540Hp PDL Mustang 2 || Legendary V8 Saloon Monster

- This Monstruous ´76 Mustang comes from New Zealand, built by PDL Racing and hold Saloon Car records of multiple circuits during its career spanning from 1976 to 1979. It is a tubeframed, rear wheel drive Monster powered by a 6.0L V8 engine based on the rare aluminium Cleveland block fitted with a custom built Moldex crankshaft, Carillo conrods and Brooks forged pistons. The block is topped by a pair of modified Gurney-Weslake cylinder heads into which fuel is feed by a Formula 1 type Lucas fuel injection metering via slide type throttles. All this to produce around 540Hp in Naturally Aspirated form.
Power is transmitted through a multiplate Borg and Beck clutch to an aluminium cased Ford top loader 4 speed box. A 9 inch Ford rear axle is used with a solid spool diff. Brakes are a lockheed system identical to that used on the Can-Am McLaren sports cars. Weighing under 1000Kg, this was a machine with performance well beyond its time, and fortunately, it was rebuilt to its original form some years ago, and since then has appeared a number of times in different events to grace the public with its imponent presence and distinctive soundtrack. One of those occasions was this year at Leadfoot Festival where it was possible to watch it attack Rod Millen´s driveway.

The best looking 'Mustang II' I've ever seen.
Now, now ... In my teens I had a poster with a beautiful, sexy Mustang II Cobra surrounded by the original "Charlie's Angels" in my room. Although, thinking back ... maybe it wasn't the car that was so beautiful and sexy. ;)

I remember watching this car race at Bay Park and a static display some years later at Pukekohe.
I had a poleroid camera and used up a whole roll of film just on this car.

I had a '74 Mustang II with a built 302, a big block C4 trans (had to saw off the big bell mount to make it fit)(blew the stock one on first test drive, pff), Mr. Gasket ratchet shifter, Radio Shack stereo+EQ, a CB! The works. The panties loved it. Fun times. Wish I had a camera back then Lol..

What a holly nice classic retro American muscle car in the era of 70s-80s period men and this classic ford mustang ii or ford mustang ii king cobra was one of my favourite underrated ford mustang model ever in my top list.That sounds of ford mustang ii engine was so beast and monstrous sounds remind me like the best ford mustang model in the world,sounds remind like going to drag race track in straight road 200 meter miles per hour.
Amazing car, cant tell if the driver was really pushing it though it seemed pretty slow.
Its Mustang so handling is - shit - also not crash to ppls.

@@joe125ful Mustangs can be modified to handle the same as a smaller non muscle type car. They are obviously rear wheel drives of course. This specific car is said to have a "solid spool differential", which if I'm correct means that the axle is basically locked, both tires are getting 50% power at all times, even when cornering, a limited slip differential would behave similarly, but less aggressively by allowing a small amount of differential slip when cornering, mustangs are known for having limited slip differential, also known as posi trac. You cant enter and exit turns and corners as you would other vehicles. I'm sure it handles great, in the right hands. Your average race driver wouldn't be able to safely drive a huge, tube framed, hunk of metal with a RWD solid spool differential car as fast as you might like to see, especially on a tight course like this, an experienced rally car driver who prefers to enter corners sideways for car predictability reasons, would probably utilize this type of power and differential.
It's not good for twisty roads... not sure if it is good for anything else though. Other than making noise.

There is something about high-displacement naturally aspirated V8s that just cannot be matched anywhere else.
What it reminds me of is a slightly meaner Formula 5000 of '60s-'70s vintage.
Although I prefer high revving flatplane v8s, I have to agree that these ones sounds mean too.
Something about it like, low compression ratios and slow revs?
I don't care what anyone says, the Mustang II's were the best body style of Mustang in my opinion.

The gearbox isnt adequate for hillclimb. Something like a short gears 6 speed sequential sadev gearbox would bring it alive

Nice car but I don't see any mustang there. That's a built from scratch race car that probsbly doesn't have 1 bolt in common with mustang.
Then you're blind as a bat, the body from the firewall back is a mustang II (it just happens to have that body kit bolted on the back over the rear wheels). Of course it's going to be a bit different than the road cars as it's a race car, it's going to have a tube frame, roll bars, and the front is probably all fibreglass.
Seems like the gearing is set up for a tight course.
