"...no disrespect to the people who make art for the sake of art." That line will be repeated by me multiple times. He knows that the general artistic world lacks passion. For me though, he is what an artist should be.
all i care about is if i like whats coming out of the speakers. i dont demand artists to make profound songs about life all the time because thats ridiculous. be open and vibe out
Well, it's a matter of opinion who you're favorite rapper is. I don't think I've ever heard anyone more authentic than Slug. For me personally, that puts him right up there as one of the greatest rappers.
He mentioned Isaac Brock. Modest Mouse is my second favorite music group of all time. Slug is one of my favorite rappers. I never thought there would be such an overlap between the rock and rap music I listen to and am influenced by. It never even occurred to me that Slug would jam out to, say 'Lonesome Crowded West' the same as I do. I dig it.
i hear what he is saying but all that headshots stuff was classic. i can appreciate raps about raps and i can appreciate songs that are about somethhing. why limit yourself? its all music
"if you're gunna take 4 minutes of my time, i want you to communicate something to me"....THANK YOU!!! and that's exactly what he does too. lil wayne? pft. i dont wanna hear about how weezy makes money and how big he thinks of himself. i want to be able to relate to what i listen to. and i want to listen to a song that at the end, i have to pause the next track just so i can think. and i want music that makes me think. thank you slug
respect slug. i think its the fact that you are unquestionably sincere in every message you put out and its evident from the first word. i like to think that people get tired of superficial bullshit and see your work as something that shines and stands out because you dont dumb it down or clean it up, its just real music thats good for you, head heart and soul.
When I was just starting to listen to Atmosphere when I was 19-20 I'd read a lot of random Slug interviews online and the only thing that pissed me off was how he said he thought 'Overcast!' was overrated but I think he was just being overly critical. I do think 'Headshots: Seven' (as the two CD remastered version) is the best rap album ever made though.
Maybe kids feel they need to ignore their life by taking on someone else's virtual life (through the speakers), more than when he was younger? I'm nearly 17 and have just started to listen to him . He's a great artist.
First atmosphere song that caught me was "Trying To Find A Balance" yes it's "rip-the-mic" type of song- but I was dazzled how much true morality he has managed to pack in the song, now I listen to Slug simply because I believe him - relevance comes with it :)
7:45 lmao to answer your question ($Lug) its because you say cool funny shit like that while being witty and original not to mention ONE of THE Greatest
Slug we don't have to necessarily relate to everything you say to know that it come from your heart. And thats what makes you an other guys like you different. The music you make is about what real life is like for the most of us. You make art to connect with people not just to be a thug an make another dollar. It's not just about $. I haven't been through half the shit you have but what you say... man that shit still gets to me too this day. Reach down in a grab the heart.
I discovered Eyedea about 2-3 years ago and fell the fuck in love with all his stuff. A year or two later I got into Atmosphere and now I'm all over P.O.S. Brother Ali, Aesop, and other unappreciated rappers. And I'm 20 now, so this video makes me feel all cool and shit. Yeah, just sayin
"The last my chemical romance album pissed you off" oh my god Slug is so freakin cute I LOVE HIM! Haha but that's how i feel about rap music everything he said. It has to have meaning a story!! God I love slug
I'm so glad he name-dropped Isaac Brock because I've always thought they are two of the greatest lyricists of their generation - makes tons of since to me that slug is a fan
"If you're gonna take four minutes of my time i want you to communicate something to me" Fuck i like that that's how i feel I dont know much of Slug but Imma do research now. I know bout Eyedea but if anyone has some Slug suggestions toss'em my way.
+Respect2theFallen I think his most powerful music is the work that tells stories through various perspectives that some people wouldn't pick up on or relate to. Songs like "Little Man" where he writes letters to characters in 'his life', including himself, yet they all point to his own learning, struggles, and understanding. Through other people he becomes more aware and understanding of himself. You could find the same themes in songs like Not Another Day, The Waitress, Pour Me Another, Smart Went Crazy, Guarantees, ect. His ability to relate to personas and characters beyond his own eyes I feel is what truly makes him unique. I think his directly 'personal' songs are equally powerful. Godlovesugly, godsbathroomfloor, fuckyoulucy, Travels Remix, yesterday, are equal essentials. "Nothing but sunshine' is probably the most incredibly personal story as relates to 'himself'. I use quotes about 'his' stories because although his authenticity is undeniable, I can't assume that everything he writes about is 100% a true story, but to me these songs are as real as it gets. I think that his newer music is rather bland, and almost goes against what he says in this video. He stopped caring about being a great rapper, or being relevant in recent years.
slug yo, truly even opened another part of my mind open. like another fuckin door or something this dude gets it and is quite gifted. if u ever see this this man thank u brudda that's all i have to say
Its funny how much i can relate to just his interviews... I ve always had a ear for everything, all sorts of music from sinatra to beethoven to deep purple to eskimo music, fuck idk, everything. When i heard atmosphere for the first time was when my buddy gave me his copy of I cant believ how much fun were having and I just flipped out, listened to it for three hour a day for weeks, nothing comes close to this mature advanced mix of cultures, so thanks, slug.
This guy is a genius.. A modern genius.. Their's a lot of modern geniuses who are rappers in my opinion. Geniuses. Slug, Common, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, maybe Andre 3000 and some other emcees.. idk
I'm 19 and I can tell you this; I would much rather hear the perspectives of an artist in his mid 30s or 40s reflect on real life in the form of music than to hear a musician at my precise age babbling about stupidity. Older people are much more wiser, and Slug is living proof of that.
@@dylanjamessparks Holy shit, yes, almost 30 now…forgot about this comment. Crazy how my views on this have changed quite a bit since I posted this comment.

im shocked that i have every single atmosphere and headshot track (all volumes) i think, i really wish i could meet this guys one day. There fucking dope!
@inkinc12345 yeah I think that's got a lot to do with how prolific he's always been. The man writes so much. Check out the interview that Brother Ali does at the Whole. He talks about how Slug used to write at least ten full songs a week. Slug's work ethic is out of this world.
He's confused about kids being into him. It's not that he's relevant, it's that he's trying to convey something meaningful period. and THAT'S what makes up a real artist.
You can definitely hear the Willie and Tom Waits in the Slug’s writing style. Songs like Delicate and God’s Bathroom Floor might as well be if Tom Waits was a rapper
@riverbeddesert I wish everyone who commented on this video lived near me so that we could talk about real music and topics. I wish there were more people like the ones in these comments who analyze something because they realize that their is so much more to get from something than face value. Anyone who says they've done everything is crazy because I'm sure they could go back and do it all again and feel like it was all new.
@riverbeddesert yeah, alot of his newer stuff I'm sure you can relate with. Life comes at you FAST. sometimes, we overlook whats really important and dwell on the Bullshit...
I do like this video but riverbeddesert is right it doesnt matter what age you are in some cases a 17 year old will understand better then a 35 year old it all comes out of life experiences and what you make of them
Yo Slug, you know why 20 year old kids like the music written by your 35 year old self? It's because for the first time, they're hearing something real. Mainstream radio is a joke, and big time rap is all about basic beats and PMW. Your shit is real, it's personal, and it resonates with everyone on a level they don't normally feel like they're allowed to share. Speak your bars over a few of Ant's tracks and all of the sudden you have an album that people play when they need to think. How much of that can you say about Kanye or Drake? Not much.
@BortPlate i don't think his music/lyrics are any more significant than....say....busta rhymes or ...........the next MC that only ''crushes the mic'', lyrical content is only a fraction of the overall music project, you cannot only focus on lyrical topics, anyone can talk some shit about politics and ''important issues'' or love, but not everyone has the talent to delivery perfectly, have unique style, great production, original word play, rap fast or slow, have great energy and so on....
i dont know why people telling their ages when they comment... Why? If you are 14 what should i think? If you are 17 then what? I dont get it! Tell me what it is good for
Nowadays 17 year olds know all about fatherhood and prescription drugs.. But you gotta see what Slug is saying about how his subject matter has to change over time no matter what or he's selling himself out..
yea slug, your music is like just.... universal. we can all relate to it. doesn't matter if your getting old, you're wise af.
You tell em girl
