Never saw Van Helsing as a franchise starter. It was just a movie that wanted to mix all the monsters. Not all movies with an open finale are meant to have a sequel or kickoff a franchise.
At least it had no loose ends, and it had a nice animated prequel featurette. Besides, I can't imagine Gabriel Van Helsing fighting a big bad that isn't Dracula.
The Ender's Game book is pretty damn good, especially if you like what you saw from the movie! The Josh Allen's fiancee bit made me laugh, great video.
Van Helsing was one of the first movies I ever saw in theatres. We were incredibly poor so going to the movies was rare for us and god it blew me away. It was the coolest thing 8 year old me ever saw. It was about a year and half before my mom passed away and I remember it fondly. A couple of years ago looking through my stuff I found the ticket stub in my moms old things. Thank you for taking me mom it's a movie I'll always hold dear to me ❤ P.S. I was a huge Cirque Du Freak fan and I will never forgive them for what they did with that 💀
I always step up to bat for Van Helsing. It's a soft spot for me. Badass monster hunter with a sick hat-&-duster combo, plus that crossbow rock. I think it could work really well continuing as an animated movie tbh
The Cirque Du Freak book series is my favorite book series of all time. I’ve tried watching the movie twice and couldn’t get through it either time. I’m currently working on my own screenplay adaptation of the books, writing it as a series like the Netflix version of A Series of Unfortunate Events I plan to pitch to NBC Universal as a show for Peacock, as Universal Pictures still own the film rights to the books.
The problem with Van Helsing???? None. The bar was too high twenty years ago; moviegoers wanted some artistic merit and a certain tone in the movies. VH wasn't dark enough for a horror movie but it wasn't a straightforward action movie. It didn't have a particular audience. If it was released today it would make a billion dollars.
I personally really liked Mortal Engines. The plot was definitely all over the place and was hard to keep up with but overall it had one of the most interesting ideas for a world/story of the last 10 years. I think if it were made into a tv show now, it could actually do well. Also Hugo Weaving is one of my favorite actors of all time so there's that too
Great video and so glad I Am Number Four was on this list. Yes I was one who mentioned that movie. Never would have guessed that Van Helsing would have been on this list.
I would love to see you do a breakdown about the Hannibal franchise, films & especially the nbc series. The show, Hannibal, is definitely an art show, thematic, humorous but still dark (best way to describe it is a dark/gothic romcom cooking show disguised as a psychological horror police procedural). I don’t see people cover it enough, even more so since it got cancelled early, but could still get its next season (the writer & actors are still game), but would love to see your take on it!
You listing the vampires Assistant was a blast from the past tbh. I read the books in middle school and I was very disappointed with the movie but at least we have the manga Adaptation. How thinking about it the series could work with an animated show, or an anime Adaptation would be way to fitting given the nature of the books.
Until you mentioned it here I had completely forgotten about I Am Number Four. I remember being really exited to see where the story went. The movie itself was pretty flawed, but the underlying story was interesting (and, yes, I could read the books, but they seemed to YA to devote real time to reading instead of a couple hours to watching a movie ...) I think our daughters read and enjoyed the book series though.
If you make another one of these videos, i would add the Mummy 2017 and Dragon Ball Evolution. The later of which is infamous in the Dragon Ball fandom.
Considering two of these are my favorite book series. One being I Am Number Four (the entire series) and the other being Ender's Game... I Am Number Four was written in movie form extremely rushed, jumped to conclusions, and generally seemed like those who made the movie skimmed the book. A ton of story and character errors everywhere. Ender's Game suffered the same fate. Me and my mom read it and then when we saw the movie, so many plot points jumped up so suddenly and we kept going "already?". It's good as a standalone movie without considering the book. But considering the book, the movie takes out so many important developments for the characters, especially Ender. So by the end of the movie, Ender's journey felt hollow and unfulfilled properly. It's really a shame cause these works could be such incredible adventures if put into the right hands
Hot take - I remember loving the Host when I was younger… and still loving it to this day 😂 Is it Oscar worthy? No of course not, but it’s up there with fantasy/dystopian romance stories of the time
I was obsessed with the I Am Number Four series as a teenager, and I think the first book is actually the weakest. Starting with the second book, the world expands so much and you go back and forth between different numbered characters' perspectives instead of just John's high school drama. I think if they did a Sense8 style TV show (but less adult lol) where they introduced multiple perspectives off the bat, that would be way more interesting
Ugh The Dark Tower was one of the most disappointing cinematic experiences I've ever had. The books were incredible, my favorite stories by far. (They are NOT horror) There's a new series coming from Mike Flanagan who is a massive fan, and has done some wonderful adaptations of King's works. The Dark Tower is one of the only movies I actually think is bad. It's not just poorly adapted, it's a poorly written movie in general. I hate that film so much.
I thought Ender's Shadow would make an excellent movie. It's from the viewpoint of the character "Bean", who was the smallest of the group. It goes through his story of being an orphan, living on the streets, then being allowed in the school and seeing Ender's rise and being there with him. REALLY good book.
Seeing Beautiful Creatures on this list reminded me of Fallen... I never watched the movie or read the book, but it looked like something younger me might've been into, haha.
Havre de Grace, Maryland has a comics and movie shop that also has a film memorabilia museum in it, and they have a ton of the costumes from Beautiful Creatures. I said something to the effect of "wow I haven't thought about this movie in years" and my mom shushed me because she thought i'd offend the shop owners lmao
The closest and truest to the source material a movie is the better it does and The more things you change and rip out or flip the worse the movie will do. But that is a lesson Follywood will never learn and that is due to arrogance in thinking that a great story that is worth making a movie about will be made better with DEI and self inserting current drama to make a point that has nothing to do with the story being told.
Re: I Am Number Four and Beautiful Creatures, I have long argued that Hollywood's obsession with Young Adult adaptations was completely misguided from the get-go, and the money just wasn't ever there. Twilight, The Hunger Games, and The (first) Maze Runner were outliers, who commanded /most/ of the available attention at the times of their releases, and less-popular (or well-made lol) movies didn't stand a chance to begin with. This is a subgenre with an astounding number of bombs, disappointments, and cancelled sequels, but I see it as a structural problem as much as- if not more so than -an adaptational one.
I absolutely LOVED The Host as a kid Watched it repeatedly, made everyone I knew watch it Was really neat seeing it included here, had no idea it was an adaptation, least of all from the Twilight author
Oh, Cirgue du Freak... I'm not surprised you didn't like the film, neither did I, and I've read (and own) all of the books. They absolutely butchered the plotlines in every regard as well committing the sin of shoving plots from multiple books together - you know the big reveal that Steve is a Vampeneze under Murlough? Yeah, that's not something that happens until the 9th book in a 12-book series. It's one of the biggest reveals in the entire series - and actually has nothing to do with Murlough. In fact, book-Murlough is a one-off villian from the 3rd book and actually serves as an early introduction to Vampeneze, who don't become a mainstay until around book 7. The books are also much darker and more gruesome than the film, it's a wonder they got approved as children's books. I cannot begin to describe to you how much of a let down the film is. That being said, I've grown to be a lot softer on the film these days. It's not a good film, it sure as hell is not a good adaptation, but it is a silly film that can entertaining and actually has it's moments. The part of the fight between Crepsley and Murlough when they're just chucking the same knife back and forth at each other and licking their wounds is great.
20:47 the Host is one and done as far as I know. I really liked the book and disliked Twilight. It really gave me “animorphs but the bad ending” kind of vibes, where if the aliens had won
I don’t know if the John Carter and the Prince of Persia movies (both form Disney 😒) were supposed to have sequels or just be one-off films, but I really liked them and I think they never really got a chance! I know a lot of people didn’t like either of them, but I recently learned that there are also a lot of people that did like them! so… that’s that
The sad thing about The Host is that the book is very good but the film nerfed it. Took out all the good bits cast actors with no chemistry. They just messed it up badly which was very sad!
Seriously, no Van Helsing fan has heard of its awesome prequel DTV animated featurette "London Assignment"? That's the first time he fights Mr. Hyde, and the film cast returned for it.
You made a couple of errors when referencing movie profits in this video, so in case you don't know: Movies need to make around 2.5x their budget to be profitable. This is because budgets don't include additional costs (e.g. marketing), and because box office earnings don't all go back to the studio - movie theatres and distributors all take their cut which adds up to about 50% of ticket sales (and much more for international grosses). So if a movie with a $200 million budget makes $250 million at the box office, it did not barely make profit - it actually lost A LOT of money. Even if that movie made $550 million, it could still have lost money if the marketing was bigger than usual or if most of the revenue came from foreign markets. It's honestly baffling we haven't figured out a better way of tracking revenue for movies. Great video as usual though!
Respect to having Enders game in here. Love that movie and it always felt unique to me. I wish we had gotten a sequel. Aye put some respect on Children of the Corn tho😢😂
I loved Van Helsing it’s one of my favorite movies in this genre. I think the thing tho is that even tho there were some unanswered stuff it felt like an overall complete story. Like it never felt like it needed a sequel cause what else was there to do.
17:54 Beautiful creatures is not for everyone. While the book is better, it does take a while to get to set up the ending. I suggest you read the book if you have the time
Oh man, I remember seeing Van Helsing in theaters and thought it was absolutely awful lol maybe I would enjoy it more nowadays after knowing that it's supposed to be campy, but when I saw it the first time I literally wanted my money back for wasting my time
Stephenie meyer host is a flop book 2, I think she picked up the adult pen and started writing a story she couldn't eloquently develop, all the conversations are weak and the romance is dull.
In I am number 4. John is a species of people called Loric. From Lorien. The others trying to kill him and others like him are called Mogodorians. I know, who cares? Just had to say.
