- Stone Town, Zanzibar was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This historic city offers a blend of Islamic and Swahili cultures, with elegant minarets and beautifully carved doors. In this videos, we walk through narrow streets that snake through historic monuments such as the fish market, spice market, slave market and House of Wonders, an 18th century sultan's palace.
The Darajani Market is the main commercial focus of Zanzibar Stone City. Informally known as Marikiti Kuu, it is located around the Anglican Cathedral of Christ and was once a former slave market. Currently, it is a hotbed of products, aromas, flavors and colors.
There is evidence of civilization on Zanzibar since 20 000 years ago. Visiting Zanzibar's Stone Town, where Freddy Mercury and Tracy Chapman were born, snorkeling next to Mnemba atoll, contemplating the red colobus monkey in the jungle of Jozani, swimming with dolphins in Kizimkazi and admiring the fishermen at dawn, on the west coast, are some of the unique attractions that this enclave offers.
Zanzibar is an archipelago, a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean located just over 15 miles off the coast of Tanzania. Unguja, commonly called Zanzibar, is the largest and most visited island. It is an essential region in the commercialization of spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper.
