Late 90s (97-99) when I was 14-16 with Napster and internet sites in general was an amazing way for me to discover amazing emcees (their underground ish and freestyles from Clue, Stretch & Bobbito, Wake Up Show, etc) from Eminem to Canibus to Aesop Rock to Atmosphere, to MosDef/Kweli (and all the Rawkus stuff), to Tonedeff, to Phaorahe Monch, to Common to Wordsworth to Natural Elements, to Artifacts, to Outsidaz, to Chino XL to Elzhi to Masta Ace to MC Juice to Vakill to Percee P to Benefit and so much more! What a time!

That list of names is my cup of tea.

Wordsworth was super underrated. He was on lyricist lounge MTV show. He created styles and had mad conceptual tracks. Crew with Punchline. He taught me a lot about rhyming. Tonedeff was introduced to me by a highschool teacher who used to rhyme with him.
You named a great array of emcees all of whom I've listened to and studied. Much respect bro.
Juice has a song about the dope rappers who never made it. And battled Eminem. I was just jamming percee P earlier today. Homeboy had a style like none another. Had tracks with J5 and Kane, Aesop Rock, Planet Asia and battled Lord Finesse back in the day.
Too much dope hip hop but remains fossilized through people like us

I remember as a kid in Philly staying in on friday nights to make tapes off Power 99 hip hop show called Radioactive. Id edit it and make copy and sell em at school so i could go to Funko-mart on Market St to buy rap,doo wop, and r and b albums to scratch, mix and sample. A good beat or intro has always drawn me into great rap songs, lyrics that go somewhere is essential as well. From Philly w ❤️

Yeah, sadly, I am one of those failed mid-90s 'fool' rappers. I'm on some posse cuts of a known entity that still is thriving today, but I didn't even get credit for my verses in the liner notes. Oh well, life's a gamble. At least I'm still poetic AF and can spit like a cobra.

I don't think aesop would be a dick like that to tape himself on another tape. I read that back then he was self releasing shit. Interesting way to be discovered by someone that became good friends with him and also a label mate through the 10s.
