Hello Mike, excellent work. Being a verneer box maker as a hobby here in the UK, I recently used , ebony, walnut, and boxwood strings in my latest project. Love your ways of working, and the box is stunning. Kind regards Danny uk 🇬🇧❤🇺🇸🙂👌
Thanks! Yep, staying healthy by remaining in my home office or in my workshop pretty much all the time. I hope to have more uploads soon. I've completed many projects, but haven't found the time to edit the videos.
I think this video is going to be very helpful, I’m planning on making several chess boards that are the lid to their own piece box. So basically this but the chess boards on top of the box lid. This video gave me several good ideas.
I can do a lot of things, and I can do them very well. But I am sure that I could never do something like this supreme artcraft (or should I say just "art"?) It´s absolutely AMAZING! Greetings from México, Master.
wow! really interesting piece of wood artwork! absolutely stunning. I'll have to make mine out of pine because there is not way I'm taking a 2nd mortgage on my house to afford that much Walnut and Ebony haha!
I realize you made this a few years ago, if you see this comment, could you tell me how tall the sides of your box are and how much space you allowed between your blocks that hold the chessmen? Love this and am working on one similar to this. Great job!!, 😊
I'm pretty sure the exterior of the box was 3.75" high and 3.25" high in the interior. Each block was 1 1/2" thick. I'm not 100%, but I believe the spacing between the blocks was approximately 1". I hope that helps!
Really nice work. Beautiful. But i could'nt help but notice that your square is out of square. Those two lines at your router table taper in towards eachother. But keep up the good work
Hello Mike, I love your skillful work. I am wondering if you could let me know from where you source the boxwood that you often use. I have searched for it and cannot find a supplier. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
I've been purchasing my boxwood from Exotic Lumber in Annapolis, MD. www.exoticlumber.com They have lots of turning blanks as well as other larger pieces.
Can you recall what the final dimensions of this box were? I made the chess board with the tiger maple frame. Looking to make the boxes now Thank you for all the good information.
I have this box drawn up in SketchUp and could send you the file if you'd like. I drew it up to figure out how to position the holders inside the box. It's not exactly as built, but fairly close. Just email me at woodumakeit@gmail.com and I'll send it to you.
beautiful. i wish my bandsaw cut a straight line like that. I have the laguna bx12 newer version, only allows for up to a 3/4" blade for resaw, is yuors a 1" ?
Hello Mike, I sent you an email yesterday asking about the making of this box for my high-end chess sets. Could you send me a reply? I know you're quite busy with orders which one of mine is included but I'd like to have a few of these boxes to house my prized Collection sets as I've sent you photos of a few of them. These boxes would make fabulous coffers for them. Thanks, Mike, hoping to hear from you soon...all the best...George from NYC.
Wood U Make It: I heard it bogg just a bit and it made me smile, I hear the same thing in my shop- Nice to see some of us are meer mortals, and down own the top of the line stuff- no hard feelings for those who do, it just nice to see another human periodically .
A coworker bought it about twenty years ago and just had it in storage. He asked me several times to buy it but I had no idea how I'd use it. When my client asked me to make a set of chess pieces and a box to hold them, that gave me the excuse to buy it. I was fortunate to get it for as really good price.
I meant to mention in the video that I used box joints with alternating colors to represent the squares in a chess board (but forgot), so rounding the corners wouldn't have worked. I rounded the corners of the top to expose the corners of the box, but it probably wasn't the right choice. But I didn't like them square either....
@@Woodumakeit I noticed the color treatments. I would've done something similar. Agreed re: the lid corners as well. Perhaps just a smaller radius would've been better? Oh well, it is what it is. Still a beautiful piece.
18:30 Tip: What you're doing there is super dangerous; especially with a bit of that size. Next time, try either clamping your small piece to a larger piece, or if there isn't enough material for a clamp, use a bench vise and a finish router. The time it takes to think it through is cheaper than the emergency room visit! -Cheers
Yeah, I was unsure about that. I did it to reveal the corners of the box joints, but it might not have been the right choice. After doing that, I thought about rounding the corners of the box joints, but I wanted to keep them looking like chess board squares.
Yes, some of them are pretty long. I'm just never sure which parts to cut without losing too much value for the how-to part. I suppose you could watch the videos at a 1.25 or 1.5 playback speed to make them go a little faster.
Great work. Your training as an engineer shows in the precision and planning of your work.

Thank you so much!
Thank you for the dimensions, love the project, working on a replica - walnut, cherry and maple. Fantastic work!!
Undoubtedly you're a great master designer and skilled mistiri.
Happy to see you upload! I hope you're staying safe Mike!

Simply beautiful, Great craftmanship looking forward to your next video!!
This is absolutely stunning! Such an impeccable work
Really beautiful and cool box!
Wow!. Great work and execution.

Really Really Nice! You took the time and effort to do it right- Hats Off To You
Wonderfully done! Such a piece of art.
Excellent work and beautiful results -- as always. Thanks!
Thanks, Jerry!

Who gave this a thumbs down? This was a great video and a very nice piece. Well done!
Excellent video and excellent product. You've got skills! Amazed once again :)
Great job mike..excellent
Great narration!
Very Beautiful and Creative
masterpiece indeed
Absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful work
Really beautiful. There’s no chance I could make that.
But wood you
Beautiful!
Outstanding!
I would make it if I could but I can't make it so I won't. Beautiful work I love it.
Gorgeous ! ❤️👍🏼
Perfect job!
Very nice! Are you using buxus or castello boxwood?
I can’t make this up. I was watching you cut something and I blew on my phone to clear the dust off your bandsaw... it’s been a long day

Interesting observation. I''ll definitely check, but I wonder if it might just be parallax caused by the angle and camera lens.
@@Woodumakeit
That's a possibility too offcourse. And lets hope that it's just that. But still a beautiful build. Keep it up, i enjoy your channel
Very nice, would be cool with a chess board on the lid

Sorry for the delay in replying back to you with thanks. That helps a lot. I'll contact them.
Your videos always end with me saying "Hell Yeah!" Nice job, but the music?
GREAT VIDEO!!! Can I ask you why did you make the extra queen?
The client requested it. Some chess sets come with an extra queen to use when a pawn gets promoted.
@@Woodumakeit THANKS! I didn't know about the extra queen in some sets.
@@daviddeangelo1330 I looked through the comments until I found yours because I had the same question. So now I know. 🤓

nice box...guessing kind of heavy though

Yes, it's a 1" Resaw King blade that I have in mine.
@@Woodumakeit cool, and which version of the laguna bandsaw is that?
Very nice, piece of art.
The music while pleasant enough was too loud

Are you selling these?
How will cost one of these?
That sweater though
Are you selling your any of these items ?
I would buy it!
If I wood make it, then I would make the pieces look more like regular ones.
You resaw effortlessly! I cringe every time I have a project resawing on any tool.
Keep in mind that I typically have the video sped up, so it looks easier than it is in real life. Sometimes my 1 hp bandsaw is a little under-powered.

I used to cringe as well and practically just gave up on re-sawing until I purchased a new 1/2” in blade from sawblade. com, then my life changed.
Man, that is beautiful. Please give me details if you have a website or email I can contact you about your creations.
Can I ask where you got a log of ebony?

Great. Can I suggest you lower the volume of the 'background' music. Thanks.
Or you can turn your volume down
@@daveklein2826 If I do that I can't hear the voice; it's the background music that doesn't match the overall (volume) expereince for me.

А где доска? Это переносные шахматы? Надо еще чемодан сделать для переноски комплекта.
Это доска, которую я сделал для него. ruclips.net/video/pVvoK840mwQ/видео.html
Wow!
👍👍
did you photoshop your sweater on ?
Just wanted to get your attention. 😂
Hello Mike, great job but I'm really worried about your hands:
they are too close to the circular saw which has no protection
Cómo puse en el vídeo anterior son muy bonitas las piezas pero no sirven para jugar
very good chess boards. Suggestion: I think it would be better if the videos were shorter☺☺☺☺†††

you're very nice and relaxing
