The way Henry articulated this is so perfect. I don’t think someone can become better than Ronaldo, he’s probably the pinnacle of genetics and work ethic. But there’s always going to be some freak who’s just born different like Messi.

Henry's story about Messi just dribbling past everyone when he's mad is really interesting to me, because it shows Messi kind of understands just how good he is to be able to at will embarass his Barcelona teammates, yet from game to game whether against minnows or the clasico, he will always make the right pass, always make the unselfish play if it is better than his option. Even if his teammates miss sitters or sometimes don't make the same unsefish pass back he rarely, if ever, changes from the unselfish approach.
To me, that's remarkable, it shows his dedication and respect to his team, his respect for winning and his general demeanor. I'm not comparing this to Ronaldo or anyone else, but I hope aspiring footballers hear this story and appreciate it as the way football is meant to be played.

I'm a Ronaldo fan just because I appreciate the hard work someone puts in something, and even almost 30 years old,he has won almost everything during his career and he still trains as he was a 19 year old trying to get a position in the first line-up,Messi on the other hand is above everyone in football ,if messi wants to be the best in a match, the defenders will never have a chance to tackle him only if they come 4 at him at the same time or foul him, or else he will never give the ball away, thats what messi does when he's in a hungry mood and right now ,from what i've seen in 2015 ,messi is really scary with that will of playing. And some people shouldnt complain about anything, jst enjoy both players cuz they are really amazing.

I love the story Henry tells about how Messi gets fired up and just goes and scores. There was that Copa Del Rey Final against Bilbao where he scored that wonder goal by beating 4 players on the right wing. The lead up to that was that one of the Bilbao players had been heavily following him. After that, when Messi got the ball, he purposely tried to beat that player to show him who is boss. Then eventually, he decided he would just go and score...and then he did.

This is a never ending debate so I'll just say this. At his very best Messi is comfortably the greatest in the world. In 2012 he was batshit crazy 91 goals. Ronaldo is great too but I never felt like he's by far and away the best. Though in past 12 months or so you could say CR7 has been better due to Messi's injuries and stuff. But that's the difference, for Ronaldo to be better Messi has to suffer form dip and injuries whereas as for Messi to be better he just has to be on top form himself. Both are complete players though. Messi can be the perfect no 10 and no 9. Ronaldo can be the perfect no 7 and no 9.

Riesya Rania Except for Masherano and Di Maria, Messi had no one that played well in this World Cup. He created a great number of chances, He always managed to dribble past players and open up space, and apart from the WC Final, his shooting was very good. The only good thing Ronaldo managed to do in the World cup was to get a good cross, and also hit Lahm (a 1-man wall) while taking a freekick.
Don't get me wrong, I respect Ronaldo alot and Argentina's side is full of individual talents. But don't tell me that Portugal isn't, also most of the argentinian players were a dissapointment, especially the strikers.

Ronaldo team mates at Man U like Rooney said they had to sacrifice there game for Ronaldo and had to play out wide for him. At Madrid Mourinho played a counter attacking style made for Ronaldo. Ronaldo has had the best assisters in Europe put chances on a plate for him recently like Ozil and Di Maria.

It's incredible to have watched the both of them throughout their careers, and Thierry put it brilliantly, it's great for kids coming up because you have both examples - 1 of the genius, and the other of the hard worker, but what they both have in common is their mentality, they're both never satisfied with what they've accomplished and love the game.

I know there's not only one way of interpreting football, but it's really hard for me to understand those who think Ronaldo is at the same level or, even worst, better than Messi. And honestly I've never heard/read any good statement supporting their opinion. I mean, being faster without the ball or having a much better header is too far from being enough to offset all the aspects in which Messi is better. Other would tell that Ronaldo proved himself in more than one team, which only shows how little they understand about the importance of Messi within a team. I think most of Ronaldo fans are more attracted to what he represents than to his football. He is like a movie star and lot of people would like to be like him. But strictly talking about football, I think he has always been miles away from Messi. Considering their goal scoring rate is not enough to compare them. Wide stats like goals scored and assists (crap parameter btw) don't tell the whole story. The influence that Messi has in the team, his impact on the game is much bigger. And that's simply because he can do many other things apart from striking, and he does them all superbly.

+Santiago Novillo You make good points, but the comparison between the two players is valid not because of their style of play, but their greatness. You stated points on why Messi is a better player than Ronaldo, but you also diminish Ronaldo. I believe Messi is a better payer, but to say his fans are more attracted to what he represents than to his football is arrogant and borderline idiotic. Ronaldo is the first player to score 50 goals in five consecutive seasons, only player to have score 60 goals in a calendar year four consecutive seasons, only player to have won the following trophies at 2 different clubs: League Title, UEFA CL, League Super cup, League Cup, League MVP, Golden Boot, Ballon d'Or, and FIFA CWC, fastest player to score 350 goals for a single club in Europe's top 5 leagues, and is the all-time leading goal scorer in Champions League history. By the way, that is only 5 of 40 + records Ronaldo has broken in his career. Again, I agree with you that Messi is a better player, but Ronaldo is one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, period and that is why the comparisons are valid. They are different players and have different impacts, but they are both the legends.

It is hard to express Messi's dribbling skills with numbers and that is why everything comes down to personal preferences. I agree that there are areas where Ronaldo is better (heading, full sprint speed, long range shooting), but the toughest two things in football are dribbling and scoring goals. This is what separates very good players from top players. And there is nobody on this planet who does that better than Messi. Ronaldo scores a lot, but when in form - Messi scores in unbelievable numbers. And there is no point talking about dribbling, Messi is the definition of dribbling. Only Maradona and some of older guys like Garrincha and Best can be included in any debate about dribbling along with Messi. Everyone who plays footbal knows that dribbling good players and scoring most goals is the measure of true quality.

      Most international goals
      Most hat-tricks

Achieved top scorer in Serie A multiple times (Regarded by Juventus as one of their Legends)
Won a ballon d'or in the Premier League (Still the last one to do so)
Real Madrid all-time top scorer (biggest and most historic club in the world)
      Messi:
Top scorer in La Liga only (Regarded by Barca as one of their Legends)
      Most freekick goals
91 goal season that is widely regarded by non-messi fans as a 73 goal season (scoring in international friendlies isn't impressive) another stain on that record is a recently uncovered truth about barca's referee bribing scandal which they have officially been CHARGED for. It includes the years 2009 till 2018. Do what you will with that information 😉

In regards to Messi's footballing ability seeming more "natural" and "gifted" and Ronaldo's ability coming from extremely hard work and dedication to reach the top, I think of putting it this way:
What do you appreciate more? - Someone who is born at the top.
or Someone who is born into poverty who works hard to reach the top.
    and that is my answer.
I appreciate someone who works their ass off to be where they are far more than someone who has been "gifted". Now of course, I'm not saying Messi doesn't work hard, because it's quite clear that he does, but if he is really that "natural" then Ronaldo is my preferred player out of the two any day.
Plus, at the end of the day it's stupid to compare the two. They're completely different types of players and what these two guys are doing on a world class level is incredible and a once in a life time thing. We're lucky to be witnessing it and years from now we'll all look back at how good Ronaldo and Messi both were and realise we spent all this time arguing over who's better, that we never actually appreciated them both as individuals.

Of course if you are a friend to a particular person you won't talk bad about them unless you are a bad friend. It doesn't make Ronaldo below Messi, vice versa. Same argument with managers.. I'm sure Quique Setién or any of his teammates/friends/family etc. wouldn't straight up say to the press "Hey, you know what, Ronaldo is better, Messi is trash." Regardless, your arguments are still pointless and don't prove anything. Both have had their ups and downs and both are still world class players at the top of their game. The argument lies between one being naturally gifted and the other being hard working which makes me admire both players who are titans of football from the achievements they've made. We could go on all day comparing stats right down to the nitty gritty but at the end of the day saying hey look Ronaldo won this and Messi won that but not this that and the other. It's obviously clear that both are equally as good whether that's down to stats or opinions.

One more thing I would like to add in Messi's favour is that he kinds of plays normal football but just at a higher rate. He does not try to do too many tricks and therefore does not disrespect the other players in this sense. He certainly does not dive. I think that these characteristics give him much respect amongst the public and the other players.

Watching this video after Messi has won the world cup and on the verge of winning his 8th Ballon D'or and cementing his position as the one and only Greatest footballer of all time over the likes of Pele and Maradona and Cristiano. I can't help but admire Cristiano more now. Ronaldo guy as a person is arrogant and has always been insecure of Messi but he always had an unimaginable aspiration to be the best. And it's his urge that kept him as Messi's rival for many seasons. I remember we used to argue with Ronaldo and Madrid fans all the time over who is better as they kept outperforming each other in every other season. Though he's no longer comparable to Messi now due to the sheer amount of achievements of Messi , Ronaldo will still go down in history as one of the greatest ever and a prime example how far hard work and dedication can get you. Nothing but respect to Cristiano for the player he is.

the way I have always said it is like this. Messi is goku. He is pure genius and talent. No matter what he is destined to be the greatest and he has raw talent in his craft and this is unbeatable. Ronaldo is Vegeta. Vegeta is the guy who is loved and hated because of his confidence (as I see it) or arrogance (as others see it). Vegeta (Ronaldo) works the hardest out of anybody to be the best and most powerful and at times there are instances where he is the best. But goku (messi) will always come out ahead because of his natural ability and talents. That is why I always loved vegeta (ronaldo) (no homo) more because of his pure hard work ethic and his personality in battles (on the field). You see emotion such as pride, anger, and determination in vegeta (ronaldo).

Think people that hate on Ronaldo for not passing or assisting need to understand that they play in different positions.
Messi is under a system where he is to create openings and passing the ball.
In Reals' system, Ronaldo is the first choice goal scorer. He isn't really a winger, dude is a complete forward, whereas Messi (CF) is in the role of assisting Neymar and Suarez and also scoring if the chance is there.
Hard to compare two players when they play different roles and in different tactics.

    • @theV1car
      @theV1car 9 лет назад

Haunted you say that but Messi in his assist role as you put it scores almost as much as Ronaldo and when he was Central striker under Pep, he Scored more. So you can compare them as creative players and as goal scorers. That said, they are both wonderful to watch. I must admit, I enjoy watching Messi more. I even enjoyed watching Zidane and Ronaldinnho more than Ronaldo (as good as he is). The others I've mentioned were in my opinion more poetic in football than the amazing Ronaldo. I think CR7 has the biggest motivation of all the super stars I've seen.

it's like when you was a little kid and and started playing football with friends just wanted catch the ball , dribble everybody and make a goal.. if you love football , you know what I'm talking about..and you know it's not easy even if you're a excellent player...Well messi is the only player today that can do that as a high professional level.
