Now I know what to buy for my sister's birthday - a wooden paper pot maker! I've used toilet rolls as pots - the idea of squaring them up with a bottom is brilliant!
What fun! When I was a Brownie...way back in the day, one of the badges was to prepare a room for a sick person. Hospital corners, and all that lot, and one of the things we made was a paper pot to put used tissues in. It was similar to the origami pot. One forgets these skills when you have access to plastic bags, and such, for everything. Thanks for the reminder.
A tennis ball would work to 'scrudge' (love that word you made up vivi!) the paper in to the dimple of the wine bottle really well. you can get all different size ones at the pet shop for different size dogs if a standard size one is too big/small
Thank you Vivi, for sharing pot making techniques. Love the origami pot. Awesome. I will definitely use that type for my leeks. I am running out to the greenhouse to get my trays. So excited. :)
OMG, I'm in awe, what a brilliant way to make oregami pots. Those pictures would have totally baffled me lol, but I love the idea of the square loo rolls, I've got tons of them and I think making them square will help them fit better in a tray. Bravo Vivi, I now have loads of ideas to make my pots : - ) thank you x
with the origami pots - you could make a bunch and let them stay flatten. They would take up less room until you were ready to us them. :-) There is another way to make pots, also. They use the same amount of paper, just a little different design. Love the origami pots!
I have used the loo rolls before, but never thought to clip the bottoms and tuck them in. The origami pot looks pretty sturdy and would be great for larger plants like squash and melons. So, I learned two new skills today. Perfect timing as I just ran out of plastic pots and six-packs. Thanks!
Cool oregami pots! I don’t know what kind of inks they use in the UK for printing, but here in the US they tell us to only use black and white newspapers for stuff like that because colored inks have high levels of lead and heavy metals in them. 😱
Great video, I use empty loo rolls and then I place them in an empty ice cream tub and I use a recycled see through plastic container for the lid to use to make a mini green house for my seeds :-)
Hi Vivi, as always your excitement is so infectious. I enjoyed learning to make the origami pot and am looking forward to making some. I already make toilet paper and paper towel roll pots. So environmentally friendly and makes transplanting so easy.
Well I do believe you've saved what's left of my sanity. I was sowing my sweet peas in those fiddling toilet rolls last week and couldn't for the life of me find a way of filling them without losing half of the compost out of the bottom! Next time they're going for the snip! Love the idea of using the wine bottle as well - we always have plenty of them lying around - and who knows what might happen when I'm handed a sheet of paper and some origami instructions ... Thanks Vivi!
Thank you Vivi! Love spending time with you in the morning. So happy when I see you have posted! I have been making paper pots for years now, but never the origami way. Can't wait to try! ~Micki
Great job on the pot, looks brilliant, fantastic if you dont wanna use plastic I remember making paper pots years ago and gave a few of those pot makers away over the years. Great episode Vivi. Still got 2 ft of snow here cant wait to get back in the garden. good luck making pots :)
Great video Vivi! Recycle and re-use! Isn't origami great😀 My back garden is slowly getting rid of the excess water. Spent the last two days seed starting and enjoying the sun. I had a wonderful 80f/28c in the green house, felt like I was on a tropical island. Have a wonderful rest of your day 😆
Hey, you'll make a Blue Peter girl yet and with no sticky back plastic in sight!! Well that should keep you out of mischief for That should keep you out of mischief for a few hours!
They say every day is a school day, I’m going to have a go at all of them. I’ll let you know how I get on. If your at the Birmingham live garden show I’ll bring one to show you 😊😀😄
Excellent money-saving and resource-saving ideas. Richard now has a few jobs (outside his day job and his filming and editing!) - and I'll pop to the tube station and get the papers! You were so funny at the end; you were so buzzy and giddy with potted success!
Hahahaha - it was soooooooo satisfying!.....and I just learned an origami bin liner! Woohooooo.......anything to reduce waste. Hahahahaha - better get a wriggle on getting those papers so Richard can start his origami work! ;-)
Hi Vivi, What a happy video. I love it as much as you can rejoice when you have made something new. Origami is a great art. There are simpler forms, even for my kindergarten children. I'm definitely addicted to the fine art of paper folding now! Yes, my loo rolls sometimes go a bit manky too......but it doesn't seem to affect the plant (all my flint corn loo rolls went like this last year). Have fun folding paper. :-)
Wow. Who'd a thought you could have so much fun with loo rolls and a newspaper. Lol. Excellent. Right, I shall get on it now. Loving your Vids Vivi. Take are.
Vivi, there's no six foot snow drifts in Nebraska but we did get another 3 inches of snow. The temps here for today will hover around the freezing mark with 20 MPH winds. It's typical March weather for Nebraska. I have my onion sets started under the grow lights in half loo rolls but the rest of the seed starts are germinating in the 72 cell plant trays. My not so delicate hands don't handle wet newspaper pots very well when it comes time to plant them. They kind of fall apart on me from the tray to the garden soil. March wet snows are such a good thing for the soil. They usually melt slow and totally soak into the ground as apposed to April rains which run off. Snow is extremely rich in nitrogen so the soil gets a Spring boost for the young garden plants. The March snows don't usually hang around long and are totally melted in about two days. I have started the progression for growing lettuce. The first 18 seed cells have been planted with a weekly planting of 18 continuing through out the season and maybe all Winter as well. My seed packet has 2000 seeds so I figure that's enough for a couple years. There's still no life seen from the bell pepper seeds planted on 2/13/2018. I have two other batches planted with one being on 2/19/2018 from the sprouted seeds and another on 3/4/2018. I've never grown the bell peppers from seed before so it certainly is trying my patience. My gardener planner says it's time to sow the onion seeds so I'll be doing that today. Well,, and the cabbage too. So yes, there's plenty to do inside the house while the bipolar Spring decides when to actually arrive. Have a great day of pot making. Nebraska Dave
Despite the weather (what a weird few weeks!) it really is starting to feel like this new growing season is getting under way eh? I am determined to be better at successional sowing of my salad leaves this year.......I will take a 'leaf' out of your book. Most of my peppers came up after about two weeks.......but the French ones are only just appearing after three and a half weeks.......they're certainly testing my nerves. ;-)
Excellent video again!! I have started my early veg seeds a week ago, in the mini green house nice and moist and warm. Yesterday I found some red lily seed pods my daughter found (stole) on the walk home from the grocery. We dried them and now they are growing in the greenhouse as well. I don't know the variety but she said they were tall plants. It will be a surprise!! 💠💠💠💠
You are brilliant and I like gathering your light into my life! This video was such fun. I've made paper pots from cans the size of your wine bottle. The trick for me was to slam the base on the counter before removing the paper from the can. It seemed to be as effective as squishing the little ones on the base of the tool. Debs in Everett, Washington, USA who has always planted tomatoes before peppers but will reverse that this season.
A bin liner? Bring it on. I want to see how, as my community has just moved on to recycle. Worm castings added to your loo rolls soil might prevent the wanky? Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thank you for all the smiles you put in our life.
I'm thinking about making a video with all sorts of little plastic saving ideas.....and I'd definitely do the bin liner for it. Just need to find some time! ;-)
I made these a few years back and they went quite mouldy and they didn't rot in the ground so I would tear them a bit to let the roots break free. I made smaller ones.
Oh that's a shame. I use mine to start the seeds and when they're big enough for pricking out it makes the job really easy to simply tear down the side of the paper pot to get them out......and then the (by now) soggy/composty paper goes in the compost bin. :-)
good day to you Vivi !! love watching this as i've got the wooden pot make and i've made them paper pot before and they worked really well !! i still use loo rolls for pots all the time but never folded the bottoms in so that's new and i've never made the origami pot so that one i got to try !! thanks for sharing
Hi Vivi, like saving money on the paper plots enjoyed following you through the origami pot and have a nice pot at the end of it but think I would lose the plot if I had to make 40 of them I use the toilet roll as a template and it is easy to tuck the bottoms in , less paper and less time, to make 40 origami ones I think I would need a box set of plays to listen to before I got them finished, lol, my friend is visiting tomorrow I will try the origami on her and see how many we can get done. plus try half sheet of paper and see what size pot we get, have a good day, chris
Hahahaha - I would have lost the plot too if it weren't for some good sport on the radio.......I reckon doing it with your friend will be even better! Have fun together......and eat plenty of cake to keep you going. ;-)
Can you upload a link to the handout you were given, loving the origami "grow on" size pot, Now I'll have somewhere to put all the seedlings that have outgrown their toilet rolls. Like you I love recycling and reuse. Yay.
Oh sadly I don't have a link......nor the original instructions on paper. See if you can copy it a few times from the video and then you'll be able to do them blindfolded..... Sorry I can't be more helpful. :-(
There are other tutorials on RUclips that show the same thing. The one I watched seemed easier than this one. ruclips.net/video/7dlGQP81yfo/видео.html. I hope this helps. There are many others.
ruclips.net/video/gONIuCuHCJI/видео.html This was the day before yesterday in Northumberland - not making excuses! Sara’s kitchen garden made some fabulous paper pots ruclips.net/video/aOip1HzECzw/видео.html
Broadsheets would work better for the wine bottle Vivi - more "layers". When it is full of compost it will be stable so the bottom dimple doesn' really matter (IMHO) Steve
Who da thunk it? Lol, I remember this video I saved it 4 years ago in my farm section. My grandson loved it, but I went back to the strips =) to much thinking for this brain.
Vivi - what exactly is that 3 layer stainless steel pot by the apron hanging on the wall? Is it a steamer set or what? Just very curious...am a kitchen tool-oholic! :-) and thanks for the pot making tips :-)
Yes looks like a steamer I have one too... Got mine from Wilko www.wilko.com/steamers-egg-poachers/wilko-3-tier-steamer-stainless-steel-18cm/invt/0260998?nst=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8cPsu5nT2QIVz7vtCh2EyAcdEAQYASABEgKA-vD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Correct. It's my steamer......I've had it for nearly 30 years (!) it's great for veg (obvs) but great economy too as I only have to use one gas ring....... :-)
R Reet chuck well what can a say Wow! And the wine drink while making the paper folded pots (can't spell oroagarmy ha ha ha) But on second thought better hadn't §~€
hey Vivi, i did see this video and though of you and your corn, its a way to get the corn off of the cobs easely ruclips.net/video/J9zfh8qYa-o/видео.html I did try Folding those pots aswell, i think i will do that when im out of pots (is gonna be soon as this is my first year on a plot), thank you for the lesson in folding pots!
I did it, I did it, I did it -- the origami pot! I'll have seed-starting pots galore for cheap! Thanks Vivi!
Yay! Good on you. :-)
Now I know what to buy for my sister's birthday - a wooden paper pot maker! I've used toilet rolls as pots - the idea of squaring them up with a bottom is brilliant!
Yay for a lovely Christmas gift for her! Ahh, yes, squaring the loo rolls and closing the bottom....saves all the compost falling out. ;-)
I was thinking about sitting outside and looking at the snow, but worried I might get a cold, good idea with pots
Stay cosy lovely. :-)
What fun! When I was a Brownie...way back in the day, one of the badges was to prepare a room for a sick person. Brilliant!!! A paper pot for used hankies......genius.....I must make a load for my great aunt! I was a Brownie too. ;-)
I loved how you said that you had never done origami in your life and you were beginning to see why, lol! Thanks so much for this video, Vivi 😀🤗🤗
Hahaha- cheers lovely......it was strangely therapeutic once I'd mastered it. 😉
A tennis ball would work to 'scrudge' (love that word you made up vivi!) the paper in to the dimple of the wine bottle really well. you can get all different size ones at the pet shop for different size dogs if a standard size one is too big/small
Excellent thinking Batman! Cheers. Trots off to look for tennis ball..... ;-)
Love the origami pots! They'd be great as little gift boxes, too, made with some pretty paper.
Absolutely. I tried one with pretty paper.....worked a treat......thinking of Easter gifts with little painted eggs in...... :-)
Thank you Vivi, for sharing pot making techniques. Love the origami pot. Awesome. I will definitely use that type for my leeks. I am running out to the greenhouse to get my trays. So excited. :)
Have fun folding and rolling. I've used the larger origami ones for my leeks too. :-)

Oh I love my square loo rolls.....makes everything so much easier! And the origami.....oh my goodness....it was so satisfying and fun! :-)
with the origami pots - you could make a bunch and let them stay flatten. They would take up less room until you were ready to us them. :-) There is another way to make pots, also. They use the same amount of paper, just a little different design. Love the origami pots!
Now that's a very good idea......then I could start making them earlier in the winter..... Thank you! :-)
LOVE!!! I made origami seed packets the other day and now I am going to make these pots. Origami is super fun. 😃
Ooooh, I'll have to have a go at seed packets too. I think I'm already addicted to origami! ;-)
I have used the loo rolls before, but never thought to clip the bottoms and tuck them in. The origami pot looks pretty sturdy and would be great for larger plants like squash and melons. So, I learned two new skills today. Perfect timing as I just ran out of plastic pots and six-packs. Thanks!
Hurray for newspapers and loo rolls. Have fun making. :-)
Cool oregami pots! I don’t know what kind of inks they use in the UK for printing, but here in the US they tell us to only use black and white newspapers for stuff like that because colored inks have high levels of lead and heavy metals in them. 😱
The vast majority of our papers now use vegetable based inks - hurrah! :-)
What Vivi did next oh good! I was like, Vivi probably researched what trees made the paper before using them! Lol!! But just in case...
Great video, I use empty loo rolls and then I place them in an empty ice cream tub and I use a recycled see through plastic container for the lid to use to make a mini green house for my seeds :-)
Perfect idea. :-)
If you haven't got a posh pot maker .. Try a flat ended wooden rolling pin... Doesn't take much to make us happy ! :D
Perfect! Like kids with boxes at Christmas.......simple things, great pleasures. ;-)
Hi Vivi, as always your excitement is so infectious. I enjoyed learning to make the origami pot and am looking forward to making some. I already make toilet paper and paper towel roll pots. So environmentally friendly and makes transplanting so easy.
Yay! have fun folding and creating! :-)
Well I do believe you've saved what's left of my sanity. Hahahaha - hurray for saved sanity! I, too, go a bit bonkers about the soil falling out of the bottom. Voila, problem solved. :-)
Hahaha! Excellent! What fun! Thanks Vivi 💕
Cheers! Have fun giving it a go yourself. :-)
Well Vivi I like the last one ill have to watch your video ten times to get that right Well here I go Thanks
Hahahha - it was actually quite easy after I got that first one done......good luck and have fun. ;-)
Oh a "pot" party to empty a few bottles of vino. This would also be a great activity for the children to get them involved with gardening. Happy day.
The kids can do the origami in the day and the grown ups can do the wine bottle(s) version at night. Everyone's happy! ;-)
Thank you Vivi! Love spending time with you in the morning. So happy when I see you have posted! I have been making paper pots for years now, but never the origami way. Can't wait to try! ~Micki
Have fun! It was so ridiculously satisfying! :-)
In a few years I'll be moving to Australia so I'll be doing a garden there which will be really new for me
Wow.....that's a big change.....how exciting! :-)
Great job on the pot, looks brilliant, fantastic if you dont wanna use plastic I remember making paper pots years ago and gave a few of those pot makers away over the years. Great episode Vivi. Still got 2 ft of snow here cant wait to get back in the garden. good luck making pots :)
Anything to reduce plastic and waste! I reckon it's something you could get your kids doing......unless they're outside having snowball fights! ;-)
Great video Vivi! Recycle and re-use! Isn't origami great😀 My back garden is slowly getting rid of the excess water. Spent the last two days seed starting and enjoying the sun. I had a wonderful 80f/28c in the green house, felt like I was on a tropical island. Have a wonderful rest of your day 😆
Oh how wonderful for you to finally enjoy some warmth and drying out. Hurrah! maybe spring is on the way after all! ;-)
I have used a jam jar to make paper pots, just like you used the bottle, It works very well. Loved the other ideas. Thanks!
Brilliant. Cheers. :-)
Wow! its so helpful now that my plastic pots are ending. Would love to try this.. right now! 😀
Yay! Have fun. :-)
ALWAYS look forward to your videos! This was fun.
Cheers! Have fun having a go yourself. :-)
The origami pot is SO clever I’ll be giving that a try.
So clever......who thinks these amazing things up? I love it! :-)
Hey, you'll make a Blue Peter girl yet and with no sticky back plastic in sight!! Well that should keep you out of mischief for
That should keep you out of mischief for a few hours!
Thought I'd lost my message there so sorry for repeat😁
Hahahahaha - I would have loved to have been a Blue Peter girl! ;-)
They say every day is a school day, I’m going to have a go at all of them. I’ll let you know how I get on. If your at the Birmingham live garden show I’ll bring one to show you 😊😀😄
Have fun having a go - that's the main thing eh? No, I won't be at the show.....too expensive. ;-)
Hahahahaha - better get a wriggle on getting those papers so Richard can start his origami work! ;-)
SO, cool! Happy pot making!
Weeeeeeeee, t'was such fun. :-)
Hi Vivi,
What a happy video. I love it as much as you can rejoice when you have made something new.
Origami is a great art. There are simpler forms, even for my kindergarten children. You can fold animals, flowers, Christmas ornaments, Easter bunnies or very small boxes.
When a child has managed to get this work done on their own, that is the start for many, many, many of them.
Of course, there are also extreme forms, only for adults.
In Japan, there are even proper origami championships.
How many potties did you manage?
I tried sowing in toilet paper rolls two weeks ago, just as a test, so to speak.
And you know what, all the roles are moldy after a short time, even though they were not wet at all.
Doesn't that happen to you?
I had to throw them all.
Hopefully spring will be able to move in soon.
Until then, happy potty wrinkles.
All my greetings from Germany sends you
Claudia
I'm definitely addicted to the fine art of paper folding now! Yes, my loo rolls sometimes go a bit manky too......but it doesn't seem to affect the plant (all my flint corn loo rolls went like this last year). Have fun folding paper. :-)
You explained/explored the art of origami pot-making brilliantly !
Cheers!......and I had fun too.....what could be better. :-)
Wow. Who'd a thought you could have so much fun with loo rolls and a newspaper. Lol. Excellent. Right, I shall get on it now. Loving your Vids Vivi. Take are.
Hahahaha - I know, right?! I loved it. :-)
Thanks Vivi, looks fun !
It was! :-)
Most of my peppers came up after about two weeks.......but the French ones are only just appearing after three and a half weeks.......they're certainly testing my nerves. ;-)
Loads of fun thanks Vivi
Thank you! I had a heap of fun making them. :-)
Fantastic!
Cheers! Have fun rolling and folding. :-)
clever girl well done
Cheers.......got there eventually! After the first one the rest were easy..... ;-)
Absolutely ingenious.
Whoever came up with this is so clever! :-)
Ooooh, a surprise plant! What fun. :-)
Way cool! Thanks, Vivi
Cheers - have fun having a go. :-)
Great idea.
Dinky huh? :-)
Ooooh, I'll have to try your slamming technique! Happy growing season to you! :-)
Just need to find some time! ;-)
Great video and idea help saving the planet 🌏 👍
......all these little acts add up to a better planet for us all. :-)
Brilliant! I’m inspired. Just ran out of plastic modules - you saved the day!
Hurray! Happy folding and creasing. :-)
What Vivi did next, oh I didn't think of that. Good idea!
What about using a cork or the top of another bottle. Thanks for the video and your happy self
Good thinking. Cheers! :-)
Awesome update Vivi thank you for sharing and blessings
Cheers lovely. :-)
Very impressed with all of those methods. We shared your excitement with the origami one. Great fun to watch. 😀
Hahaha - fab! Did you try one yet? Easy once you get the first one worked out...... Have fun! :-)
I certainly intend to try it next time I get some newspaper. 😀
good day to you Vivi !! love watching this as i've got the wooden pot make and i've made them paper pot before and they worked really well !! i still use loo rolls for pots all the time but never folded the bottoms in so that's new and i've never made the origami pot so that one i got to try !! thanks for sharing
You're welcome. Have fun folding and cutting! ;-)
I got one of them pot maker things I haven't used it yet thanks for explaining it :)
Oooh, have fun with it......it becomes a bit addictive! ;-)
Loved this video Vivi - you can guess what I ll be doing this week! Love it xx
Aww...cheers. Have fun folding! ;-)
Great video! I need to buy one of those small wooden paper pot makers.
Yay! Have fun. :-)
Have fun together......and eat plenty of cake to keep you going. ;-)
interesting and informative.Thanks
You're welcome - it was great fun doing the origami! :-)
Lovely lovely stuff! Will be giving this a go for sure . Many thanks Vivi :0)
Excellent......enjoy your origami time. :-)
Fun video. Grown up version of paper dolls.
Hahaha - yes! ;-)
i found one of those plant pot makers you have, it was £2.99 in Home Bargains! buzzing :)
Happy rolling and folding! ;-)
love it!
Yay! So easy......and free! Whooppee. :-)
Nice vlog ❤️
Cheers! :-)

Sara’s kitchen garden made some fabulous paper pots
ruclips.net/video/aOip1HzECzw/видео.html
Ohhhhhh, but it looks so beautiful. Stay snug. :-)
Hi viv that was great what about using the handle of the pot maker for the bottom of the wine bottle
Ah, yes, good thinking. Thank you! :-)
The seed trays I have fit 98 toilet roll cubes, apparently. (And they go together fast enough tiny fingers don't mangle them too much)
Hahaha - perfect! That's a lot of loo rolls.....well done saving them. :-)
My house has many butts. =^.^=
LOL!!
It's a good idea but I think I'll still with my toilet roll's lol, it's raining now so the last bit of snow will be gone soon :-) Happy Day's.
Hopefully we can all get back to playing in the dirt this week! :-)
Broadsheets would work better for the wine bottle Vivi - more "layers". When it is full of compost it will be stable so the bottom dimple doesn' really matter (IMHO)
Steve
I totally agree......I need to find a friend who reads the broadsheets. ;-)
Or a bit of the old school gum to join two tabloids together - worms like gum!
Steve
What happens to the paper after watering the seedling then how do you plant it out if the pots have disintergrated?????🤔🤔
The pots don't disintegrate before it's time to plant them out......they only disintegrate once in the soil.
Neat-o.
Dinky huh? Have fun. ;-)
Free metro I do as well for cat tray ❤️wirral 😀did you get free white flat coffee🙃☕️oh viv were shrimpers or is it scrimpers🍁🍂
Scrimpers! And good for us. No, I don't drink coffee.......and it was probably in a disposable cup.....ugh, hate disposable stuff! ;-)
Who da thunk it? Lol, I remember this video I saved it 4 years ago in my farm section. My grandson loved it, but I went back to the strips =) to much thinking for this brain.
Hahaha.....ditto! 😉
Shred the 2 hanging parts into the pot before you fill with compost!!!
Cheers. :-)
Vivi - what exactly is that 3 layer stainless steel pot by the apron hanging on the wall? Is it a steamer set or what? Just very curious...am a kitchen tool-oholic! :-) and thanks for the pot making tips :-)
Yes looks like a steamer I have one too... Got mine from Wilko www.wilko.com/steamers-egg-poachers/wilko-3-tier-steamer-stainless-steel-18cm/invt/0260998?nst=0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8cPsu5nT2QIVz7vtCh2EyAcdEAQYASABEgKA-vD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Correct. It's my steamer......I've had it for nearly 30 years (!) it's great for veg (obvs) but great economy too as I only have to use one gas ring....... :-)
thanks :-)
