Trick for the front coupler, slide the coupler box on the front before placing the shell in. Stick the coupler through the cutout on the pilot and drop the shell in
When I started with the Santa Fe, there were still a number of mechanics that had worked steam in the mechanical department. These mechanics said all of the diesel repairs were charged off to steam to make the diesels appear more cost effective. The diesels were no comparison to the modern 3460 class Hudson’s, 3776 class Heavy Mountain’s (Northerns), & 5010 class Texas Type. The early 567a engines with open cylinder liners were prone to internal water leaks. We often had to fill the engine cooling water with the engines running so the lower liner seals would take up from heat expansion, so you wouldn’t loose the cooling water in the crankcase. Early DC electrical transmission and control systems were not very reliable either. The only benefit is you could perform some repairs, even changing power assemblies on the road.
Thanks Ms it would Have Bren . Nice to see howthat front coupler goes back together thats the pat is liked to see! thanks
I have one to do later on, but I’m warning you there may be some swearing involved. It’s not easy...

That’s good to know, it’s a shame that they destroyed most steam engines.
Wish you would have showed how front coupler went on .
It’s very tough to put on. I can’t do it on camera, besides there’s some swearing envolved.
thanks for passing on your knowledge - most apppreciated
