My son Fabian participated in this 2010 race, I was his 1 man support team. We traveled on a shoe string budget from New Jersey. He finished 28 hours at age 17, in his Senior Year @ Annapolis. So proud, we had so much fun!!!
I had not heard of ultras before this film appeared in my RUclips feed about 3 years ago. At that time I was 100 kgs and had only ever been running for football back in my youth. This film inspired me to pick myself up,stop eating crappy food and to get out and run regularly. Since then I have ran 1 marathon, 6 halfs. And several shorter races. I am currently preparing for Berlin marathon this Autumn. And I'm not certain that any if this would have happened if not for this film. Thank you Anton Krupicka, geoff Roes and killian jornet for the participation in this amazing piece of ultra folklore
Years ago this movie was my intro to the sport. Most of my friends are now from this community. Really grateful to the people involved in the making of this beautiful film.
It's incredible how in the space of ten years the sport has changed so much. It no longer feels like a frontier, the domain only of eccentrics. Nowadays to have 4 strong runners at WS100 would be considered an extremely shallow field. We owe a great deal to the folks who pioneered ultrarunning and got it to where it is today.
Edward Scott I ran western States in 1987. Talk about the good old days. Hopefully running Leadville in August at 60. This was my first 100 and trail race.
I have a friend who told me about Ultra's about 10 years ago and I remember thinking he was crazy. But then he did the Ironman with a bone spur, after not being able to do the ironman because of a broken clavicle. I became a believer in the human will then. No, it doesn't seem crazy or eccentric anymore, it just seems awesome and possible.
Well, again, I find myself watching this amazing film. I don't even count the times I've watched it anymore but every damn time it gives me more inspiration. It's just freaking beautiful. Thank you so much to all of you who made this film and this event possible. ❤🙏
Best 100 miler film I've seen thus far. The emotions, the backstories. I have attempted 9, 100 miler races so far. 1 win, 3 finishes, 5 DNFs. And the DNFs were all piled right into the middle. It went bad for a long time before it started going better. This video perfectly describes how it is out on the trails. Its never over until its over.
just getting back into running... searched for running documentaries and came across this. Although I may never run 100 miles, I found this to be so inspiring. Fantastic documentary!
I ran WS100 this year. Harder than it looks! Finished in 27:40... TWELVE hours behind those guys 😜 Thx for making this available again... brought back a lot of great memories.
My grandpa was feed bad chicken noodle soup and got sick and only had 25 miles left.... I’m glad that you finished and what an amazing memory that you can look back at.
I got goosebumps at the end. What a race/documentary. To see Anton and Jeff embrace at the end is what sports is all about. Chapeau to everyone involved with this fantastic event.

You and Billy Yang should work together. This is once of the best documentaries I have ever seen. I am so fascinated by the 100 miler and the people who run it. What these runners can do is as amazing to me as someone sprinting for 26.2 miles for 2 hours. Simply, amazing.
Thanks Journeyfilm for putting on RUclips. I've bought it and watched it about 50 times, but now I can watch it on the big screen! Best running movie ever
Holy Smokes!!! Hard to believe how much has changed since then. It was fun to see how casual and "non technical" ultra running was back then. It makes today's ultra world look so high tech and professional.
I’m not even a trail runner and this film gets to me every time I watch it, which is a lot in the last year. Four different characters, all with a shot of winning, a brilliant documentary. You gotta love Anton’s style so what if there is snow, it’s no shirt all the way!
Watching because it's western states again this weekend....and far out things have changed since then. Crazy seeing Killian looking so young, and the quality of trail running has only gone up since then.
That was a really fun watch, many thanks for making it available! Many commented on the progress in the span of 10 years, in terms of film technology or competition. I would add that I’m so so glad, watching today's Golden Trail series for instance, that women are no longer side characters and are now fully part of the fun :-))
Absolutely love this documentary!! I’ve watched it now 4 times..the first time started listening to it on on a long run. Had to play agin so I could ‘see’ it! Inspirational, fascinating, entertaining, well done! Completely fell in love w each character’s personal passion for running… a familiar love for myself. Great film!! Sincere thank you! 🎉❤🏃♂️🏃♀️✅
Remember being pumped getting this on DVD shortly after reading Born to Run, the soundtrack on this gem is amazing M83 is my finishing song to every run/race back in the day! Very few excellent running documentaries when this was around, prior to this it was Without Limits from 1998 till this came out!
Thank you posting the full length feature! That period of ultras is the reason a lot of us got started on the trails. Geoff was on another planet during those days, because Tony was primed to win that sucker. Nobody was training like TK at the time. I find it funny that people are still offended by his simplistic approach and lack of gear & nutrition. He trained and raced like there was no tomorrow. He has some regrets about the way he trained, but it was and still is legendary. Kilian is Kilian. The best to ever do it.
Really an awesome historical documentary. Being a nobody solo trail runner, its refreshing to see that some of the elites in the sport are not much different than I, except they run much faster !
The idea of running WS100 in a dress shirt goes back to Mike Catlin, who won in 1979 and 1980. I recall a training clinic that he led, and one of us noobs asked him what kind of flashlight he carries... he famously responded "I plan to be finished before it gets dark". I always carried a flashlight!
Kudos to all the runners and the producers of this marvelous film. As an old man and a former marathon racer, it makes me seriously rethink going back to racing again. Well done to all and thanks for such a great inspirational video. Cheers from Philly
Thank you so much for showing us the background of so many pillars of our sport. Especially for the whole Gordy Ansleigh story. Awesome to hear it straight from the horse's mouth
I couldn't recover from when Ansleigh was like, "Would trail running have been invented if it wasn't for me? Who knows?" What a blowhard thing to say. Yeah dude, you invented running on non-paved surfaces. Sure.
commbir he did invent this sport though. That’s why Western States is the oldest trail ultra. I won’t even try to speculate on RUclips why this particular run of his was the catalyst of such a large movement, but it was. Does he have some pride? Probably. We all do. And I don’t wasn’t to be caught pulling the splinter out of another’s man eye before pulling the log out of my own. If having some pride means people shouldn’t like us, we’d all be without friends. So I’ll give him some respect, understanding he did invent my sport (at least in America, where I live), but I’ve got too much sin in my life to be willing to ridicule him for his
@@jeffostlind6225 Are you showing a little too much pride here but confusing it for righteousness maybe? Or does it not count if you're preaching?
