@@trentigalaxy Apparently, because that’s what Prince wanted, because the Christopher Tracy character was basically an allegory of his own dark side. It’s been said the studio had him also shoot a happy ending and they really didn’t want him to end the movie with Christopher killed.
UTCM is one of the best executed whimsical, flight of fancy, slapstick movies ever. Prince often used the power of double entendres, contextual surrealism, and downright rule-breaking chaos to spin out the tale. He loved to clash the clever with the absurd, take creative liberties at will. This masterpiece cannot be judged by the conventional eye of the professional crtitcs above. All the key characters in the movie are a little story within the story. They all play a part in what maintains the status quo on so many levels - social, economic, cultural. Wealth & power. Stupidity vs ignorance (and the collateral of knowledge). The haves & have nots. And in the end, love trumps all, but doesn't always save the day. A very endearing film from start to finish.

I loved Under The Cherry Moon and Parade is still my favorite Prince album. When Under The Cherry Moon first came out, in 1986, I took a trolley from the suburbs to the city every day for 2 weeks and watched the film twice on each day. Some of the acting was cringeworthy. And, for each viewing there wasn't more than about 20 other people in the theater with me. But, regardless of what critics thought or if it failed at the box office, Under The Cherry Moon will always be a favorite movie of mine.
One of the most under-rated misunderstood movies of all time. It's hilarious. .. whimsical full of drama..thrills ..romance .. and just a fun movie overall. It's actually one of my favorite. this movie really showcase Prince's full personality and who he really was way more than just a dark ,erotic singer song writer like Purple Rain. Not to mention the scoring and soundtrack and the way the movie was shot. All freaking brilliant.
I have watched this film so many times to see what the critics dislike about it. There's nothing to dislike. From the fashionable clothing to the sophisticated soundtrack I couldn't help but love this film. Prince made Purple Rain for the men and Under the Cherry Moon was for the ladies. Prince was multitalented and will never be forgotten.
the cinematography and costume of this very classic film is very sophisticated for its time and Prince was extremely smart for letting it remain processed in black and white because it would have looked dated in color.

UTCM suffered from two major things. One it wasn't Purple Rain and Two, people just didn't "get it" at the time. I loved the movie the first time I saw it. I love Prince and his music and I love old movies, which is what this movie was trying to replicate. It was very underrated and only recently seems to be getting the love it deserves. I do remember seeing Siskel and Ebert talking about how much they loved this movie. I thought it was odd as it was a rerun after UTCM turned out to be a "flop." Can anyone find that footage? I swear they said it, but changed their minds when everyone else started hating on it like it was the Star Wars Prequels (which I also think are underrated).
to me it's a stupid question to ask someone if they lie (especially a Gigolo), so why answer. Christopher told her, what she heard from Tricky was not true, so to me that's just like answering her. The Music and Cinematography alone makes this film of value and to me if you've never known a Gigolo you might not enjoy this movie.
Under the Cherry Moon was a fun flick but not because it was good. It's one of those so bad it's good movies. It's really just a lot of nonsense with some great music blended in. Kristine Scott Thomas is beautiful and Prince has some swagger but I never believed for a second that they could ever be a couple.
I personally think Siskel and Ebert went a little overboard in their rough review of this great movie. I believe that Prince came up with the idea to create a fun movie and go to France with his crew to do it. His character Christopher Tracy in the film is no different than Eddie Murphy as Marcus Graham in Boomerang. Both characters were cool, confident, somewhat cocky gigolos who were knocked off their game by love and confusion. This is where the comparison stops though. I believe Prince wanted to just relax and have fun, which is very evident in many scenes. Plus, the fact that it was presented in black and white gave it even more uniqueness. No matter how you feel about the film, it was in a class by itself, with an incredible soundtrack. It is also evident that the scoring music in various scenes feels very Prince-like which is also unique.

@@RocStarr913 That's not the point. I am talking about human excellence in a universal way, that happens to, in this instance, come from an African-American perspective. The operative word here is "universal".
This is why you don't listen to the critics all the time. This is probably my favorite B-movie, and for its cult presence alone, it will play on screens for decades to come.
Funny thing: They reviewed Under the Cherry Moon on At the Movies, but then left that show to do Siskel and Ebert, so the Worst of 1986 was on the new show. Also, this shows that not all black and white films work.
Award fact Under the Cherry Moon was nominated for 8 Golden Raspberry Awards (also known as the Razzies) and took home 5 of those. It “won”: Worst Picture (tying with Howard the Duck), Worst Actor & Director for Prince, Worst Supporting Actor for Jerome Benton and Worst Original Song for “Love or Money”. The other 3 it lost were Worst Supporting Actress & New Star for Kristin Scott Thomas (the first lost to Dom DeLuise in drag for Haunted Honeymoon and the other against the six guys and gals in the duck suit in Howard the Duck, respectively) and Worst Screenplay (lost against Howard the Duck)
I have to agree with Gene Siskel on this one is when he was talking about the scene when Christopher Tracy (Prince) told Mary (Kristin Scott Thomas) that he is not a liar. Why could've he just say, "No, I would've not lie to you. And don't you dare raise that tone because it is extremely annoying to me." You do know that she sounded upset and angry when she asked him if he lies. Then she tells him that she can talk to him in that tone at him whenever she wants. I want everyone to listen to her angry tone of her voice again at the 3:39 minute mark. It sounds like that she is very upset and pissed off while talking angrily at him. I was going to get worried that she was going to order Tricky (Jerome Benton) to shut up and mind his business because it is a private discussion for her, Not him or Christopher. It ends where she continues her conversation with Christopher. But Tricky refused to mind his business because he was serious because he doesn't want Christopher to get in trouble.
lmao these just don't get it. i'm not even gonna get started. just wish they were at one of the parties so prince coulda put a jukebox on their table and started "bringing his world to them" ;)
I disagree with them on this one. I saw Under the Cherry Moon in theaters and both me and my sister loved it. I think the black and white photography, done in a sort of silvery, sometimes sepia tone, was absolutely gorgeous, and I loved the humor of it.

It was a good movie. It was funny and ahead of it's time. Critics do their job criticizing. Artists do their jobs having the vision to do great things that ordinary people can't realize yet.
The film would've faired better if the band where featured in different roles, and there were actual music sequences to lived it up in areas. Outside of the Girls & Boys party crasher scene, there is nothing in the film showcasing Prince's talents, rather only his flaws as an actor. Although Graffiti Bridge isn't a great film by any means, we do get to see Prince in more of a music context, and for that reason it is a likeable watch. In Under the Cherry Moon, Prince seems primarily interested inn grafting himself into the façade of Morris Day's character from Purple Rain. Perhaps he forgot who the real star of that film was.
It probably at least would have been more entertaining if it was a musical. The Prince songs were all really good. Prince was in way over his head trying to do a romantic dramedy, especially with such a bad script.
From 1986, ever since I bought the VHS tape, I have watched this film every year on Prince birthday since he was the director. This is a good remake of the heiress
I couldn't agree more with both Gene and Roger. This is a freaking goofy flick. I couldn't wait for Prince's next flick. And felt totally let down with this contrived crap. It's too silly and nonlinear in its execution. I never cared either way about Prince before Purple Rain. But couldn't get enough of him afterwards. After this flick, I hoped for the best next time, but prepared myself for the worst. And I wound up getting "Graffitti Bridge". No comment. But just like Prince's music history, you never knew what to expect his next outing. He didn't play to his fans expectations. On the contrary. More often than not, he saw what fans and critics expected, then was almost spiteful in what he'd do next. Don't get me wrong. You'll won't find many bigger Prince fanatics than myself. And I actually like the album "UTCM," as I do practically every music Prince recorded. I just don't think it fit into a movie well.
I admit I panned this movie when it was first released but in after watching it recently it's not that bad. Not great by a long shot but not as bad as when first saw it.
I disagree with them on all fronts because they have preconceived notions of the type of movie THEY thought he "should" be doing....not the kind of movie HE wanted to make! What separates " ...Cherry Moon" from those " old movies you don't watch." are two things: Prince and his music and that's more than enough for me! I love the movie!
Film wasn't shot in black/white, just converted into graytones.. I love this. movie - Prince was so talented and loved by all of us (except these two dry dudes)! 💜💜💜💜💜💜❤️
There was also an Anniversary release of the original color version some years ago. I missed purchasing it, and I can't seem to find it. I even wrote Netflix to request it, but so far no show yet.
As a devote Prince fan can't disagree with that assessment. Hurts me to say but this was a terrible movie and anyone who says different is blinded by their fanaticism for Prince.
The Russian Nightmare Not true. Some of us actually do find UTCM funny and entertaining. I think he did a great job with the movie. It’s very different and I appreciate it. He wasn’t afraid to try new things and created his art however he saw fit whether others understood it or not.
Some of us are fan of the types of movies he was trying to replicate. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean the movie's not goo or that others should feel ashamed for liking it. Some people just didn't get what he was trying to do and were disappointed that it wasn't Purple Rain 2. That disappointment colored their perception of the movie.
its realy not a bad movie if you dont expect the wrong thing. If you watch it as a B movie and try to enjoy it for what it is, its actually enjoyable and has some nice moments. Often more conventional films like this that may be more safely made are boring and forgettable. I dont think it was boring or forgettable. its kinda weird, which is good
He was in over his head. Not only was Prince saddled with a really bad script, but he clearly couldn’t act when he’s not playing himself. Plus, he directed the movie himself when the only experience he had behind the camera at the time was the music video for “Raspberry Beret.”
Princdidn’t expect you to catch the seriousness of that time period it portrayed. Did Fred Astaire ever make a movie that you wanted to see more than twice. It was a publicity stunt on a publicity stunt. Notice the over acting the almost colorless portrayal of a colorful character. That MAN brought color to black and white. No black women? neither did Fred Astaire. The music was charming and had some radio play. He portrayed a lovable real life cartoon character. Black women have never made a movie with Fred Astaire who this is compared to. Why should Prince? Besides black women didn’t come to see black women they came to see Prince. Jerome Benton was a side kick when prince upstaged him as a sidekick fun movie nonsense makes sense sometimes. He is not an actor not a movie star lots of people worked. Look these guys are talking about it Prince wins again. All publicity is good publicity! That’s what they say! Rip to prince and these guys too.
Why aren't there any black women in the movie why is he surrounded with white women first and foremost Prince surrounded himself with all the women of beauty no matter what their race was! So what if you did not have the type of women they thought he should have around them and why was he in south of France cuz he wanted to be!! Got a house in Spain with his second wife would be just let the children come and play all of his land and did everything for the families and do he was exceptional and accepted and loved globally! I think they were pretty Petty with this! Suckers hahaha peace and love Danielle Ferguson
The concept is around the stark contrasts and juxtaposition of black and white. The characters were from polar opposite backgrounds and cultures. The actual film was black and white. Asking about black women shows a lack of comprehension and could be equated to race baiting.
There were Black women in the film. French, Black, and Beautiful. At the birthday party of Mary Sharon, and at the club where Christopher Tracy played the piano.

"Do you lie" is a song. This venerable team of reviewers (Siskel and Ebert) really miss the nuance. And they certainly miss the soul, and the embedded blackness of the piece. This is a very corny review.
Lol.. unfortunately this is for those of us who understood to put on ur seatbelt and hold on for the ride..ur definitely right they didn't understand the set up for do u lie
Their job was to assess whether the movie would appeal to everyone, not just black viewers.
@@RocStarr913 they missed the essence. Typical.
@@RocStarr913 That's not the point. I am talking about human excellence in a universal way, that happens to, in this instance, come from an African-American perspective. The operative word here is "universal".
Favorite movie by this guy.
5:59 what’s he doing in the south of France?? lol
This is why you don't listen to the critics all the time. This is probably my favorite B-movie, and for its cult presence alone, it will play on screens for decades to come.
Why does it look like Princes role in Under the Cherry Moon was really meant for Morris Day
I love Prince. But I didn't care 4 UTCM.
“Wrecka Stow” 🎶
U took the words outta my mouth! 😂😂😂
Funny thing: They reviewed Under the Cherry Moon on At the Movies, but then left that show to do Siskel and Ebert, so the Worst of 1986 was on the new show. Also, this shows that not all black and white films work.
My go to movie when Im missing Prince.💗🕊️ Roger and Gene are hilarious though. Why is this a chase picture??!!!
Because there are often scenes with characters being chased around, which became a pretty common formula in commercial movies by this time.
Purple Rain was an excellent movie. under the Cherry Moon was an okay movie. The movie graffiti bridge was horrible. Those are my opinions LOL
Award fact
Under the Cherry Moon was nominated for 8 Golden Raspberry Awards (also known as the Razzies) and took home 5 of those.
Under the Cherry Moon IS my BOP!
lmao these just don't get it. i'm not even gonna get started. just wish they were at one of the parties so prince coulda put a jukebox on their table and started "bringing his world to them" ;)
I disagree with them on this one. I saw Under the Cherry Moon in theaters and both me and my sister loved it. I think the black and white photography, done in a sort of silvery, sometimes sepia tone, was absolutely gorgeous, and I loved the humor of it.
I am 6 minutes 20 seconds into the movie review and I just can't watch it anymore!!!!
Because me yelling at my phone is pissing my son off giggle giggle he's like Ma you know they can't hear you right that's!? I got so heated so angry then I let it go and now I'm going to go listen to some PRINCE peace and love Y'ALL
Danielle Ferguson of Detroit
It was a good movie. It was funny and ahead of it's time. Critics do their job criticizing. Artists do their jobs having the vision to do great things that ordinary people can't realize yet.
Da Ha, It was NOT good. Now apologize before I come over there and wash your mouth out with soap!!!
It was a real poop show! 💩
Prince definitely had ambition, but he was saddled with a bad script that he didn’t write and he really can’t act.
And this is why you shouldn't take movie critics serious.
Prince was ikon of his age, but this movie was totally b//s almost painful to watch. But thats the 80s for you
1:39 funny that he compared "Purple Rain" to "Saturday Night Feaver" when at least one WB executive suggested Travolta play Prince in "Purple Rain."
Omg this brings me back to my childhood. I even remembered that’s how Cheetos used to look in that vending machine. So 80s!
Them good ol' days when the movies weren't being pumped out weekly and just two guys were able to keep up on the reviews of what was out there.
Not to be bogus but.....
Under The Cherry Moon is still around.
That makes it exclusively appealing to Prince fans, not to the general public.
While it's a good movie it does have a bad script and weak acting.Prince could've had help collaborate with Scorsese hell MJ had him direct BAD
Siskel & Ebert were spot on with this one.
I agree with you in part, I feel Prince could have done better by playing as a wealthy lover disguised as a gigillo.
I even wrote Netflix to request it, but so far no show yet.
fumb ducks
Right
Rest in peace Prince
Chicago's own! Siskel & Ebert!
As a devote Prince fan can't disagree with that assessment. Hurts me to say but this was a terrible movie and anyone who says different is blinded by their fanaticism for Prince.
The Russian Nightmare
Not true.
Not true.
@@randomshotinthedark It is a bad script and it’s been documented even Prince came to that conclusion and knew the movie was a failure.
It was before its time
its realy not a bad movie if you dont expect the wrong thing. If you watch it as a B movie and try to enjoy it for what it is, its actually enjoyable and has some nice moments. Often more conventional films like this that may be more safely made are boring and forgettable. I dont think it was boring or forgettable. its kinda weird, which is good
Flashes of brilliance here and there don’t make a good movie. It makes for a good cult favorite though.
@@RocStarr913 yea but I dont consider cult movies bad. theres a reason they have a following and its usually because theres something good in them
I loved it, it's 1 of my favorite movies
I loved the movie and thought he was trying to show his humorous side.
He was in over his head. Not only was Prince saddled with a really bad script, but he clearly couldn’t act when he’s not playing himself. Plus, he directed the movie himself when the only experience he had behind the camera at the time was the music video for “Raspberry Beret.”
Siskel and Ebert never went to the Wrecka Stow.
The first woman you see is a black woman 🖤
Jerome was in "The Time"...not The Revolution...Roger
Do they know what comedies are not everything has to be serious
the movie is trash..
Even as a comedy, it’s weak.
It's a Classic
Saw this movie in 1986 and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. One of Prince's epic failures.
I like prince. But his movies are stupid
'..a black and white French film'
At 0:14 it looks like Genes bare tuchas is hanging out
Love love this movie
U got 2 men, critiquing something they can’t do. I have NO respect for critics. If u can’t do what the artist can do, then u have no say. NO ONE cares bout Siskel and Ebert, we’ll be talkin bout Prince for many years to come.
I disagree this was a good movie
💞💞
Me ouch...
Genuis
Just watched it again after all these years. Horrible. They showed the only good part in the movie with Prince doing what he does best, performing Girls & Boys
I'm curious....Is it anyone that's not a huge prince fan that enjoys this movie?
5:36 I lost it LoLLLLLLL
