as i wrote under another comment... i think fighting is the right way. the same way algorhytms can detect copyrighted music... they can be trained to detect ai made art. that way it will be clear in the future what is made by humans and what not. you artists just have to get there. and you will, after more and more people will lose their jobs (animators, game designers, music, movie industry, writers, programmers, everything digital... and so on).
every tech can be reversed, found, and rewritten. and the ai's that are already out there will be usefull only as refference pictures creating mashines, after an algorhytm is created that will detect ai art. there just has to be an interest in it. political interest for example. hopefully the people who are claiming to be anti rasist will realize soon that these ai's are often creating apes or weird creatures with dark skinned people. then these people could help the fight as well and so on. at some point i think that people will realize that it's not just about artists. it's about them as well. big tech will swallow everyone if there is no resistance. so don't give up yourself okay?
also you should watch this. something seems to happen behind the curtains ruclips.net/video/Nn_w3MnCyDY/видео.html

That is probably going to be the future at some point. Though I think AI taking over X will depend. Such as AI truck drivers, that will probably take longer to actually come and my guess is you are probably going to always have a human driver to supervise the AI, the day when the AI trucker can do everything will take most likely a great deal of time to come. Now in terms of Art, if we are looking at Art purely through the lens of "who is hiring the artist(s) ?", assuming AI art is legal (still not sure how copyright issues will work) then yeah AI part will definitely be a part of the future going forward. I.e... the genie is already out of the bottle, that genie is not going back in.
What I think is going to happen is the smaller creators will probably use AI art more generously simply because I want to save money and the AI art is "good enough". The big companies I think may slowly become a mix of AI art and
"regular"/people artist. I.e.. the big companies may use AI art where it is cheaper, does need to be as specialized or people won't really notice that X company is using AI art for Y.

But I'm terrified that my dream, the one job that I've told my friends, family, and everyone around me will be impossible to get, because there's a cheap, easily accessible, and near instant alternative to people like me. I want to animate, I want to be a part of the process that has created all my favorite shows and movies. I doubt that I'll even get a chance to APPLY for a job like that now that ai can do it faster and better then I could. They make fucking masterpieces while I'm still learning to draw fingers. Especially with how studios already mistreat their staff, I don't have a single doubt that they're willing to just drop us in favor for the "make art button." I want to remain hopeful, but sometimes it just feels like every few days there is some ground lost, with very little action that might give newfound reassurance. Seeing so many people say “this is how it is, deal with it” or “It can help if you use it, adapt or die.”, feels like each another nail in the mental coffin.

I’m right there with you. I’m a software engineer, and the latest developments in AI have been downright scary. They say the good will outweigh the bad, but I seriously doubt that. For what it’s worth, an AI may make an image in a few seconds, that looks similar to what a human might create, but the reason I like art is because of the human process behind it. I can see myself in what an artist makes, and as a fellow human being, I can empathize with the artist. That will never be replaced. Maybe for cheap 13 in a dozen game assets, or corporate images people will opt for an AI generated image, but when it comes to what I hang on my wall I will always opt for the work of someone who, like me, suffers the human condition.

The actualy funny thing to think about of the AI's break into the commission field is.. that most of the people selling this stuff will be scammers, while most of the people buying it are going to be the cheapest customers. These two together will (and I assume already do) result in people trying to rip off artists with a few dollars, only to get awful results from scammers who are trying to undercut each other until they literally work for $1-2 only to flood the cheap customers with the most awful, all-time-low-quality art possible... meanwhile decent customers who care about artists will be even more motivated to pay both money and respect to those imperfect people who create unique works.

Exactly. The AI revolution is only going to destroy those with no actual skills/passions. Those who actually have talent will become even more unique. And that’s the point. They (our controllers) want to make it hard for people to obtain financial freedom. So the usual methods of getting that (having talents, hard to reproduce skills, working a high paying job) are being removed or access to them being difficult. Essentially we must adapt. Everyone needs to be learning basic programming so they can stay informed and competitive.

Or where everyone who wants to make art has to be self-taught like I am, because I couldn't afford art school? My problem with AI is it is a tool to create record-breaking inequality. Another form of creating social isolation like social media. With no accountability.

Worked my whole life as an artist, hence the name. Sleepless nights on cgi projects from college days right through to professional career. I never had to worry about how to make money. I was always seen as the successful one that could be called on to realise dreams and the visions of my peers, my friends, family. I felt proud that I earned it.
I'm sorry to all artists, but this is the big one, not just for us but for humanity. This isn't just a tool, this is Intelligence itself, Skill itself. Unfortunately, as the human race, we love Competition. We are desperate beings, clawing at each other, and subjugation is a subconscious infection in our minds. If it wasn't for the lusts of the 'Haves' and 'Have nots' , Ai would be an incredible moment to witness, because it would be akin to watching an alien race. But no, we need profits first, even though shareholders make plenty for a very comfortable lifestyle, yet the lust for more seems like it can't be controlled.
Our way of distributing the commodities of life itself needs to change, our way of life needs to change. This will be painful, but Ai will give us the opportunity as a species for introspection. Hopefully we will realise fighting each other for survival and comfort is illogical, and this so called Meaning to life is ill placed and is a ancient and outdated as our primate ancestors of animal mindset.

I had seen a post the other day where someone generated some ai art in the style of Hayao Miyazaki. Everyone was commenting that they hope he got the chance to see the piece. Miyazaki has stated years ago that AI and art do not belong together. He even went as far to say he feared we were nearing the end of times.

For me- it’s soul crushing to not work in the way that I love to work. There is no doubt pressure to digitize every aspect of our lives…. Even our precious artwork! For a while I just did sketches in my sketchbook and never progress them further until I built my own pc and got a drawing tablet, changed my whole process and world because I could experiment without consequences!
You should honestly, procreate is magical the brushes are very intuitive and respond like real brushes in some cases. I found there was a bit of a learning curve for me at first from traditional to digital because you have to plan more and think in layers, think about the tools and what they can do-but there’s so many tutorials on RUclips for shortcuts and ways to speed up the process. You can literally drag a color and drop it into a sketch and procreate knows where to fill it, it’s really cool.
Procreate records your process too so you can see the sketch turn into an illustration! The only thing I don’t like about it though is it can limit your layers or document size depending on the size of your iPad, so I use procreate to sketch and keep like an art diary and I use clip studio paint on my pc to finalize everything, I prefer clip studio for line art because of the pen brush I created for it and it has an adjustment feature that corrects lines when you draw slightly. That’s the other thing too you don’t need to tweak a traditional brush, so it took me a while to find what worked for me.

The most unbelievable part is, that there are people who celebrate this. Its like... the majority of people don't understand art. They watch movies not to think, but to get their brains flushed. This is the reason, why Transformers-movies exist. The most people never visited an art gallery. Yes, it is far more worse: We are a hated breed. As artist, you don't create something worthy for the society, so the most people think. They tell you, to learn something better, like making money at the stockmarket or work as an workerbee, to make mommy and daddy proud. And for what? To regret your fucked up life after 60 years in a job you hate, because everyone does it the same way.
And that's why we artists are hated. Because we stand out and show this endtime-cancer-capitalism, that there is another path. Yet, they drop us down. As an photographer, I always heared the quote "You just pushed a button, thats not woth the price" or "My phone has more megapixel than your camera 😂". Now they will say "is it real or just AI?". Now they will create something with a few prompts, instead of hireing me and my collegues. And guess what? They don't care about quality. The only thing, they want is as much output as possible, for no money. The wet dreams of every businessman. And they are coming for drawings, photography, animation and film. Music is also doomed. Thats the future, no matter what they say to hold us down from revolting. We are obsolete now and I don't think, there is a plan for a social care system, to help those, who lose their jobs. At the end, soilent green is human meat. Homo homini lupus.
I am sorry. Was a nice life. In future we will have to figure out, how to survive this new horror-dystopia. You think, AI is too cheesy to create something worthy? Then look at Disney. Marvel-movies everywhere. Remakes. Shitty series. And yet, the majority consumes it anyway. Its not about the quality. It never was. Its about making the shareholders happy and rich. Nobody will know, when the big companys start to let AI write their storys, animate their movies, create their merchandise. At the end, we artist will be the dying breed, not the big companys and CEOs. Or, how porcupine tree stated it in their song "the sound of muzak":
    Hear the sound of music
    Drifting in the aisles
    Elevator Prozac
    Stretching on for miles
    The music of the future
    Will not entertain
    It's only meant to repress
    And neutralize your brain
    Soul gets squeezed out
    Edges get blunt
    Demographic
    Gives what you want
    Now the sound of music
    Comes in silver pills
    Engineered to suit you
    Building cheaper thrills
    The music of rebellion
    Makes you want to rage
    But it's made by millionaires
Who are nearly twice your age
One of the wonders of the world is going down
    It's going down I know
It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares

You do know that some people on this planet are doing this for a living, right ?
Believe it or not, but for a lot of people, art is not just a hobby, but a full-time job that pays their rent, their food, their bills, their family's livelihood.
Seeing so many bored people prompting some random stuff and slapping some existing artists styles on it is effectively flooding the market with trillions of lookalike images, therefore, plummetting the value of said artist's artistry, since now, everybody with a computer and a few prompts can do "the same" (minus the human eyes and hands -for now) for free and in no time, therefore bringing said artist value to virtually zero, so that said artist can no longer make any income, pay his rent/bills/family needs, and has to abandon this career he/she spent years if not decades honing their skills and experience to find a job in a completely unrelated profession where he has zero experience and has to start all over at the lowest ring and payroll. And that is IF they are lucky enough to find another job in another field, which most of the time, certainly doesn't happen overnight (sometimes a few weeks, sometimes a few months, if not years... And during that time, the bills always come due, and the already meager saving of said artist are melting like snow under the sun, and by the end of a few months, they're living on the street already, and everybody knows that when you end up in the streets, it's for life ! Nobody makes it out of the street.
How do I know all this ? I was so excited to keep going...but then I saw a lot of AI making better work than I can at the moment... Who wants to watch me draw at 10x speed while talking about the process when you can just click click and boom.
I will continue to create; I do feel the invalidation, the lack of respect, the lack of fairness... I feel the "you're just goin to have to just deal with this because there's nothing you can do."
I tried Dall-e. It's really good. I mean it came up with really solid concepts. AT this point it can be a tool. But the fear is when it gets better; when every element looks right the first time.

This is very, very well-said, "product consumption with extra steps" is perfect.
The AI "watch the world burn because MY life is miserable" crowd is constantly talking about an end product and how consumable a product is, and that's it. There's no concept of how a great end product comes from the collaboration of a paid team of artistic minds. Art isn't an end product, it's a process that results in an end product.
"Soon we can enter a prompt and it will generate a full movie for me!", all the while not realizing that a brilliant movie is made through the collaboration of a team of artistic minds with human spontaneity that, no matter what, cannot properly be replicated by a machine. Even at it's best, there is an organic way that our animal minds work - messy, imperfect - that creates incredible art with depth and meaning. Something just "looking cool" doesn't make it art, it makes it a consumable for you to ingest while you munch on snacks and twiddle your toes in your grandparents' fart-soaked recliner.
When you've been watching only AI movies for years, your prompts are going to be based on other prompted movies, and so on, and eventually the quality of the movies that you're generating will be about as complex as "worker and parasite" from The Simpsons.

A message to artists coming from a Computer Science student:
I want to share my take on this with you aritsts out there. I have read a lot of these AI enthusiasts mocking artists who criticize AI, only to come to the realisation that even tech jobs can be done with AI. I really understand your struggle and appreciate your work, so I want to share two things with you, one regarding art as passion, and one regarding art as a job.
    1) On art as passion. A labour like yours is intrinsically passional like no other and no one who does not like art is willing to go through all the process that takes to be a good artist. As a matter of fact, artists often share some personality traits that drive them to express themselves through art. Only because your labour is not the most productive one - in a materialistic sense - it is often not recognised. It does take a deep spirit to hold art in high esteem, and this is something that many of the bison heads out there will never be able to grasp. Hence, even if you cannot make a career out of art (which I will discuss in a moment), never stop creating just because some machine can reproduce some picture in a matter of seconds. Chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer thought Chess was dead because of computers, but the game is today more alive than ever before, and its community and the interest in Chess is ever growing. This is, I predict, the future of art.
    2) On art as a job. If you want to have a career based on art, it is true that you will have to learn to use these new technologies, for they are unstoppable, for better or worse. They cannot be stopped because there are too many political interests to develop them, so everyone should start to accept that they have come to stay. This does not mean that you have to give up on doing art in a more traditional way, but that it will not be enough to make a career out of it. "Don Quixote long ago paid the penalty for wrongly imagining that knight errantry was compatible with all economic forms of society". Do learn to live in this new world that is coming, but don't ever drop your passion, for job is what makes you survive, but passion is what makes you live.

A commentary YTer I admire posted a video about AI and basically had the stand point of "everyone samples art why be upset." It was a crushing.
As artist we carefully construct a shell around our feelings, our self worth and egos.
"Don't compare your art", "Trust your process", "Don't burn yourself out", "keep pushing for creativity" "remember why you love art". Everyone being compared especially young beginners, seeing them look at the summit of art through the lense of AI and saying "I'll never be able to climb that" and turn away. It sucks.
But I keeping thinking of artist back in the day; Van Gogh painting everyday in the countryside thinking "No one will ever like my art, I'll never be anything."
To now not only be world renowned but his art pieces touching ppls hearts in ways he could have never imagined.
We in the moment feel so helpless and miniscule but if one person sees that art and feels something genuine I think that something worth pushing for, because who knows what the future holds. Maybe one day there will be a Dune-like rejection of computers and AI and all that will be left is what humans put their hearts into.

Thank you for speaking about this. Just adding my own two cents: I genuinely believe that there is some synergy, something more than the sum of parts that authentically created art has, a real sense of emotion that simply can never be replicated.
Our minds are not even close to being understood by us, so they can never be recreated. This is an extremely existentially distressing issue, however, as an artist.

Why not learn to use the AI to take your art to the next level? It's not a replacement to you as an artist, but a new paradigm in tools enabling your creativity. Much like digital design tools were a new paradigm compared to physical brushes and paint. Learn to prompt properly, remix datasets with one another, reroll specific parts of images, and do manual touch-ups where AI struggles. You can even hand create base images and have AI create something around it. AI WILL make an impact in many many fields and there's no putting the genie back in the bottle. You will either need to learn to use it, learn to compete with it by hand (100% possible), or you get left behind. That goes for artists, programmers, or writers. Keep an open mind and good luck.

There are visions and ideas that only humans can create in their minds and put into their art that is more valuable than anything else. AI just use existing images from your art and that should be regulated under rule and laws that YOU decide as human artists. Get together, form groups, form unions, and get good spokespersons to lift your fears and desires up and front.
We must make this good in harmony and balance for all humans - and respect that AI is just a tool which must be regulated and under the control of the ARTISTS not only science, businesses, or states.

Ever since I was a kid I only ever made art for myself, and for the people in my life who I knew would appreciate it. For me it was, and is, therapeutic, it was fun, and it was a way for me to communicate my word through images as an autistic person who always struggled with communicating my thoughts.
And while a part of me would love to be a career artist, it's also an aspiration that I don't allow to affect my value as an artist. For me, letting go of that pressure to "careerify" my artistic worth was critical to improving my relationship with my art and with myself. Weather I make a million dollars or nothing, I'm still an artist, and I always will be. If I make art, I'm an artist. I've already *made* it. It's not much, but it's enough.
To any artist who reads this, I love you, and I love your art. Even if you don't, or can't, or if no one else in your life does, I do. And I always will. I swear on every last drop of ink I've put to parchment. You are an artist. You are enough.

It's nice to see people promoting hope in others but avoiding the toxic positivity at the same time. As someone who's been drawing most of my life (near to 20 years) but also explores other mediums like music composition and game development engines, I can't say all that time was dedicated to art exclusively, but it has always been the first medium I turn to for self expression. I recall years ago, that I said, "the day I put down the pencil for good, thats the day I truly die." I've wanted to give up before. I've seen young artists zip past me in mere MOMENTS. I've seen people once my pupil surpass me. But I had to reconnect with the purpose, why I started, why I do it. Much like you've said. I do feel many artists these days view their art first as a product and maybe not at all as an extension of their being.
I'll be upfront. I'm pro AI, but with caveats. We need ethically sourced datasets, so people can feel more secure about their art being stolen. I think that people shouldn't be able to get away with claiming they made a piece, as that's also disrespectful to the ai itself. When I have made a few "ai arts" it has been started with my own hand drawn image, refined with ai, then edited by me, in a back and forth conversation, resulting in some impressive work. I think if more people could use it this way, it would be for the better. It's helped me to learn and desire to try new brushes, methods, etc, and it's honestly made my fire to draw burn hotter, not colder.
I personally don't fear ai taking my style or my work. Try as it may, it can make pretty pictures, but it can't form a relationship with a fan base, engage them and involve them in their project, and come to foster and love a community in the same way a human can. By all means, I think we as artists need to understand our value, but not be absorbed in our hubris either. I am intermediate at best, but I imagine more professional artists may be at a point where they have "hit their peak" and to see something generate quality similar to theirs may terrify them or challenge their sense of control. But as I said, I feel this is very similar to seeing an artist more skilled than oneself whipping up an art faster. That shouldn't make us stop. Our art is expression of our experiences, of our feelings, the lessons and stories we want to share. And whether or not a human or an ai can make it "faster" or "better" is no reason to throw how far we've come away. I think if you love art more for the number of likes and views than the process of making it, you've lost sight of the heart in your art to begin.
Art on its own doesn't have inherent meaning or value. WE. Give it that.

My advice to you younger artist, remembrance the traditional mediums and tools. We all start with paper and pencil. Then you might add markers, color pencils and paints. A.I. art cannot compete with mixed media on canvas. A.I. cannot create a fresh new character with a cool wash, acrylic or inks on it. Clay statues...metal work, glitter on poster board....forget it!! A lot of you grew up with Photoshop or Gimp or Applepads and that's your baseline frame of reference for art....time to evolve and really come into the craft. Buy some watercolors, pastels and an actual set of graphite pencils, canvas paper, canvas board, and tap into the 1 thing A.I. will never be able to reproduce, raw human creativity. All I see with A.I art is reproduced digital work, not one piece that looks like authentic paint on canvas. Build up another skillset away from the tech.

So, I started drawing for myself when I was 21 and I would never have shown my art to anyone if it wasn't for my sister that found out that I drew a year after I started. I never cared about showing it to anyone, not because I thought it was bad, but because the point of it was to carry me through my anxiety and insomnia. It gave me literally a thing to focus on when I was in a never ending loop of bad thoughts.
Now I'm 26 and this hole AI thing happens. At first I was like "Interesting...I guess we will see." now it's a bit more complicated then that. I'm a philosophy major and I couldn't stop thinking about the meaning of it. And to me, right now, it's a giant beast (Wether it's good or bad), a strange thing that produces images salvaging what it can from artists. Meaning that without art it can't do anything. If we stop making art, it will only make this beast repeat the same theme and ideas. It will, as it is right now, only create a strange eco chamber of what was but never achieve what could have been. (One exemple is the fact that it already chow some bias in gender roles like a nurse will be a woman 90% of the time).
Honestly, I think it could be amazing in the right hands. But like pretty much anything, in the hands of people looking for a quick cash in... well, the prospect in grimm. I also think we will be in the "Wild West" of AI for a few years and hopefully not longer. In the end it still could be amazing that, with the help of an AI, you could animate a character that you have design and drew in different poses and angles. An artist could make a short film, or a fan film with the help of his personal assistant AI. I guess that's the key word here, AIs should be assistants not replacements.
I could literally write a essay about this, this gives me a feeling of existential dread that I only feel when thinking about my nation disappearing (I'm from Québec, @AdamDuffArt used the nation exemple in one of his videos at my surprise and I feel it's accurate.). Feeling your hole identity shifting is painful as hell... But I really have to stop writing because if I don't this comment will be a never ending rambling.

Art is a way to express one's self, regardless of your skill level. I love to draw and write. Sometimes it's my way of coping and escaping reality, even if for a short time. Art is a way to free the mind, even if we don't think we're great at it. We learn and grow with every step. We learn and teach others when we show a bit of ourselves in the things that we create. There are many communities that share in the same interests, and sometimes it's hard to reach out, but they are there for everyone. I found this video at the perfect time. I have been feeling this sense of hopelessness, as if all my effort and years ive put into art will be for nothing. I keep telling myself its time to give up because AI is here and it will only get better. My mental health has been so terrible, I feel like this thing that means so much to me is being given to a robot instead. Its like my feelings dont matter. It sounds so dystopian in a way. When you started crying, I started sobbing too and let out all that rage and pain that has been building up inside of me regarding this. watching this video made me realise there is people out there who feel the same as me and i am not overreacting. It hurts, it hurts so much. Im sending you virtual hugs!!! Youre awesome, lets keep this support going in out little community because no robot out there can truly take our place. they cant feel what we feel, they cant get together like we can with so much love for art and each other.

No you're not overreacting. I have had days when I feel way worse than she shows on the video. Like I want revenge, deep anger I feel some days, not just sadness. Not just anger for my own fate, but the fate of young people who dreamed of art careers. I want to avenge them all, but I just don't know how.
It's really really tragic thing. But for only to some people, the ones who felt art is their "calling in life". For most people it means nothing, they can't relate. These "get over it, jobs have always been replaced" people don't realize that it's WAY more than a job. It was the very meaning of our life. Very core of our identity. In the same way our face is, or a mother's only child is. It's not just a job, it was the most important thing about us as a person. More important than our face, actually.

My humble opinion being someone who loves art, but has never aimed to sell anything: What makes art worth millions? I suggest that the answer is the artist. People don't want "Starry Night". They want "Van Goghs Starry Night". I think people are driven more to the artist and the idea/story that creates a painting/song/story than the actual piece of art itself. I think artists will be fine personally!

DaVinci didn't paint starry night, Van Gogh did. I agree with your sentiment though 👍

Well, that’s great for the 0.001% of artists who reach Van Gogh status. It’s not really a lot of consolation to the vast majority who rely on commercial work to pay the bills while trying to make a name people care about.

I have a lot of thoughts about AI-generated content, which I should probably turn into a video as well. Basically, I think humans have some very real advantages that make me a little less nervous. We can show process, we can tell stories. The magic trick of putting paint, pencil, or pixels onto a surface, and it becomes a little alternate reality is something that only we can really do. You can enter the mind of an artist, but there is no “mind” in the computer.

    • @emikomina
      @emikomina Год назад

the mind of the computer is the code itself. the source of the code is the programmer. the mind of the programmer is the same brain of an artist.

@@emikomina it's ridiculous how people don't see the difference. programmer doesn't have any relation to the output that consumers get, consumers get the product made on the basis of the stolen art from everywhere on the net, exploiting living artists' creativity. Programming is a creative thing on its own, it doesn't have any relationship with the output of those AI things
