5:32 I think the reason you won a decisive victory despite being vastly outnumbered (112 ships to 60) was that you had 20 galleys while the Spanish had none. Ships have combat width in the same way that land units do, only a single heavy ship takes up multiple slots. Galleys have both a smaller width and a combat bonus on inland seas, like the Mediterranean. Thus a larger number of galleys were able to concentrate their fire on smaller numbers of heavy ships that formed the first line. Having an admiral with a two pip shock bonus while Spain had no leader at all also helped. This is a good example of why a navy should be balanced in ship composition and suited to the nation's needs. Galleys are dirt cheap and a large fleet of them can be maintained by even a small power as long as they have enough sailors. In everywhere galleys are worse than heavy ships, i don't care about your experience the stats for heavy ships and galleys prove 1:1 heavy ships are better. They're more durable and have the galley's damage bonus permanently. Theres loads of reasons for why you won and it wasn't because you had galleys and he had heavy ships. galleys are much cheaper and have better value overall so it's a lot easier using galley's while having a large land army.
NetherPrime In a recnt patch they made heavies take up 3 combat width instead of 1. That means that only 9 heavies can engage simultaneously without a maneuver admrial, while 27 galleys can.
