Thing about Turkey in NATO is that they were admitted simultaneously with Greece as a "thank you" for what they'd done in Korea and an acknowledgement of the fact that they have fought a lot of wars with Russia/USSR/Russia. Between Greece and Turkey there is a really substantial tank and artillery park, but they're all primarily pointed at each other with a provision to mutually pivot to face north/northeast. And then strategically, if there was a provision in the treaty to expel an existing NATO member, and if it was used against Turkey, just think where Turkey would have to turn for security and how awkward that would make the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean if conventional shooting started.
Where would Turkey have to turn to for security? No one, lol. The Soviet Union is gone. Black sea access isn't as important as it used to be. Plus, I would really like to see someone trying to stop the 6th fleet from going anywhere.
@@ΣτελιοςΠεππας the Soviet Union is gone, but Russia and the CSTO are there. Granted, the Russian experience in Ukraine has shown us how little that matters now, but the Russian experience in Ukraine also shows that Turkey without NATO would have a reason to be concerned about its security. Who knows, in an alternate timeline Turkey might have to negotiate with Greece about Cyprus and Sweden about the Kurds to get into NATO after February 2022.
@kemarisite Bruh Russia ain't a threat to Turkey. There is no shared land border anymore, and the Turkish navy can handle the floating turds the Russians have in the Black Sea. Turkey is not under danger of attack from anyone.
I'm really, really tempted to build a model of Grandpa Buff with exoatmospheric upgrades, including replacing his engines with miniature warp nacelles a la the Runabout from DS9...
America: Yeah. We lose war games all the time. Our F-22s and F-35s lose all the time in practice… Russia: Ha! Because your wonder weapons are not so wonderful. America: … that’s the point of practice. We already know the situations in which we can win. We need to figure out all the ways to lose so we can never end up there in an actual fight
Yep, the war games that people like to point out the US losing in are ones that the US is intentionally handicapping their assets to simulate a worst-case scenario in. The whole idea being that it's better to find potential weaknesses in our stuff during practice with our allies and be able to develop ways to counteract those weaknesses. It also has the additional benefit that it lets our allies get practice against really high-end military assets, improving their overall ability to fight whatever our enemies may have, especially if it doesn't stack up with our stuff. The purpose of war games is to let our military see how an adversary may take advantage of the worst situations while allowing our allies the chance to train against some of the best military tech on the planet.
I like how it turns into "okay so what should we do in this scenario?" "Umm, fire whoever let this equipment get in such bad condition and use one of the 50 others we have available on this ship alone?"
We intentionally handicap ourselves to test out worst case scenarios to shore things up and hammer out the kinks before it has to be used for real. On top of that when all your training is for worst case senarios, you're ready to handle the regular shit because it will feel like easy mode and any actual bad problem will be like something you did before. it's crazy that no one else does it this way.

I went to Turkey 15 days after 9/11. They were the Host Nation for a NATO Training Exercise. For the most part, they LOVED us. There were of course, exceptions. I and a Brit MP (HI, I was a BF for the U.S. Army!) got sent as liason with the Turkish version of the PMO. The only thing I really did not like? The way they treated their Soldiers. They were primarily a conscripted force, and they served 18 months. They really haven't changed that much, but at least they are building high tech stuff. It just makes me feel like they don't belong in NATO. BUT. At least they decided to continue with the mission of the NATO exercise. The other countries that showed, andall the NATO members were supposed to participate were, besides the aforementioned Brits and Americans: Italy, Germany, Hungary, Belgium. I actually had a decent time over there, and one night we picked up the BBC reports of the bombing campaign in Afghanistan.
@@jdluntjr76226 You may need to look at how US treats Turkey. I mean, it's pretty hard to be friends with guys who constantly supply and protect groups like the PKK and PYD, which are against us, orchestrate coups every decade, refuse to sell us equipment, and then get mad at us for acquiring it from other sources like Russia. They even take back their air defenses when we face a threat of attack. Wonderful friends and allies there guys!
I will point this out, they aren’t just modernizing their equipment, but their army as well. They’re leaning away from conscription slowly and transitioning into a more conventional and active force.
I'd attribute a good 60-75% of our current problems in the US to Reagan bumbling through the White House, and I think even that's showing a lot of restraint. Dude was a political calamity of monstrous proportions.
Reagan was the epitome of picking the worse option for societal change and then opening the flood gates for why normal people can't afford houses but Elon Musk can buy Twitter on a whim.
Yeah, I'll never get the admiration for Reagan. A lot of the things people are complaining about today are a direct result of him and his administration, but those same people put him on a pedestal for some reason.

I thought war games were like your Dad teaching you to swim by shooting your knees out and throwing you in the middle of a lake from a helicopter 50 feet in the air
I will happily disparage Reagan because "trickle down" was bullshit. Also, it's not a Star Wars laser unless it goes "pew" in the vacuum of space. Does SK's laser go "pew" in space? No? Then shut up :P Also, while I don't agree with everything Israel is doing, the strike on Iran was an impressive show of US tech :D Final thought, lasers are often, but they have a little issue with anything "over the horizon." For now, I think I'll go with the SSGN (lasers also don't go through water well).
Tbf, when we actually do start fighting wars in space, I doubt the ships are gonna make dive bomber noises like in Star Wars. Nor do I imagine we’ll see fiery explosions and fires in space like in The Acolyte. Sort of the problem with fighting in a vacuum, and I ain’t talking about a Swiffer. Could still make a Death Star and we may also get laser guns one day, so it’s a bit of take and give.
no such thing as "trickle down" economics. that was the label the left put on it to make sound unpalatable. and those policies worked very well for all levels of the economy. don't fall for the propaganda.

As a Turk, we dislike US, yes but have a more complex relation with Europe. We used to be a great US ally but honestly US did us dirty in many occasions as well as Germany. Ahh, Regan, the reason the US survived the Carter administration. Look, he was no saint, and did plenty of things wrong, but seriously, talk to someone who remembers Carter. There is a reason Regan won by a landslide
Turkey is basically in NATO so we wouldn't have to reignite a century-old feud between them and Greece over the Bosphorous Strait. We basically slapped a NATO sticker on them and said "hey, you're part of the big boy league, now stay in your corner and don't bother anyone - especially not Greece." We... Somehow didn't expect Russia to ingratiate themselves with the Greeks and politically undermine their country. Guess that's our Achilles' Heel.
The way I understand US War Game doctrine (which is fuck all. I'm not even USMIL adjacent), is we always put ourselves at the disadvantage when starting. Like I've read that every time an F22 has been "killed" it was a dogfight where it started with the aggressor on its 6. I can't even imagine a world where the F22 loses in BVR engagements. As a matter of fact, I refuse to.
Its like that in normal training too. In BCT and AIT when we have opfor they are always given ridiculous advantages, and you get to learn every little detail you did wrong from the front leaning rest position. Soldiers don't get to win until its an actual real firefight. Not going to lie, but it felt a bit abusive... but the results speak for themselves.

It's too bad things are the way they are now.
We just have a lot of people and some of them are a little deranged But so far i have heard nothing but good things from people that stationed in incirlik
Honestly I'm still kind of surprised that people view Reagan in such a positive light given that we still feel the ramifications of some of the stuff that his administration did to this day from things like the war on drugs or the idea of trickle down economics which didn't actually work out in practice. Kind of an average president honestly like some good some bad not really one of the greats
Sure, he won some and he lost some. Everyone does. Compared to Carter, Regan's losses were minimal. There is a reason he won 2 elections by landslides.
Because Jimmy Carter was just THAT BAD that Reagan got the clear. Also technically Nixon started the "war on drugs" but it was an after thought and more going after hippies (and they deserved it) than being what Reagan turned it into. Also I had a middle school teacher who was annoyed by Pres. Reagan because his name was the almost identical so his last name was always mispronounced.

Reagan - Reaganomics: failure. War on drugs: failure. Military policy: I'm not as educated on that but I'd call it neutral at best. Public speaking: Champ. Face it: Reagan wasn't that great; people view him favorably because of his jokes and he helped bring down the Berlin Wall. He wasn't terrible, but not a top-tier pick for leadership, though I think the only president I like from the last 50 years would be Carter.
Hell he didn’t even contribute much to the wall. That was just Soviet mismanagement and communications cock ups. Look it up, it’s actually hilarous. Carter was, from every account, a good man in a bad position. Dude's 100 years old and still doing great work. Folks act like the POTUS is freakin' emperor when he's little more than a policy director.
The fact that Reagan authorized sales of weapons to Iran after Carter spent half his presidency and all of his presidential goodwill to have the hostages be freed in Iran irks me...
He didn't do dick about the Berlin wall. He just took credit for something that happened because of how things were shaking out naturally over in Germany.
Wouldn't that be Carter? Though if you want the original sin, it was whoever took us off the gold standard. That's ultimately why you can't afford to live. Fiat has to inflate since it's not real money. Rate management only slows the inevitable. Every policy since then was just making the Fiat problem worse. It all goes back to that moment.

Think of any videogame you've ever played. It's more fun when the bosses and puzzles give you a little bit of a challenge - you have to figure it out, you have to find the weak spots, but you can still use your skills to win.
However, when you've played the game several times, now you've mastered those skills and bosses become less of a challenge and less fun, but more like a speed bump on your way to get to the next dungeon or mission.

America: Yeah. We lose war games all the time. Our F-22s and F-35s lose all the time in practice…
Russia: Ha!

To be fare, Turkey is more NATO member than many of other member nations. Join most of the peace missions, air policing missions etc.

@@jdluntjr76226 You may need to look at how US treats Turkey. They even take back their air defenses when we face a threat of attack.

I could NOT have put it better!
War game losses just show how honest and willing to learn a military can be.
Turkey is basically in NATO so we wouldn't have to reignite a century-old feud between them and Greece over the Bosphorous Strait.
We basically slapped a NATO sticker on them and said "hey, you're part of the big boy league, now stay in your corner and don't bother anyone - especially not Greece."
We...
The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in combat

But I'm Canadian, so like our prime minister was?...Jean Chrétien?, I always forget and i even forgot Stephen Harper was our prime minister for like the early 00's, thought we went from Jean Chrétien To Justin Trudeau.
Nah the Prime Minister through most of the 80's in Canada was Mulroney, Cretien was more Clinton/Bush Jr Era :)
The only people who consider him "one of the worst" know... very, very little about US presidents.
Watching W Bush trying to put on a rain poncho at Trumps inauguration, It was freaking hilarious
