I agree. No need to make a long confusing video abt it. Just be straight and to the point that he has awesome gear to purchase and give us the link. He starts video off saying digital is “nailing it” so off with the tube amps and cabs and then ends video with there is nothing like a tube amp in the room pushing air through speakers 🤷‍♂️

You guys take this stuff personal. I dont mean you are butthurt. He is passing off a LOT of information that has nothing to do with the the title. You realize he pists these videos for education? For people to hear amps theyll never own. To understand how to dial in different tones associated with specific amps. Plus he says if something falls short of the hype to prevent others from potential buyers remorse. Its not always about the vantage point youre viewing from.

Definitely made some great points here. I don't see the digital vs analog as a "YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE" sort of thing. Each is a good option for specific applications. Just did a bunch of fly-in dates with an AMT distortion pedal/Quilter rig and it was great. Got home and played a couple shows with my Splawn Quickrod and it was also great. I look at it less as a "which one is better" and more like "oh cool, now I have some flexibility to make certain situations a little easier".

A Quilter Microblock and a Joyo British are so cheap, one wonders why everyone doesn't have one. 45w on a modern stage is plenty for most.
AMT Legend series. The 2s are brilliant, a nice clean available as well as your Peavey, Engl, Mesa etc. Speaker emulated or not or both.

I always write with real amps. Moving air at volume makes the writing process more fun. I am going to hold onto most of my amps simply because its awesome to have a piece of tonal history. When I record I blend digital and analog. Both are awesome. At the end of the day an amp wall looks cooler than a laptop ;)

But, when I had the option? Lol I'll get in the booth with the half stack. YBA1 full throttle, in the room with the drummer.

Late last year I bought my first 5150 + a 212 JUST for the experience of owning one (Actually posted this on your belligerent group around that time). Everytime I turn it on and boost it it puts a smile on my face. BUT with that said, for recording purposes I have my plugins for riffs and ideas on the spot. Funnily enough, my favorite has also been the Josh Middleton suite. I love how incredibly meticulous and detailed that dude is as a player and a tone guru. His digital block letter model felt like my own block letter miced up in the best possible way. Technology really is incredible now, but I don't think I'll sell my 5150 anytime soon. It's too much of an occasion and spectacle to me just plugging it in and being assaulted with the sizzle, the low end, the air.

Honestly, I'm 55 years old, started playing guitar after a few lessons when I was 12, learned my basic chords, and really put more focus into my playing around 14 or 15 years old. I really enjoyed the thrash and hardcore scene in those days. My work took me around the world, and my playing was more in starts and spurts when I had time. I picked up a POD when it first came out, and I thought it was absolutely fantastic device for practice. I tried amplifying it, but it never really sounded right. I'm around all kinds of gear in my day job, and I'm still a tube amp guy. I believe that given 10 years or so, the digital modelling amps will finally be able to truly give guitarists a cost effective option that will be "easy" to use (because modellers are not easy for first timers at all), and tube amps will be musical centerpieces to show off to astonished guests. They will be , for the most part, Art exhibits in a historical context. Unfortunately, after about 50 years, there will be very few actually operational tube amplifiers, because nobody will know how to fix them, so the lack of maintenance will be their downfall.
Do I understand guys building lightweight, compact, modelling rigs for gigging and practice? Yes. But what the newcomers will miss, is a stage with 4x12 cabs double stacked from end to end, a 18 piece drum kit in center, envolping the crowd in a sonic wave form, as a mass of lunatics circle in the middle of the audience, while attempting to get on the stage, and immediately jump off into the hands of other crazed supporters. The 4x12 wall is kind of a movable Stonehenge, one night only, for the worship of great heavy music.
    I'll certainly miss that.

Even if a modeller can sound and feel exactly the same as a tube amp, I'll still always want the real thing cranked through a 4x12. I'll use the modelling stuff sure, it's super handy and convenient and practical. But it'll never replace a real life amp pushing massivr amounts of air. That's what gets me excited to play and write. I totally agree with you man

Solid State is a good middle ground. I have a modern Peavey Bandit 112 and it sounds good. Since it emulates a tube amp, it breaks up when you crank it. They're loud, sound great, are cheap to get used, and don't take up a ton of space. I use that as well as plugins and I don't feel as if I'm missing out on a real tube amp.

I'm in the middle of this situation I think. I have a Quilter Mach 3 200 watt head (weighs 4 lbs) that is analog solid state as a clean PLEXI platform and I use a Walrus Eras for high gain and boost with an overdrive to tighten the low end and it has worked for me. Kyle, thanks to you I took the plunge and got the Eras and the GupTech PedEQ pedal and they work amazing with my Quilter head. I plug the head to an IR and boom I am in my current high gain tone heaven. I can always change pedals if I want a different tone.

Live, a tube amp will never be replaced for the killer sound. Recording is where modelers are king and I'll stand by that and even in that place, axe fx and kemper are boomer modelers and now everyone uses plugins. It's also insanely easier carrying around a 50w amp than a huge modeler 6-8 unit rack flight case

    • @pwrmac7600
      @pwrmac7600 Год назад

In a professional environment I would say it is the exact opposite. Tube amps rule the studio because they aren't being abused by the rigors of the road, and modeling is taking over the road because of logistics. Shipping around a single rack is much easier and cheaper than shipping around amps cabs and mics. A lot of touring acts are already using modeling live, and I predict many more will convert every day.

I grew up using 5150's and Dual Recs out of V30 4x12s, but now I only own a helix and mostly run through VSTs when playing at home. Honestly, I love tube amps, but the value and quality of plugins are so incredible that now I see tube amps the same way I see luxury wall art. It looks cool, it makes you feel good for owning it, but it isn't practical in any way. So to me, the only reason I will ever buy another tube amp is to play it as a novelty or use it as a room or stage backdrop. It's unfortunate tbh.

Like what you like. That's the important thing.
Something people forget is that pretty much every piece of music you've listened to in the last 40 or so years has gone through an ADC and/or DAC at some point in the signal chain. Whether that's modelers or digital FX in the recording, DSP at the soundboard at a live show, or simply listening to music on a format different that what it was recorded to. There's no analog audio on the internet. CDs aren't analog. Many tape decks and turntables had digital componentry on them, especially modern ones. Even modern vinyl records themselves usually were recorded and mixed digitally and only sent out through the DAC in mastering. Short of some prohibitively expensive direct to vinyl/direct to tape gimmick for an album, the last truly analog sounds we've made were done back in the 60s and maybe the 70s.
The more i've lusted over gear, the more i've learned about how these pieces of electronics actually function, and the more i learned about how music is distributed to the listener, the more i realize that i care about the sound, not the thing that makes the sound. If I can get something that sounds like Three Days Grace's One X guitar tone (as an example), then that's what i want. To me, it doesn't matter if it's a VH4 and whatever cab Barry was using (along with all the post production involved), a solid state knock off amp, a VST plugin, or some other digital model. I'd play through a bottle of soy sauce if it got me that sound

I love both, they're all tools. I cant record loud tubes at home, so digital works, and in the mix, very difficult to tell the difference. Its a mental thing too. When im playing a modeller im not thinking of amp in the room tone, I'm thinking studio tone, so the whole air pushing thing does cross my mind. Then other times i need a live amp for a gig where in that case ill use the modeller in to the effect return and get the tube power amp stage, with the amp model im familiar with. Or if its a simple gig, just the amp and a little tuner. No need to pick a side, use the best tool for you for the moment!

This really seems to be a discussion about practicality. No one who owns a tube amp appears to be willing to go to owning zero tube amps. Some think it's more practical to take sims on the road with a bunch of different reasons. Some are saying that they can get the sound of owning many many heads, while only owning one or two. Many are saying that sims/captures yield better recording results than what they can get with a mic in their recording situations. Most people just don't have the money or space for the tube amp and cabinet collection that they would really like, but sims let them get a little taste of what that must be like.

Good video, I think the future is mostly digital. I went digital a couple of years ago, with a mk2 Katana head, then I got a GT-1000, and I've dabbled with iRig and Amplitube. It all sounds great at any volume, where as my old 30w Boogie sounded sh*t with the volume at 2 or 3. Even my current #4 Orange head sounds sh*t at 7w setting at neighbour-friendly volumes.
I have a bad back, so these days I go to the rehearsal studio with just my GT-1000 and a guitar. Happy days, and if the GT is good enough for Nita Strauss, it's definitely more than enough for me :D
Also (stealth edit!) less amps means more money for more guitars!

I remember looking at forums years ago and some of them were absolute dumpster fires. Everyone loved to bash on the Peavy triple X back then on forums claiming it was a jar of wasps.
I own a HX stomp. It's awesome. Great for silent practice and lots of cool experimentation to try.
I also own a 6505+, a triple X, a 5150 III, some mini amps, H&K Vortex and an Orange CR120.... people can enjoy both. I think we're just a silent group that doesn't get into pointless online fights.
    Just my thoughts/opinion

Hey wait. Im a fence walker. I love tube amps and i love some of the latest digital offerings. ToneX is on my radar. Still interested in the mooer preamp live. But i dont plan on selling my tube amps any time soon. Definitely not selling my 100 watt el34 evh head. Maybe sell the others eventually. But ueah they can be troublesome. Yeah they are heavy. But there is a certain novelty to micing a real amp and cab. Do i think its "better"? Yes, no, maybe... who knows?! The line is so blurred now, i dont think it matters anymore. If you like amps but hate lugging them around, have an amp at home and bring digital to gigs. Kinda where im headed now myself. I have my tube rig kicking ass but i dont wanna bring it anywhere so im looking to invest in a tonex and a couple seymour duncan powerstage's (i like running stereo).

Great vid Bro. I'm an analogue guy but I do own a Positive Grid Bias Amp 2 . Everything out there can be used in many different ways. The one big difference I see is that using the modeling gear in a live situation can be a nightmare if the FRONT OF HOUSE tech isn't familiar with how to deal with mixing a direct feed. In DETROIT we've got an army of HELEN KELLERs at the helm. Very few sound tech are capable of actually delivering a good mix, let alone, a blend of digital and anologue feeds. The good sound techs in Detroit are busy. The rest....well...those are the ones that punish the audiences in Detroit. So, for as much as I'd like to use a modeling amp in a live situation, it's pretty scary because of the lack of skill in audio reinforcement here. Good luck everyone.

For tidy, lower weight, lower cost touring, recall, sync, digital rigs win. Convenience however, is a demon. Demons feed on easy meat, control etc, so in the words of Philip K. The tactile realm is a lovely place...you actually learn something. :)

It wasn't complete garbage but it definitely didn't replicate the amps it was trying to sound like. That being said I have seen leaps and bounds in technology as of late and i honestly believe that within the next 10 years the chore of lugging around heavy tube amps and the exorbitant costs associated with them will be a thing of the past. Not to mention the maintenance costs that come with them. If and when digital amps can successfully duplicate the warm overdrive of a tube amp, I'll be the first on board. It will be a win for everyone. Everyone except for boutique amp makers. The sound of their $4,000 amp will be available for free, as a download.

Hey Kyle, I can see your point. I have played guitar for 30 years now, and seen trends come and go. I do not think these digital products are going away. I have a BOSS Katana, and it is amazing. I have tried the Helix, and AxeFx. They are very good as well.
But if you are a recording artist, I would hold on to your gear. At least some of it. Sometimes an amp sim just doesn't cut it, and analog gear can give you the "feel" that makes you get a perfect take while recording.
The Neural Amp Modeler is amazing (and FREE!) and it works just like the ToneX. But it is so close, that i cannot tell the difference anymore. So when I go to record? It will be the NAM app.

Only about half way into the video as of leaving this comment, but I need to offer this before it leaves my brain:
I don't think tube amps will ever go away. The ease of access for digital amps is amazing but they always need a reference point. If that reference point stops being made, then the digital amps will take a massive dive which will then require the main analog amps to be made again. I feel it's a symbiotic relationship. I am an avid Tonex enjoyer, but the Tonex isn't worth anything without the amps it profiles.

I can’t have the gear I’d like housing here and my budget won’t let me. I’m not good at figuring out how to make big money enough to rent or buy a house where I could have a real drum kit, amps, cabs and everything to play loud as the duck I want. So I’m ok with amp sims and so. There’s no one around here to put a band of my likes together so, that’s it for me, I barely bother to finish tracks, I just play and record some riffs and lately play drums (e-drums) on them and have a blast. There was a time when people had to memorize phone numbers; now people sometimes forget their own. Point is, just because a "plugin" can duplicate the tone of one's gear, doesn't teach you how to achieve that tone in the first place. I find the convenience of having it there already will have unforseen affects on future guitarists as a whole. Then again, whom am I to judge.
