You should definitely continue this series, it's quite enjoyable to watch!
I like the video style especially given you must write a lot as an academic and psychologist. A few questions:
1) As someone who writes professionally, do you get 'writer's callus' and does the OMAS 360 prevent that completely?
2) Do you worry about the combined worth you are carrying with you in case of losing them?
3) When you are taking notes in a therapy session, what is your preferred nib size and what kind of paper do you use? (I'd like to know this since aspiring psychiatrist)
Thank you so much, if you answer in a video, please indicate so I can find it.
I heve never developed a writer's callus. I do think that if one were to develop one, the 360 probably wouldn't stop it from happening, as there's still a lot of contact between finger and pen. I've never really worried about value, but I do lock the pens up if I leave my office. I don't do therapy, but if I see participants, I like a finer nib, because it tends to be less picky as to paper. I usually just use work-supplied (yet surprisingly fountain pen friendly) paper.
I wish I could carry pens like that to work, I fear for their safety. I typically rock an M TWSBI 580ALR in the clinic and an F ECO-T in the hospital. Dont' need to refill them for weeks sometimes and if something bad happens to them it doesn't hurt so bad :)
Lots of fun and very enjoyable. Always find your videos informative. Keep them coming!
Years ago, Fighting Knives Magazine had a recurring article, "The knife that I carry" that operated on a similar premise (and it was the highlight of each issue. Take a famous person who is a knife fan, and ask them what actually found its way into their pocket, and why. Excited you're doing something similar for pens-what's good or interesting enough to make it out the door with you. Well done.
lymantria10 Thank you!
Excellent series, I look forward to more. Also great to see the writing samples with the inks you've chosen.
Yes, I'm very much a fan of this video
Yes, yes, yes Broer! I think it would be fascinating to discuss not only pens, but also notebooks, writing pads, portfolios, etc., that you use and/or have used and that you recommend. I personally use different notebooks for different projects, and let me tell you, they have come in infinitely handy when referring back to my notes for decisions made by the team and things like that. People always come to me for my notes because they're not only comprehensive but efficiently organized so that I can easily locate the topic in question. The key is having the right pen and paper to facilitate the note taking process.
Please do more in this format. Thanks SBRE
Very nice indeed; I love the idea and the format - more please!
I loved the video. It isn't necessarily useful but it is fun to watch and that's why I keep coming back to your channel.
Yes; enjoyed this format of video. Thank you.
Like the format Dr. Brown. I go back and forth on my brown inks between the MB Toffee Brown and J Herbin Lie de The. To my eye on an uncalibrated computer screen, the ink you called SBRE Brown looked similar to the LDT.
Great fun. Interesting insights. Keep it up. Glad you reminded me of the Omas 360.
I like the format.
Did I enjoy this? Yes. Do I want to see more? Yes. Thanks
This was fun. Definitely do more!
I don’t use fountain pens often at work, but I carry 4 pens in a pouch at all times. 2 are always inked and always with blue and black ink. They’re a TWSBI Vac 700R with black ink (Pelikan Brilliant Black) and my Custom Heritage 92 285$ a blue ink (Iroshizuku Ama-Iro at the moment). Their other 2 pens are just whatever I choose for that day.
Yes please continue this series. The one other thing that I think would be very interesting would be what kind of note books you use. Thanks a lot for what you do.
Well done. Good stuff. Just do it.
Great Video Stephen. I vote for more!!!
Great series....Please keep doing it.
this is a good series... it allows one to see a comparison of several pens....
I have a Stipula Gaudi pen with a Titanium nib and while I like the pen and the flex, the nib seems mushy, but then the first semi flex nib I used was in Noodler's pen.
Really enjoyed this video. Nice to see what others are carrying. Thank you
This was a great idea loved it but as another viewer already said I'd watch any video you put out I'm fairly new to this pen mania but I did manage to get the Classic LB5 in the brown #00
Mary Harper That's a good score :-)
Excellent!!
This format is fine. Enjoyed it very much.
Enjoyed this Stephen, would happily watch more of these
Can we have another vlog, Stephen? Holland is a beautiful part of the Netherlands.
Nice, waiting for next chapter 👍
I love the video format! An occasional update on your carry would be a fascinating view. Thanks for the entertaining video as usual
Please do continue this series. I'm drooling over these lovely pens--especially the Omas 360.
Fabulous video, like the format and very informative
love the 360s... found a BP version and have the smaller not Grande FP but man the fountain pen grande is terrific... funny too how some love the triangle and others not so much! NICE pens and as always a great show
Like the video. Like the content, like the format, and like all the information. Thank you and keep em coming.
Very enjoyable! Great new video format :)
Fantastic Video Stephen Beautiful Pens & Ink. Keep up the great work. Nick.
+Nicholas Aarons Thank you!
Would be interested to see an update on this
I take a red Jinhao 159 with a Goulet 1.5mm italic nib. Currently enjoying it with R&K Salix.
Thanks Dr. Brown. I always find it interesting to know what other people carry. I have an original OMAS 360 but It would be unlikely for me to take it to work. I fear losing my pens or having one go missing so the pens I take to work are TWSBI Diamond 580 Fine, last few fills were with J, Herbin Eclat de Saphir, TWSBI Eco (black) 1.1 Stub with Diamine Oxblood, and occasionally either a Lamy Safari (F) or a Jinhao 750 and the inks vary from my collection depending on my mood.
Great idea for a series. Keep 'em coming, Stephen.
Yep. I like this series too.
Q1: do you also carry any ink vials (eg: the Visconti travel inkwell) for refilling a pen while at work? If so, what do you use?
Q2: do your students avoid you when you're holding the Classic Pens LB5 filled with Montblanc Corn Poppy Red ink?
Liked the style! DO do more!
Very interesting format.
Very nice video
I have a fountain pen revolution pen roll. I carry 6 pens in it. a vintage flexpen, another vintage that's an everyday writer, a med italic pilot prera, a finepount twsbi 580, a modern flex pen (guru) and a broad italic calligraphy pen. I'm an art teacher, so I like to have options.😁 if I'm going to be finishing a drawing I usually like to have a cheap eye dropper like a noodlers Charlie filled with something like d atramentis document black, as well. I only put tricky ink in cheap eye droppers that can be disassembled very easily. I like to rotate my vintage pens which is why I didn't specify but as for Flex pens I do prefer my Watermans 52 1/2
do not stop doing these videos!!!!!!!!!
Love it! Please do more
I got a 3 -4 pen soft leather pouch off EBay. One large pocket but suits me fine. The pens can clip to the front and don't move around. For £11 it is all I need and would want to pay
I like this! I can't wait for more of these and "How do you like me now?" videos!
I loved seeing your pens. If I owned any of them they would NOT go to work with me because I would fear losing them or having someone take them. I already lost a whole set of erasable pens I took to work and don't know if I miss placed them or if someone lifted them. I will use my fountain pens in my journal for now. I will stick to taking inexpensive pens just in case I lose them. Your collection definitely made me want some more expensive pens to call my own. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed this. Next I'll be interested to learn when you swap pens out of this list and why.
Always wanted to know this, so yes, a very useful video. Thanks
The nib on the first pen shown is impressive.
Do make more of these. Fountain pens are always nice to see.
It's really nice to see which pens others take to work. I hope to see more videos of the series in the future.
Stephen, Another great video. One dilemma that I have is being cautious in only taking to work fountain pens that I am willing to lose. However, you appear brave enough to take some of your best performers. Hope you address this question in a future entry. As always, appreciate your insights. FountainBen
a fun style of video for sure. Interesting information to receive.
DEFINITLY INTERESTING. Thank you Manfred Knie. Austria
Keep it up, nice and innovative. I am retired now. One of the things I miss about having a job is that there is often no place to take my pens each day. They are sad too (do I hear them crying?) I used to carry two fountain and one roller ball most days.
I highly enjoy watching your videos. Thanks. The pens I take to work are the pilot metropolitan, a Platinum Plaisir, a Cross Aventurer, a Jinhao X750. Recently I took a TWSBI diamond 580 with me. My work colleagues have never seen such an expensive or high tech pen like this before! :)
I like the daily carry format, would love to see more of them on occasion.
Do you like to use any pen rolls? I have a Franklin Christoph leather pen roll that holds 7 pens, and I love it. Fits nicely in my backpack or into a locked drawer if I have to step out for a minute at work.
I enjoy this new format quite a bit. As a former academic who used fountain pens to grade and comment on student papers, I found that a fine nib worked best on the dreadful copy paper students use. I prefer a medium or stub nib for my own writing,, but those tend to bleed through the paper terribly. I was told by my adviser to not use red ink in grading. Students tend to see anything in red as saying they did something wrong. Actually, I think that this is an old wives tale. I've never seen any research on this. It's probably an academic folk tale - the PhD. version of the Billy Goat's Gruff.
Isaac Fox I mark up in yama budo, De Atramentis fuchsia, or green
Thanks for doing this. Please keep doing theses.
I enjoyed this video very much. I would love for you to continue with this series. By the way, I love my Visconti 6 pen pouch! I feel my pens are well protected in it. Thanks for all of your videos. I really enjoy them.
I do like the new segment. In the next one would it be possible to write out the nib size. I kept on missing it when comparing it to the other pens you are using. Thanks
continue this series for sure!
I gotta say, I never liked that Poppy Red much, from the writing samples I've seen around online - but it does looks amazing on that LB5!
Not only pen porn, but also you gave us an insight into your personality. Keep them coming. So many Italians! So many flashy colors. And so many valuable pens. I don't have anything quite as fancy as any of those pens, and yet I leave my most valuable pens at home. If I'm writing at work or in a cafe I don't want to use a flashy pen that will attract attention. That's just me.
I liked the how you like me now serious... As the initial hype passes, a quick recap on previous pens are great..
Does the grail pen actually stand thetest of time.
It would be nice to know what pens you actually regret buying as we all have that one pen that wasn't as expected.
uncle jay Yes, I liked that format too. I intend to do more of those this year.
sbrebrown awesome. I loved how do you like me now. I'd love to see those for inks.
+uncle jay I know you were asking Dr. Brown, but just my 2 cents worth. I still consider myself fairly new to this fountain pen "addiction" and so of the 12 to 15 pens I own I don't feel I regret any of them because I learned something from all of them. Granted there are some that I like more then others and some I like _much_ more then others. :)
I started doing videos like this which I called "Pens in Use." It's a lot more popular on my channel than my reviews. I think people enjoy seeing a lot of pens and getting some follow up on which ones you actually continue to use.
this format is cool as long as you change the pens you carry ;)
however i really enjoy your channel and thanks for all your reviews, even if i can't afford any of the pen you show is ever beautiful looking and dreaming abut them
A nice little diversification from your usual pen reviews - call it a twist (of the cap) ;D I notice, all six are the big boys of your collection - & I do like that Namiki Emperor eyedropper - perhaps I should rename it, the 'Jawdropper' - you could carry your shopping home in that barrel !! Makes my MB 149 look positively juvenile. Super-cool collection, Stephen...keep rolling them out.
i'm about to start a new job and I would like to keep seeing your carry pens. Might be able to help me decide on what to take to work and for what reason I should take them.
Really enjoyed this , I also find MB Inks to be outstanding and corn poppy red is one of my favourite reds along with the Shaffer red . Thanks Dr Brown
Helpful as always, Stephen. I like seeing writing samples in a group, comparing the nibs and the inks.
I take a fisher bullet space pen most days
EDC Adventures Me too. I work outside but need something that will write in any condition. I do sometimes bring along a Karas Kustoms anodized aluminum pen, but after my old Lamy workhorse froze solid on me I'm much more careful about liquid inks in the elements.
My EDCs tend to be very robust pens like the Kara Ink and the Gist Tactile to survive the knocks and bangs of daily use
very nice concept, enjoyed it. Would be nice to have a weekly/monthly one.
Thank you for posting this.
I like what you have done here as I too carry several different pens to work, keep going, do not stop
Cheers
I enjoy any posts from you, its because of the SBRE Brown blog that I and I'm sure a lot of us, have learned how to do things with fountain pens, maintainance etc, also to be able to visually experience so many pens / inks.
I think this is a new/good idea but how you continue the input will be of intetest. The pens you take to work, Gordon H Bennet... I hope you're well insured. What if you left that lot in a taxi or on a bus. Sorry to be so pessimistic but shit happens,, regularly!
But hey there Doc... Those who watch your stuff love you for doing it, remember most of us can't afford one of these pens you carry so I would ask you not to forget about the jinhao, kaigelu, dollar or other inexpensive products we all use.
Best wishes to all pen people.
keep this series up!! very good. are you still taking your highlighter and whiteboard pens to work? Would be nice to address those items as well in future videos perhaps.
robert miller I'll keep it up!
Just saw this. Great to see what others are using at work. Give me some ideas.
I like the idea. My pens are considerably more humble than yours, but I like seeing what you'll be using next week...for what it's worth, my pens for next week will be two Lamy Safari's (F & M), a TWSBI Diamond 580 (F), and a TWSBI Classic (F). I look forward to your next instalment, if you choose to do another.
Love this style of video.
I've given up on using fountain pens at work. I'm in finance and need to erase. Anytime I use a pen it's for such a quick note it's not worth unscrewing the cap.
Dee Dee Get a Pilot vanishing point. better than a click bic.....
IAT1964 I tried one and couldn't get used to it... The clip under my fingers made it difficult to write with.
Erasing tape or white out?
I enjoyed this new series!!
Please do not misplace that pen pouch! Great idea for a series. To add to the conversation, my work pen pouch this week has a Pilot Vanishing Point with Noodlers Heart of Darkness, Visconti Homo Sapiens with Lie de The and a Visconti Van Gogh with some blue ink I forgot. Any recommendations on a good highlighter fountain pen/ink combo?
Very nice, please keep these videos coming. I also wonder which specific pen-ink do you use to sign documents at/outside work? Thanks!
Very enjoyable! Thanks. I like a peek inside people's pen pouches 😊
Great idea for a series, and quite unique - moving from theory to practice. It's interesting to see all the colours of ink, and how you've matched them to nib size. Plus the pens are gorgeous. Very enjoyable- two thumbs up 👍👍
like the format, good video! You and I have the same grading style for our students!
Excellent idea for daily fountain pen users. The choice of pens for me requires to avoid using pens that acquire a lot of attention due to several concerns. Can you focus one video on pens most people would not notice such as the Homo Sapiens steel version versus the Pelikan m1005?
That's a nice yellow.
Love the format. Keep it up please :)
Really enjoyed video
Cursive handwriting 😍😘
One video of all montblac pen I will be happy to se it
Thank you, Stephen. Regarding the pen pouch, how about a Franklin-Cristoph penvelope instead? Regarding the format, sure.
I like those, but I find the lining a bit too hard.
I have the Visconte, and I have only the BEST to say about it......
Stephen, I've just been on the P. W. Akkerman website - not a sniff of their 'Ochre' yellow ink. Any other Dutch retailers that might carry same ?
The Akkerman ink is exclusively available through Akkerman. I've just verified that the yellow ocher is on their website too...
Thank you, Stephen...Akkerman's site is translated into English (tho' not Irish), but perhaps looking at their specific brand product (I only saw two inks featured), & the general ink section too, was pretty limited. I think I'll call them direct, & place an order - or at least obtain a product code...slainte, good sir :)
You are on vulpennen.nl?
I am, yes, Stephen. I'll briefly explain why I had trouble sourcing the Oker ink bottle - it's a two parter: 1. Brand new glasses picked up from the opticians, today, ergo, slight accommodation issues with focus; 2. Minor concussion from an altercation with a patient in the Accident & Emergency Dept - I'm a Trauma Physician (the irony is too delicious), so nursing a bruised frontal & temporal region, & combined with new spectacles, it's not a wonderful union. That said, I did locate the ink, & now await it's arrival from Amsterdam...so I thank you for the follow up...it's all good,
Best,
Andrew :)
Sorry about the issues, but enjoy the ink!
Thanks for posting - I like the concept and also would be interested to hear what types of writing tasks you use each of the pens for during the work day.
Thank you for the video, which I found useful and interesting. Is it possible to improve the lighting in the studio? I found it quite difficult to the see the pens when you held them up to the camera. Thanks again for sharing your current work lineup! Kind regards for a fine 2017!
