It is my understanding that there are issues with the track geometry being able to safely handle the 1309. It is also my understanding that there are plans to correct this and rehabilitate the turntable, possibly next year, so that the locomotive can be turned. An advantage of having the diesel on the other end of the train is that it can use dynamic brakes to control the train down the steep grades back to Cumberland.
How come they aren't using the turntable to turn it? I'm just curious.
