As an old timer I vividly remember the Steely Dan sound. Now, after all these years I understand something about why it sounded "different". Thanks for a beautiful lesson and such clear instruction!
Brilliant lesson, John. Well done. I’m an ongoing PWJ member, but RUclips and IG is how I find out about ‘what is next’ for me. So keep up the great work! Cheers!
I never understood the difference between sus2 & add2 before, now it seems so simple. I love that first inversion with 4ths in the right hand, what a beautiful sound.
Good lesson. I suggest adding one more note: The major 7, for a maj7 (add 2). You hear it in Dr. Wu, Midnite Cruiser, Josie, etc. Usually they kept 2 & 3 clustered regardless of voicing, but there are stacked 4ths as well, especially from FM on. Seriously, try that maj7 (add 2) chord (and construct chords using that scale) straight up & with inversions. You will immediately hear the essence of the Becker/Fagen sound.

Thank you so much!
Great lesson. Well paced and clearly explained. Thanks John
Dude that was their own inside joke & dry Steely Dan humor. Or just having fun with sus2 chords
Great video! The 3rd in the bass, with the sus2 on the right is a common David Foster approach in his slower ballads.

Simply beautiful
Ah - sus 2 no 3rd but yes 5th - Mu Major has 2 and 3 no 5th 👍
"Suspended" means you are held in suspence waiting for the appearance of the third which is eclipsed by the extra note.
