Welcome to LivingPianos.com, I'm Robert Estrin. Today I'm going to tell you the secret of rounded fingers. If you studied piano, you probably had teachers who said you must round your fingers and make them into a ball. But that can be painful! So why am I telling you to use rounded fingers? Well, there are different ways of approaching rounded fingers. I'm going to show you the correct way, which takes zero effort, and I'm going to explain why it's so important in your piano playing. And I'm going to give you examples of it. The first example I'm going to give is the famous Mozart K 545 C Major Sonata. I'm going to explain where the rounded fingers really come into play and why it's so important for you.

My take: Since our 3rd finger is the longest, and our thumb is the shortest we curve fingers 2-5 to compensate; so all our fingers can reach the keys. Our thumb doesnt curve, of course

The note value of each of the notes in a trill is 1/8 of the note value in the metronome mark. And the note value in the metronome mark also covers two ticks of the metronome, not just one, otherwise the trills would become impossible, not only for the pianist, but also for the piano mechanism, to be able to render.

No. A trill is not a clear fraction of a note. Its ability and interpretation of the pianist. Its free till you reach the next note / pause. Unless its written out of course.

There are measured trills, common to the Baroque era, and unmeasured trills as in Chopin and the Romantics. I believe that Mozart was still adhering to the principles of CPE Bach. i.e. measured trills. And they were not written out.

Even if there is freedom in the execution of trills in the Romantic era, they have to be measured in order for them to come out right. Otherwise, the trill may or may not end on the right note. There is a 50-50 chance that it will end correctly!

    Thanks for this information.
Referring to the trills, my teacher suggested playing trills with 4,2,3,2 fingers.
I think most folks use 3,2 or 3,1.

Haha! What a coincidence! I was just researching curved fingers this morning. Almost every online video instruction tells me to curve my fingers like I am holding a tennis ball. But every professional player I watched has relaxed relatively flat hands.
Anyway, I have long nail beds and my nails hurt when they hit the keys. So I have always played with relaxed flat hands since day 1.

When playing fast passages and trills, try having relaxed, rounded fingers!
