There was actually a creepypasta featuring something similar. The man had taken an experimental drug. With it, time seemed to slow down and he was able to get stuff done much faster. However it backfired horribly. Time slowed to the point where even a process as simple as blinking felt like it took decades. His brain deteriorated like what's described here, to the point where he was pretty much reduced to a vegetable.

It's important the 8 hours be restful sleep too. Brain shrinkage has been seen in cases of Fatal Familial Insomnia with symptoms looking like dementia and as the name suggests it is fatal. People go mad before dying because sleep is that important to maintaining brain health.
That is not always so my friend. There are people get 4 hours sleep for years and decades and they in their 80's and 90's so I don't know where you think that will happen for everyone.

I’m a former addict and I used to stay up for days drinking and getting high, I didn’t even barely eat one week I literally ate 2 pop tarts then probably only got 8 hours of sleep at best in 7 days all while staying high as a kite. I used to hallucinate I thought people were in my apartment I could see them appear and disappear right in front of me I could hear voices 24/7 multiple people having conversations in my head and it wasn’t real. I’m two years sober and I never want to go back my first year of sobriety I slept and slept for days almost I hadn’t slept barely really in years. I go to the gym all the time now and actually have a good job that I’m good at. I can tell you lack of sleep is a bad thing but being high and drunk too is hell itself and I also went through DTS 5 times and almost had a heart attack and went to ICU one time
Society doesn’t get enough sleep Personally I’ve learned to cope with the constant fatigue feeling, my reason for staying up late (back when I was a teenager - as an adult with a job I don’t do this like I used to) is to maximize the amount of time but I have learned we just have to make the most of the time we have in between work and stuff
