage el budget rims. We also used to only run tube tyres and slit rims and rag tyres in mulga, but I'd never do that again for love nor money. Anyway, I am super keen on this project, I reckon there's a lot to like about the Mahindra, and I am really glad you are putting one through its paces.
Sounds like we've had similar experiences - only ever ran splitties and tubes on the tour trucks. I'll never be convinced on alloys in the bush tho - anyway we'll see how she fares over distance and corrugations!
Replace the auto locking hubs with free wheeling hubs as they fail when regular 4wding, happened to both mine and a mates. Made the change and no problems.

Heyho. It’s an Aussie made Southern Cross from Melbourne- it’s also fifteen years old. Not sure if they’re still in business. Excellent tent. Best I’ve ever had. 👍

The steel rims look like an over sized hilux 4x2 steel rim from the early 90's lol
Tyres ide suggest fitting 235/85/16 mud tyres . Legal upsize & will give you that big more ground clearance & taller stance and won’t lose power compared to wide fat tyres

The wheel pattern is an odd one for sure. Look to South Africa for ideas. I went with 265/75R16LT Brigestone Dueler AT 697's but I need the 40mm lift to stop the minor rubbing. That's next in my build.
Yep, lift first, then tyres - maybe on custom offset steelies....

I have black coyote steel rims in 16x6.5 with a +25 offset from Infinity Wheels on mine with 245/75R16 Falken Wildpeak Mud Terrains… looks superb and way cheaper than an alloy option by a long shot…

John. I respect what you’re doing and the need to change the wheel style but alloy wheels are still a very durable alternative and they still use standard lug nuts. They’re also better looking and lighter I’d think? Steve 🇦🇺

I just can't get my head around the amount of tray overhang ( to the south) behind the rear axle. The only thing you could carry would be the handbags handbag. Other wise the front wheels will be off the deck.
Yep it looks that way but if you put it next to a 79 series the dimensions are much the same - and that's from the spring hangers which is the crucial thing. Having said that I am looking at shifting the diff back a bit later one to get more tray space for a camping set up - early days yet - thanks mate.

When i look at all of the twin cab brands they appear to be similar in rear axle placement close to the back of the cab with excess overhang . Do all of the new vehicle engineers make a mistake like that or do they have shares in the aftermarket chassis extension companies? Cheers.

Appreciate your point of view Roothy... I'm gunna stick with the alloys for now, as it suits me. But I'm going for the BFGKO2's, keeping the standard size on 16" rims..... I'll see how that goes.👍

When the wheels are Steel they are Real. Alloy wheels crack or buckle when you hit a deep hole

I blew out the turbo in mine after 10k kilometers. Also had difficulty getting the rear brakes to work correctly. After working out the kinks ran well, however , dealer support in Costa Rico is less than sub par. Terrible customer service and parts availability.....well non existing.

Yes I bought it. Yes I got a good deal. I would have got the same or better with anyone in return for publicising it. However it had to be done this way because I genuinely want to test it out. So if it fails you’ll read about it, unlike a few chaps in my trade with various rigs - Amaroks?? In Australia? And $100k 79s with less comfort than my 47? It’s a weird world.
Mahindra has great refined diesel engines
It is the quietest diesel I've EVER tested, very economical and lovely down low torque - great motor IF it does the distance - it'll be getting good servicing along the way!

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY I use rubber grease to fit tyres keeps a very good seal and hardly have to put in any air. Try it it works. You only need a tiny amount on beed and valve stem
I've been looking for a new 4x4. Not a ute so to speak but very interested in the Mahindra brand. Been around for a long time...financially stable conpany and a great alternative to the Chinese rivals. Which I'm not too keen on supporting for my own ethical reasons. Mahindra are about the release the new Scorpio in India. It's a bit bigger than a Jeep Cherokee or RAV 4 but it will be available with 4x4 and a low range transfer case.
Probably the only "true" 4x4 in the D segment.
I don't need anything quite as big as an Everest/Prado...so I'm following developments closely. If confirmed for Australia, I'll likely put a deposit down for one. It's probably not going to be as refined as the Japanese rivals but I have a feeling Mahindra have come a long way. At the speculated price point I think it might be a winner.
Yep, India's always been on our side - must be the love of cricket! We're getting a bunch of new models here soon and I'm looking forward to testing their new 7 seater wagon!

No, it's not Milo - but Milo was driven for filming which often meant choosing the most spectacular terrain as opposed to the simple way through. This one's for sensible touring with wife - and fair dinkum, after twenty years of trips with other vehicles I can assure you that there are very few things that'll go where Milo could.
Running in: Get the engine warm then drive it like you stole it.
Strictly for rentals.....

Yes, a single big hit cracked one of my alloys and resulted in a slow leak. I imagine it may have eventually broke off as a lump. I was amazed to learn that it appears legal for cracked alloy wheels to be TIG welded provided the cracks are in certain locations. So if you buy a used alloy wheel, it is worth checking it hasn't been weld repaired. I don't like the sound of this even if it might be legal. Steel is the go, and some even look the goods, such as the steelies on the new Defender.
Good points - have heard they weld them. very risky! I'm not worried about looks and despite what people say they weigh about the same.
The rear wheel placement looks odd , too much tray hanging off the back, recipe for broken chassis when loaded up.
Same dimensions as most dual cabs if you go off spring shackles but might shift axle back later for a

Steel wheels can be hammered back into shape after a bend - cattle grid or something - whereas I don't need a tray for anything than usual stuff, alloy's best there - especially given the extra weight.
Sorry got to say you have turned a not too bad looking Ute to a crappy looking one with those shocking looking wheels

Toyota has never sponsored me. They want people buying new trucks not keeping old ones going!! Mahindra isn’t sponsoring me, they did provide the wheels though-
Qld parks and wildlife are getting rid of Mahindra And are getting Isuzu dmaxs. I have found out that they are on there 3rd diffs and are rusting out. And they don't even have 10000 km on them yet. So much for Mahindra. Just talk to them on Frazier island and thell tell you how bad they are.
I'm going to check on that - they do vehicle replacments regularly on Frasmo, but this goes agaiont what I know so far - thanks anyway!

Lift kit coming up - I wanted a new vehicle for once in my life - never had one. And no way I'd bother with a new Lux (anything older no worries) and especially one of those new Patrols! Couldn't afford to go to town let alone WA....
